David O. Russell, the hotheaded (but brilliant!) director behind such films as The Figher, I Heart Huckabees, and Three Kings, has, in each of those films, tackled such themes as perseverance and family, the meaning of live, and recognizing human dignity in the midst the horrors of war, respectively. And now, in tackling the story of Russ Meyer, he might just make a movie about a dirty old man who directs juggy exploitation films. Score!

According to Deadline, “Fox Searchlight is negotiating to acquire a pitch package for The Fighter helmer David O. Russell to direct a feature about Russ Meyer, the maker of exploitation B-movies like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Super Vixens.”

The film is set to be written by Merritt Johnson (Russell’s assistant on Three Kings), who previously penned HBO’s Temple Grandin and the upcoming Linda Lovelace/ Deep Throat biopic, and will be based upon Jimmy McDonough book, Big Bosoms And Square Jaws: The Biography Of Russ Meyer, King Of The Sex Film, which is about as charming as bios get, folks.

To break down the Meyer story, Deadline has it like this:

“Meyer began plying his trade in exploitation fare in the early 1960s, as the country was loosening up and the sexual revolution was getting under way. His trademark: placing buxom actresses in grindhouse fare that he wrote, directed, produced and even distributed. To say his casts were well rounded would be an understatement.”

Meyer died in 2004. Could 2011-2012 bring about his cinematic revival?

What do you think of a Russ Meyer film?

When The Fighter was making the junket rounds, Mark Wahlberg joked about how there could be a series of films made about his real-life character Micky Ward’s fights with Arturo Gatti. He said “We’re doing those fights in the sequel. We’ll do four more films. We’ll do the first Gatti fight in the sequel” which led to director David O. Russell making a Rocky IV reference. It turns out this wasn’t just a jab at the beloved Sylvester Stallone franchise – Mark Wahlberg has recently commented to Entertainment Weekly that he’s into “taking one more run at it.”

Everything is still in the early stages of development, but Wahlberg goes on to talk about he thinks he can get most of the rest of the cast back, and that the real Micky Ward and his brother Dickie Eklund (played to Oscar winning effect by Christian Bale) really want him to do it. And – perhaps more importantly – Wahlberg is trying to maintain his fighting shape.

The Fighter won two Oscars (for Bale and Melissa Leo), has made over $90 Million domestically, and comes out on DVD and Blu-ray today. The thought of a sequel isn’t all that shocking – the film was successful – the thing that will surely be the make or break the sequel is scheduling.

Wahlberg has a busy plate, and he’s currently set to join David O. Russell for his adaptation of the Uncharted video game. But where Russell is easily replaceable, Leo and Bale are not because of their Oscar wins. Right now Wahlberg is talking up the sequel and surely there are interested parties, but Wahlberg is also nearly forty years old. This isn’t a project that can be sat on.

Would you buy a ticket for The Fighter 2?

This weekend, Vince Vaughn will tickle your funny bone in his latest comedy The Dilemma (check out our review), which is great for now but the actor already has another project in the works. According to Variety, Vaughn has his eye on a comic adaptation called 2 Guns. The trade reports that he’s being tapped to star and David O. Russell is interested in writing and directing it.

If you’re not familiar with the comic, it’s probably because it only ran for five issues. From Boom! Studios it’s described as follows:

In the vein of Ocean’s Eleven and The Italian Job, Two Guns is a pulp story about cops and thieves and the men that are something in between. Trench has targeted a local bank to rob, and asked Steadman in on the job. Trench figures it’s a great way to score – considering it’s a cover for mob money. They’ll be thieves ripping off thieves. But what Steadman doesn’t know is that Trench is a DEA agent. And what Trench doesn’t know is that Steadman’s got his own secret and isn’t who he appears to be… Classic two gun safe-robbing action delivered with wit and charm from the writer-creator of Whisper!

Vince Vaughn in a comedic pulp story? Are we the only ones who remember his work as a dramatic actor? In the beginning of his career, he appeared in many dramas including 1998′s Psycho, but some people have forgotten that. It would be great to see if he can still carry that type of material, especially with Russell directing but it probably won’t happen. We’re sure they’ll amp up the “wit and charm” element they’ve described.

