In Gavin Hood‘s Wolverine film, a number of additional X-Men characters were introduced. The two most high profile were Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) and Gambit (played by Taylor Kitsch). At the time Kitsch was a TV star, while Reynolds was a movie star, albeit mostly in comedies. It seemed odd casting, until right around release rumors circulated that Deadpool would get his own spin-off movie. Deadline Hollywood is reporting it now has a director: Visual Effects Supervisor Tim Miller.

Reynolds was talking at WonderCon about how he sees Deadpool as an R-rated film. That would be a nice change of pace, as it’s been a while since there’s been an R-rated comic book hero. But where Blade proved that it could work, The Punisher hasn’t played well in its multiple adapations to the big screen.

Reynolds is working on turning The Green Lantern into a franchise (audience willing), so he’d be pulling double duty, though Chris Evans has set the precedent for that. That said, with different studios (Warner Brothers vs. 20th Century Fox) and different comic book companies (DC vs. Marvel), this could get sticky. But I don’t think they can make the movie without Reynolds if it’s to be a big budget affair.

That said, Reynolds was all but assuredly signed to a contract for a Deadpool spin-off when he agreed to do Wolverine. At the time his stock was much lower, but between The Proposal’s box office success and him being Green Lantern and all, Fox may want to make that movie whether he wants to or not. I believe something similar happened to Jennifer Garner with Elektra. That they’ve hired a visual effects person to be the director doesn’t inspire as much confidence as hiring – say – Darren Aronofsky might.

Do you think Deadpool with happen?

We’ve all but given up on Ryan Reynolds and his attempt to bring Deadpool back to the big screen. The actor has signed on for roles in major tentpoles from Green Lantern, to R.I.P.D., to Safe House, and while all of those are scheduled or done, Deadpool is still in waiting. Doesn’t that seem kind of strange considering he signed on to star in the film before any of these other projects came to be? Reynolds must have remembered his commitment because over at Empire he spoke about the mutilated character and how the film is still happening.

When asked about Deadpool‘s progress, Reynolds told the magazine that it’s “still in the works.” It’s hard to take that statement seriously when thinking of all the other movies the actor has in the pipeline. Even he admitted to doubts about the scheduling over everything. He said, “I’m not sure how logistically it works in terms of scheduling, but yeah, I want it to happen.”

When asked about the franchise clash between Deadpool and Green Lantern:

“Those two universes are completely different,” contends Reynolds. “Superhero movies are so pervasive in pop culture, I don’t look at the as superhero roles as much as just roles. They’re such different people. Deadpool is about a guy in a highly militarised shame spiral, Green Lantern is more universally themed.”

We like Deadpool more than the Green Lantern and it has nothing to do with our desire for the film. We have nothing against DC or the Lantern Corps, and Hal Jordan is fine, but Deadpool is better.

Do you think Deadpool will ever see the light of day?

Over the past year 20th Century Fox has been promising us a Deadpool spin-off. Yet, its development has been moving at the rate of frozen molasses, and star Ryan Reynolds‘ ever growing roster of movies isn’t helping. Even though the studio has treated the project like an unwanted step-child for months they’re still very protective of the project. According to THR, they have filed a lawsuit against a New York woman who’s accused of posting the Deadpool script online.

The woman in question is Patricia McIlvaine, a mother of two who has allegedly posted roughly 100 scripts from various TV shows and movies online. The studio claims that the postings “interfere and trade off of the costly and carefully designed creative processes that produce finished works ready for public consumption. They harm the fans who do not want their enjoyment of a movie or television show to be spoiled by knowing the story ahead of actually being able to watch it.”

Fox is looking for $15 million in compensation for the leak. On Max Adams’ website it was revealed how she was notified of the suit.

Two strangers knocked on her door and informed her, in front of her children, 20th Century Fox was suing her for 15 million dollars. Two hours later, after grilling her with questions for two solid hours, they left her stunned and crying in her living room staring at a business card that stated they were “private investigators.”

This was the first contact PJ had from 20th Century Fox regarding a Media Fire online script library she created — and was the day 20th Century Fox filed a law suit against PJ in federal court for fifteen million dollars.

