Woody Allen’s ‘To Rome With Love’ Gets Trailered

It would be interesting if Woody Allen‘s To Rome With Love was his capper to a foreign city trilogy. He recently made Vicky Christina Barcelona, and last year’s Midnight in Paris, so why not? Rome stars Allen, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page, along with Oscar winner Roberto Benigni. The film opens June 22, and here’s the film’s trailer.

Some of this looks familiar, as Cruz is playing the daffy hooker that’s been in a number of Allen’s works (most notably in Mighty Aphrodite, which won an Oscar for Mira Sorvino). That’s always been the problem with late-stage Allen: He’s a big recycler. But what’s great is the return of Judy Davis to Allen’s films, and Roberto Benigni. The latter got a bad rap after his Oscar win, but Life is Beautiful is a great movie that holds up, and Benigni is a comic master (if you doubt that, watch him in Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth or Down by Law).

Allen uses Baldwin very well in the trailer, and this looks funny, but many of Allen’s later comedies have felt antiquated and not all that hilarious. This is a peppy, energetic trailer, and after the commercial and critical success of Midnight in Paris, it’s good to have Woody slightly more in the spotlight. He’s got a great ensemble here, so let’s just hope it’s better than You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger or Whatever Works.

Interview: Liv Tyler and Ellen Page for Super

It’s a tough road for women in a super-hero movie. Few get to be more than love interests. But that’s not the case in James Gunn‘s Super. Ellen Page she gets to play the superhero sidekick, who’s way more trouble than expected. And for Liv Tyler, she gets to play not the love interest of Rainn Wilson‘s superhero Crimson Bolt, but his wife – who’s succumbed to addiction yet again and has left him for another man. Neither is waiting around to be saved, and that may have been what drew both to Super, which opens Friday in theaters and on VOD. We talked to both women about the film. Check it out.

Liv Tyler:

Can you talk about your look for this film?

Liv Tyler: With this character I changed my hair color, I wanted her to blend in to the world. I tried to go a dirty natural blonde, but it was a disaster. It looked so bad on me. My features disappeared, my lips, my eyes, they just went away. And soon as we added a little red, a little dark, everything came back in, but it was fun for me to play around with that, it wasn’t fun for my hair, which is still breaking off.

What brought you in to this film, because it is a departure from what we normally see you doing?

LT: I just read the script and fell in love with it. I don’t think I had done anything since The incredible Hulk – I had done The Strangers and The Hulk back to back and was doing Givenchy stuff, and being a mom, and I was looking for something. Honestly, my whole career I just read and find things that I fall in love with. And sometimes I get them, and sometimes I don’t. And this was something that I just really loved. And so I met with James (Gunn) and I knew that Rainn (Wilson) was attached and Ellen (Page) was attached so it all just came together, and I didn’t really overthink it too much. I just said “I’m going to try this and see what this is like, and I’m not going to make any money, and there’s no money for the movie, and I’m going to go to Shreveport, Louisiana and live in a hotel on the side of the highway, and it’s a twenty four day shoot, and it’s on video so there’s no playback, so it was a whole new experience. I’ve made really small independent films before, but this was – for sure – the smallest. But it was really liberating. It’s just an interesting exercise. And any chance I have to work in an ensemble with other actors that I love on a story that I love I grab that opportunity. I feel safest and happiest in that environment because as an actor that’s so fun.

It sounds like it was a ton of fun to work with Rainn Wilson and company?

LT: It was fun but we were all there to work. We really didn’t have a lot of time. That’s one of the things about a bigger budget movie – you have a lot more time to lounge around, drink cappuccinos and giggle and long leisurely lunches – we didn’t have that. So we all had to be very mindful and very prepared, very focused, just go to work. There were a lot of set ups every day, a lot of dialogue, a lot of action, a lot of “we have two hours to get this, so here we go.” James was very good at being specific and prepared with what he had shot for shot – every single detail. That was a big help.

Did you have a rehearsal period?

