Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy Teaser Trailer

Jeremy Renner stars in the spin-off/reboot of the Bourne franchise The Bourne Legacy, and now we’re getting a look at how director Tony Gilroy is handling the reset button in the film’s first trailer. With that title it means that Matt Damon‘s Jason Bourne is going to hover over the film – though it’s hard to say for how long of the running time. Check out the teaser…

They brought back Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, David Strathairn and Albert Finney from the last couple movies, and upped their game by adding Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton into the mix, with up and comer Oscar Isaac also joining the ranks. You’re going to be seeing a lot of Isaac soon. Currently a chameleon, he appeared in Sucker Punch and Drive, and is the lead in the latest Coen Brothers movie.

I like the teaser, though I wonder how long we’re going to have to spend watching the franchise get rebooted. The trailer tells us that Renner’s character is a lot like Bourne but better. The problem is that every single film in the franchise pointed out that Bourne wasn’t the only super awesome agent, so I don’t know how long you have to explain that. As long as the action delivers and we don’t have to spend an hour being told all the same things over again, we’re on board. The film opens August 3, and here’s the poster art:

Bruce Willis and Edward Norton in the Moonrise Kingdom Trailer

At this point, it’s easy to know what to expect from Wes Anderson. Great Performers, a distinct visual style, and maybe just maybe some twee. In Moonrise Kingdom there’s Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman in a story about two star-crossed child lovers who escape from a summer camp, which leads to a full scale rescue mission. The film opens May 25, and now there’s a trailer.

With that release date, it suggests the film is going to Cannes, which is no surprise. And with Wes Anderson you’re dealing with a very distinct visual approach, so much so that watching the trailer you get a real sense of what it is. But now there’s at least some new players to the team, and it will be interesting to see how Willis and Norton work in the Anderson universe.

I like Wes Anderson, but at this point he doesn’t seem to have many screwballs left in his pitching arm. He makes the sort of movies he makes, and they’ve come to have a very narrow set of themes and ideas. From the trailer you can see that he’s doing things that are very similar to everything he’s done before for better or worse. Granted, I don’t think he’d do well within the studio system, nor would the world be better with him helming tentpoles, but it’s a curious career full charm and repetition. We’ll know how this one turns out in May.

Edward Norton to Menace The Bourne Legacy?

Edward Norton‘s had a rocky path in Hollywood, partly by his own making. Known for tinkering with scripts, he’s done films out of contractual obligation, and never courted an easy path. And yet Hollywood keeps coming back, perhaps because he is rather talented. Perhaps he’s finally made peace with working within the industry, because he’s the leading contender for the role of the villain in Tony Gilroy‘s upcoming Bourne reboot The Bourne Legacy, according to Variety.

Norton had a period where his “passionate actor” sensibilities were embraced by Hollywood, and he was nominated for an Oscar in American History X. But over the last decade he’s mostly worked on the sides of the industry, with The Incredible Hulk a rare attempt at something really commercial. That he was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers suggests that didn’t go over as well as anyone hoped.

A bad guy turn is definitely in his wheelhouse, as his big break was in Primal Fear where he played a character with hidden motives, but his role in The Italian Job was noted by many as something he did solely out of a contractual obligation. Something that his performance also suggested. Of course he’s just in negotiations, which means that this might not come to pass. Regardless, with Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz already attached, the production is looking for some of the best actors around.

Wes Anderson’s New Movie Attracts Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and More!

Wes Anderson is busy wrangling together the cast for his next movie entitled Moon Rise Kingdom. In typical Anderson fashion, it will feature the usual suspects such as Bill Murray, and a few new faces. According to Deadline, several big name actors are circling the project including Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, and Bruce Willis, yes we said Bruce Willis!

Moon Rise Kingdom is a period piece set in the 1960s that centers on two young adults who fall in love and run away together. Their town leaders assume the worse, and conduct a thorough search that involves the sheriff (Willis), a boy scout leader (Norton), and the parents of the missing girl (McDormand and Murray). Just to spice things up, Willis’ character is also in the midst of an affair with McDormand, who’s married to Murray.

Edward Norton playing a scout leader? Count us in! Swinton’s role hasn’t been revealed but we’re sure she’ll play something equally of the wall like the rest of her co-stars. The script for Moon Rise Kingdom was written by Anderson and Roman Coppola. Shooting is scheduled to begin next spring with Anderson directing.

Stone: Movie Review

Stone hits theaters with a thump. This is a film packed to the brim with ideas and a lot of potential. The fact that you have Robert De Niro and Edward Norton facing off in some pretty intense scenes definitely helps the film as a whole. Sadly it lacks any grand significance in the end that you’ll be craving after going through such an intense experience — but then again, that might just be the point, you don’t always get what you want.

The Plot:

A convicted arsonist looks to manipulate a parole officer into a plan to secure his parole by placing his beautiful wife in the lawman’s path.

