Marilyn Monroe is back in theaters again, this time played by the lovely and brave Michelle Williams, who much like Monroe always seems to be up for pushing herself and taking on a challenge. My Week with Marilyn is not your typical Monroe bio-film, though they throw in a few homages to her iconic dance numbers and songs, this film is really about pulling back the curtain and getting to know what really made Monroe an icon. It wasn’t her curves, it was that mysterious something else that gave her that edge, that sent directors mad, but ultimately made her one of the biggest stars, ever…

The Plot:

Much like the title suggests, the film gives the brief glimpse into the life of Marilyn Monroe through the eyes of one of her admirers, who for one week, become something a bit more to Monroe.

The Good:

Michelle Williams: She’s getting rave reviews everywhere and rightly so. There are moments where every inch of her, head to toe, you could freeze frame and match directly to a photo of Monroe. She embodied the part, and didn’t just play it. She also didn’t play the cliche, sexy, seductress Marilyn Monroe, but the woman she (likely) was behind the scenes. Which leads us to…
Not Your Average Marilyn: They do a great job of showing all the tiny little details that very well made Marilyn, Marlyn Monroe. The fears, the anxiety, the pressure, the need to be loved — they do a great job of exploring what went into the woman, to make her the icon. It wasn’t an easy journey and one, that though we admire, came at a heavy price.
Production Quality: From the sets, to the hair, to the chaise lounges and the silk robes, they really made every inch of this film count. You really felt like you were back in that time, with those people and a part of what was going on. Really a great overall production, which made for a great, immersive experience, which made the film feel that much more important.
Amazing Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Dominic Cooper, Philip Jackson, Michelle Williams and the rest, all deserve a round of applause for their work on this film. Though Williams leads the way, with Branagh and Redmayne supporting her all the way, it’s really the impressive cast as a whole that makes this film work as well as it does.

The Bad:

Monroe Hip Pads: There are a few shots where it’s very obvious that they simply padded Michelle Williams’ hips and boobs to give her the Monroe curves. It’s not a problem that they did it (even if Williams would have gained enough to be Monroe’s weight, it’s hard to gain it in all the right spots), it’s simply a problem because you can SEE the pads and it takes away from William’s performance and the believability.

Overall:

This is a great film. One that will be nominated for many statues come award season. Is it the winner? There’s something about it that might not quite have the edge to push it over the top, BUT it’s a great film, finely made, never dull and definitely worth a trip to the cinemas.

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint Discuss Their Future and Working On Other Projects

11 years ago, three kids got extremely lucky when they landed starring roles in what would become one of the most successful film franchises of all time. While Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is busy singing and dancing in his latest Broadway venture How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, his co-stars and friends Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are thinking about what the future holds for them. In a recent interview for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, Watson and Grint talked about being on other sets and working on other projects. Grint and Watson may never reprise their roles and Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, but that doesn’t mean their acting careers are over.

Watson recently wrapped The Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on the beloved novel by Stephen Chbosky. She’ll be playing the role of Sam alongside Logan Lerman and Paul Rudd. Watson, who is accustomed to working on the set of Harry Potter with a familiar cast and crew says she was nervous to take on a role where she would have to be in a foreign country and speak in a different accent.

“A lot of moments on this last movie I made in Pittsburg The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I was terrified. My first day I was so nervous. Doing a different accent, being on a new movie set in a foreign country with a crew I didn’t know and a cast I didn’t know. There’s a scene when I have to mimic Susan Sarandon in Rocky Horror Picture Show and I’m standing in a corset in front of all of these extras trying to do this dance and I felt ridiculous. It’s funny, coming out of [Harry Potter] I’m constantly doing things that are new. That takes bravery, I guess. I think it’s trying to have faith in yourself and believe in yourself and know that it’ll come right in the end, hopefully.”

But despite the jitters, it was The Perks of Being a Wallflower that reassured Watson that she wanted to be an actress.

“I’m very excited about [The Perks of Being a Wallflower]. Having an experience like that outside of Harry Potter was what really convinced me that acting really was what I should be doing and that I was good at it. It really solidified that for me.”

