The talented Coen Brothers have been hard at work on their adaptation of True Grit, the famous novel that earned a wider audience when it was brought to the big screen back in 1969. The movie earned John Wayne his first and only Academy Award and is known for being one of the best Westerns ever made. The Coen’s have gotten their hands on it, found an A-list cast, and now have a top notch release date.

The Coen Brothers True Grit remake is moving full speed ahead, and the directors are on the look out for their leading lady. Rumor has it that the majority of the male roles have been filled with the likes of Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. But instead of dipping into the Hollywood pool of actresses, the Coen’s are opening the floodgates to the general public. Do you think you could star opposite this group of heavy hitters?

It’s been a long time since I felt the need to say this, but “Oh snap!” According to Variety, Josh Brolin and Matt Damon are in talks to star in the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit. That’s right, the 1969 western that earned John Wayne his Oscar is still being remade by the duo. As we previously announced last month, Jeff Bridges will take on Wayne’s famous role as Cogburn, a man out for revenge.

Here’s a taste of reverse fortune. As of late all we’ve been hearing about are American directors adapting or remaking foreign (mostly Japanese and Chinese) properties. Oh, how the tables have turned. According to Variety, Chinese director Zhang Yimou is planning on remaking Ethan and Joel Coen‘s 1984 film, Blood Simple. Sony Pictures Classics have agreed to distribute the upcoming Coen brothers adaptation domestically and in major foreign territories.

Joel and Ethan Coen are doubling down. Not only are the remaking a film, they’re remaking a remake of the Charles Portis book “True Grit” (try to follow that after a few cocktails). The original adaptation came out in 1968 and won John Wayne an Oscar and co-starred Robert Duvall, Glen Campbell, Kim Darby, and Dennis Hopper. Needless to say, they have some big shoes to fill if they want to tackle this beast.
Apparently, The Coen’s didn’t like the original adaptation of the book, and think that they can do one better with their own spin. They will once again be teaming up with producer Scott Rudin, who partnered with them in No Country for Old Men, so I doubt it’s going to be your average remake.
I’m not sure how I feel about them messing with a classic, but one thing is for sure, it’s going to be a hard to find a set of modern actors to come up with half the talent of the original cast.

Another novel that’s barely seen the light of day has already got a film adaptation in the works. According to Variety, Scott Rudin and Miramax Films have recently acquired the rights to The Believers. The novel was written by Zoe Heller and was just published this week. Rudin has worked on a ridiculous amount of films, but you may know him for 2007′s No Country for Old Men. He won the Best Picture Oscar along with The Coen Brothers for their production of the western .
Find out more about Believers and it’s production after the jump.
