Hey, remember that horrible—just horrible—Daredevil film adaptation that was released a few years ago with Ben Affleck? No? Well, I promise you, it existed (though you may have just sealed your eyes shut to miss its face-melting horrors, Radars of the Lost Ark-style; I was not so lucky). Well guess what? The sequel that no one was clamoring for is now being written! Huzzah!

The Hollywood Report has it that David Slade, director of Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is set to direct, and that the film will follow the comic book series’ Born Again storyline, “which saw the Kingpin of Crime learn the identity of the superhero and begin to systematically destroy his life” and “is aiming to make a movie that continues the story begun by the 2003 Ben Affleck movie.”

The film is being made by 20th Century Fox and Regency. No writer has been selected at this point, but it is known that Ben Affleck will not be returning as the blind guy in red tights who beats people with his walking cane (funny, I know this elderly gentleman who lives on my block and does the same exact thing, but it’s just sad when he does it). So, there you go—truly, this will be the most anticipated unnecessary sequel to a horrible comic book adaption adaptation since Fantastic Four: Jessica Alba Wears Tight Things While We Run A Franchise Into The Ground With A Naked Silver Guy.

What do you think of a new Daredevil film?

A couple weeks ago David O. Russell decided not to direct the highly anticipated adaptation, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which left the job open for some of Hollywood’s most eager filmmakers. According to a report from The Wrap, some heavy hitters have made the directing shortlist including Oscar winner Jonathan Demme and Let Me In helmer Matt Reeves. Check out the rest of the candidates below…

Besides Demme and Reeves, sources claim that Mike White and the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are all up for the director’s job. There’s also Mike Newell, David Slade, and Neil Marshall who have been named as potentials according to a report from Deadline. They claim that Newell is currently the front runner of the group but he’s still meeting with the folks over at Lionsgate, so nothing has been finalized.

Out of this group, we’d love to see any one besides Newell direct this film. It’s nothing personal but Prince of Persia was ridiculously boring. There was a lot of exposition and not enough entertainment. This isn’t to undercut his talent as a director but it did leave a bit of a dark spot on his resume. If the studio does hire him for the job, we can only hope that he uses it as a way to redeem himself in the eyes of those who were disappointed by his last film.

Who do you think should direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

Earlier this week we reported that Hugh Jackman had dropped out of the upcoming film Avon Man (which he’ll also produce) to begin training for Wolverine 2. The film should begin production pretty soon but it still doesn’t have a director. The first installment of the X-Men Origins series was directed Gavin Hood, but he won’t be returning for the sequel. Instead, Fox has their eye on a new guy, David Slade.

According to Vulture, Slade is the first choice to helm Wolverine 2. He previously directed this summer’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and prior to that 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy. But he’s not the only one who has the studio’s attention. Another contender who’s running a close second with Slade is Robert Schwentke who helmed The Time Traveler’s Wife and Flightplan. Both of them have been given the stamp of approval by the powers that be so it’s just a matter of who they want more.

The screenplay for Wolverine 2 is being written by Christopher McQuarrie and will center on the Japanese samurai story from the comics. It will follow Logan as he engages in “a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man.” He doesn’t take no for an answer and ends up battling her “furious father and samurai-sword-wielding brothers.”

The Silver Samurai will probably be one of the main villains in this film. You can’t have Wolverine in Japan and not touch on the Samuari story. People would be highly pissed, even more than they were with the treatment of the characters in the first movie (Gambit, Deadpool).

Who do you think should direct Wolverine 2?

It looks like we’re going to get another big screen adaptation of The Shadow in our lifetime thanks to the people over at 20th Century Fox. According to Latino Review, the studio has picked up the rights to Sam Raimi’s version of the vintage character that Sony was previously rumored to produce, but after the Spider-Man debacle are we really surprised they didn’t follow through?

The last time most of us saw a live action version of The Shadow it was back in the nineties, with a film that starred Alec Baldwin. The slender, serious Alec Baldwin, not the “30 Rock” guy you see today. The Shadow was an old school pulp hero in every sense of the word. The character originated in 1931 on a CBS radio show, which aimed to boost the magazine circulation of sponsor Street & Smith. The character was actually the moniker for the announcer, and listeners began demanding stories based on the name.

According to sources, David Slade (30 Days of Night, The Twilght Saga: Eclipse) might be on board to direct the film instead of Raimi. The visual look of The Shadow definitely goes with Slade’s aesthetic so the film isn’t that much of a creative stretch for him. Raimi was long rumored to helm the project but he got swept up in the Spider-Man universe and never got around to it.

Do you think David Slade should direct The Shadow? Do you think the character can generate interest in this day and age?

The director of The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse, David Slade, is inserting his foot into his mouth at this very moment. Apparently when Twilight was released last year, David Slade made a comment, via Twitter, about his level of interest in the film. Slade said, “Twilight drunk? No, not even drunk. Twilight on acid? No, not even on acid? Twilight at gun point? Just shoot me.” I take it he didn’t really want to see it. Granted the hype surrounding the movie was completely out of control, and that can definitely turn some people off. BUT when you are later hired as the director of the sequel, this comment may come back and bite you in the ass, and it did.

Let the damage control begin.! In response to the tweet, Slade’s Twitter account has been deleted and he has issued a formal apology to all Twilight fans. He sent a letter to website Twilight Lexicon stating…

I would be grateful if you could distribute this statement to the fans of Twilight: I would like to address some statements that I made regarding Twilight.

When I made these comments, I had neither seen the film nor read the books. I was promoting a comedy short film that I had made for Xbox and every pop culture subject was seen as a possible comedy target. I was being silly and none of the statements were from the heart.

Of course, I have since seen the movie and read the books and was quickly consumed with the rich storytelling and the beautifully honest characters that Stephenie Meyer created.

I would like to reassure everyone involved that I am invested in making the best film that I am humanly capable of, and that I am acutely aware of the power of the original books we serve.

Please be rest assured this statement is absolutely from the heart.

yours sincerely

DAVID SLADE

I’m sure he really is sorry that he made the comment. But I don’t see how the tweet relates to promoting another film? This should be a lesson to all, do not make nasty remarks about anything via Twitter, or on the Internet in general. It can come back to haunt you. There are a few things those in the entertainment industry should not do, going too crazy with the Twitter accounts and naked pictures are examples. This is the equivalent of making fun of your boss in an e-mail, and then accidentally sending it to your boss. Oops.

What do you think? Do you really care? Will this impact your decision to see the sequel?
