On the surface, Fright Night has a number of strikes going against it. It’s a remake. It’s in 3-D. The original is loved by fans and unknown to the general public – meaning that its name brand value is low, and those who love the original are probably going to be annoyed. but to make it they assembled a great cast (including Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin), and they had a good starting point. It would be nice to say that the film overcomes those obstacles, but – though there are some nice touches here and there – it doesn’t work. Check out our review….

The Players:

Director: Craig Gillespie

Writer: Marti Noxon

Actors: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Toni Collette, David Tenant

Cinematography by: Javier Aguirresarobe

Music by: Ramin Djawadi

The Plot:

Charlie Brewster (Yelchin) is dating hot girl Amy (Poots), and lives with his single mom Jane (Collette) in Las Vegas. They live next door to Jerry Dandridge (Farrell), who says he’s a construction worker, and comes across as a bull-headed straight guy who’s obviously pretty hot. Charlie’s been ducking old friend “Evil” Ed (Mintz-Plasse), but is bribed into doing some investigating with him, as Ed thinks Jerry’s a vampire. When Ed goes missing, Charlie feels guilty enough to check on his neighbor, and there Charlie discovers his neighbor is a vampire. He goes to Peter Vincent (Tenant) to get some help. Vincent is a A-list magician with an interest in the occult. But now Charlie is on Jerry’s radar, and that’s a bad place to be.

The Good:

The Setting: Las Vegas is a city built on the industry of partying, and so it’s a great place to visit, but not a stable place to live. The idea of people moving away randomly and a transient life is a perfect setting for a vampire. You wish they had done more with it.

A Mid-Section Set Piece: There’s a sequence in the middle where Brewster sneaks into Jerry’s house, which allows Jerry to toy with Charlie, and it’s tense, funny, and has a great ending.

The Comedy: David Tenant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse play the more comic relief roles, and every time they’re on screen the film gets juice out of Tenant’s rock-n-roll alcoholic magician and Evil Ed’s cutting jokes.

The Transition into the Third Act: with movies like this, there’s generally a period where the main character feels like the boy who cried wolf. One of the best parts of the film is that you think you’re going to have to sit through more of that, but the film changes gears quickly.

The Mixed:

Colin Farrell: He’s great on screen, but he doesn’t have much of a character to play. It’s great to see Farrell maturing into the film star Hollywood thought he might be ten years ago, and it’s a star performance, but the script lets him down.

The Bad:

The Remake Factor: The original followed a young boy who’s about to lose his virginity when he’s distracted by two men moving in next door (and may be distracted in that way). What follows is a very smart B movie that then puts Peter Vincent – a cinematic vampire hunter – into a situation where he’s confronted with the real thing. It’s well worth checking out. But when this film tries to work in those details, it doesn’t know how to. Here Peter Vincent is a magician, and though it would be impossible to replicate a horror movie host in modern times, why Charlie goes to a stage magician he doesn’t even like for advice is thin. And then how it brings Vincent in for the third act is even thinner and adds a plot point that could be removed and change nothing. There are numerous other examples of this. Like…

Evil Ed and Charlie Brewster: The starting point for their relationship is great. Brewster’s gone on to be a part of the popular kid set, while Ed’s a loser. In the original they were friends who playfully mocked each other (though there was an underlying tension there). With their relationship over, it’s Ed who tips off Charlie about his neighbor the vampire. But though it’s understandable that Charlie would want nothing to do with “Evil” Ed, it starts the film with a protagonist being mean to the one person who is right. And then later it’s revealed his girlfriend likes him because he’s a geek, so he ended that friendship for the wrong reasons. And then later, when Ed and Charlie confront each other under different circumstances it doesn’t pay off. So you’re left with a lot of things that seem to be in there because of the original – but don’t work on their own terms – on top of a main character who’s not very empathetic in terms of the narrative.

Thin Main Characters: Pure evil doesn’t really need a motivation, but you’re left wondering why Jerry lives where he does, and why he does some of the things he does – and a lot of it comes across as writers using the fact that he’s a vampire to avoid those questions. But he’s obviously been doing this for decades (if not centuries), so it raises questions that go unanswered. And then there’s Charlie Brewster, who doesn’t really care about a vampire next door until it’s a threat to his life, and spends the majority of the film responding to things that are happening around him, on top of being a bad boyfriend and jerk to his old buddy. If the tumult of being a teen is supposed to be reflected in his “journey” it doesn’t play.

