Though his career went through many iterations (he started writing scripts for films like Taking Care of Business, Regarding Henry and Gone Fishing), it was TV where J.J. Abrams found his groove. There he masterminded Felicity, Alias, and helped launch Lost. Then he returned to cinema with the semi-success Mission: Impossible: III, and then earned fanboy love for his resurrection of the Star Trek franchise – which made the franchise cooler than Star Wars. For Super 8, he teamed with Steven Spielberg to make a film meant to recall the glory days of Amblin productions. How did it turn out?

The Players

Writer/Director: J.J. Abrams

Stars: Joel Courtney, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Elle Fanning

Cinematography: Larry Fong

The Story

Joe Lamb (Courtney) has recently lost his mother. His protective father (Chandler) is worried about him, but isn’t around and wants to send him off for the summer to baseball camp. Joe wants to help his friends finish their monster movie, which appears to be a riff on Night of the Living Dead. They recruit Alice Dainard (Fanning), who Joe crushes on, but the night of her big scene there’s a trainwreck that lets loose… something. As their town is taken over by the military the boys try to finish their film, and Joe and Alice try to get past her father (Eldard), who had something to do with the death of Joe’s mother.

The Good

The Kids: Child actors are notoriously difficult to wrangle, and so when you get performances like Joel Courtney’s and Elle Fanning’s on screen, it’s a minor miracle. Both bring dimension and sympathy to their roles, and when they face the stirrings of young love, it’s a believable attraction. But the film has a group of young actors who manage to command the screen without being reduced to quirks.

The Set Up: ‘Though obviously cribbing from the Spielberg playbook, the opening twenty or thirty minutes set up a great little film about a child suffering from the loss of his mother, and turning to making movies (and finding love) to renew his interest in life. For the opening, Abrams does a great job of laying out how things will come in to play.

The Bad

The Payoff: Alas, the stuff with the alien goes nowhere good, and when the alien is finally revealed, it’s curiously unmemorable. Regardless of whether they’re scary or cuddly, from Star Wars, to the alien in Alien to E.T. to Close Encounters, when you think about those movies, you can remember the aliens. Here, when the creature is revealed, it’s a moment of “oh” instead of “awesome!” That sums up a lot of the problems with the movie, and Abrams recent “mystery box” output. And where Spielberg may have given aliens some menace in Close Encounters, Abrams uses his alien as a plot device instead of a character. The Alien kidnaps people and eats them, but then he’s not a bad guy – even though he is a bad guy for the majority of the film, which undercuts the ending so much. There is neither triumph or relief.

Take out the Spielberg, and…: The film seems geared to work on people who love those Amblin films of their childhood, but while Raiders of the Lost Ark was a homage to the films Spielberg and George Lucas loved as children, that film works on its own and has no one father. This has only one source, and if you aren’t nostalgic for Spielberg’s work, then the film probably won’t work for you. The classic Spielberg films work because of their elegantly simple stories (“What if an alien was your best friend?” “What if you could meet aliens, how far would you go to do so?”) This narrative is a clutter, and when you try to find something that’s more than homage, there’s little there.

What’s it all about?: J.J. Abrams as a director has made three films. Before that he was hot screenwriter, but if you look at those early movies, you see someone who knows how to repackage previous successful ideas. It’s a very good way to make money, but the majority of his earlier films are not that good. When you talk about his directing career, his best work is Star Trek, which gave the series back its 60′s sexual swagger and added more comic banter, which opened the characters up to a whole new generation. Three pictures in, and Abrams has little personality or curiosity as a filmmaker. Super 8 is his most personal work (if only because it’s not based on pre-existing material), and after making Star Trek viable again, it feels like the “one for you” movie as the film’s proved a hard sell. And yet when you take away the film’s love of that era of films (more so Spielberg than the film’s references to George Romero and John Carpenter), you hope to find something more. But Abrams never seems to connect to the material like Spielberg did – Joe Lamb is the audience’s avatar, but how he’s dealing with his mother’s passing, and how that relates to the narrative at hand never congeals.

Adding Up: The film seems to be building to the moment that the 8mm footage of the train wreck is developed, but that moment – and many moments like it – never play like the wow moments they should. Just like the tension between the two fathers or the Romeo and Juliet-esque star-crossed lovers stuff. Or even the baseball camp threat. It peters.

Overall

The kids are enough to make this more misfire than terrible, and there’s at least two good movies in here, but Super 8 never is enough of an alien vs. the army/government movie or a film about children falling in love with making movies while dealing with loss to make either strand satisfying. Technically, Abrams is confident behind the camera and the film is put together well (obligatory “lots of lens flare” reference here), but for all the good things about it – like seeing Kyle Chandler kick a little ass – it’s less than the sum of its parts.

