Well, fans of musicals, Glee, and Dirty Dancing, today is your day. Everybody else? Well, you may want to duck and cover, as it turns out that not only is Dirty Dancing being remade by the director of all three High School Musical films, but it’s being scripted by a Glee writer/co-creator. Yes, High School Musical + Dirty Dancing + Glee = so much cinema cheese that even John Waters would find this a little too campy and gauche.

As you may or may not have heard, a Dirty Dancing remake is now on the way, to be directed by the dance choreographer from the first film. And, like you, most of the world seems to think this is pretty much the stupidest idea in the history of film, at least since the Footloose rehash was greenlit. However, the question burning within the hearts and minds of human beings across the globe is this: golly, heck, what does original Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey (a.k.a., the one in the movie who isn’t Patrick Swayze) think about a Dirty Dancing remake?

In 1987 Dirty Dancing was a phenomenon, and if Crazy, Stupid, Love. is to be believed, it has enough cultural relevance to still be parodied today with most people knowing the film’s big dance number. There was a late attempt to give it a semi-sequel in Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, but that came in 2004 with only a cameo by Patrick Swayze. The only thing left to do is remake it, and (as broken by Deadline Hollywood) Lionsgate has hired Kenny Ortega to direct it.

Why would they do such a thing? Have we learned nothing from the “awesomeness” that was Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights? Every remake can’t have that spark that occurred over 20 years ago. They say nobody puts Baby in a corner, but Lionsgate is about to do it again. According to Empire the studio is ready to follow in the steps of Footloose, and give Dirty Dancing another go.