LT: We went down to Shreveport, and Rainn and I went to a local indie theater down there, and they let us use a room in their space to rehearse, but we just wound up talking and going over ideas, but we didn’t really rehearse-rehearse. We didn’t have a lot of time. I think that Rainn and James worked together a lot more.

Did you get to play any with Kevin Bacon?

LT: We actually got to shoot the shit a lot more. One of our first days we were together we were sitting in a car for half the day, and most of scene took place out of the car. We would just sit in the car and chat the whole time. I’ve met him a few times – he’s a lovely man – and I enjoyed getting to hang out with him.

As a kid, did you ever have fantasies of being a superhero or superpowers?

LT: I had the Wonder Woman underoos, I still have them. My mom saved them. I guess so, I was in the weird generation of He-Man, which is not a superhero, but I really liked Scooby-Doo, and He-Man, and the Incredible Hulk, but the TV show was my first real introduction into superheroes. And I used to watch Batman and Robin – but the TV show, the campy version, which I was obsessed with. I was never that big of a comic person that I can remember. I was more into music than I was into comics.

What’s the greatest gift that filmmaking has given you?

LT: I feel so greatful when I look back and I’m thirty-three-years old and I’ve been working since I was fifteen, and the experiences that I’ve had – getting to work with Robert Altman twice, and Bernardo Bertolucci, I’ve worked with all kinds of interesting filmmakers and actors, some of whom have passed away. And I just think as a young woman how lucky I was to travel to some many different places and interesting people. I’m very observant, and I like to ask questions and getting to see things, so going somewhere and getting live there for a chunk of time – even Shreveport – I loved it. My driver was my best friend, I loved her. I asked her a million questions, I’m really curious, and I enjoy that part – getting to be a gypsy and exploring the world a little bit.

Ellen Page:

How did you land the role, how did this come to you? Did (James) Gunn just approach you asking please do this or…?

Ellen Page: He e-mailed me the script which was awesome and immediately I was stoked. I had just gotten back from Nova Scotia, I had just shot Inception and I think just finished and I was just excited to know that wow, Rainn (Wilson) wanted to do something together. And I immediately read the script and was I absolutely in. And grateful that James (Gunn) wrote a role like that for a young woman. I just feel lucky every time I get to play an interesting character like that cause it’s like few and far between.

What is your favorite part or treat in Boltie/Libby?

EP: Maybe just like her energy. I wish I had that energy all the time, I don’t obviously. I feel like an old lady sometimes.

How then would you get yourself geared up then for the shot?

Ellen Page: Just do it. Yeah, you just do it. Drink green tea and listen to some rock n’ roll and just go it. Rev yourself up. And when you’re working with someone like Rainn (Wilson), who’s constantly present, or the energy of James Gunn. You’re with two rad dudes who are just really amazing spirit.

This isn’t your first time in the comic book world, are you a comic book fan?

EP: You know, I’m not really. I’m kind of a weird, depressing graphic novel fan like that amazing graphic novel “Blankets.” So that’s kind of more my scene when it comes to comic graphic novel thing.

What else do you have going on future projects-wise?

EP: I’m really hoping to shoot a movie called Freeheld coming out really soon, it’s based on a true story, and is a documentary that won Best Short Subject at the Oscars a few years ago of the same name, so hopefully that’ll come together. And Ron Nyswaner is writing it, the same guy who did Philadelphia so hopefully that’ll come together. So I’m really hoping that will happen soon. Developing a show called “Stitch N Bitch” that I wrote with my friend Alia Shawkat and Sean Tillman, we all wrote it together. “Stitch N Bitch,” that’s the name of their hipster band. And yeah, mostly trying to develop stuff.

Are you optioning material?

EP: I’ve recently optioned a book and I probably shouldn’t say anything yet because it’s so recent. But I’m very excited about it so hopefully that’ll get rolling quickly and then we can talk about it. I mean it’s a book, it’s not a graphic novel or anything.