Score: 5/10

Classic Steven Spielberg is back! The film legend is one of the producers for J.J. Abrams sci-fi flick Super 8, and it has old school Amblin written all over it. The first official trailer for the movie debuted during last night’s Super Bowl and it did not disappoint. We got a great look at the cast, which includes Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning, and a mystical creature that has a small town on edge. Does this premise sound familiar? Check out the TV Spot…

Abrams recently spoke to The LA Times and opened up about the story that lies behind all the special effects and action.

“This is a movie about overcoming loss and finding your way again and finding your own voice,” Abrams says of the film’s tone, “A boy whose lost his mother and the man whose lost his wife. There’s this father who, because of the era, never really had to be the parent. He’s a good man, he works hard, he’s a deputy in the town, but he’s never stepped up as father.”

He also confirmed that the film will be set in 1979 Ohio and “introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes — a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman.”

This sounds like old school Spielberg at its best!

Super 8 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 10, 2011.

What do you think of the first trailer for Super 8?

Meet the young star who will soon steal you heart away in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, the lovely and poised, Elle Fanning. Though it’s easy to compare her with her sister because much like Dakota she’s extremely beautiful and talented, she’s very much her own spirit. Her role in Coppola’s film will no doubt put her on the map — which is a good thing because she’s got a hell of a line-up of films ahead of her.

Find out how she keeps it all together and lives as much of a normal life as possible while being a part of a very Hollywood family and making a very Hollywood film…

Getting Started:

Your character had to be good at two things, cooking and ice-skating, were you good at both of those already?

Yes, I’ve always loved cooking. So that sort of came naturally, but the ice skating I really had to work on. I’d done ballet before, so the posture and the grace sort of helped. But I’ve never figure skated or done any spins or jumps on ice or anything. So I had to train for about three months with these two trainers and I got up every morning before school at about 5, and I went after school to the rink as well.

Once I got a little better Sofia came and watched me and picked out a song she wanted me to dance to. So she worked with the choreographer to get the feeling of it. I learned the whole routine, which took a while, and after it neither Sophia or Steven saw me ice skate until that day. Everyone was in the stands, the whole crew, and they were clapping and it felt really good. I wasn’t the best, but I think it was a perfect amount. It was fun.

We heard and you and Stephen have a lot in common?

It was weird because one day we named about 20 things that we had in common off our fingers. We both went to the same school, we’re both from Georgia, we both bite our nails. We both like things crispy and well done – our food. So we just went on and on one day, it carried on to the next day!

What was the process for you to get the role?

When I first met Sofia, I didn’t know anything about the script or anything. I just met her and she wanted to get to know me. It was a really long time until I saw her again so I thought, “Oh I didn’t get the part” – I was sort of bummed out. And then she called me back and told me to come and read some lines at the Chateau, I guess she wanted to see our bond together. Once she saw us do the lines and things we started filming the movie and did all the rehearsal stuff.

How did you and Stephen prep your relationship:

We did a lot of stuff. Sofia wanted us to really get to know each other. She sort of scheduled things she wanted us to do. He came and picked me up from school one day and we went to Pinkberry, this frozen yogurt place. After that I took him to this one pottery store where you can make your own pottery – Color Me Mine. He made an ashtray, of course, and he drew a cigarette on there with smoke coming out. He wasn’t really quite sure how to do it, I was like “you have to paint everything or it won’t glaze over when they burn it.” And then I did a soap dish with an ice skate on it and I put “Cleo” on it. And we both made this wine glass that said Somewhere and we gave it to Sofia at the end, which was fun. When we went to pick up the glaze version, his turned out really good! He put all these multi-colors on it but it just turned out all orange.

The Chateau

What was it like filming at such a famous location in LA like the Chateau?

The Chateau is really close to my house so I just got up in the morning and went over there and spent the whole day there basically. Beforehand we did a lot of rehearsals at the Chateau because our characters really had to know it well. Before the movie and the rehearsal stuff I’d never really been there that much – but of course I’d heard of it. It’s this really iconic place. Mostly I just knew it was the hotel where Marylin Monroe stayed, because I’m obsessed with her, I love her! So, that’s basically he only thing I knew about it. Then we found out a lot of secrets. You know the ping pong area with the bushes around it? If you look in the bushes and really search there are ping pong paddles and ping pong balls stuck in there so people can come and know where they hid them and grab them so they’ll always have them. We were always rummaging through the bushes.

What was one of the craziest moments at the Chateau?

