Maniac Cop—the b-movie, undead cop/slasher movie franchise so ridiculous that it managed to use the same tagline twice (“You Have The Right To Remain Silent…Forever!”)—has a devoted fanbase, thanks mostly to the b-movie gods behind it: all three films are directed by William Lustig (Maniac, Vigilante) and written by Larry Cohen (It’s Alive!, God Told Me To). And, apparently, a prominent member of that fanbase is Drive and Bronson director Nicholas Winding Refn, who has signed on to produce a prequel to the 1988 original film.

17 years since its debut, The Lion King is still a favorite with audiences. This weekend the Disney film was re-released in 3D and audiences were more than spend a little extra to see their favorite film, reworked. The new version topped the charts with an unexpected gross of $29.3 million – we predicted it would rule with $13 million. The thriller Contagion fell from the top spot to second, garnering $14.4 million. Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling‘s artsy R-rated action film Drive came in third place. Other new releases included Straw Dogs and I Don’t Know How She Does It, which finished in fifth and sixth behind The Help.

Can you feel the love tonight? After Contagion took the box office last weekend, you would think that September might have some moves. Normally a very slow month, this weekend proves how slow that is if The Lion King (in 3-D) manages to trump everything else. Then again, the hottest of the new titles is Drive - the Cannes Best director winner – that has also managed to get a little backlash. Those not as impressed note that the film doesn’t cure cancer. Surely that means that cancer is cured by the other films opening this weekend, I Don’t Know How She Does It and Straw Dogs. If so, expect their numbers to sure.

Get ready for Drive. The modern 80′s-esq, dramatic, action film about a driver who knows how to do one thing damn well. From the unique characters, to the stellar performances across the board, this risky film sets its unique tone from the start and carries it through to the bitter end. With its risky style of shooting, to the willfully strong perspective of the director, this film is one to see and one that will surely win awards in the coming months. There’s no doubt that this is your best pick for the weekend, possibly the year…

Trailers are a great way for films to find an audience, especially when those films don’t have massive, multi-million-dollar campaigns backing them up. There were so many good, smaller trailers released last week, that we had trouble keeping up. So despite the fact that these are a bit delayed, we just had to get the previews for The Woman, Apollo 18, Blackthorn, Father of Invention and a new clip from the much-anticipated thriller Drive up for you because we’re just so damn excited. Most of these films made their debuts at film festivals, and are finally getting released to the public later this year. Check out the new trailers below…

Yesterday, ScreenCrave had the pleasure of being able to sit down with the bold and visionary director, Nicolas Winding Refn at this years Comic-Con while he was promoting his film Drive after sharing a panel with Guillermo del Toro and his film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. An odd combination when you think of the films, but not the filmmakers. Though Refn is far less likely to make a “crap in your paints” joke/comment, he and del Toro both thrive on originality and creating a world of their own for audiences to enjoy. Watch our interview with him below where we primarily talk to him about his film Drive, but also his up and coming collaborations with Ryan Gosling, including the possibility of Logan’s Run… Continue Reading

A couple weeks ago it was announced that Carey Mulligan was in negotiations to star in the action film Drive alongside Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston. At the time, the film was said to center on “a nameless Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a freelance getaway driver but ends up on the run with a contract on his head and an ex-con’s girlfriend.” I recently spoke to Mulligan about her part in the film and she elaborated more on her character and revealed that she’s not just playing “a girlfriend.”

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a faded memory for Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan. She was once a contender for the sought after role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s American adaptation of the book. She lost out to newcomer Rooney Mara, and is looking for other projects to occupy her time. According to THR, she’s in talks to star in a film called Drive opposite Ryan Gosling and “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston.