What do you think of Russell and Vaughn teaming up for 2 Guns?

While doing promotion for his acclaimed film The Fighter, actor Mark Wahlberg revealed that he’d been cast in the coveted role of Nathan Drake and would star in David O. Russell’s feature adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. This news came as a shock to the die hard fans of the video game who felt that Nathan Fillion, would have been a better choice. One follower in particular stood up for the little guys and went straight to the director with his concerns and here’s what Russell had to say…

Let’s give credit to where credit is due. This guy approached Russell in a calm and respectful way. He wasn’t star struck. He didn’t fumble over his words. He just stood there and pleaded his case for those of you who want to see Fillion in the role. For a minute it looks like the director was really interested in hearing what he had to say before being escorted off by his management.

We also want to say that this guy has guts because we all know that Russell doesn’t do well with any type of confrontation.

What do you think of Russell’s reaction to the fan? Do you think he’ll listen?

The country awaits with bated breath for this weekend’s Paramount Pictures release, The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale as Micky and Dicky Ward. Predicted to sweep awards season, the movie offers far more than your average boxing flick, and should please both commercial and critical audiences. We were fortunate enough to sit down with the film’s director, David O. Russell to get his two cents on what went into making this film.

Check out the interview below…

It’s been a long and rocky road for The Fighter. Now that it’s opening this weekend do you feel like you can breathe a sigh of relief?

David O. Russell: It’s a real blessing, I’m really happy to be here. I feel very lucky to be here with this much talent and this much raw material. As soon as I saw the raw material that Mark was talking to me about I just thought, “Oh my God this is amazing, this material is amazing.”

This is your third time collaborating with Mark…

DR: When I first met him he was a 26-year old kid mumbling off of Boogie Nights, mumbling in a hotel meeting. By the time we made this movie he was like, “Boardwalk Empire” builder. There’s nothing better than having a collaborator that you have a great short hand with and a great comfort with – shepherding the project along. That’s the best thing that you can have when there’s many cooks in the kitchen – it makes life much easier.

You, Mark and Christian worked very closely with the Ward family. What was that like?

DR: I didn’t know what to expect when I first saw the family. I thought they might be some very harsh people that I’d want to spend 10 minutes with. I remember hearing about Micky Ward and then when I saw him and heard him talk I thought he sounded much rougher than I expected. I expected some sweet talking Oscar De La Hoya type. The fact is, the people are so unbelievably lovable. That’s what goes into the movie.

Who’s more like their character, Mark or Christian?

DR: In a funny way, I think Christian is more like Micky and Mark is more like Dicky. In the talky-talk way. Christian’s more of a quiet guy, and it was interesting to watch him hang out with Dicky, inhale Dicky – people would come up on set and be, like, “Oh, I thought that was Dicky.” Micky never says two words, he’ll take five punches to give one, and he’ll let everybody say everything and he won’t say nothing. He’ll let Dicky to all the talking – it was an interesting role for each of these guys.

You’ve got an incredibly strong supporting cast, particularly Melissa Leo and Amy Adams. How did you make those casting choices? Specifically Amy, given that this is a very out-of-type role for her.

DR: I’d been speaking with Amy – we’d have lunch every couple of years and talk about working together, and I knew she was eager to break type for herself. In the sense that she’d played mostly very sunny women. And she was very eager to play someone against type – and I knew she was gonna kill it. Just from talking to her I knew she was going to step up. There’s nothing better a director can have than someone who is very eager . Actually, Mark recommended Melissa to me off of Frozen River. I haven’t seen it and thought she was phenomenal – I was very excited to transform her.

Can you talk about the different characteristics they had to pull off for their roles?

DR: Both of these women talk like dudes, my mother did too. They come from a very deep power place. The beautiful thing that they each brought to the part that really makes them succeed so beautifully is that Melissa consistently fought for the compassion for Alice. Melissa always said, we gotta love Alice. Alice made mistakes but loves all of her children. And I thought that was beautiful, likewise for Amy. Charlene is a tough bitch, and Amy is very fierce – she has that fierceness in her. But Amy also brings a great deal of emotion in her eyes. You have that great cocktail that I find so interesting.