We were there, like, every day. Let’s see. I don’t know if there was anything super crazy as extreme as the movie. Steven stayed there during the whole movie but I think it gets way wilder in the night time, I wasn’t there during that period.

Is the place very cliched Hollywood?

When you come off the elevator there are people hanging out in their sun glasses and high heels. The Chateau is sort of like the third character in the movie, it’s so alive, like a real person.

Feel like Eloise?

Yeah, because we were, like, going everywhere. Running through the halls. Also, the elevator there is so slow. It’s the slowest thing ever! So we always took the stairs. We had races up the stairs to the 5th floor where our hotel room was.

Working and Learning With Hollywood Legends:

You have a movie coming up with Sofia’s father Francis, right?

Right now I’m doing two movies, one’s called Super 8 with J.J. Abrams, the next one is Twix Now And Sunrise which is with Francis. In February I’m doing another movie called We Bought A Zoo with Cameron Crowe – we’re almost done with Super 8, it’s very secretive. There are kids in it. I can’t really say anything, we just filmed in West Virginia and then we came back and now we’re filming more in LA, we wrap the 16th. He has kids so he’s really good with knowing everything. It’s cool to go to Sofia’s set which is so calm and sort of small and J .J’s set is so big with explosion and things like that.

Are Francis and Sofia similar?

I can see where Sofia gets all her talent. He’s such a legend, it’s so weird to be actually looking at him. At the same time he’s just this Italian guy. His set is as calm but his voice is much louder than Sofia’s.

Have they taught you secrets or told you any cautionary tales on growing up in Hollywood? Does the Coppola family help shield you from it?

I feel like I know people who went through that and I think Sofia sort of based in on that. I do my normal thing and go off and do movies so I’m not so involved. Like, Johnny in the movie, he only has his movies and that’s it. He doesn’t really have another life. I feel like you should have another place to sort of go off to.

As you get older are you going to try to maintain a separate life?

For sure. I feel like my family will really help me with that because they really care about me. Johnny doesn’t really have anyone who cares about him.

“Film family” come together then splits apart – have you stayed connected?

Right after the movie ended we were so sad. You always feel like you’re never going to see them ever again. But then we went to Venice together, we were all reunited, some of the crew came. Then Steven called me and said “We won the Golden Lion!” That was great. Me and Sofia e-mail a lot, we keep in touch and I talk to her kids and her daughters and stuff. We’ve really kept together in this one. And now we’re doing all this, it’s good, I do see them.

Family:

What’s it like going to school at Campbell Hall?

It’s fun, I just started 7th grade, it’s on a hill our school. Elementary is on the lower grade then you move up on the hill and you’re in middle school then you move up and you’re in high school. So we’ve moved up on the hill! It’s fun to, just, sort of be normal and go to regular school. That’s something that my parents and me and my sister really wanted. It’s good that we have that. My school is really good, they let me leave and bring my work with me so I can do it on set and keep up with my classmates.

Do you have a lot of fans at school?

Yeah, I was home schooled up until third grade. Once my sister went to high school in 9th grade, I went to fourth grade. Then it was, like, everyone was really excited. I think they were mostly excited because I was the first girl that’s ever come into that grade – they always had boys come in – I was one of the first girls. I think they were mostly excited about that, the girls had another girl! It’s really great to have that. The schools in LA are used to having people in the industry.

Does Dakota help you in school? Do you fight?

We definitely do get in arguments – I guess every sister does. It’s a thing. You have to. She hates me when I wear her clothes, it’s the worst thing ever. We’re about the same size. I’m two inches taller than her – but I still can wear her clothes and she hates it!

When do you have time to have fun?

It was good because Somewhere was sort of filmed in the summer so I got to go to school all year. If I have any free time, I love ballet, normally if I’m not doing a movie I’d go 5 days a week ballet lessons. I love staying busy. For a while, I wasn’t really doing much and now everything’s happening.

What’s Next:

In February, we haven’t really started it yet, it’s called We Bought A Zoo with Cameron Crowe. They are all Super 8 kind of things – it’s based on a true story. There’s going to be a lot of animals in it. I think in January we start doing the rehearsal with the animals because they have to get to know us. Like, tigers and lions and flamingos and stuff.

Check out Elle Fanning in Somewhere this Friday, December 24th in theaters!

Last week we learned that Cameron Crowe had finally found a leading lady for his upcoming film, We Bought a Zoo. The film currently stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Hayden Church, who will now be joined by Elle Fanning and Patrick Fugit — as in Almost Famous’ Patrick Fugit. It’s like a reunion over here!

