Neill Blomkamp is turning down offers left and right. The South African newcomer recently made a name for himself with his mid-budget sci-fi alien film District 9. Now, Blomkamp is being offered films with huge budgets, however, he’s not having it. In a recent interview with LA Times‘ Hero Complex writer Geoff Boucher, the Johannesburg native shared his ideas about big-budget filmmaking, the Hollywood Machine, and a possible sequel for District 9.

Now I know what you’re thinking — sequels ruin perfectly great movies and are unnecessary. Blomkamp is very aware of that, which is why he’s thinking of prequel as a sequel.

“The concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet. All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn’t mind messing around with it again. I’m open to it if the story works and there’s a reason to do it. And [Copley's character] Wikus is so funny to me, I’m very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond "District 9"] it’s more of a traditional film but if you go backward I’d be intrigued in that. I’m not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting.”

A prequel based on such an interesting character like Wikus does sound intriguing, but also tricky. On the other hand, seeing aliens come back a second time is completely overplayed by Michael Bay. Whatever Blomkamp decides to do, I trust him to do a good job; he has Peter Jackson by his side.

The interview is very honest and shows Blomkamp as a passionate filmmaker whose sole intention is to make a great film. After the success of District 9, I was certain that sooner or later the news would come that he had signed on to make a big-budget film for a huge picture, but that day has yet to come.

“I’ve been offered films – a lot of films, in fact – with seriously high budgets, and I’ve turned them all down. The reason is exactly what you said earlier: Once the budgets get bigger, you can’t do what you want as a director, unless you’re Peter Jackson or James Cameron. And even then, the pressure is still on the filmmaker. Even if the studio isn’t clamping down on you, all the pressure is on the director. And if you screw that up, the jeopardy situation is even worse. The way you don’t get yourself in that jeopardy situation is by making films that aren’t as risky financially. I just want to make films that have enough of a budget to pull off high-level imagery but also have a budget that is low enough that I can do what I want.”

Wow. Now that’s passion. Here’s a guy who really loves film. Blomkamp’s District 9 is proof that a big budget isn’t necessary to make an amazing movie (just like Michael Bay’s Transformers is proof that a big budget won’t make a great film). But what about A-list actors? Now that Blomkamp has proven himself as a good director, it will be easy to get someone like Will Smith or Angelina Jolie, right? Probably, but the director says, he’s not interested in that idea.

“I’m not particularly interested in working with movie stars. It depends on where you come from, I suppose. Why are you making films? The reason I want make films is because they convey ideas. I think some directors make films because they want to hang out with movie stars and be part of Hollywood. They want to be a star themselves. I’m not interested in that at all. I think the reason you use an actor is if they are right for the role. Most of the high-profile stars tend to be good actors. That’s probably what led to their fame. So if they are right for the movie, you can certainly use them. But I don’t want to, not at all. Stardom and Hollywood overpower the ideas and the film. That being said, it’s hard finding very good performers who aren’t well-known.”

Blomkamp was lucky enough to find a good enough actor, who wasn’t really an actor, for District 9 (Sharlto Copley), and the film still debuted at number one on opening weekend. According to Blomkamp, he doesn’t want “egos and personalities on the set that make it more difficult to make the film,” he wants the audience to focus on his story and the meaning of it. That is exactly why films should be watched (eye candy is not a priority, it shouldn’t be).

So what does the future hold for this passionate South African native? One thing is for sure, Blomkamp will stick with sci-fi for now because he’s into sociopolitical ideas. His next film is set 150 years into the future. Other than that, all we know is that Blomkamp will stick with his beliefs of using less money:

“You can do a lot for less now. It’s all about process, too. If go into it knowing what you want to accomplish, you can save money. If you go into it trying to figure out what you want, it’s going to cost a lot of money. The other aspect is trimming it down. It’s like a diet. Instead of 2,000 effects shots, you can probably do with 1,000. Those kinds of sacrifices are worth it if you get to make something that is not in any way generic.”

What do you think of Neill Blomkamp after this?

Following the suit of Oscar, the Producers Guild has expanded their nominee list to ten films this year, and that move has yielded a few surprises.

Sci-Fi crowd favorites Star Trek and District 9 found their way onto the Guild’s shortlist along with the requisite cadre of prestige pictures and critical darlings to round out the rest of the top ten. Notably absent from the list is Nine, whose Oscar hopes are fading fast.

Will Oscar follow the PGA’s lead and use its ten slots to throw in a few movies that audiences liked as well as critics? We’ll have to wait and see.

Check out all the nominees below. . .

Finally a number one film to be excited about. There is no doubt that many critics thought that District 9 was the best film of the summer, but it was yet to be seen if audiences would respond. Everything from the first time director (Neill Blomkamp) and never before seen star (Sharlto Copley) to the interesting marketing campaign with alien posters all over LA and NY, made this film worth watching, but not necessarily a guarantee. It wasn’t clear if they were going to be able to pull it off at the box office, but luckily, they were!