Rainn (Wilson) talked about how he considered himself to be the base of the film, sort of the calm and steady. So I guess that makes you the lead guitarist of it, Did you ever get him to break when you were doing a scene? Did you get him to laugh since you’re more of the comic figure?

EP: You know the scene where I’m showing off my sweet moves? I think I made him laugh a couple of times only because I looked like an idiot.

Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page in Super Movie Trailer

The first trailer for James Gunn’s feature film Super has been released. The movie is about a vigilante superhero and his overeager sidekick. Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page are the sadistic duo that take matters into their own hands when the cops fail. The play by their own rules and the law need not apply. Check them out in action…

Super centers on regular guy who takes on a superhero alter ego when his wife falls under the spell of a notorious drug dealer played by Kevin Bacon. And by spell we mean heroin, coke, crack, whatever drug he has in his arsenal. After she becomes a full on druggie he’s pushed to the edge and decides to take matters into his own hands.

Bacon looks pretty snazzy in this trailer. Granted he plays a horrible person, but he dresses nice. He’s almost a more modern version of his character Sebastian Shaw in X-Men First Class.

Doesn’t this bring back old Juno memories to see both Page and Wilson together again? It’s been too long.

Super opens in theaters on April 1st.

2012: Time For Change: DVD Review

2012: Time for Change is not like the 2012 you saw last year. There is no John Cusack running around in a limo or flying a giant Russian airplane, instead there is a hippie on a mission. This is a documentary about the earth and the connection humans have to it. It’s about preservation and using other ways aside from agriculture to feed people. There are some special appearances such as by notable director David Lynch and Oscar Nominee Ellen Page.

The Players:

Director: Joao G. Amorim
Starring: Daniel Pinchbeck, Maude Barlow, R. Buckminster Fuller, Gilberto Gil

The Plot:

2012: Time For Change is a documentary that presents ways to transform the unsustainable society into a regenerative planetary culture. According to the documentary and its director, this can be achieved through a personal and global change of consciousness and the systemic implementation of ecological design.

The Good:

Daniel Pinchbeck: Author Daniel Pinchbeck is no Michael Moore, but being the true pacifist that he is, he is able to carry the whole documentary on his shoulder. Whether he’s interviewing a regular Joe on the street, or spiritual leaders, or David Lynch, he’s always calm and it transmits to the viewer.
Appearances: Pinchbeck interviews, what some people would call, wackos. He deals with some pretty dedicated people who really care about greenhouse gases, water scarcity, economic devastation, yoga and Mother Earth, and by doing so he covers many a gamut of topics, and the viewer is able to get a better understanding on these things.
The illustrations: The director of this documentary has a day job as an animation and visual effects guy. Here he uses his expertise and add diversity and cool little stories into the mix.

The Not-So-Good:

Title of 2012: Time for Change: While you could never be sure of where a documentary will take you as director or producer, you could always change your title. 2012: Time for Change is deceiving. The documentary isn’t nearly as much about the year 2012, as it is about new age, new world order, yoga and connecting with the earth.

Overall:

2012: Time for Change is an education documentary that serves its purpose. It isn’t about the end of the world, though they do mention it a bit, it’s about connecting with the earth through other means than agriculture and industrialization. The conclusion is that we might be on the cusp of immense change, but for the good, because change is good.

Rating: 8/10

Comic-Con 2010: First Look at James Gunn’s Super

Director James Gunn, actors Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker and producers Ted Hope and Miranda Bailey were all in attendance to mock one another and show the first piece of footage from their upcoming film Super at Comic-Con 2010. Super is a film written and directed by Gunn about a ‘down-on-his-luck’ man who attempts to win his wife back from arms of glamorous drug dealer.

Will Super be worth your precious time?

Fuck yes. The footage from the film looks like Kick-Ass mixed with Defendor and then made as rude and comically vulgar as possible. It’s some of the most graphic humor I’ve seen. In a way, it’s like Zombieland but more offensively brilliant.