For Grint, working on other films whilst still working on Harry Potter was refreshing and different.

“I’ve always enjoyed stepping unto a different set when I could in between the films. Harry Potter is quite hard to compare anything to because it’s quite a unique machine. It’s a very different experience, these smaller films because you’re not with this familiar crew that you’ve grown up with. There’s new people and it always takes a little while for me to adjust. I learn a lot from these other films. It’s nice to be a different character and quite refreshing.”

Grint finished his latest film, Comrade – an anti-war film based on a true story – where he’ll star alongside German actor David Kross. Grint expresses that he enjoys acting and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon.

“I’ve always loved acting and doing these other films in between. I want to do more of that. I did a film a few months ago, WWII story. I want to move on and play different roles.”

As for his co-star, Watson is busy reading scripts before she heads to Oxford to study abroad (which is really home for her).

“Now just reading reading reading and trying to find the next thing that really speaks to me and that I really care about. Finding great directors who will keep teaching me so I can keep learning, but I’m excited about the idea of being an actress now in a way I wasn’t so sure of when I was younger.”

Harry Potter put these young actors on the map, there’s no doubt about that, but what they make of themselves after this franchise is over is entirely up to them. So far it seems like we’ll continue seeing a lot of all three stars, and that sits alright with me.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – Movie Review

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the long awaited finale is finally here, and though fans will be able to cheer along to the film, my biggest problem is that they won’t really be able to cry. It’s hard not to like this film on some levels because even though it would never stand alone and won’t be the film we all remember from the series, it’s the finale! As always there’s plenty of fine acting, another special effects Oscar win for them lined up, and our lovable characters, BUT it’s all turned into a bit of a Soap Opera and for the end of something SO grand, the film never really makes the decisions to emotionally or tonally go HUGE which was needed in order for it to truly succeed.

(Note: And if you want me to talk about the 3D I can’t and won’t. For all of the other films to be made in 2-D and then this one to swap at the last second was a miss-step and only showed a side of the series that Harry Potter himself would scoff at — it’s not all about money for the viewers. It’s a “smart” business move, but this film should be in 2-D, is beautiful that way, and the 3D is a waste of your time, money and integrity.)

The Plot:

The last film of the Harry Potter series. It all comes to an end.

The Good:

Our Trio: I still don’t know if it’s great casting, great teachers, growing up around such amazing actors, or just three amazing kids, but not only have our three main characters grown throughout the films, but they’ve grown into three mighty fine actors. Equivalents to the greats that supported them throughout the series. Despite the problems with the film, they’re always believable and seem to bring you back into almost any scene. This is their world and they were the ones who brought it to life for the audience – beautifully done.
Supporting Cast: Through the years, this has always been one of the highlights of the series, and once again it hasn’t failed them. Alan Rickman has always played one of my favorite characters and again he gives a great performance, Matthew Lewis who plays Neville Longbottom gave my favorite monologues of the film, Julie Walters as Molly Weasley fills your with delight and with one foul word will have you cheering… I can’t list everyone because I would just be listing the entire cast. All the little moments with the actors were really well done and appreciated.
The Effects: As always the Visual Effects department has stretched themselves and created an absolutely beautiful world for us to feast our eyes on (and no need for it to be done in 3D, the 2D color is better and gives you everything you need!.)

The Bad:

