Remember Me: Movie Review

Just when we thought our tear ducts could rest until the next Twilight installment, Robert Pattinson strikes again! This time, though, he’s sporting a normal set of teeth. Summit Entertainment presents Will Fetters’ debut screenplay, Remember Me, directed by Allen Coutler – also starring Emilie de Ravin, Chris Cooper, Lena Olin, Tate Ellington, and Pierce Bronsan.

The Plot:

Pattinson plays Tyler, a student at NYU, who’s currently coping with the regularities of college-y existence, and the aftermath of his brother’s suicide that has inspired much family turbulence. de Ravin plays Ally, the daughter of a cop who arrests Tyler and his putz of a roommate, Aiden, for getting involved in a bar fight. She, too, goes to NYU, and what better way to get back at a cop then to scam on his daughter? This practical joke evolves into something substantial, and Remember Me develops into a very realistic portrait of love, family, and everyday existence.

The Good:

The Writing: A bar fight is what allegedly inspired Fetters to write this piece. No previous writing experience, no college-degree in film – just a normal guy with a story to tell. This, perhaps, could account for his perfectly ordinary characters and their all too familiar conflicts. The dialogue is both sadly and laughably reminiscent of conversations we’ve all had with our families, lovers, and friends. There’s a quality to Fetters’ writing that captures the audience quite effortlessly, because the moment we can relate, we’re hooked.
Theme: ***SPOILER ALERT***The film ends with Tyler inside of The World Trade Center on 9/11, seconds before the first plane hits. The bulk of the film highlights the every day tragedies of the common man that we, in some capacity, can modify with effort. This idea of recognizing what we can control versus what is indisputably out of our hands (in this case 9/11) resonates immensely with the audience.***SPOILER ALERT END***

The Bad:

Acting: I’m not quite sure what planet Robert Pattinson was on while this film was shot, but it certainly wasn’t earth. He’s totally removed from his surroundings. It’s as if he’s in his own movie, and the other characters are subtle accessories who’ve been hired to adorn his performance. He’s talking, and smiling, and smoking – but there’s very little life or chemistry in any of the handful of relationships he’s in. De Ravin was equally disappointing, and visibly unsure of every word that came out of her mouth -as if she was still in rehearsal, stretching to find some inspiration but embellishing most of it.
Acting Part B: Fetters’ writing is a playground for any young artist. Not because tackling these roles should be particularly challenging/exciting for the average actor, but because his writing offers the rare gift of realism – something we seldom see in a film about young love. Pattinson and de Ravin had the opportunity to reinforce a crucial message, and portray people who could undoubtedly move an audience based simply on their realistic nature. And they blew it.

Overall:

We’ve got great writing and a great message butchered by less-than-great actors. It’s that simple.

Robert Pattinson in Remember Me Shower Scene

A new clip has been released for Robert Pattinson‘s new film Remember Me, and it has the British actor all wet. In the film, he plays a troubled college student named Tyler who finds acceptance from a young woman named Ally, played by “Lost‘s” Emilie de Ravin. The film is a drama, but the latest promo clip focuses on the fun, romantic side of its story.

In the scene Tyler and Ally are joking around in the kitchen, while trying to learn a little more about each other. The mood is playful, but it turns into an all out war of water. He sprays her with the sink hose, and she retaliates by attacking him with food. Eventually they both end up in the shower with their clothes on and we end up with a typically awkward movie scene where they stop, look into each others eyes, and lock lips.

Remember Me centers on Pattinson’s character Tyler, a rebellious young man in New York City who has a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) due to the death of a close relative. He didn’t think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through until he met Ally (Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. But in typical cinematic fashion, hidden secrets are revealed that threaten to destroy the relationship the young couple has worked so hard to build.

Remember Me hits theaters next month on March 12th, and is directed by Allen Coulter.

Robert Pattinson’s Official Remember Me Poster

The first official poster for Twilight favorite Robert Pattinson‘s film, Remember Me has just been released by Summit Entertainment. The movie’s supposed to be a hardcore drama about death, love, and forgiveness all rolled into one, yet the following poster looks like an ad for Kay Jewelers…

In Remember Me, Pattinson plays Tyler, a rebellious young man in New York City who has a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) due to the death of a close relative. He didn’t think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through until he met Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. But in typical cinematic fashion, hidden secrets are revealed that threaten to destroy the relationship the young couple has worked so hard to build.

As much as I hate to admit it, the poster does paint a pretty picture of both actors. It’s sweet, but not too sweet like the one sheet for the upcoming Nicholas Sparks flick, Dear John. Even though Remember Me isn’t at the top of my 2010 must see list, I might give it a shot later down the line.

Robert Pattinson’s Remember Me Trailer

Just in time for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, a trailer has been released for Rob Pattinson‘s next feature film, Remember Me. It’s definitely no Twilight and the trailer shows the actor taking on some heavy scenes opposite Pierce Brosnan, and for those of you who are a bit more hormone driven, there’s a few shots of Rob getting it on with is co-star Emile de Ravin.

Robert Pattinson plays Tyler, a rebellious young man in New York City who has a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan). Tyler didn’t think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through until the day he met Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. But soon, hidden secrets are revealed, and the circumstances that brought them together slowly threaten to tear them apart.

Some of the drama in this trailer could be dialed down a bit. It’s almost like their trying too hard to show us how screwed up this kid is. On the plus, side we get to see Pierce Brosnan in a suit again, without it James Bond related. He will be the ultimate draw for me to see this movie.

Pierce Brosnan Cast as Robert Pattinson’s Dad

The cast of the Allen Coulter drama Remember Me has added a trio of stars to its roster. The film already features teen idol Robert Pattinson, whom fans have affectionately renamed R. Pattz. According to Empire, former Bond guy Pierce Brosnan, Lost cast member Emilie de Ravin and Oscar winner Chris Cooper are in final negotiations to join the film.

Remember Me is a story about a young man (Pattinson) who aimlessly drifts through life after seeing his brother commit suicide, and his parents divorce. De Ravin’s character faces a similar situation when her mother is abruptly killed in front of her and she’s forced to deal with the aftermath. Instead of shying away from life like Pattinson’s character she chooses to embrace it. Chris Cooper will star as de Ravin’s father, while Brosnan and Lena Olin will play Pattinson’s parents.

The screenplay for Remember Me was co-written by Jenny Lumet (daughter of Sidney), who also wrote the screenplay for Rachel Getting Married. Like the other stars of Twilight, Pattinson looks to be capitalizing off of his overnight success. I’m not sold on his range of acting since I haven’t really seen any of his work. With the exception of one Harry Potter film, I’m an R. Pattz newbie. I’ve yet to get into the Twilight Saga, and I probably won’t anytime soon. That franchise just doesn’t appeal to me.