Yipes! If we didn’t know any better we’d think the studio actually cared about the movie. Unfortunately, this is more about potential financial loss rather than spoilers. If a script leaks online you don’t have to read it. Plus, the studio still has to find the person who got the script to McIlvaine in the first place. Just like with the video leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, they’re going to have to look on the inside.

What do you think of Fox’s actions towards this woman?

The drama continues for 20th Century Fox and their attempt to bring the Marvel character Deadpool to the big screen. While we’re still awaiting confirmation from star Ryan Reynolds as to when he can fit the project into his busy schedule, the studio is making a move on the directing front. For the past few months Robert Rodriguez has been rumored to be their number one pick to helm the film, but according to a new report that honor might go to Adam Berg instead.

According to 24 Frames, Berg came out of nowhere to become Fox’s top choice for the director’s position. He’s a little known commercial and music video director from Sweden who’s caught the eye of the studio. He doesn’t have any feature film experience but he did helm an action packed short called Carousel, for Philips Electronics that won the prestigious Cannes Lions International Advertising prize.

If you’ve never seen Carousel, you can check it out below…

Not only do the producers want Berg on the film, but Reynolds does to. Therefore, he has the stamp of approval from all the major players involved. It’s only a matter of time before he’s given a final offer.

What do you think of Carousel? Do you think Berg is the right man for the job?

Here’s some NOT so shocking news: Ryan Reynolds is trapped between a rock and a hard place. The actor has been in high demand over the past year resulting in several movie deals, so many that some of them conflict with each other. Despite his persistence and dedication to the character Deadpool (a role he originated in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) it looks like he’ll have to choose between the “Merc with a Mouth” and the supernatural comic adaptation R.I.P.D.

When speaking to i09, during the press junket for his new film Buried. Reynolds spoke about the conflict he feels regarding both Deadpool and R.I.P.D. Only one of them can get made, but which will it be?

People sort of ask this question, like I have any say in the matter. They’re both movies I’m interested in, they’re both movies that are in fast-track development. But I never say I’m doing a movie until I break for lunch the first day. Because it’s such a crapshoot, this industry. Everything’s so fickle and so contingent on so many factors, aside from just an actor. And because it has an actor, and because these films have interested directors, it’s obviously likely that they’ll both get made. But I think it would be more likely that only one of them gets made with me.

Who’s really surprised by this revelation? If we had our way, Deadpool would have been filmed before Green Lantern but that didn’t happen. Instead DC Comics took Reynolds off his Marvel path and a project that seemed like such a sure thing has become the ugly stepchild that nobody wants. Where’s the justice?

What film should Reynolds take on Deadpool or R.I.P.D?

Lately, Ryan Reynolds has been ridiculously busy. He’s currently out promoting the indie thriller Buried, which will be followed by the comedy The Change-Up, then the drama Safe House, The Green Lantern sequel, and hopefully Deadpool. We’re not sure if everything will go in that order but according to the actor Deadpool is still a high priority for him and he’s still on board.

Reynolds recently sat down with Hero Complex, to ease some of our fears regarding the fate of the “Merc with a Mouth.” The last we heard, Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were handling the script and according to the actor he loves where their taking the story. Deadpool won’t be your average superhero movie.

“It goes in such a different direction than a superhero movie usually goes. It’s a nasty piece of work. It’s just based in so much emotional filth, completely. It’s like Barfly if it were a superhero movie. It sort of treads into the world of an emotionally damaged person. I always say that Deadpool is a guy in a highly militarized shame spiral…. It’s so different than the superhero movies to date, it departs so far from that.”

Reynolds is aware of the core Deadpool audience and wants to satisfy them but he also wants to give new fans something to enjoy as well.

“With Deadpool, early on you have to establish that moral flexibility. There’s a gamble to it — you’re going to lose a few people right at the beginning but you take the gamble and know that eventually you’re going to win them back. You won’t lose the hard-core fans of the character, they already know who he is. We have to play to a broader audience than that.”

Hearing Reynolds talk at length about this film has slightly renewed my faith in it. Prior to this interview it seemed as if everyone was treating the character like the red (and black) haired step-child of comic book movies. Here’s to hoping that they stay on top of it because it would be a shame if X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the first and last we saw of Deadpool.

What do you think of Reynolds’ thoughts on the character? Do you think they’ll ever make the Deadpool movie?

Update: Jonathan Liebesman has officially signed on to direct Clash of the Titans 2.