No Tears: I walked into this wanting to cry, wanting to get emotional, wanting to cheer and then sob my heart out — and there was nothing. There were moments of cheering, which was nice, but never I was never moved to emote anything more.Which leads to my overall problem of all of this being far too happy and never allowing for the film to settle in those dark moments and really revel in everything that’s happened and let the audience feel the severity of the situation. Also (SPOILER) when Voldemort finally faces off with Harry Potter, the last thing we want it a gag from Beatrix (who is great but was wrongly used in the moment). This was the moment we’ve been waiting for, for ten damn years! It’s a shame that it wasn’t taken more seriously.
Soap Opera-y: They had too much to explain and too many special effects to get in and as a result, it started to feel like they were forced to cram in as much information in one scene as possible so that they could spend time blowing up stuff in another. Harry was where? When? With who? She did what? Which means? Oh someone is running! But the action never had enough meaning to really hit home mainly because some of the exposition was weak at best and felt almost like an after-thought needing to tie things together.
Alan Rickman’s Make-Up: No excuses! A film like this should be visually perfect and despite the impressive special effects, Alan Rickman’s make-up was horrible! His eye liner looked like it was from Pirates of the Caribbean not ANY of the other Potter films! Small detail, but one that kept driving me nuts seeing as he’s one of my favorite characters!
The VERY End: (SPOILER) They’re supposed to have aged 19 years, Hermoine (Emma Watson) looked 25 tops, I don’t think it’s possible for a woman to age THAT gracefully (though maybe she knows a spell?). The only one who actually might have looked realistic was Ron (Rupert Grint), but overall the aging was really poorly done.
Didn’t Work as “Part 2″: I thought by them turning the last film into two films that they would have the time to really delve into the drama of it all, but instead the first film took away the severity needed to make the second film work. Without that direct pressure that the first film built, the second film is flimsy at best. Though I was excited about the idea of there being two films, they didn’t do it right. The ending would have meant so much more if both films would have been tied into one and they took out the excess and allowed the serious subject matter to really hit home.

Overall:

I loved Hogwarts the first time I saw it on the screen and the idea of it being destroyed and the series coming to a close is emotional, and I wanted to sob as I saw it fall to the floor, but the film just never moved me. The saddest part about this ending is the lack of sadness in the film. That being said, I’m still a fan of the series and perhaps watching both Deathly Hallows films back to back would give me the emotional closure I was hoping for. If you want to full effect, I’d recommend giving it a try.

Blake Lively or Emma Watson May Star With Taylor Lautner in Incarceron

After three films, Taylor Lautner has become the fledgling heartthrob of The Twilight Saga. With the series coming to an end following the release of Breaking Dawn, he’s making sure that his post-vampire career is ready to go. According to Deadline, he’s currently casting for the female lead and love interest in his developing film Incarceron, which is based on the Catherine Fisher novel.

Sources close to the production state that Blake Lively, Emma Watson, and Jennifer Lawrence are the three frontrunners for the part. This comes as a shock because it doesn’t appear as if there would be any chemistry between Lautner and Lively or Watson. It seems like such an odd pairing. Lawrence has potential, but the other two could be long shots.

In the film, “Lautner will play Finn, who has lived his entire life on Incarceron, a savage, futuristic prison society. He meets the daughter of the warden, who is trapped in her own prison, a futuristic world constructed beautifully to look like the 17th Century. She knows nothing of Incarceron except that it exists. She and Finn simultaneously find a crystal key that allows them to communicate and hatch an escape plan for Finn.”

Not only will Lautner star in Incarceron but he’ll also co-produce. The script is being written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage.

A while ago we posted the first official photo of Michelle Williams as the title character in the film My Week With Marilyn. Even though the actress isn’t a spitting image she has enough of a resemblance to pull off the part. Today we’ve moved on to the film’s supporting cast that includes Harry Potter alum Emma Watson. Watson stars as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant working behind the scenes during the making of The Prince And The Showgirl in 1956.

Official Synopsis:

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark, just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, the film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe, who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller.

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account “The Prince, the Showgirl and Me” was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as “My Week with Marilyn” – this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I: Movie Review

It’s finally here! David Yates’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 flies into theaters this weekend. It feels like it’s been such a long time since we’ve seen Harry Potter on the big screen, it’s nice to finally continue the series with a film that is stronger than the last. In this film the Potter world takes a turn for the worse and our three lovable characters have to find a way to fight back. Despite the few problems with this film, Yates has delivered his a solid Potter film with more action, darkness and emotional depth than we’ve seen before (except for in Alfonso Cuaran’s).