What about the inspirations for each character. What did the actors pull from?

DR: Christian and I initially agreed that Dicky should be someone you love. Mark and I knew Micky was someone you love because he’s taking the heat the whole movie. It’s a question of how you can plug into Mark’s emotions, understanding why he put up with it, why he needed it, it’s the heart of the story. Why Micky wanted these powers that forced him into the championship – that’s the crucible that put him there. Charlene and the family and his brother. He got the discipline from the cop on his corner, and he got the inspiration from an older brother – you can’t get better inspiration than that.

These characters aren’t easy to tackle. They clearly required actors who were willing to put in the homework, and willing to “transform” themselves. Can you comment on that?

DR: One of the things that made this film so beautiful – when Mark said he’d do anything for the picture – everyone brought that to the film. That’s a rocket ship. Amy came and said she was ready to fight, and we were choreographing fight scenes in Whole Foods at 11 o’clock at night. Mark’s willing to fight and do anything it takes in the ring, do anything it takes emotionally, and Amy, Melissa – transformed themselves completely. There was just an unstoppable “I’ll go there.” Christian already had the weight off and was shaving the bald spot before we set foot into pre-production. That’s crazy willingness.

The film has a nationwide release Friday, December 10.

The magnitude of the five year development fiasco that preceded the green light for this weekend’s fanatically anticipated release, The Fighter (directed by David O. Russell), seems unparalleled. Based on the life and career of the legendary “Irish” Micky Ward, played by Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter offers far more than your average boxing flick. For those of you looking to get your “Rocky” on, fear not, the fight scenes are plentiful. But in addition to upper cuts and toothless mongrels comes an unexpected level of heart and thematic poignance. We recently had the opportunity to speak with the film’s leading men to discuss their involvement in picture…

The film chronicles Micky and his half-brother, Dicky (Christian Bale), ex-boxer/current coke head, and how their relationship shapes both Mickey’s personal life and athletic career. It’s fair to credit much of the picture’s success to its most fervent adherent, Mr. Wahlberg, who relentlessly battled the slings and arrows of studio debacles and budget restrictions to get the project on its feet. Wahlberg attributes his decision to sign on as a producer as a last resort

Mark Wahlberg: “It was just out of sheer desperation for getting the movie made. I had already promised Mickey, Dickey, Alice, Charlene…everybody that was involved, that we were going to get this movie made.”

If names like Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale can’t spark immediate studio backing, it’s difficult to imagine what can.

MW: “It seemed at first glance that it was a no brainer. Amazing parts, a wonderful story, a new and interesting world that you’re not familiar with…but it just wasn’t meant to be. So we had to grab a hold of it and force it to happen. Very much like Mickey’s journey to winning the title. He just had to go and make it happen.”

Wahlberg’s crusade tackled far more than industry logistics – he spent three and a half years training for the role, well aware that the story might never leave the page.

MW: “The movie was a go and then it fell a part, and I just continued to train. I just continued to do it and never wanted to stop. I figured if I stopped I’d be giving up on the movie. There were times, obviously, when it was hard and more difficult to get out of bed. You’re training for a film that may or may not happen. But it was certainly worth it in the end.”

Clearly, the part of Micky exceeds the usual standard for a “physically demanding role” (we’re talking stage 5 bulk) but, let’s not forget Christian Bale who also faced severe physical transformation. While Wahlberg nearly drowned himself in Muscle Milk, Bale, needing to drop 30+ pounds, embarked on the L.A-ubiquitous journey of emaciation.

Christian Bale: “I was just running like crazy, I could just run for hours and hours on end. Usually, I always say,’Oh, I just do a lot of coke’ whenever I lose weight…I’m not sure if that’s so funny for this movie.”

Wahlberg’s knowledge of Bale’s unwavering willingness to commit wholeheartedly to roles is what ultimately prompted his decision to approach him for Dicky. Their first exchange took place at a venue frequented by both actors, their daughters’ preschool.