The folks over at Fox have more than one X-Men property in need of a director. They’re currently looking at David Slade and Darren Aronsofsky as possible helmers of Wolverine 2 and according to Deadline, they’ve still got their eye on Robert Rodriguez for Deadpool. Do you know who else is in the mix? Find out below…

Fox is still keeping hope alive for Deadpool even though the film’s lead has YET to find time in his busy schedule to shoot it. Ryan Reynolds‘ has several tentpole projects on the horizon and he just signed on for another opposite Denzel Washington, which makes it hard to nail down a production date for Deadpool. Rodriguez likes the script and wants to direct but he also has his own schedule to keep, which includes promoting Machete and directing Spy Kids 4. It looks like everyone involved wants to make the movie, they just have to find the time to do so.

Fox isn’t the only studio having franchise trouble. Warner Bros is still trying to work out a deal with Jonathan Liebesman to direct Clash of the Titans 2. According to sources, “they are far apart on money.” We knew shortly after the release of the first film that Louis Leterrier wouldn’t be returning for the sequel. He’s too busy meeting with producers regarding other big budget projects.

It sounds like time is the problem for Fox, and money is the issue for Warner Bros. When will they get it together?

Who do you think should direct the films? How should they work out their problems?

Who didn’t see this coming? After the news broke that Warner Bros. hired a writer to pen the sequel for their upcoming Green Lantern adaptation, people started to worry about how Deadpool would fit into Ryan Reynolds’ busy schedule. The man has more than his fair share of projects on the horizon including the live action adaptation of R.I.P.D. and Safe House with Denzel Washington. Where will he find the time to do all these films and Deadpool? Maybe he won’t.

Reynolds was just announced as a top candidate to co-star in Safe House a film that centers on “the only surviving agent of an attack on a CIA safe house (Reynolds) as he tries to get a lethal prisoner (Washington) to a second safe house before being taken out by violent forces that want them both dead.” Every actor under the sun tried to land the agent role including Sam Worthington, Shia Labeouf, and even Zac Efron. Yes, Zac Efron! The film will be directed by Snabba Cash helmer, Daniel Espinosa and produced by Universal.

According to Collider, Reynolds is also set to shoot The Change-Up with Jason Bateman this fall (October), and after that he’s expected to film R.I.P.D. in January (but it’s not definite). Following those two, The WB wants to begin filming the next Green Lantern shortly after the release of the first one, which opens on June 17th. In between all of this craziness Deadpool fits in where exactly?

The creator of the “Merc with a Mouth”, Rob Liefeld has noticed the lack of attention being given to his character and he’s openly voiced his frustration on Twitter.

“Warner Bros. just trying to protect their investment. They don’t want Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool AND Green Lantern. Interesting 2 watch.”

“Bottom line about Deadpool film is that if FOX doesn’t pull the DP film together with Ryan Reynolds between GL films-they should Hari Kari.”

“Ryan Reynolds is the new Will Smith, if FOX can’t maximize this window of opportunity with this star, this character, that script=MASSV FAIL.”

He’s 100% correct. Wasn’t Deadpool green lit with Reynolds in place before he took on the role as Green Lantern? What gives? Fox knew that Reynolds and that character were the only positive things to come of of X-Men Origins Wolverine and they didn’t immediately act on it. Now we have a situation where another studio has their star’s schedule on lock and they haven’t even hired a director yet. How is this going to work? Do they want this movie to happen?

The only piece of positivity we can hold onto is Reynolds’ personal love and admiration for the Deadpool character. He’s spoken about how much of a fan he is, and hopefully that passion is what’s going to keep him attached to the film because we have no idea if or when this movie’s going to get made.

Do you think Deadpool will ever get made?

Last June, we got word that Robert Rodriguez was offered the directing job for Fox’s upcoming Deadpool spin-off. The film will feature Ryan Reynolds reprising the role he originated in the visual tragedy that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. There’s been a new behind the scenes development that has Rodriguez inching closer to a deal with the studio according to a report from The LA Times’ 24 Frames.

After Reynolds decided to take on the title role in Warner Bros adaptation of Green Lantern, we weren’t sure if Deadpool would ever happen. But we’re seeing some signs of life with Rodriguez’s rumored involvement. 24 Frames’ sources claim that the director is in negotiations with Fox and “the sides need to agree on a number of key points, but it’s moved beyond the casual discussion stage and into the more substantive realm of deal points.”