The footage for this film was almost indescribably hilarious. It holds absolutely nothing and will once again set a new bar for the mock comic book genre that’s been developing with Defendor, Paperman, Kick-Ass etc.

It’s so fun to see the dark, demented side of Wilson. He’s in your face, rude, dark, insulting, and not afraid to nail an innocent woman in the face with a wrench for talking back — and enjoy doing it. The director quoted him saying on set in reference to the abuse “this is my thing! Don’t knock it!” It’s fun to see Wilson take charge of the Super panel, repeatedly mock the producers voice, asking Liv Tyler and Ellen Page “do you talk or just sit there?” when they’re trying to be respectful and just overall impress us with his off-killer humor.

As for James Gunn, despite the fact that he’s extremely nice and accessible in person, when it comes to his films he takes no prisoners, if he’s going to make a movie that’s rude and insulting he’s going to take it to the limit.

The Wilson/Gunn combo is one to watch out for and the supporting cast only adds to its strength.

Inception: Movie Review

INCEPTION MOVIE REVIEW: It’s that time… time for all of you to go out and experience Inception. Some of you may have seen the film, others not, I have tried my best to keep any and all spoilers out of this review while still talking about the film as a whole. If you haven’t seen it, you should be fairly safe, if you have, there’s plenty for you to argue with me about as this is a rather massive review to reflect my enormous opinion about it.

Without anyone more pointless babble, lets get to it…

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio (Cobb), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Arthur), Ellen Page (Ariadne), Tom Hardy (Eames), Ken Watanabe (Saito), Dileep Rao (Yusuf), Cillian Murphy (Robert Fischer, Jr.), Tom Berenger (Browning), Marion Cotillard (Mal), Pete Postlethwaite (Maurice Fischer), Michael Caine (Miles), Lukas Haas (Nash)
Cinematography: Wally Pfister
Music: Hans Zimmer

The Plot:

Lets not talk about that shall we? The less you know about Inception the better (though that’s not to say that’s it’s hard to understand once you’re in the film ).

The Good:

The Overall Idea: This is one big concept to tackle. The idea of our dreams and how one effects them is a risky topic to tackle because it’s endless and quite complex. Nolan makes it not only easy to understand (in terms of the story) but raises many interesting debates on “mind travel” that will leave you arguing in comment sections on blogs for weeks to come!
The Visuals: I don’t think I need to go in depth on this one. If you’ve seen a poster, a trailer, any artwork from this film, you know you’re in for a visual treat. It’s a beautiful film to watch especially certain scenes…
The Fred Astaire Throw Back: Absolutely amazing. In case the the “Fred Astaire” reference didn’t made sense to you, the scene I’m referring to (don’t worry it’s on posters and in the trailer) is the one with Joseph Gordan Levitt and Co. fighting in the hotel hallway — it’s a high-tech, action packed, and a direct throw back to when Fred Astaire walked up the wall for the first time and blew audiences away. Somehow Nolan has found a way to bring back that sense of wonder despite all the decades of special effects that have dulled audiences. I believe this scene was shot the good ol’ fashioned way with a rotating hallway and some wires. There is something about using camera techniques instead of CGI that is so much more fun to watch and gives the film a sense of integrity and wonder that most blockbusters wouldn’t both with.
The Supporting Cast: This is for the Nolan new comers mostly — Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy and the rest all felt right at home in the film. They added to the acting credibility and gave us more than just one-liners. That being said, below I will talk about the problems with some of the repeat casting…
The Attempt: Despite how big of a director Nolan is, studios want him to make what works, not take any risks or attempt something out of the box. It would have been so easy for him and he would have been so loved by both audiences and studios for jumping into another Batman right after The Dark Knight. To add to that if this movie flops it could be detrimental to the sales of the next Batman. Nolan stepped away from a guaranteed hit and took a big risk on this film by following his dream and making something reminiscent of Memento but on the studios summer-action film dime. He’s ballsy on all levels and despite what I think about his film, I have to respect his decision to make this film, his process and for the most part the outcome of Inception. It wasn’t perfect but that’s because it wasn’t safe, he took a chance and came out successful. Which leads us to…