The film is based on the memoir of the same name by Benjamin Mee and centers on how his family used their life savings to buy a dilapidated zoo and filled it with 200 exotic animals facing destruction on the English countryside. Mee along with his children had to balance caring for his wife, who was dying of brain cancer, while dealing with escaped tigers, raising endangered animals, working with an eclectic skeleton crew and readying the zoo for a reopening.

According to Deadline, “Fanning will play the role of Lily, a 13-year old who works at the zoo’s restaurant. Too young to legally be working, she gets paid under the table and lives on the property.” Her character will also have a flirtatious relationship with the son of Damon’s character who’s currently being cast. Colin Ford has been circling the role. Fugit’s involvement in the film is being kept under lock and key. No one will reveal what role he’ll play.

What do you think of the growing cast of We Bought a Zoo?

This week, ScreenCrave was given the opportunity to see a sneak peek of the upcoming holiday film, The Nutcracker in 3D. Based off of the popular Christmas ballet of the same name, the film is directed by Andrey Konchalovskiy and stars Elle Fanning, Charlie Rowe, Nathan Lane, and John Turturro. We watched an exclusive 30 minutes of the film that featured plenty of dazzling special effects, larger than life costumes, and wondrous music. Here’s what we saw…

We were told ahead of time that the footage we were about to see was 2 weeks away from the final print. Therefore, a few technical glitches might arise during the screening. With that in mind we sat back, relaxed, and watched one of the opening sequences that featured Uncle Albert (Lane), Mary (Fanning), and her brother Max (Aaron Michael Drozin). The trio entered the living room where Mary noticed that her favorite doll, The Nutcracker was broken. She was enraged to discover that it was damaged by Max, and the two began to argue.

To keep the siblings from fighting Uncle Albert broke out into a song called, “It’s all relative.” Distracted, Mary and Max began to sing along and made their way upstairs where Albert tucked them into their beds. Mary asked her Uncle if he could tuck them in every night and instead of giving her a legitimate answer he just looked at her lovingly and disappeared into thin air. At this point Mary got up and grabbed her broken Nutcracker doll, and while she attempted to fix it, it began talking to her!

Once the wooden toy learns that Mary’s faith in him is greater than any he’s ever known he realizes that she can help him on his journey. The Nutcracker, or as he likes to be called “N.C.” goes down to the living room where the Christmas tree, and a doll house have grown to epic proportions and all the toys have been brought to life.

Out of everything shown in this sneak peek, the Christmas tree was the most impressive. It had so many layers, so many characters, and so many nooks and crannies to investigate. There’s one scene in particular that really stood out amongst all the others and it featured Mary and N.C. traveling through the tree with all the ornaments coming to life. The amount of detail that went into that shot was amazing.

Overall, we’re looking forward to seeing the finished product after all the kinks have been worked out. The only downside was that the 3D wasn’t as visible as we wanted it to be. But like they said in the beginning, this wasn’t a finished cut. When they do finalize the effects the scenes will definitely pop a lot better and be more visually interesting.

The Nutcracker in 3D opens in theaters everywhere on November 24th.

Yesterday we posted some set photos from JJ Abrams highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Super 8. The film’s story is set in the sleepy town of Lillian, Ohio and the cast will include “Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning. Today, the main cast of the film has been revealed and the majority of them are unknowns. Therefore, Super 8 could be the project that catapults these actor’s careers into the stratosphere.

According to THR, Chandler and Fanning will be joined by Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, and Zach Mills. We recognize two out of these 7 names. Eldard used to star on “ER,” and has appeared in several films including Deep Impact, Black Hawn Down, and House of Sand and Fog. The other recognizable actor is Gabriel Basso, who currently stars on the Showtime series, “The Big C.”

The premise for Super 8 is rumored to surround a “top secret” package that’s transported from Nevada’s Area 51 to another location. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make it to its destination, and lands in the unexpecting town of Lillian, which puts the local residents in a whole heap of trouble.

What do you think of the cast for Super 8?

The first trailer has been released for the big screen adaptation, The Nutcracker 3D. It’s based on the story that inspired acclaimed Russian composer Piotr Tchaikovsky to create his iconic ballet, and the film includes plenty of new music and choreography that will only further emphasize the legend. Check out the trailer…

Official Synopsis:

The Nutcracker 3D centers on nine-year-old Mary (Elle Fanning) whose dull Viennese Christmas is suddenly filled with excitement and adventure following the arrival of her beloved Uncle Albert (Nathan Lane) and his gift of an enchanted nutcracker.

