Dolphin Tale leaped to No. 1 over the weekend, bringing down The Lion King. The family film made a humble return with $14.2 million, while The Lion King dropped to No. 3 with $11.1 million. Brad Pitt‘s Moneyball grabbed the No. 2 spot with $12.5 million. From the new releases on Friday, the cancer comedy 50/50 was the biggest hit. The Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen movie may be critically acclaimed, but it barely managed to place fourth with $8.8 million. The Christian drama Courageous beat-out the new Daniel Craig movie Dream House and Anna Faris‘ new romantic comedy What’s Your Number? Check out the numbers…

When the most anticipated movie of the weekend wasn’t reviewed for critics as is barely expected to crack ten million, yeah, we’re in the dog days. Dream House – which wasn’t screened for critics – could lead the pack of new films, and The Lion King looks to end its two week run at the top of the charts, which means we may see Dolphin Tale climb to the top slot. Or perhaps Moneyball, or… forget it Jake, it’s September.

Last weekend The Lion King dominated the box office. Blame a sleepy September for a reissue throttling the marketplace, and parents who were happy to take their kids to see a film they grew up on (how’s that for a circle of life?) The question with reissues is always if it’s going to behave like a special event and evaporate quickly, or if it plays like a normal kids film Surely Moneyball - the long-in-development picture now starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill - would rather not have to take on such big numbers with their smaller film. The same goes for Dolphin Tale, Killer Elite or Abduction. Continue Reading

Dolphin Tale hits theaters this weekend with a bit of a splash, though possibly a little too much splash and not enough rippling. The stories tells the remarkable tale about the true-to-life dolphin “Winter” who lost her tail in a a fisherman’s net and was saved by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, which was not only represented in the film, but where they actually show the film. In the triumphet story, not only does “Winter” re-learn how to swim, but she also helped pioneer new technologies for amputees and give hope to all of mankind. Her story is an inspiration for us all and her tale (pun intended) is one that easily tugs at ones heartstrings. The film seems like an easy sell, but despite its extremely positive message it’s not without its problems, the first of which is that they forgot the heart of the story.

This week in theaters, the heartwarming story of Winter, the dolphin with no tail and the two children who stood by her no matter what, comes to theaters with DolphinTale. The film boosts an impressive cast including big names like Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., and Ashley Judd, but undoubtedly the characters that will win you over (aside from Winter) are the adorably charming, child-acting duo, Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff. The actors come from completely different backgrounds, but they they both share a strong passion for acting, a love for Winter, and were able to speak about the film better than many of the adult actors I’ve spoken to. Find out what they had to say below…
