The first set photos from Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington’s latest film Safe House have hit the net. If you’ve been wondering where and when the movie would be filming, we’ve got some answers. Over on PopSugar, they’ve established that the actors have been lying low in South Africa. The shoot takes place in Capetown to be exact, where Reynolds looks like his usual self, but Washington appears to have been hit with the rough and ugly stick. What’s up with that? Check out the photos…

Safe House centers on the only surviving agent of an attack on a CIA safe house (Reynolds) as he tries to get a lethal prisoner (Washington) to a second safe house before being taken out by violent forces that want them both dead. Daniel Espinosa is directing the movie, which was written by David Guggenheim.

Reynolds beat out several of Hollywood’s most popular leading men to land the role of the agent in this film. Who wouldn’t want to go toe to toe with Washington? He’s officially acting with the best!

The cast currently includes Washington, Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Robert Patrick, Liam Cunningham, Tim Mcgraw Sam Shepard, and Ruben Blades.

Safe House is scheduled to hit theaters on February 10, 2012.

New DVD Releases: Unstoppable, Waiting for Superman, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger

You’d think with the Oscar race piquing movie interest and with nothing in the theaters other than Bieber and Sandler to satisfy that interest, studios would be filling the shelves with new DVDs to tide us over. Well, that didn’t really happen. In fact, the DVD coffers are just about bare beyond the Denzel Washington (literally) vehicle hitting shelves this week.

The Manchurian Candidate – Hatchet job of a remake which, once again, nobody saw.
Inside Man – The lone bright spot. Barely.
Deja Vu – A movie that caused Richard Roeper to say he expected Washington to turn to the camera at one point and say, “Do you believe any of this?”

Top Five Worst Athletes-Turned-Actors of All Time

Can you think of many athletes that can act (off the field of play)? Neither can I. I’ve attempted to compile the top five worst athlete-turned actors of all time. A few athletes earned the right to be on the list for multiple horrific performances. Note to pro athletes everywhere: stick to your day job – unless you are considering a career in politics of course.

5. Shaquille O’Neal

Why? Kazaam, Blue Chips

Shaq is one of the most lovable guys in the NBA, but the dude can’t act his way out of a paper bag. His performance in Kazaam was so horrific that it single handedly sunk the movie to IMDB’s worst-100 movie list of all time. While his performance in Blue Chips was a slight step up, let’s just say a junior high drama student could have done a better job.

4. OJ Simpson

Why? The Naked Gun Series, Multiple TV Movie performances

Talk about kicking a guy who is already down… I actually feel kind of bad for putting OJ on the list, but he deserves it. The Naked Gun Series is a testament to what a great actor the late Leslie Nielsen was – not just because of his deadpan humor, but because OJ was so bad as Nordberg. And his made for TV movies? I actually sat through one where he played a bus driver – I still want that hour and a half of my life back.

3. Howie Long

Why? Broken Arrow, Firestorm

Howie must have missed the memo that being himself doesn’t qualify as acting. Put a jersey on the guy in either movie, and you’d still think he’s in his playing days. Firestorm was virtually unwatchable, and his role as John Travolta’s “enforcer” on Firestorm was shockingly bad. Thankfully, Howie hasn’t been in anything since a guest role on “Malcolm in the Middle” 8 years back – hopefully Bryan Cranston rubbed off on him a bit.

2. Dwayne Johnson

Why? The Scorpion King, Faster, The Rundown

The Rock makes this list because technically his Wrestling career qualifies him as being a “professional” athlete. Every movie that “The Rock” does is a much worse version of an already-made movie. Faster is like Man on Fire without Denzel, The Rundown is a stolen plot from any number of “buddy criminal” movies and The Scorpion King has been done before too. The Rock’s muscles can’t make up for his inadequate acting ability.

1. Brett Favre

Why? There’s Something About Mary

Has any movie line been delivered worse than Favre’s “Mary I’ll always be true to you” (closely followed by “I’m in town to play the Dolphins you dumb-ass”)? Brett must have been concussed when he acted in Something About Mary – I can’t think of any other explanation for his performance. The depressing part to you aspiring actors out there – he probably got paid a lot of money. Favre should stick to acting like he’s going to retire every year.

Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington Compete for Second Place at Weekend Box Office

It’s no secret that there’s only one film that has a shot at claiming the top spot when this weekend’s box office report comes back. Hint: all your friends on Facebook are talking about it. Another hint: it’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Still, there’s always the number two spot to aim for, and even though it came in second last week, Unstoppable, the latest collaboration between Denzel Washington and Tony Scott, might still hold on to that place. It earned $23.5 million already, losing out to Megamind. It’s always tough to compete with an animated kids’ film. But with that in mind, all the kids this week will probably flock to the latest Harry Potter movie, leaving Megamind in the dust.

Then again, Russell Crowe has a new movie coming out that may threaten Unstoppable‘s place in the ranking. The Next Three Days has the added bonus of Elizabeth Banks in the cast to draw in the male viewers. Chris Pine, on the other hand, plays a major part in Unstoppable and he will surely catch the eye of many young women.

Whichever of those two that come out on top this weekend may have the reviews to thank. The Next Three Days hasn’t impressed the critics, whereas Unstoppable is being hailed as one of the most thrilling action movies in recent memory.

Our guess? With Harry Potter soaring above the competition, Unstoppable will grab the number two spot while curious viewers will place The Next Three Days in third. Megamind‘s target audience will be too distracted by the latest outing in their favorite franchise to pay any more attention to that movie; it will fall to fourth.

Unstoppable: Movie Review

Denzel Washington and Tony Scott join forces again for the fifth time to make an action film that lives up to its title. Unstoppable is the non-stop action ride you’re expecting from the duo, with all the explosions, chase scenes, sexy ladies made to appear as “regular” every day women, with one attractive, new-comer to pull in the young-bloods. I think there’s almost no doubt that this film will in fact be unstoppable at the box office.

That being said, does it live up to all the expectations? Find out now…

The Plot:

Unstoppable is the story about an old veteran train conductor (Washington) who’s about to become the victim of company lay offs due to cutbacks. Pine plays the newbie to the crew, who all the old guys hate because he’s been hired to take their jobs away. The pair are forced into a life or death situation when they have to divert a runaway train carrying a shipment of toxic chemicals headed straight towards them, schools, children, horses, cows, and anything else Scott could come up with for a train to destroy.

The Good:

Denzel: However silly a plot line may be or a character written – he has a way of bringing them to life and adding that charisma that always makes you like him despite what’s going on in the film.
Action Sequences: If there’s one thing Tony Scott knows how to do, it’s action – which is off for such a soft spoken Englishman. He does a great job at building tension and shooting action scenes in ways that we haven’t seen before.
The Pace: If there is one thing this film isn’t lacking it’s speed. From the moment it starts the film sets a fast pace keeps it going until after the credits finish. From the fast paced camera movements, to the real life speeding train, this film is literally a non-stop action-ride that won’t stop even if you want it to.

The Bad:

The Story: Why is it that they only ever try any solution once? Give it a few chances before you throw it out the window! In the end they wind up saving the day with the first idea they had but it takes them SOOOO long to finally do it. It doesn’t really make sense as to why they had to wait and why it takes a guy with a huge truck and a handle-bar mustache to pull it all off.
The Cliches: There was just one cliche after another, from the corporate guys playing golf to the hard-working older guy with a wife who has just died. There is nothing new in this film at all aside from the fact that this time they’re on a train instead of a subway car, a bus or in a car.
Substance: The actors did their best to bring a sense of heart to the characters they played, but it’s hard to see past the non-stop action, and manipulative, emotional setups to really engage with them and their experience.
No Real Danger: Because we’ve seen this film so many times before, despite the fact that they came up with some twists, there was nothing new about this film so from the moment we meet our characters we know they’re going to make it to the end and therefore never really worry about the dying in the 50 different ways Tony Scott has laid before them. Without them being fallible we can’t engage in their story.

Funny Side-Notes:

Watch for the badger that crosses the tracks right before the train hits the horse trailer. It not only shows how fast the train is really going, but it’s also something you can tell probably slipped into the shot my accident but is one of those perfect blunders. The badger gives one hell of a performance to boot.
In the scene when Chris Pine’s character appears to be getting pelleted by “rocks” they actually used sugar coated cereal which all the local deer would clean up nightly for the crew.

Overall:

So yes, this film did live up to expectations, it’s yet another Tony Scott action film through and through. It’s got one long chase seen from start to finish and that’s probably the best part about it. I noticed people around me enjoying the film far more than I, which leads me to wonder if this is just not the right film for me. If you like Tony Scott and all his past films and don’t feel like renting Domino, Days of Thunder, True Romance (probably his best film), Spy Game (not a bad one), or The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 you’ll probably love this — it’s exactly what you’ve some to love, nothing more and nothing less.