The Good:

Ideas: Despite the fact that the film never fully achieved what it was capable of, there were some great ideas in it that really make you pay attention and draw you in. This wasn’t something that was thrown together, rather something that someone set out to accomplish and in that sense it succeeds.
Acting: Overall no one is winning any awards for this but it was nice to see De Niro in such a dramatic-twisted role, Norton transforms himself for the movie and in the movie, Conroy who has the type of face that tells you everything without saying anything and Jovovich, who is hot — and she puts in a good hot-crazy girl performance – though I think Blake Lively might have one upped her in The Town.

In-Between:

Repetition: Throughout the film, almost everything you see that matters you’ll see again in a different way. It’s a clever idea that they added in to make the film feel like there was more going on behind it… but the sad thing is it didn’t add up. Maybe if I was a Christian it would mean something, but all I saw was an attempt at a lot of symbols that never really went anywhere.
Control: There are a few times where you’ll wonder who is doing what to who and who is in control? Hopefully you’re not one who needs and answer because this film merely asks questions… LOTS of questions. Some of them are worth pondering, but not all.

The Bad:

Nothing was 100%: Everything felt like it was being slightly suggesting but never presented. There were so many symbols and ideas suggesting greater ideas, but nothing ever really added up to something substantial. All the symbolism needed to either be hidden deeper so that we had to discover it for ourselves or it had to be bigger and add up to something. Showing us things, without letting us find it and then having no great finale leaves you feeling jipped walking out of the theater.
Finale: After watching these characters go through so much there needed to be some kind of release. Some films can leave you pondering, some need to give you an answer — this film needed some kind of finale. All of these characters have a reason to put a gun in their mouth and pull the trigger and the actors to a good job at portraying that, so the story needed something to walk out of the theater with — unless that’s their message? And if so, it’s an interesting one, but not entirely pleasant.

Overall:

It kind of feels like the story let the film down even though it’s what built it up. The problem is there are a lot of good things here and this is a quality film, but it’s not an enjoyable one. The acting is worth seeing, if only for De Niro. Your call. It will leave you thinking, you just might not like the thoughts it leaves you with.

Rating: 6/10

New Stone Poster Featuring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton

John Curran, the writer of The Killer Inside Me, and the director of The Painted Veil and We Don’t Live Here Anymore, bring us yet another tricky film to contemplate, Stone. The project was written by Angus McLachlan and directed by himself. We first saw a trailer for this film back in September ’09 (which we had to take down) and as of this summer they’ve updated their trailer and have finally been pushing the film for release.

Though the story seems to be the usual crime twist with Robert De Niro and Edward Norton, but once you add in Milla Jovovich’s character everything’s up in the air. If there’s one thing that’s for sure it’s that Curran knows how to take his audience on both physical and mental journeys.

Robert De Niro and Edward Norton in Stone Trailer

Robert De Niro and Edward Norton reunite for the indie drama Stone, directed by John Curran. The Stone trailer debut today, and from the looks of it, the movie seems more like the story of a love-triangle with a crime twist. Movies with love-triangles are overrated, and sadly, it’s always the woman who’s called a whore, but when two men like De Niro and Norton are involved, all clichés go out the window, especially when the woman is Milla Jovavich. Check out the trailer…

Stone is the story of a correctional officer (De Niro) who’s seduced by the wife (Jovavich) of a convicted arsonist (Norton) up for parole.

De Niro is getting older, but his roles of portraying powerful men aren’t over just yet. From the trailer, it seems that De Niro will be playing the type of character he knows how to play well. Norton’s character looks like your typical white male criminal, especially with those corn-roles on his head (you’ll have to watch to know what I’m talking about).

Overall, the trailer gives a off good vibe for the movie, but a lot of it has to do with Jovavich who looks like a real bad-ass by being in the middle of two great actors. She’s the real star of the trailer. Check it out!

Edward Norton Official Statement Regarding Hulk, The Avengers

Early this morning we reported on the horrendous news that Edward Norton is no longer a part of the Marvel universe. The actor who took over the role of Bruce Banner aka The Hulk in 2008 was rumored to appear in the Marvel team up movie The Avengers in 2012 along with Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Don Cheadle as War Machine. Then it was announced by studio head Kevin Feige that the actor would NOT appear in the film and would be getting replaced.

After the huge backlash from fans yearning for a real answer behind this decision, Norton himself has sent out an official statement to let us know his feelings on the matter…

Here’s Norton’s reply via his Facebook Page:

I really can’t explain to you how much of a blow this is to the franchise. The actor took the high road with his response but there’s a part of me that wishes he would have went off. He was a pretty decent Bruce Banner, he was the last missing piece of The Avengers line up and most of us were hoping he’d return for the film.

At the moment, there’s a rumor going on that Feige will announce the full and confirmed line up for The Avengers at Comic-Con later this month that may or may not include Joaquin Phoenix as Norton’s replacement. Only time will tell how this plays out. To be continued…

Edward Norton Replaced in The Avengers – What the Hell?!

Update: Edward Norton has released an official statement regarding his recasting.