The Plot:

We begin by remembering one big thing, Professor Dumbledore is dead and now nothing is safe. Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction–the Horcruxes. The three friends relationships are put to the test and they now must now rely on one another more than ever despite Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart. The Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort… alive. Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him.

The Good:

The Nazi/Facism Nod: Got to love a good nod to the Nazi regime! From the flyers, to the pure bloods screaming “but my father was a wizard!”, to mudbloods having to stand on trail and then hide out underground (though I’m sure most Jews would have loved to have a bit of magic to help them out). Though it was a bit obvious, it was a nice, messed up addition to the stories that helped show how big the war against Potter is and how much he’ll have to overcome.
The Acting: These three kids are amazing. Not only have they somehow all managed to not become power-hungry crackheads BUT they also can act, and very well I might add. Despite some of the issues I had with the story, all three main characters and the outstanding supporting, English cast who has literally left no English actor out at this point, all gave wonderful performances.
Dark Content: Though Alfonso Cuaran’s is still my favorite Potter film because of how dark he was able to take the tonality of the film, this was quite possibly the second darkest Potter film with some almost scary, definitely tense and sad moments that leave the audience feeling quite fulfilled.
The Finale: I won’t give anything away for those of you who haven’t head the books, but the character who gets the grand finale at the end of Part 1 is one the best characters in the series and it was nice to see so much time spent on his departure.
The Action: After David Yates told me in an interview that this film was the slow film and the next one is the action film, I’m worried for the second. There was plenty of appariting, flying, fighting, torturing for me in this one… anymore and it might turn into a straight Tony Scot/Michael Bay action film — here’s to hoping that doesn’t happen!

The Bad:

One Plot Device to the Next: The film very much jumps from one set piece to another. You move locations, get one emotional set-up, a physical event and then a conclusion… rinse and repeat, over and over again. The film as a whole is extremely formulaic, albeit entertaining.
Dancing Scene: Luckily Yates saved this by the end, but the start of the scene where Harry and Hermoine have a spontaneous dance moment felt a bit contrived. It was hard not to feel like they were intentionally trying to emotionally manipulative the audience. We get enough of this from Twilight, lets just leave it out of Potter. Which reminds me…
Twilight Nod!?: Yes, the “Twilight Vs. Midnight” line in the film is in fact in the book as well BUT something about the way this was shot made it feel like the entire film paused for these couple of lines and brought attention to them. It was worsened by the fact that you could feel people in the audience stop, look at one another and then keep going. Anything that takes you out of the world that the movie has created takes away from the experience and should be cut. So many things get cut from the book to the screen, why is that one important? And to further that, they say it three times and then end with a “Twilight might be better”. Though it probably had nothing to do with the Twilight series it’s hard for audience goers right now not to connect the two and get distracted.
The END: If you can call it that! This is supposed to be a film, not an episode in a TV series. We don’t have one week to wait for the next “episode” but SEVERAL months. Although I like who got the finale, the abrupt stop felt like an obvious “now you have to pay for another ticket” chop between the two films. It’s no Pirates of the Caribbean 2, but it will leave you pissed you can’t see the rest!

Overall:

Though this film had some faults I could pick at, it was quite an entertaining film and kept me interested from the action-adventure start, through the emotional moments and to the non-ending.

Rating: 7/10

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson Are Done With Harry Potter

Next Friday the wait will finally be over. The end will begin at the opening of the latest Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. The wizard franchise has literally been 10 years in the making and we’ve seen its stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint grow from children to adults. Recently, the actors spoke out about their future plans and revealed whether or not they’d be interested in reprising their roles years down the line.

People have continued to question Potter creator/author JK Rowling about whether or not she’ll write more books. For the most part her responses have been pretty open. She’s never said never, which means more Potter books and films could still be in our future. But if that is the case we shouldn’t expect Radcliffe or Watson to be a part of them.

In an interview with Sky News, Radcliffe said that it was “very doubtful” that he would return for a future film. And when asked about the possibility of more Potter books he said, “Oh God, she promised me categorically that there wouldn’t be another book involving Harry.” We guess a decade is enough of Harry for him.