Check out this weekends numbers…

That’s right G.I. Joe, you slide down that top ten. You may have hid from critics for a short while, but you knew that your only chance at making your money in the states was by opening big your first weekend. Once word got out (and it has) it’s a slippery slop for you.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, seems to be a miss. It’s been a tough summer for comedies. Either they hit big (like The Hangover) or they fall on their faces (Land of the Lost, Year One). Looks like The Goods is closer to the latter.

What do you think of this weekends numbers?

This past weekend the little engine that could District 9, dominated the box office with a hefty 37 million dollars in box office receipts. The Neill Blomkamp directed and Peter Jackson produced flick has got critics and viewers in a tizzy over their need for more Prawns! In a typical Hollywood move, sequel talk has reared its ugly head and people are yearning for a possible District 10.

More on a sequel after the jump…

Even before District 9 hit theaters to become the success that it is, Blomkamp responded to rumors surrounding a possible follow up. In our second part of Neill Blomkamp interview he told us:

So what do you say to District 10?

N: Yeah, I will totally consider it as long as the public likes it.

Do you have any idea what you would do with it?

N: I have an inclination, but I haven’t thought about it enough. I just want to return to that world and work on it.

Over at SeattlePi, the director stated, “If the audience wanted another film, yeah, it would be super-cool to go into the backstory of the aliens.” That was just last Thursday, before the 30 million dollar film recouped it’s budget and then some. You know executives can’t let that type of success go.

If they were to make a sequel to the film, what type of stories could he further explore? What about Wilkus and his outcome? If they dug deep enough I’m sure they could find something. My main concern deals with greedy Hollywood types not knowing when to leave well enough alone. This film has been received with so much positivity. I’d hate to see District 10 compromise the reputation of it’s predecessor for the sake of money.

Do you think they should make a District 9 sequel or should they leave well enough alone?

After seeing the posters, the trailers, the image of an alien-like figure with its spaceship, the time has come; Neill Bloomkamp‘s District 9 comes out this week. The sci-fi thriller has been getting a lot of hype, let’s hope it delivers. On the complete opposite end of the movie spectrum, we have the romantic-drama The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams (you know you have a hit love story when McAdams plays the lead female role). And did anyone even know Ashton Kutcher had a movie coming out this week? Well, he does. It is comedy called Spread and it also stars Anne Heche. We probably didn’t know much about it, besides the trailer we showed you back in July, because it doesn’t seem like a movie worth knowing about, but I might be wrong.

Here are the movies coming out August 14th:

I love moments like this. Moments where you know something pretty amazing is about to happen… That things might actually change for the better. I am giddy for the rest of the world, and for you. At 12:00 a.m., on August 135h, District 9 a new film directed by Neill Blomkamp (watch interview part 1, part 2) produced by Peter Jackson, and starring Sharlto Copley (watch interview) is going to be unleashed upon unsuspecting moviegoers. And if you’re smart, you’ll have your ass in one of those seats and your shoes stuck to the ground from spilled Cherry Pepsi.

So here is goes…

A Word:

This is the first movie in years which I walked into almost completely oblivious to what I was about to see. Aside from a tiny portion of the first teaser for it, I stayed away from anything District 9. No trailers, sneak peaks, magazine articles, early reviews. Nada. Only a few bits od their viral marketing campaign in Los Angeles. Moments ago, I watched the trailers for the first time. While they don’t reveal a whole lot, they do reveal a couple moments that are spoiler-esque. Even with that, this film will blow your mind. Hopefully, Hollywood will watch and take a lesson from this film.

The Plot:

I don’t want to tell you anything about this movie or the plot. This is one of those times where you just have to go see the film ASAP. If you ignore my advice, I promise you that you will be hearing it from every person around you whether you want to or not. Am I hyping it up too much? Maybe. I don’t care. It will still rock your world. There are aliens. There are humans. It is not what you think it is. The less you know, the better. You really shouldn’t be reading this at all. You should be ordering your midnight tickets right now. Seriously. Hit command-T right now and start ordering.

The Good:

Neill Blomkamp: The visual effects master jumped into the director’s chair and has created something wonderfully fresh in District 9… I hope Hollywood is watching.

The Script: Terri Tatchell and Blomkamp’s screenplay is so masterfully crafted, it is hard to point out one thing that makes it remarkable. The characters they create and the journey they take you on will leave you begging for more by the end of the film.