On Christmas night, Mary’s new friend, The Nutcracker (Charlie Rowe) or “NC,” comes to life and takes her on a wondrous journey into his magical world of fairies, sugarplums, and other Christmas toys which come to life. Mary soon realizes that this fantastical kingdom is facing danger from the tyrannical rule of the evil Rat King (John Turturro) and his devious mother (Frances de la Tour). When NC is taken hostage, Mary and her newfound toy friends must uncover the secret of the Rat King to rescue NC and his kingdom.

Even though the idea of another 3D movie annoys the hell out of me, it looks like it will actually work for this film. The mixture of CGI and live action, with the dances and the music could be a visual treat. Fanning was perfectly cast as the lead, and Turtorro is almost unrecognizable in his costume. It will be interesting to see him in something like this.

The Nutcracker 3D is scheduled to hit theaters on November 24th.

Sofia Coppola’s latest film Somewhere is one of the many features playing at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The movie stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning as an unconventional father-daughter team who after a while apart are reunited — in a Hollywood hotel. The film chronicles their relationship and the effect the child has on her father’s playboy lifestyle. Here’s what the critics are saying…

The Premise

Somewhere is a precisely-observed, often silent portrait of a depressed movie star who sits and stares blankly at the wall, beer and meds at hand, when his publicist or manager isn’t telling him where to go or what to do. Marco knows how to be a movie star, he just doesn’t know how to live a life. [TOH]

The Acting:

It’s an appropriately distanced introduction to a man who doesn’t let much in, and Dorff underplays it beautifully, but both character and actor are unlocked when Johnny’s 11 year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) enters proceedings, and their warm, supple chemistry becomes the film’s dominant motor…Both actors are a delight: it’s higher praise than some might think to declare this Dorff’s finest hour, but it’s nonetheless a watershed performance that reflects on his established screen persona while adding softer accents. Fanning, meanwhile, is a quietly rewarding screen presence, perceptive rather than precocious, and possessed of one of the most deliciously subtle death-glares in the business. [In Contention]

The Direction:

Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere is a quiet heartbreaker. Trading Lost in Translation’s Tokyo hotel for Beverly Hills’ Chateau Marmont, the ever-perceptive writer-director further hones her gifts for ruefully funny observation and understated melancholy with this low-key portrait of a burned-out screen actor. Steeped in morning-after regret and centered around a strong performance by Stephen Dorff, the result is sure to frustrate those who require their plots thick and their emotions underlined. [Variety]

Overall:

All of Coppola’s films to date have, to lesser and greater degrees, been focused on children of privilege (Marie Antoinette being the ne plus ultra), and some audiences may struggle with finding sympathy for Johnny and his zombiefied state of spoil-brat ennui. But if you roll with it, Somewhere is a rich and sophisticated film that draws its world so deftly it’s easy to forget it isn’t ours. [Empire]

Stay tuned for more Venice Film Festival updates!

The first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s latest film Somewhere has been released and it might bring a tear to your eye. It has the right music and the right tone and is completely endearing. It was written and directed by Coppola and stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning as a unconventional father-daughter duo…

Dorff stars as a Hollywood bad boy and A-list actor who submerges himself in a wild lifestyle that includes frequent visits to the famous Chateau Marmont. His life is forever changed when his 11 year old daughter unexpectedly pops into his life. Her presence forces him to rearrange his priorities and try to part with his outlandish ways.

This film falls in line with Coppola’s previous feature Lost in Translation, which earned her an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. This character driven story looks like it could definitely follow its award winning predecessor.

The film also features music from Phoenix, which fits perfectly with its overall aesthetic. Besides Dorff and Fanning the cast also includes Michelle Monaghan and Benicio del Toro.

Somewhere is scheduled to hit theaters this holiday season on December 22, 2010.

Academy Award winning screenwriter/director Sofia Coppola is back after a three year hiatus. Her last film was 2006′s Marie Antoinette, which starred Kirsten Dunst in the title role. The film received mixed reviews and wasn’t as revered as her previous effort Lost in Translation. Either way she’s at it again and this time she’s taking two actors, Somewhere.

According to RopeofSilicon, Coppola’s next feature is entitled Somewhere and she’s already cast the two leads. Former child actor Stephen Dorff, who in my opinion is very talented but has his moments, will star as a Hollywood bad-boy. He’s an actor who submerges himself in a wild lifestyle that includes frequent visits to the famed Chateau Marmont. He will be joined by Elle Fanning who will portray his 11 year old daughter who unexpectedly pops into his life. Her presence will be force him to rearrange his priorities and try to part with his outlandish ways.

I’m a huge fan of Sofia Coppola. I think she has some great directorial and screenwriting skills, so I’m glad to see her back. I’m also happy to see Dorff in a role that hits close to home, but carries some substance. This movie sounds like it has potential.

What do you think of Coppola’s latest project?
