As with every new year of television, the weakest shows that cost the most money are often cancelled after airing a handful of episodes. For example: this season, we’ve already seen The Playboy Club get shuttered, among others. TV shows are often about the ensemble, and most of their casts need time to work together to see how their chemistry develops over longer stretches of time. With comedies, that energy and chemistry is pivotal, and with so many shows put together through high-concepts or based around a name talent, everyone needs to find their footing. With that in mind, here are five shows that started rocky, and became brilliant.

For stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette and Director Wes Craven, the Scream franchise isn’t just a movie series, it’s a family. Which is funny for a series based around serial killers, and violence, but when two of the primary cast married each other, there’s going to be a familial vibe. For Scream 4, Craven brought the band back together ten years later for a film that has to work as a sequel and as a film that comments on what’s happened in horror since Scream changed how people saw horror. We’re now less than a month away from Wes Craven‘s Scream 4. The long-in-gestation sequel comes out April 15 and we’re now starting to get even more footage from the film, which stars returning Scream trilogy survivors Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette, and fresh blood Emma Roberts, among others .