The screenplay will be written by Zombieland’s Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and the film is scheduled to hit theaters in 2012. We need to get this show on the road because Rodriguez is currently working on Spy Kids 4 and is said to be looking for a change of pace when the movie wraps. What screams change more than the “Merc with a Mouth”? Can we confirm this deal already?

Do you want to see Rodriguez direct Deadpool?

We’ve heard so much about X-Men First Class that people have forgotten about 20th Century Fox’s other little spin-off, Deadpool. It’s no secret that Deadpool was one of the only good things to come out of Wolverine, which is why the studio green lit a film shortly after its release. According to The Playlist via Production Weekly, the studio wants Robert Rodriguez to direct their adaptation of the “Merc with a mouth.”

Rodriguez has been busy over the past couple of years with his production of Machete and the upcoming release of Predators but he’s no stranger to Fox and their directing advances. He was previously courted to helm their Planet of the Apes sequel but passed on the offer. Perhaps a comic hero as enticing and kick-ass as Deadpool might be enough to suck him into the X-Men world.

We were wondering when (any) news would surface regarding the Deadpool character because after Ryan Reynolds flipped him the bird for Green Lantern we were a little worried. At least now we know the studio is still moving forward and trying to develop the project. No official confirmation regarding Rodriguez’ involvement has been made but we’ll keep an eye on it and let you know when something breaks.

Do you think Robert Rodriguez should direct Deadpool?

There hasn’t been a lot of movement on the Deadpool spin-off thanks to Ryan Reynold’s decision to concentrate on The Green Lantern. But that’s OK because the film needs time to develop its creative team and nail down a decent script. According to a recent post on Chud, the duo behind the comedy hit, Zombieland may be on board to give Wade Wilson his voice.

According to sources, Fox is looking to screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to get their Deadpool project off the ground. There hasn’t been a solid confirmation regarding this info, so the story is being considered as a “strong rumor.” But if everything goes according to plan, there might be an announcement in the trades fairly soon.

Hopefully this is true because if Zombieland‘s any indication of Reese and Wernick’s talent, they can definitely handle the comedic tone of the “merc with a mouth.” The biggest concern would be revamping Deadpool’s story after it was, for lack of a better word, mutilated in X-Men Origins Wolverine. It’s time to start from scratch with this character, which means picking up a comic book and staying away from board meetings. When will Fox learn that you can never go wrong with the source material?

Do you think Reese and Wernick would be good choices for the Deadpool movie?

X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been with the film franchise since its debut back in 2000, and Empire was lucky enough to land an interview with her to get the scoop on the future of the pending X-Men spin-offs. According to her, it seems like their focus is geared more towards the next Wolverine, and it will be a while before any of the others (Deadpool, X-Men: First Class, or Magneto) see production.

See what she had to say…

Wolverine 2

“We wanted an A+ writer, so we went to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing – he’s in Japan in his head!”

X-Men: First Class

“Cyclops, for example – he’s a tough kid that bobbed from foster home to foster home, until he ends up at the school and becomes the leader. There’s also still an element of friction between the mutants and the outside world. Remember that this will be set way back before anyone knew mutants existed.”

Deadpool:

“I want to ignore the version of Deadpool that we saw in Wolverine and just start over again. Reboot it. Because this guy talks, obviously, and to muzzle him would be insane. He is a bad ass, a wise-cracking mercenary, who will go out and kill anyone for money. It’s going to be a dark, snarky, very funny movie.”

On Ryan Reynolds: “I mean, look at Harrison Ford – he was in Star Wars and Indiana Jones at the same time and everyone was fine with that. Green Lantern could not be more different to Wade Wilson. Green Lantern is a guy who finds a ring and is thrust into this world, much like Spider-Man. Wade Wilson is a guy who unfortunately gets cancer, and volunteers for a test that will give him healing powers.”

Magneto:

“I’m not sure that film is going to be made. The studio has a wealth of potential stories, and they have to stand back and decide which ones to make. And Magneto, I think, is at the back of the queue. Maybe it’ll get made in five years – who knows?”

Which X-Men film are you most excited for?