The Bad:

Lack of a Wow Factor: Don’t crucify me yet, give me a moment to explain. Before I saw this movie I heard people making comments like “wow this movie is mind-blowing” and “I love walking out of a movie not fully understanding it” and that made me SO excited! I thought it was going to be like the Matrix all over again, where you have to watch it 10 times and write an essay to fully grasp it. That being said, I got this movie about half way through and there was no real surprise or twist for me. Once you get the character, who is quite simple, it’s all there and the story never contradicts it.
Dialogue/Script: Once again Nolan is great at the grand concepts and this movie is about as big as one can get and I applaud him for going there, but with a limitless world, there sure was a lot of repeat dialogue and a lot of interesting things not discussed. Something tells me this was because someone got nervous about this film not having “mass appeal.” The fact is, this film would have been better with half the dialogue, not as much marketing spelling things out and letting the audience figure out some of the characters for themselves
Leo in the Lead: Although in many ways his character Cobb is a “noble” character, at the heart of it all, he’s kind of a sap. Yes, it’s sweet that he loves a women, but he’s not fighting for anything that I really care about or can side with. It’s nice that “he wants his family back” and that’s only enough to make me pity him, not enough for me to follow him through anything and risk other characters lives who I find more interesting. He’s not fighting for humanity, the world, he’s just fighting for himself and in a movie of this scale, you need to care about more than just some selfish dude. That coupled with Leo constantly delivering the same lines and once again, his boyish good looks getting in his way, I never really bought his character nor cared about what happened to him.
Repeat Casting: Yes I LOVE Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy but the fact is, I kept feeling like I was in the wrong movie and it was distracting. I wanted Murphy to go mad and poison people, and Caine to pour some hot tea and give Batman some advice. Although they are amazing actors, Nolan would have been better off finding a whole new cast or at least making them look different or changing their accents! Their dress and demeanor was too similar and therefore confusing for the audience.

The Problem:

Nolan takes an incredibly hard concept to grasp and tries to make it understandable for mass audiences (something I’m sure the studios wanted in order to make back their massive budget), but in trying to make it both a mind blowing experience and easy to grasp for everyone, it lost its luster and falls short of a complete mind-blowing experience. Nolan is capable of taking this film one step further, cutting the unnecessary dialogue and shaping it into a mind-boogling and yet entertaining film. He’s done it before with Memento, he did a great job at handling Batman, and in this one I feel like we get Nolan at 80% and I can’t help but wonder what he could have done if he would have gone all the way.

I don’t know what the cause was, the script, the hero, the cut, or the studio, but something held this film back. This is a good film and enjoyable to watch, but not great and there was the potential in this to be something epic.

Rating: 8/10

New Inception Banners Turn the World Upside Down

Warner Bros is really bringing their A-game with the marketing of Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Inception. The movie has a radical premise, a great director, and a talented ensemble cast, what more could you ask for? Just yesterday we brought you a behind the scenes featurette that included interviews with both Leonardo DiCaprio and Nolan discussing the crazy world, in which the film takes place and here are four banners that illustrate exactly what they were talking about…

With the exception of one, the posters feature most of the cast together staring at some type of devastating event. It’s visually stunning and we can’t wait to see what this stuff looks like in motion on the big screen.

Inception centers on DiCaprio’s character Cobb, an expert thief who can travel into people’s dreams and steal their secrets. For the most part he’s been successful and avoided capture but that track record might come to an end when he’s asked to do the impossible. Instead of taking someone’s idea he has to plant one in their subconscious at its very beginning, at its inception. The film co-stars, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, and Cillian Murphy.

Inception will open in theaters nationwide on July 16, 2010, but who can really wait that long?!