One of the biggest questions hovering over Marvel’s Avengers movie (besides Chris Evans ability to play a believable leader) was whether or not Edward Norton would return to play Bruce Banner aka The Hulk. According to several reports this weekend the character will appear in the film but the actor will not. The studio has dropped the ridiculously talented Norton like a hot potato and it looks like they’ve already got a replacement in mind.

Over at HitFix, they received confirmation via Marvel head Kevin Fiege and Norton’s rep Brian Swardstrom of WME regarding him leaving the project. First here’s what Feige had to say:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Norton’s people didn’t like the fact that Marvel was making it sound like he wasn’t a team player so they issued the following response via Swardstrom.

“This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at Comic-Con and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.”

He went on to call Feige’s comments mean-spirited and uncalled for. Despite what was said, he claims that Norton was looking forward to repring his role as Banner.

Can I just say this sucks? Throughout the entire Avengers process, Norton has consistently said he would be open to returning to the Marvel franchise and now all of a sudden he’s out? Something about this doesn’t seem right. If that wasn’t weird enough over at CHUD, they’re claiming that his replacement could be the “retired” actor-turned-rapper Joaquin Phoenix!

I don’t have anything against Phoenix, and to be completely honest he was one of my favorite actors before he went all coo-coo for cocoa puffs last year but could he be Bruce Banner? The site claims that an offer has already been sent out to the actor and they’re hoping to have an announcement of his involvement ready in time for this month’s Comic-Con.

The Avengers already had some questionable casting and now with the ousting of Norton, this film seems like it’s on some shaky ground.

Marvel plans on releasing The Avengers on May 5, 2012.

Edward Norton Doubles Up in Leaves of Grass Trailer

A while ago we brought you some info regarding Tim Blake Nelson‘s film, Leaves of Grass. It stars Edward Norton as twin brothers with the usual format of one being good and the other being bad. It’s not so much a story about good verses evil as it is straight-laced verses a free spirit. A trailer was recently released for the film and we get to see Norton get crazy country and Keri Russell wrestle with an alligator. Sound like good fun?

Leaves of Grass centers on “Bill Kincaid, an Ivy League classics professor, who “returns to rural Oklahoma to bury his dangerously brilliant identical twin brother, only to discover that the brother he believes to have been murdered has lured him home to involve him in a doomed plot against a local drug lord.” The cast also includes Oscar winners Susan Sarandon and Richard Dreyfuss in a couple of unconventional southern roles.

The film appeared at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival this year, and was written and directed by co-star Nelson. Norton and Nelson appeared opposite one another over a year ago in the comic book movie, The Incredible Hulk. Isn’t it nice to see them together again?

Edward Norton Teases Avengers Return

With someone as talented and respected as Edward Norton, I feel guilty that his name only brings one thing to mind, the Hulk. Ever since his appearance in last year’s The Incredible Hulk, the actor has been associated with the group of Marvel superheros known as The Avengers. This includes Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. With the other three heroes all set to appear in the team up movie, we have to know if Hulk is down for the cause.

MTV recently spoke to the actor about reprising the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the upcoming Avengers film. We’ve already posted a story about his possible appearance in Iron Man 2, which he adamantly denied, but according to Norton his future with the Avengers isn’t as certain.

“I get very busy. You have to deal with the demands of your moment,” he continued. “I tend to keep my head in the thing I’m doing and I don’t speculate or worry too much about what two or three blocks down the thing is going to be. I know all these things will reveal themselves and work themselves out.”

Even though it sounds as if he dodged the question he did bring up an interesting point.

“The thing about their universe that’s fun is that it all cross-pollinates,” said Norton. “Even when I was working on the ‘Incredible Hulk’ script, I tried to plug in the whole super-soldier serum thing from Captain America. There are limitless permutations.”

If Marvel really wanted to blow the other superhero competition out of the water they would incorporate two other members of the Avengers team who already have established audiences, I’m talking about Wolverine and Spider-Man. Both characters appear as members of the top secret crew on more than one occasion in the comics, but I’m not sure if the writers or the studio could create a decent crossover between the two. If it did happen wouldn’t it knock your socks off?

Edward Norton on Iron Man 2 Cameo

The majority of the general public has seen the first Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, and are familiar with the upcoming Avengers collaboration that Marvel is planning. When both films were released in the summer of 2008, Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark popped up in the last act of the Hulk. It looked as if he was recruiting Bruce Banner to join the Avengers, and now rumors have been suggesting that Edward Norton will make an appearance in Iron Man 2 and return the favor.

Over at MTV, they were able to ask Norton whether or not we can expect the Hulk to make a cameo appearance in next year’s Iron Man 2.

“I heard that. I don’t know where that’s coming from,” he said. “I am not in Iron Man 2 to my knowledge.”

That sounds like a clear cut no, but he hasn’t denied that he will pop up in the Avengers movie. He has remained very tight lipped about his involvement, so there’s still hope. Just because he doesn’t show up in Iron Man doesn’t mean he’s out completely. Tony Stark does have his own stuff going on, and the last time we checked Banner was somewhere in the mountains meditating and doing yoga.