The Acting: The lead, played by Sharlto Copley, is an unknown actor who arrives on the scene and takes the film to an entirely new level. I don’t know how any other actor could have done what he did in this film. It seems like I’m cheating on him when I try to imagine another actor in his role. Must… be… loyal…

Cinematography: A good portion of the film is shot in a documentary style. But not the annoying kind. The fluid kind that does not take away from the flow of the film. We weave in and out of “doc mode” and “film mode” so seamlessly, it could sneak out and take your car right in front of your eyes.

Action/Visual Effects: The film will test your patience. But that makes the nectar all the more tasty when you taste it.

The Bad:

Nothing: A bold statement, I know. I have let the film sink in for almost 24 hours, and I am still in awe of it. I honestly cannot think of something that did not work for me. Maybe in a week or so I will change my mind. But as of this writing, I can not find one thing that was bad.

Overall:

This seems unnecessary at this point, but here I go. This is the best Sci-Fi movie to come out in years. What they have done with $30 million is mind-boggling. I am not missing a zero there. They were able to create what, in my opinion, is the best movie of the year at 1/6 of the price of the crappiest film of the year (Hi, Transformers 2!). Hollywood, please, look at what can be done. Look at the possibilities. We could have six great movies for the price of one.

Tonight at 12:oo a.m. Tomorrow. This weekend. Whenever. Sit in a room full of people and watch this movie with them. Groan and cheer together with strangers. Let this bad boy make a ton of money. Get your feet sticky with spilt Cherry Coke. I’ll probably be the guy next to you who knocked my cup over in excitement.

Rating: 10/10

The film will be in theaters August 13th.

Editors Note: Due to this reviewers request, we will not place the trailer in the post. He is avid that you see the film, NOT the trailer

It’s time to put up or shut up. After what seems like a lifetime of marketing, the highly anticipated film District 9 will hit theaters this Friday. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. It’s led by a relatively unknown South African actor, and the same goes for it’s supporting cast. Does it live up to the hype? We’ve rounded up some early reviews for the film and we’ll let you decide.

Yay or nay on District 9? Find out after the jump…

How’s the film’s overall story?

What makes DISTRICT 9 such a great sci-fi film, is that it’s one of the few big, effects driven blockbusters to come out which is actually trying to say something substantial about humanity, and specifically, the nature of prejudice. This is no average alien invasion film, and it’s no coincidence that this is set in South Africa, which, up to about twenty years ago, was run under a strict apartheid government, where white supremacy was imposed through a racist regime, only being overturned in 1990. In many ways, this is a retelling of the apartheid struggle in South Africa only with aliens as the oppressed citizens. [Joblo]

In truth, the “story” of District 9 is the weakest element of the film. I walked out scratching my head over a number of plot points, including why the prawns were here in the first place and the origin of Van de Merwe’s disease. (Alien gasoline turns humans into prawns? Really?) And don’t get me started about the unsatisfying conclusion. That being said, to reject District 9 because of lapses of plot is to miss the bigger picture. [Creativeloafing]

There are loose ends to the plot, to be sure, and a story that doesn’t quite know when to call it quits. But Blomkamp’s visual sense – his blend of astonishing CG creatures with jiggly, verite cinematography, lends the film not just realism but real excitement. And that’s not to mention the poignant quality it earns by the end. [HollywoodandFine]

What about Neill Blomkamp’s direction?

Neill Blomkamp’s directorial debut is visually bold; eighty percent of the film is told through either recounted testimonials or on-foot ‘documentary camera crews’ following the action and relating it directly back to the audience. The other twenty percent follows more traditional methods of filmmaking – cutting away to private moments between key characters, away from the documentary crews. [IGN]

This is one intense, intelligent, well-crafted action movie – one that dazzles the eye with seamless special effects but also makes you think without preaching. Like the excellent “Moon” from earlier this summer, “District 9″ has the esthetic trappings of science fiction but it’s really more of a character drama, an examination of how a man responds when he’s forced to confront his identity during extraordinary circumstances. [Canadian Press]

In a time of Michael Bay, J.J. Abrams and other so-called “power directors,” it’s comforting to see a filmmaker who still does action sequences with both hands on the camera instead of a computer.[NationalPost]

What do critics think of leading man Sharlto Copley?

Wikus is portrayed with surprising sincerity by virtual unknown South African actor, Sharlto Copley. Copley is initially a little self-conscious on screen but seems to ease into the roll as the film progresses and his character is injected with a few interesting personality quirks and hurdles to overcome. As he evolves as a character, the more likeable and believable he becomes; less of a two-dimension office flack, if you will, and more of the leading man he needs to be in order to carry the weight of the narrative. [IGN]

You’ll come out of DISTRICT 9 stunned by Sharlto Copley. There’s only one other performance that I’ve seen this year that struck me as amazing as this one… and that’s Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa in Tarantino’s Basterds. But Christoph is an accomplished actor. Just not a high profile one. Sharlto is UNKNOWN, an amateur. Someone that had no dreams or aspirations to be in front of the camera, he wanted to be behind the camera. [AICN]

Most importantly, how are the aliens?