Jason Patric Joins HBO’s Tilda

If you’re one of the many people who missed Jason Patric’s off the wall performance in this spring’s The Losers, don’t worry because there’s more where that came from. According to Deadline, Patric has signed on to star in HBO’s new blogger series, “Tilda.” As previously announced, Oscar winner Diane Keaton will play the title character and it looks like Patric will star as her arch rival!

“Tilda” marks Patric’s first regular stint on a television series and will feature him as Andrew Brown, “the mastermind behind the media empire RMG, which Tilda is trying to expose the inner workings of.” The show was written by Bill Condon and Cynthia Mortcast and is scheduled to begin production this month in Los Angeles.

The cast of “Tilda” also includes Ellen Page and Wes Bentley (what’s he been up to lately)? Am I the only one who’s been waiting for him to make a legitimate comeback? As for Page, she’ll appear in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated summer blockbuster Inception alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in July.

“Tilda” will center on a powerful female online Hollywood journalist with a no-holds-barred style, which is said to be loosely based on Nikki Finke.

New Inception Character Banners Look Amazing!

Holy crap! The marketing for Christopher Nolan’s Inception continues to get better and better. Warner Bros has just released seven new banners from the film and they look awesome! They feature each of the main characters and what appears to be their code names. We’re not sure what they mean, but we’re assuming they have something to do with their involvement in the “inception” dream process. Take a look…

Don’t these look badass? Leonardo DiCaprio is described as The Extractor, Ellen Page is The Architect, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is The Point Man, Ken Watanabe is The Tourist, Marion Cotillard is The Shade, Tom Hardy is The Forger, and Cillian Murphy is The Mark. We’re not even going to pretend we know what any of them really do but they sound intriguing.

Ellen Page to Play A Lesbian in Freeheld

Oscar nominated actress Ellen Page, who’s best known for her performance in the 2007 hit Juno has landed a new gig. According to Cinematical, Page will play a lesbian auto mechanic in the film Freeheld, an adaptation of Cynthia Wade’s award winning documentary of the same name.

Page will play Stacie Andree, the girlfriend of a dying New Jersey police officer named Laurel Hester. In addition to fighting cancer, Hester fights the county to get her pension benefits passed on to her partner. During the time the original documentary was shot such privileges were reserved solely for (heterosexual) married couples not (homosexual) domestic partners (a debate that’s still going on today). The screenplay for Freeheld will be written by Oscar-nominated writer Ron Nyswaner.

Following other mainstream films involving the gay community such as Milk and Brokeback Mountain, this will probably be a tear jerker because it’s tackling a serious issue that a lot of people can relate to. The fact that Page is willing to step up and take on such controversial material is commendable. It looks like she’s getting back to the days of her grittier, edgier self (remember her striking performance in Hard Candy?)

Over the weekend Warner Bros debuted a brand new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception and as a follow up they’ve unleashed 3 TV spots. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and once again reunites Michael Caine (The Dark Knight, The Prestige), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), and Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins) with Nolan. It looks like a lot of crazy sh*t is going down between DiCaprio and other people’s subconscious. The film also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard. Inception will hit theaters on July 16, 2010.

Four new photos from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Inception have debuted online and they feature Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Ellen Page. The film is set to open in theaters on July 16th meaning we still have a few months to go until the big day. Inception‘s plot is very vague but the more photos that are released, the easier it is for us to decipher who hates who and who’s doing what. Take a look…

A couple of weeks ago at the ShoWest Film Festival some footage was shown to the attending audience that explained a little more than what we’ve seen in the trailers. Story wise, it looks like DiCaprio’s character has the ability to enter people dreams, and with that power he tries to solve OR prevent crimes. Confused? You should be because nothing from this film is what it seems. In the trailer Levitt and DiCaprio’s characters are bouncing off walls (literally) trying to attack each other and in this group of photos they appear to be allies.

Levitt’s character looks like he’s up to no good. Whenever someone is placing a large amount of explosives in a duffel bag in a movie that almost always means they’re a villain of some sort. When the film comes out we’ll see if my hypothesis is correct.