MW: “I thought, there is the guy who is not scared to play this part. Everybody loves the idea of it, but nobody really wants to commit and go there. And I’d seen The Machinist, I’d seen Rescue Dawn, and I thought if he responds to the material this is a chance for us to make the best possible version of the movie. He’s a fearless actor and responded to it immediately.”

In addition to their respective bulking/starving endeavors, Wahlberg and Bale took preparation to the next level, bonding intimately with real-life Micky and Dicky throughout the development process. Bale, in fact, still speaks with Dicky almost daily.

The picture’s creative team prioritized authenticity first and foremost, but in the world of cinema, slightly bending the “true” events is arguably necessary when dealing with story structure. Initially, this didn’t sit well with Mickey… and let’s be real, who wants to piss off an internationally ranked boxer?

CB: “There were a couple of times when I had to physically restrain Micky from going and landing one right on David. We had some initial interesting times when we were rehearsing at Mark’s house, when Mark very nicely put up Micky and Dicky – they lived at his house for some time. There were some script changes going on and Micky wasn’t initially totally understanding in putting a whole life into two hours. A little bit of license has to be taken and, a couple times he a got a little…, ya know. And that’s a serious thing coming from a boxer! But he absolutely came around. After we showed him the movie he didn’t punch any of us!”

Bale, Wahlberg, Russell, and Melissa Leo – who plays Mrs. Ward – are all generating heavy Oscar buzz, and the film itself is a likely contender for Best Picture. Despite the newly instituted 10 nominations giving the star-heavy blockbusters a better shot at nods, it’s still safe to anticipate a highly competitive awards season this year with projects like The Town, Inception, and Shutter Island potentially in the running.

The film has a nationwide release Friday, December 10th!

Last week we learned that Mark Wahlberg was set to take on the lead role in the video game adaptation Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. The film will be written and directed by David O. Russell and possibly co-star Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as Drake’s extended family. If that doesn’t sound like a volatile group of characters we don’t know what does. Russell recently spoke with 24 Frames about his vision for the film and unveiled a few minor details.

The Uncharted video game centers on Nathan Drake and his search for the golden city of El Dorado in the Amazon. There’s lots of action, plenty of adventure, and more than a fair share of deaths along the way. Russell plans to take that premise and expand it a little more.

“This idea really turns me on that there’s a family that’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities … [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice…. We’ll have the family dynamic, which we’ve done in a couple of movies now. And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That’s a really cool idea to me.”

It sounds like he’s trying to make this a real family affair. We wonder if De Niro and Pesci will be packing as much heat as Wahlberg in this movie?

What do you think of Russell’s idea for the film?

Last night David O. Russell’s The Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, and Amy Adams had it’s first ever screening at AFI Festival. The secret screening was only announced yesterday morning and over 100 people were turned away at the door. The star and producer of the film Mark Wahlberg was there to introduce the film and he told the audience “I’m happy it got to the big screen. It took me such a long time to get the movie made that if you don’t like the movie, I’ll do two hours of hard labor.”

Well if one thing is clear it’s that nothing is clear and we’re not sure if Wahlberg is due for some hard labor or an Oscar!

The reviews of this film are extremely mixed. Some critics are saying that this film has some of the best performances they’ve seen all year and that the film will definitely be a contender for best picture, others are calling it “cartoonish” and saying it’s a major let down. We’ve collected reviews from all around and here is what the people have said…

The Overall Good:

It’s got a good pace and a solid performances for some…

David nailed it with “The Fighter” – great pacing (takes it’s time like films used to but never gets boring), great performances (can see a Best Supporting nod for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo), and a story that not only plays well with genres – PWH – Reader of /Film — Note: Bare in mind this reader also stated that he had to turn off I Heart Huckabees because as he said in the review: “I’m not smart enough to enjoy that shit.”