Last week we spoke with Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson and director Tony Scott about their upcoming, non-stop, action-thrill-ride, Unstoppable. This commences the fifth time that Washington and Scott have joined forces to create a movie together. It seems like as long as you have these two together, add a few explosions, a chase scene, a sexy lady (dressed to make her look like a “regular girl” – tip boys, Rosario Dawson will NEVER look average), and you are in fact unstoppable at the box office! Throw in a sexy new-comer and you’ve got it made.

Dialogue and lingo, was it all in the script or did actors do additional research?

Tony Scott: I like to give validation with the lingo, we put that in the script, sometimes we embellish it and sometimes we trim it back.

Rosario Dawson: I think that falls into the research category, I spent a lot of time talking to Marin Alexander who we had chosen to be the background person for Connie’s background. We drilled her, she was constantly talking to Tony, we’d go over the transcripts. A lot of time we’d ask her, “what does this mean?” so I knew what I was talking about…also the energy behind it. Is this important, is this not important? Because all of it, as technical as it sounds, sounds really huge – but she’d be like, that’s actually pretty simple, don’t emphasize that.

Tony, what was more challenging for you on this film – to shoot or edit?

Tony Scott: Shoot. I love the challenge. This is the biggest invention of my life. We did major stunts, it was a very dangerous movie to shoot. If you so happened to be looking the wrong way at the wrong time…my goal was to not be inhibited by “NO IDEA til 3:25” and then, you gotta watch it at the same time and don’t get in the way of the performance of the guys. But I think shooting in real life situation helps actors, because they’re competing against the noise and the wind and with that comes mistakes or things that shift and change.

Denzel, do you enjoy playing average guys?

Denzel Washington: Wasn’t that average of a guy. I don’t know what that means, so I don’t worry about that. There’s nothing average about someone who can control a 100 thousand ton machine, make it stop or risk his life to do it. I’m not the average guy. What they did was not average. I don’t look at it that way – like you put him in a slot before you start.

Chris was there anything interesting thing you learned from real workers?

Chris Pine: It was interesting and frightening when we went to the rail yard in LA, they said the most dangerous thing isn’t out on the track, it’s in the yard – Because the trains can be so quiet and seemingly innocuous, but of course they’re thousand ton beasts. I remember this one guy telling the story that this guy got surprised on the track, and the train was only going 3 or 4 miles per hour and pinned the guy. And they had to call the family out because the guy was still alive as he was pinned, they said their goodbyes, and the train separates from the guy, he passed away…I mean, that’s how dangerous these things are. Everyone we talked to had an experience, whether it was a conductor or engineer, with life and death stuff. People trying to cross the tracks, there’s no emergency stop button – a lot of people have experience traumatic events.

Denzel Washington: It was great to get to drive the train. Everything on them hurts. You know? You step, you hit your knee… It was dangerous all the time. I was always more nervous because Chris and I were looking forward, and you have all these guys n the platform going 50 mph, we could see what was coming – they couldn’t. It was just trippy. I couldn’t imagine making this movie on green screens.

Chris Pine: It’s a credit to Tony, really. Everything was practical. Not only were we on trains, on the tracks moving — we had 2 trains, one train that looked like the train, that one was chopped up so that cab could be circled by this 360 camera so we could run scenes over and over again and feel like we were driving the train and not be hindered, and run the scene. It was such a freedom and a liberty to be able to do that.

Was that really both of you running on the trains?

Chris Pine: I didn’t have a stunt man.

Denzel Washington: I had seven. I remember reading it way back and thinking why does the other guy get to jump on the train? I want to be that guy. And we kept working on the material and then I started thinking… I shouldn’t be the guy jumping – Chris should be! I see why he’s the guy! We had very experienced stuntmen, the guys that did Casino Royale…

Tony Scott: [Denzel] has a fear of heights. So we had him up at 25 ft on a 50 mph train, it wasn’t an easy task to get him up there. Chris was down there between the two trains, it’s actually sugar puffs, the potato flakes…what we want is a snow storm, and I thought we can’t have a snow storm this time of year. We re-created a rain storm with sugar puffs and potatoes.

What was the hardest scene to shoot?

Tony Scott: The scene when I’m dealing with performances, when I’m actually looking at the guys and hoping I’m covering them the right way. This is about two guys resolving their difference through the course of this journey – which is great. You’ve got the beast, you’ve got the guys coming to terms with who they are and their differences. It’s great in terms of the drama of these two different worlds.

