Matthew McConaughey Beats, Murders, And Charms In Violent ‘Killer Joe’ Trailer

Remember when William Friedkin made interesting, visceral, and coolly brilliant films that both tapped into and helped direct the cultural zeitgeist? Films like The Boys in the Band, The French Connection and The Exorcist? After experiencing a 20 year nadir with films like Jade and The Hunted, Friedkin returned in 2007 with the small, off-kilter Bug. And though Bug worked well, it’s the trailer for Killer Joe, his newest film, that seems to be announcing Friedkin’s true return to form.

The story of a young man (Emile Hirsch), so deeply indebted to a drug lord that his life is at stake, hires Joe (Matthew McConaughey), a police officer moonlighting as a hired killer, to murder his mother (Gina Gershon) so that he and his sister (Juno Temple) can get their hands on the insurance money. Things go awry, however, when the charmingly sociopathic Joe decides to take Temple as collateral on the job, and a bizarre kind of romance seems to bloom between the killer and his hostage.

While it all sounds a bit wacky, the trailer sells it well, and Friedkin is never better than when taking his characters and dropping them in violent, extraordinary circumstances. Also, McConaughey has completely dropped his smirky rom-com coasting mode and is actually acting again—definitely worth a look.

It’s easy to see why Killer Joe has had such a protracted battle with the MPAA (it’s been slapped with an NC-17 rating); that said, it looks like there may be no reason not to see Killer Joe when it hits theaters on July 27.

Benicio Del Toro Plays Tough in Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’ Trailer

Oliver Stone‘s Savages feels like a comeback. Maybe it is, in that it’s a comeback into mainstream cinema. His last film was a sequel to Wall Street, and that film has already been lost to time. This is a big crime-filled ensemble drama/action movie, and it looks like a winner (mostly). The film is due out July 6, and features Benicio Del Toro, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Salma Hayek and John Travolta. And now we have a trailer.

The crime film goes through cycles of popularity, and it’s been a while since there’s been a mainstream attempt at it. The presence of John Travolta (and Salma Hayek’s haircut) gives it the ghostly feeling of being a riff on Pulp Fiction and the multitude of films that it inspired. It’s been long enough that could feel like a breath of fresh air.

The biggest problem here seems to be Hayek, who is trying very hard to convey a dangerous woman. That moment where she takes a bite feels like it’s been coached out of her. Also, the script comes from Shane Salerno, who wrote the terrible Alien Vs. Predator sequel Requiem. Still, this looks interesting and when Stone misses the mark it’s usually a fascinating ride.

Catherine Hardwicke’s Hamlet to be a Horror Film?

Why Catherine Hardwicke? What’s the point of this madness? According to Collider, Hardwicke’s vision for her upcoming Hamlet adaptation will be something like we’ve never seen before. It will feature her Lords of Dogtown star Emile Hirsch as the title character, and he recently spoke about the vision the director has for her take on the Shakespearean tale. More on the film below.

According to Hirsch we can expect for this Hamlet to have some serious horror influence.

“I’m working on a modern-day younger adaptation of Hamlet, in verse, molded to be almost like this supernatural horror movie. Where it’s not a horror-slasher movie, it’s like a suspense-horror… All the cast will be much younger and it’s geared towards a younger audience.

Do I smell Twilight rearing its ugly head? Please leave that with Stephenie Meyers, we don’t want it touching the classics. What’s so sad about this situation is that I’m not even against her trying to create a fresh take on the story. We’ve all seen Hamlet done so many times, that it’s become redundant. There is a Gothic element to the book that can be taken into the horror genre, I just don’t trust her with it.

I do like Emile Hirsch and I think he is one of the most talented actors in his age group right now. Seeing a younger Hamlet for a change wouldn’t be a bad thing, especially if the actor can handle the material. It’s the director I’m having issues with.

Catherine Hardwicke and Emile Hirsch Reunite for Hamlet

As we reported earlier Catherine Hardwicke may have been ousted from the Twilight franchise, but she’s got plenty of work to keep her busy. First we mentioned her adaptation of the comic book Maximum Ride, and now she’s prepping for a Shakespearean turn. Not only is she going “old English,” but she’s going for the epitome of the author’s work, Hamlet. According to Variety, Emile Hirsch will star as the lead in a Hardwicke directed adaptation of the literary masterpiece.

Hardwicke will direct a modern take on the classic play that will focus on a young man’s struggle between revenge and assimilation into modern society. The story is being adapted by Ron Nyswaner, and will be produced by Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen. This will be a reunion for Hirsch in many ways. The actor worked with Hardwicke on the 2005 film Lords of Dogtown, and with Jinks and Cohen on Milk.

Hamlet will also be produced by Overture Films and it’s CEO Chris McGurk explained why he felt comfortable backing another Hamlet adaptation.

“With its universal themes of death, revenge, love and even teen angst – the story of ‘Hamlet’ is perhaps as timely and influential today as it was when it was written over 400 years ago.”

He also feels that it’s been a long time since we’ve seen an actor who is “appropriately-aged “ to play the character. The company is looking for the film’s screenplay to be completed within the upcoming months, in which production will begin shortly after.

I’m personally partial to the 1990 Mel Gibson version myself. I can get down with Laurence Olivier’s 1948 adaptation, but I have to really be in the mood for it. Catherine Hardwicke’s taking on Shakespeare, who would have thought?

LIFE AND FILM: MILK Mimicks Reality

Just one week after one of the most historical elections in American history, rally’s and protests have been taking place all over the state of California, and it has nothing to do with the new president. By a close 52%, Proposition 8, a law which forbids same-sex marriage in the state, was passed.

The law has been heavily condemned by Hollywood celebrities, and many have lended their support to fight it. Actress Drew Barrymore attended a rally last week in Los Angeles, where she spoke openly about her position on the passing of Prop 8.

These events have arose during an interesting time, November 27, 2008 will mark the 30th anniversary of LGBT activist Harvey Milk’s untimely death. Milk was the first openly gay official elected into a political office, coincidentally in the state of California. A biopic entitled Milk, has been in the works for the past year and it will finally be released November 26 (Limited), and December 5 (Wide). The film stars Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, James Franco, and Diego Luna.

The Milk trailer gives insight into the activists fight for the rights of gays and lesbians in mainstream society. It sends a message of a hope; hope for a better future, hope for equality, and most importantly hope for change. To see people picketing on the same streets he picketed, and fighting the same fight 3 decades later is truly a testament to the times.