Great writer and a great sense of the characters roots and the town in which its been shot for others…

The screenplay, credited to Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson, pulls off a delicate balancing act of good, old-fashioned sports drama and gritty character study…”The Fighter” does for Lowell what Ben Affleck’s “The Town” did for Charlestown earlier this year. It’s about a place where family and loyalty actually mean something, and sometimes different things, too. – The Wrap

Performances:

This is where people start to disagree. Some think that the was the film that let down some of the characters…

There is something a little too cartoonish about Micky’s completely impossible family and also something a little too short-sighted in a protagonist who can’t see the obvious… Leo plays her with a pinched, determined face and overly styled hair, a woman missing the gene for maternal instincts… Somewhere along the line, the movie pretty much gives up trying to understand her so she is relegated to ringside seats rooting for Micky. -THR

Some weren’t impressed..

Wahlberg’s dull-eyed, sweet receptivity—while combined with brute strength—may hurt his awards chances…. Adams wins points for authenticity over Leo’s bigger-than-life mother hen… Bale risks going too far with his druggie extrovert, but he slowly wins us over. He seems to excel when he’s dieted and sweated out every ounce of fat on his frame.- Indiewire

Others thought it was the perfect balance and awards are on their way…

Rather than dial it up, Wahlberg really lets Bale and Leo steal the show in juicy supporting roles that just about any actor would kill for… Bale is unquestionably the front-runner for Best Supporting Actor, and I imagine he’ll be accepting plenty of critics’ awards over the next few months. In a perfect world, Leo and Adams would both be nominated for Best Supporting Actress… because while Leo will be the performance that women leave talking about, Adams’ continually strong work can’t be denied. – The Wrap

The Action:

Some hated it…

The boxing sequences get bunched toward the end. Russell deliberately shoots them in brightly lit video that makes it look like you’re watching television. He has broadcasters and ringsiders comment on the fights, but seldom takes you close enough to hear what Dickie might be saying to Micky. You’re outside the ring, not inside. – THR

Conversely others loved it for the same reasons…

While the film is ultimately character driven, that doesn’t mean that Russell hasn’t done a phenomenal job filming the scenes in the ring. Shot like an HBO boxing special, you almost forget that you are watching a movie and not an actual sporting event. What makes these scenes even greater, though, is that because the audience has spent so much time with the protagonist and understand the character so well, they actually begin to have a visceral reaction and cheer on the hero with every great punch and dodge. - Cinemablend

And others took a middle-ground…

Only one of the boxing montages in the film appears weak; the others are played for all they’re worth and have viewers gritting teeth. By the time we’re being sold on movie boxing, we’re also so invested in these characters that we’ll ride the train with them wherever it takes us. – Movingpicturesmagazine

Overall:

The final word(s)!

“…like much of this film, the viewer is turned into an observer. You never feel close enough to the action, either in the ring or in the kitchens, living rooms and tough streets where the story takes place. The characters engage you up to a point but never really pull you in.” – THR

“Excellently balancing tones and evoking superb performances from each one of his actors, director David O. Russell has crafted an awesome boxing film.” – Cinemablend

“It’s just a very likable movie and I think it’ll play well with critics and audiences alike.” – /Film

‘Will the movie make the best picture top ten? If all goes right (reviews/box office/critics and guild prizes) it’s possible. The actors shine in this and should be rewarded.” – Indiewire

“We haven’t had a real “Rocky” film for a long time; with these heartfelt characters and the conflict they impart on their world and each other, Paramount seems to have picked a film that could do some bruising at the box office” – Movingpicturesmagazine

“The film represents Russell’s best work to date, and as such, “The Fighter” has to be considered a serious contender for Hollywood’s top prize when March 7 rolls around.” – The Wrap

It seems like despite peoples problems with the film at the end of the day they all enjoyed it on some level. Based off its trailer we thought it was a winner! We’ll have to wait and see it for ourselves before we make up our minds!

The Fighter hits theaters December 10th.

Has anyone out there seen it? If so, leave a comment or e-mail us at tips@screencrave.com and we’ll add you into our review roundup!