These creatures are deliberately made to appear disgusting: Located somewhere between insects and crustaceans on the evolutionary scale, the aliens have hard shell areas, extremely thin waists, sinewy joints and surprising strength. Humans, in their disgust, call them “prawns” because they are bottom-feeding scavengers who root around for food, especially cat food! [FilmJournal]

The reason the creatures look like the creatures is that Neill – as a former visual effects geek – he knew what surfaces and looks can be rendered by a computer that would look 100% perfectly real in the environments. As a result. The Prawns, as they’re called, look perfect. Not only that, but 98% of all the “Prawns” you see in this film… they were all accomplished through the performance capturing of a single performer. Again. Amazing. [AICN]

I know we already have a video interview with Neill Blomkamp for District 9 up on the site from Comic-Con. But like I said in that interview, I hadn’t seen the movie yet, after seeing the film I had a whole new list of questions. When I went to interview the star of the film Sharlto Copley (watch interview), in which he repeatedly said “that’s because of how amazing Neill is,” I was able to snag a couple of minutes with Neill again. Although he seemed eager to talk, his those around him seemed eager to leave after a long day.

Here is what he had to say in our mini-interview…

You walked that line between entertainment and politics in the film quite nicely, how did you keep from going too far in either direction?

Neill Blomkamp: I think those decisions happened way back at the beginning. When I started writing it with Terri, right at the beginning of 2007. There was no question that in the beginning I was making it a more serious film than it is now. It has too much of a sort of political standpoint, which I think is foolish for a first film and a first time director. When I figured out that it needed to be more satirical and take itself a little bit less seriously and have these important topics and for South Africa to be the background and become the fabric of the film, once I made that step, to write a satire, the whole thing started to fit together. I could put all of these things that I wanted; the idea of segregation, xenophobia, the South African industrial military complex, the South African mercenaries, the private militaries, all of that stuff can be there, but you don’t just hammer the audience with it.

Normally you want your leads to be these lovable guys that you can follow, but the non-humans, at all times, were much more lovable than any of the humans in the film, how did you come to that?

N: Well Sharlto’s kind of an asshole for most of it (laughs). Even in the end it becomes a debate as to like the redemption. The question is whether the fabric of his DNA has been altered, and he’s in fact just fighting for his own kind because that’s what his DNA is telling him to do. The structure of his brain is changing.

Sharlto said that because you two were such good friends that you guys had to create a space that it was okay to get angry with each other in…

N: Is he starting with his space crap again? He needed his space (laughs).

He was saying that you had set that up already, but that he surprised that you didn’t need that. What was it like working with one of your good friends that you have known for so long?

N: It was good. It was exactly what I expected it to be and what it needed to be, in this case he didn’t have any acting experience, but it was finding a person who could become this characters and could convince me and the entire audience that he is Wikus because there is a lot of improvisation. What it was was looking for someone who understands South Africa and who’s an incredibly good performer.

Was that not frightening to have a huge movie, resting on your shoulders, with Peter Jackson there and saying “naw we don’t need a script”?

N: Not at all; On one level, he delivers and on the other level, if he’s going slightly skew, it’s very easy to give him instruction and bring him back into what our script said, even though we didn’t have lines, we had our perimeters of the script, so that I could follow the overall story structure and make sure that he was not veering of too far.

I was in awe of the special effects. How did you go about that and did your background in special effects help?

N: There’s a lot of trickery that was used to make sure — I tried to give Image Engine, who pulled the aliens off, as much as a head start as I could. I tried to light them in the way that conducive to photo-real results and I tried to design the aliens so that they would achieve a photo-real state quicker. The only thing that worried me was if it could be done within the budget range, not that the result would be real.

So what do you say to District 10?

N: Yeah, I will totally consider it as long as the public likes it.

Do you have any idea what you would do with it?

N: I have an inclination, but I haven’t thought about it enough. I just want to return to that world and work on it.

Sadly, just as it was getting where I was hoping to go, they called it quits. But you can see for yourself why I’m so eager to see District 10 next weekend, August 14th in theatetrs.

District 9 star Sharlto Copley has quickly become a favorite of mine. The actor will be making his major film debut in the Neill Blomkamp, Peter Jackson collaboration, and is managing to stay completely humble and unlike his character in the film completely endearing. I previously interviewed him at Comic-Con this past weekend, which he happened to remember this second time around (when does that happen?)

The interview below starts where we left off, with him speaking about the last question that I asked him at Comic-Con about what it’s like to walk out onto the stage in front of 6,000+ fans and how nervous he was to do so. Copley also gives some insight into how he created the right work environment on the District 9 set, being that it was led by a director who also happened to be his close friend, what it was like working with Peter Jackson and a whole lot more.

Check out the interview below…