Denzel you’ve worked with Tony five times, what is it about him that keeps you coming back and do you feel like you have a short-hand with one another now?

Denzel Washington: I learn and know that I cannot do what he does – what he does is make films. I’ve directed a couple of films but it’s got nothing to do with what he’s doing. I’ve learned so much from him. There’s obviously a short hand, he knows how I like to work, I know what he likes to do. He knows I like research, so he’s gonna have a ton of stuff long before we start…things like that.

There’s never been complacency –both of us are always reaching for something different, we never repeat ourselves. Every movie I do, every day I go to work I say how I look at this world and these characters in a different way. Denzel does the same – he reaches back inside of himself and finds a different aspect of his personality. Every character is very different.

Chris, you must be dealing with offers of a different scale after Star Trek, how are you choosing roles?

Chris Pine: I’ve been very blessed and it’s such a shock to me that I get to sit and have people ask questions and seem interested in who I am and what I do. To answer your question, it’s afforded me the luxury of choice, to cherry pick for I don’t know how long but I’m in a time right now where I can at least say yes and no to certain things. I think the guiding principle to me is working with people – is seizing the moment – working with people who I want to work it. That’s Tony, that’s Rosario, that’s Denzel…

Rosario, your character is under a lot of stress but handles it collectedly- can you talk about creating your character?

Rosario I think there was something really amazing that we had the opportunity to create with her. There’s a lot of clichés about a woman in a man’s world, about a woman with high power and how she should behave. We walked that line very well and were very clear about what we wanted Connie to come across as: someone very sensible and very capable. Not a woman in a man’s world, just the right woman for a very stressful situation.

Tony Scott: When she goes in the bathroom we see how she’s really feeling. That moment was carefully put in there. So you could actually access what was really going on – the rest of the time it was cool, calm, and collected.

Rosario Dawson: We had conversations [about how she was to expresses] the frustration of being in this control room miles away from where this action is and how you just wanted to show as calm and collected as she is if she could physically propel herself out a window and pull the lever on the train, she would. I think that was something we really played with to show how her levels of emotions were – it is a high stress situation, because she’s in charge. Your options disappear as the time goes by. You don’t have time to freak out, you have to do the next thing that’s going to save lives.

How much time did you spend with people you were playing?

Chris Pine: Yes, Terry and Jess came here and we went to the pig and whistle and had a couple beers, talked. It was great to get a sense of – their dynamic in real life, they were married together for a while in the sense that they were conductor and engineer together. They were the couple. What’s really interesting is that hierarchy in the train is very real – those guys that are old heads and have been around for a long time demand a certain level of respect. Just because the newbie’s gone to school and learned to do his job doesn’t mean he knows all the ins and outs of the job in practicality. They told the story of the newbie coming in and pressing his luck, trying to show the old guys how it was done…he was in for a world of hurt.

Now that we’ve all seen the trailer for Tony Scott’s newest feature, Unstoppable 20th Century Fox’s marketing department has unleashed the first poster. It features both headliners, Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as well as a lot of red and orange to catch your attention. Take a look into Pine’s steel blue eyes below…

The pair are forced into a life or death situation when they have to divert a runaway train carrying a shipment of toxic chemicals headed straight towards them, schools, children, horses, cows, or anything else Scott lays on the tracks for it to diminish.

The actor’s faces are surrounded by sparks, which are supposed to represent the result of braking on train tracks. How clever. This poster has an old school 80s buddy cop vibe even though this film doesn’t fit into the genre. There’s a 48 Hours/Lethal Weapon tone that’s catching my eye but other than that, meh.

Unstoppable is scheduled to hit theaters on November 12th.

Denzel Washington, Chris Pine in Unstoppable Trailer

The first trailer for Tony Scott and Denzel Washington’s umpteenth collaboration has been released and it’s called Man on Fire, we mean The Taking of Pelham 123, no we mean Unstoppable. Yes, it’s Unstoppable and it co-stars Chris Pine. It’s one of those movies where the older, more experienced character has to take the young buck under their wing to show them the way. And in this case, if Pine’s character doesn’t learn quickly he’ll end up dead. Take a look at the trailer…

The trailer for Unstoppable pretty much proves that Tony Scott has lost his mind. He can take a simple premise about two guys trying to stop a train crash and turn it into something ridiculously fantastical. Fantastical to a fault! We have 8 freight cars of hazardous chemicals plowing through a town with school children, farm animals, and buildings, and somehow Washington’s character is acting like this is a typical day on the job.