The thought of a behind the scenes video from the set of a David O. Russell film strikes fear into our hearts. We know what can happen when candid footage from his films is found and released on the net (are you doing OK Lily Tomlin?). This time he might not press his luck because Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale are his lead actors and those two are known to have a short fuse. Surprisingly, this behind the scenes video highlight’s the main ladies of the cast going at it, Oscar nominees Amy Adams and Melissa Leo.

The Fighter is a boxing film that stars Bale as Dicky Eklund the half-brother of Wahlberg’s ”Irish” Mickey Ward. After kicking a bad drug habit, Eklund turns his life around and helps his brother train and win the world lightweight boxing championship. In the video, we see Mickey’s mom (Leo) and a pack of angry trailer park chicks flock to his porch, which spawns a confrontation between his wife Charlene (Adams) and the acid-washed jeans crew.

See Adams throw some ‘bows when the ladies get too close for comfort…

Who knew little Amy Lou had it in her? We don’t know the context of the scene but it’s probably somewhere in the middle of the film after a major event has happened. It must be serious because that much hair spray and blue eye shadow doesn’t just show up on your doorstep for nothing.

What do you think of the behind the scenes video of The Fighter?

Remember when we told you about Natalie Portman‘s decision to produce and star in the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? That story still stands but now she might be joined by noted director, David O. Russell. According to several online reports Russell has his eye on the Jane Austen inspired zombie feature.

Pajiba is reporting that Russell has been tapped to helm the romantic zombie flick via a close source to the project. The temperamental director most recently wrapped production on the boxing drama, The Fighter. He’s currently in the middle of a deal to direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as well as adapt its screenplay.

Russell is a very talented artist but he’s known for having a short temper. Remember that clip of him and Lily Tomlin going at it on the set of I Heart Huckabees that ended up on the web? Or maybe those rumors about his treatment of the extras on the set of Three Kings? Either way, I’ve never seen him tackle anything horror based in front of the camera so we’ll see what happens here.

Natalie Portman is a consummate professional so I doubt she’ll take any crap from him, especially since she’s one of the film’s producers. Its hard to decipher whether or not his potential involvement is a good or a bad thing. Only time will tell.

What do you think about David O. Russell taking on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

We previously showed you a photo of Christian Bale looking highly emaciated on the set of his upcoming boxing drama, The Fighter. If images like that make your stomach turn, don’t worry because we have a few photos of a shirtless and healthy looking Mark Wahlberg to balance it out. Over at IAmRogue, they’ve posted several production stills from the film, that not only feature Bale and Wahlberg, but also Melissa Leo as their mother.

Check out the emaciated/muscular action in these behind the scenes photos…

Here’s a video of Wahlberg giving us a run through of his daily training regimen. He’s actually upset because he has to wear so many layers of clothing while working out. Poor Mark.

The Fighter is a boxing film that stars Bale as Dicky Eklund, the brother of Wahlberg’s ”Irish” Mickey Ward. After kicking a bad drug habit, Eklund turns his life around and helps his brother train and win the world lightweight boxing championship. Even though she’s not pictured, Amy Adams also co-stars in the film as a Mickey’s love interest.

The Fighter is directed by David O. Russell and will hit theaters sometime next year.

The cast for David O. Russell’s The Fighter is shaping up to be one talent filled ensemble. The cast currently includes Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale as half-brothers, and Oscar nominee Melissa Leo as their mother. Now according to THR, Amy Adams is nearing a deal to join the cast.

The Fighter is a boxing flick that stars Bale as Dicky Eklund, the brother of Wahlberg’s ”Irish” Mickey Ward. After kicking a bad drug habit, Eklund turns his life around and helps his brother to win the world lightweight championship. Adams will come on board to as Charlene, “a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper from Massachusetts who ends up dating Mickey.”

The Fighter begins production next month in Lowell, Massachusetts and will be distributed by Paramount.

Wouldn’t it be great if this film turned out to be the piece of work that finally gets Bale some serious critical attention? We all know he’s got the acting chops, he’s just never received as much recognition as his cast mates. Even Mark Wahlberg has an Oscar nomination, and I never thought I’d see that day.

What do you think of Amy Adams joining the cast?