As for Watson, the actress and college student wants to explore her options. She said, “This was one role and it transformed the whole of my life. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that this is what’s going to make me happy. I want to be able to explore a few other things as well.”

There you go. Two of the main actors want to stretch their wings after playing the same roles for half of their lives. Can we really blame them?

This is the first day of November, which means Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is right around the corner. The film marks the beginning of the end for our wizard trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. With Part I hitting theaters on November 19th, Warner Bros has decided to give you one last behind the scenes look at the story of The Deathly Hallows. Check it out…

Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction–the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. New Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Banners

After the debut of the latest Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer, the internet went insane! Fans of the series are really amped to see how it all ends and Warner Bros continues to keep us on our toes with their marketing campaign. The studio has released three new character banners that feature Harry, Hermione, and Ron and they look rough — well, Ron looks great but the other two look terrible. Check them out…

We know that Harry will face his biggest challenge yet in The Deathly Hallows, but we’re pretty sure Ron will get his hands dirty too, so why does he look amazing here? Everyone else looks like they’ve been to hell and back and he’s clean and together. What happened to Hermione’s face? It looks like she’s bleeding.

The tagline on each poster reads, “Nowhere is safe.” Perhaps it should say “Nowhere is safe for Harry and Hermione” because Ron doesn’t appear to be shaken by any of this. And before any diehard Potter fans attack, you have to admit there’s an inconsistency.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I opens in theaters on November 19th and Part II opens on July 15, 2011. Both films are directed by David Yates.

Emma Watson Cast in My Week With Marilyn

Emma Watson is wasting no time with her post-Harry Potter career. The 20 year old is currently enrolled in Brown University and is still acting on the side. The latest film to catch her eye is entitled My Week with Marilyn. It’s directed by Simon Curtis, and is a period piece that centers on, you guessed it Marilyn Monroe. But this isn’t a biopic, it’s an ensemble that has a lot more to offer than its title star.

According to the Daily Mail, Watson has joined the cast that already includes Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Dominic Cooper and Judi Dench. My Week With Marilyn centers on a young man named “Colin Clark (Redmayne), who worked as Laurence Olivier’s assistant on the picture The Prince And The Showgirl, which starred bombshell Marilyn Monroe (Williams) and Olivier ( Branagh), who also directed.”

Watson will star as Lucy, a wardrobe assistant working behind the scenes during the making of The Prince And The Showgirl in 1956. It’s not not a big role but her character will share a few dates with Clark. Her portion of the film is said to only take a few days to shoot and after that it’s back to the books.

New Harry Potter Photos: Harry, Hermione, and Ron Hit the Road

It must be our lucky week because Warner Bros has just released another batch of photos from their upcoming sequel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. On Wednesday they previously unveiled a few images that featured Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Bill Nighy, now they’ve put out another three! Take a look at the wizards as they hit the open road…

The photos made their big debut in the print edition of Empire Magazine (they always have first dibs) and now their online for the whole world to see. They feature “Sirius Black’s broken mirror, Harry using the Lumos spell and a long shot of the heroic trio traveling on foot.” The group is on the move! The more we see from this film the more excited we get. It’s hard to believe it’s almost over. This build up is ridiculous.

Two New Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Featurettes

Last Friday, we brought you the first behind the scenes clip from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Over the weekend, ABC Family premiered two new featurettes that take us inside the latest and final adventure in the Potter series. In the first video we discover that the 3 magical musketeers spend a good chunk of the movie on the run. This might be where we get to see Hermione and Ron get up close and personal if you know what I mean. I haven’t read the books but I have heard that they’re supposed to kiss in Part II of the Deathly Hallows.

The second video highlights the amped up action that takes place in this film in comparison to the previous installments. Radcliffe states that he THOUGHT he was in pretty good shape before shooting began but he got a rude awakening when he arrived on set. Watson echoed his sentiments but claimed that all the running was worth it because the scene itself is incredible!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I will hit theaters on November 19 2010, and Part II will be released on July 15th, 2011. Both installments are directed by David Yates.