There’s also Rosario Dawson playing a tight under the collar agent trying to contain this runaway train but unfortunately she’s surrounded by idiots. This movie really makes small town people look bad. After watching this trailer, we’ve come to the conclusion that Unstoppable needs to be stopped.

The film rams into theaters on November 12th.

Denzel Washington to Play Bad Guy in Safe House

It’s been a long time coming but for his next film Denzel Washington wants to play — the bad guy. The last time he played a truly despicable character he won an Academy Award. Sure, he starred as a drug dealing king pin in American Gangster but that was more manipulative and calculating than evil. According to Deadline he wants to shed his goodie image with another character that will take him over to the dark side.

The film is entitled Safe House and will directed by Daniel Espinosa who previously helmed the acclaimed Snabba Cash. Safe House centers on “a young CIA agent who must transport a dangerous criminal to safety after both are attacked at a safe house.” Guess who’s going to play the criminal? Is Washington about to give us his best Hannibal Lecter routine? Whenever we think of a confined and dangerous criminal that character always comes to mind.

Insiders claim that Washington’s co-star in the upcoming Tony Scott film Unstoppable Chris Pine auditioned to play the young CIA agent but he didn’t land the part. We guess the studio or director have someone else in mind for the role. Here’s to hoping Washington grows out that beard again from Training Day. It could be his good luck charm.

Movie Releases: The Book of Eli, The Spy Next Door, The Last Station…

The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis, finally hits theaters this weekend, and centers on a wanderer fighting to protect a book that he believes can save mankind. Peter Jackson’s film, The Lovely Bones, will also hit theaters and even though its gotten mixed reviews, visually it’s a very interesting. Michael Hoffman‘s Leo Tolstoy biopic, The Last Station, starring Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, and Paul Giamatti, will make its debut in a limited amount of theaters and again this movie has received fairly mixed reviews, but has an amazing cast.

If you find yourself in or around New York, the indie flick Fish Tank should be playing. Apparently, the performances by the leads Katie Jarvis and Michael Fassbender, are both very good and worth your time. And for those of you in Los Angeles, the New Beverly Cinema has a film festival running from January 15th to the 21st. There are all sorts of films being shown, including Amadeus and City of the Walking Dead. Plus, director Stuart Gordon will be on hand to help kick off the festivities this Friday.

Denzel Washington, Will Smith in Uptown Saturday Night?

With the new year comes a new batch of development rumors regarding the latest happenings in Hollywood. This story centers on two powerhouse actors Denzel Washington and Will Smith, possibly joining forces for a remake of the Sidney Poitier flick, Uptown Saturday Night. Can you dig that?

According to Pajiba, they’ve got word from an inside source that two time Oscar winner Washington will partner with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in a remake of the buddy comedy that previously starred Poitier and Bill Cosby. That’s right people, Bill Cosby used to get down with his bad self back in the day before he got became Dr. Huxtable.

Back in 2002, Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment purchased the rights to remake Uptown Saturday Night with the intention of it being a star vehicle for the actor. Since then the project stayed in development hell until last month when Warner Bros. began to put the project back in motion.

The remake has been sent out for rewrites, but has yet to find someone to take on the task. Therefore this entire project might be up in the air in terms of if or when it will actually happen. If you’ve never seen the original film, it centers on two friends who meet up at a nightclub and get robbed for their wallets. They later discover that one of them had a winning lottery ticket and they spend the rest of the movie trying to find it.

The casting of Washington and Smith in this type of movie sounds like a less action oriented version of Rush Hour, but with better actors.

Allen and Albert Hughes latest film The Book of Eli, stars Denzel Washington in a way we’ve never seen him before. The film will debut in theaters on January 15th and features several veteran actors such as Gary Oldman, Jennifer Beals, and even Malcolm McDowell. The action sequences in the film are all performed by Washington without the help of excessive special effects or tricky editing. The following featurette shows you the preparation that went into those intricate scenes…

The Book of Eli centers on a man and his journey to protect a sacred book, which he believes can redeem the post apocalyptic society he lives in. While on his mission he must protect it from the many evil forces that want to use its power for selfish reasons. His main opposition comes in the form of Oldman and his group of followers who are willing to do anything and kill anyone to get the book.

This behind the scenes video includes interviews from the film’s directors as well as Washington and the award winning stunt choreographers. You see first hand the amount of technique and training that had to go into each fight scene, and most importantly how much of it Washington did himself. Not bad for a man who’s well into his fifties!
