Remember when William Friedkin made interesting, visceral, and coolly brilliant films that both tapped into and helped direct the cultural zeitgeist? Films like The Boys in the Band, The French Connection and The Exorcist? After experiencing a 20 year nadir with films like Jade and The Hunted, Friedkin returned in 2007 with the small, off-kilter Bug. And though Bug worked well, it’s the trailer for Killer Joe, his newest film, that seems to be announcing Friedkin’s true return to form.

Oliver Stone‘s Savages feels like a comeback. Maybe it is, in that it’s a comeback into mainstream cinema. His last film was a sequel to Wall Street, and that film has already been lost to time. This is a big crime-filled ensemble drama/action movie, and it looks like a winner (mostly). The film is due out July 6, and features Benicio Del Toro, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Salma Hayek and John Travolta. And now we have a trailer.

Why Catherine Hardwicke? What’s the point of this madness? According to Collider, Hardwicke’s vision for her upcoming Hamlet adaptation will be something like we’ve never seen before. It will feature her Lords of Dogtown star Emile Hirsch as the title character, and he recently spoke about the vision the director has for her take on the Shakespearean tale. More on the film below.

As we reported earlier Catherine Hardwicke may have been ousted from the Twilight franchise, but she’s got plenty of work to keep her busy. First we mentioned her adaptation of the comic book Maximum Ride, and now she’s prepping for a Shakespearean turn. Not only is she going “old English,” but she’s going for the epitome of the author’s work, Hamlet. According to Variety, Emile Hirsch will star as the lead in a Hardwicke directed adaptation of the literary masterpiece.

Just one week after one of the most historical elections in American history, rally’s and protests have been taking place all over the state of California, and it has nothing to do with the new president. By a close 52%, Proposition 8, a law which forbids same-sex marriage in the state, was passed.
The law has been heavily condemned by Hollywood celebrities, and many have lended their support to fight it. Actress Drew Barrymore attended a rally last week in Los Angeles, where she spoke openly about her position on the passing of Prop 8.