Overall:

A fumble. Like a number of remakes, it’s either not faithful enough or entirely too faithful to emerge as a complete thought. For every good decision, there’s a number of bad ones. It’s too bad, because it feels like there’s a good movie in it.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse got his break in Superbad, and the concern was that it would be a one-off for the actor, but he’s become Hollywood’s go-to geeks. For his role in the remake of Fright Night he plays “Evil” Ed, the one-time best friend of Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), who first warns him that his neighbor might be a vampire. We talked about this role, and his upcoming project The Hand Job. Check it out, minor spoilers follow…

How did you come to the role of Evil Ed in Fright Night?

They sent it to my agents, and they sent it over to me so I read it, when I first read it, it was a remake of a vampire film and it felt like something they done many times, and I’m not a big fan of remakes, so I was very skeptical at first, it was bloody, and funny and Craig Gilespie was the director and I’m a big fan of his, and Colin Farrell was attached. With Evil Ed they wanted me to read for it, and it was a very pivotal and important character, so I wanted to bring justice to that, and I hope I did.

Do you have a favorite vampire movie?

I haven’t thought about that. I’m not the biggest vampire guy. The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time.

Which is a remake, so it’s good you like a remake.

Yeah, that remake is unbelievable. I haven’t seen the original Thing, so for me that was the original.

Maybe this film will be the original for a new generation.

That would be awesome.

With your character Evil Ed, did you talk about where the character’s name came from, did you make it up, because it’s never explained

It’s not really explained in the original either. Anton (Yelchin) and I figured it was a nickname that just worked with Ed, Anton’s Charlie Brewster called Ed “Evil” when they were growing up and it just stuck. And it makes sense for the movie because he turns evil. A little foreshadowing there.

I was thinking because he was kind of a D&D nerd it used to be Medieval Ed and got shortened.

(Laughs) I like that.

You have a lot of great lines, was that mostly from Marti Noxon?

Mainly Marti.

As you’re known for your comedies, was there room for improv?

There wasn’t much. Everything moved in the script, so there wasn’t a lot of time to improv, but Craig let us play in the first couple scenes when I’m in the school, and I’m in the house with Anton, he let us improv here and there, and a bunch of stuff made the movie. David Tenant improv’d a lot too.

Do you have a favorite line that made the film?

There was one line I improv’d in my audition – months before we started shooting – that Craig loved and put in the movie. When we’re in the school I say something about tying my Stretch Armstrong around his balls for an hour so he can jerk off, and that made the movie.

With Evil Ed, how different do think it was on the page? Did you feel like you were following the script?

I felt like I was following the script, but with a different actor it could have been more like “I’m sad, I don’t have a best friend any more, boo.” It could have been hateful, but I wanted to bring a smarmy *sshole side to him, so people didn’t say “he’s a bitch.” I wanted people to say “I feel bad for him, but he’s going to make an awesome vampire because he’s got this dark side to him.” I tried to bring that.

Did you play it different once you turned into a vampire?

Completely. That was another thing that attracted me to it, it’s like I got to play two different roles in the movie. Evil Ed, when he’s human, he’s a big fan of sci-fi and vampires and nerdy things like that, so when he became a vampire it was like he was born to be one, it’s like the evil, hilarious *ssholish side came out and it was awesome.

The nice thing about this part for you is you get to kill for ten minutes, and then come back and kill for ten minutes.

It’s true (laughs).

Well, even before he turns, he seems like a kind of guy you’d want to be friends with because he’s such a great dick.

I agree, he’s an *sshole, but he’s a smart *sshole.

They pitched this to you, have you ever worried about playing too many nerds?

Not really because I do have a nerdy look to me, it’s not like I’m not aware of that. And every nerd I’ve played are completely different nerds, so I want to do the role justice, and I can’t deny working with Harold Ramis, and Craig Gillespie and David Wain and all these amazing directors.

Do you tend look at who’s directing before you make a decision?

Oh yeah, completely, that’s a big decision for me. I need to know they can get a good performance out of me, because they’re directing me.

You mentioned Harold Ramis, that must have been nice even if that film didn’t turn out as well as one might have hoped.

I know, it was a bummer. But it was blast, Harold Ramis would play acoustic guitar between every take, it was something beautiful to watch. Jack Black and Michael (Cera) again, I didn’t regret it one bit.

You’ve got The Hand Job coming up, are you shooting that now?

We finished that a couple weeks ago. It was a quick shoot, I was only on set for a week, everyone else was on for – like – three weeks. It was a very low budget indie, but it’s going to be hilarious.

Well, you and Aubrey Plaza and Bill Hader…

And Andy Sandberg, Donald Glover, Johnny Simmons, yeah.

What’s your part in that?

I play a character named Duffy who’s a douchebag kid from the 90’s who is best friends with Johnny Simmons. Johnny is in love with Aubrey but then I find out that Aubrey is trying to hook up with a lot of guys, so I try to hook up with her.

How was your sex scene?

It was good. Aubrey did a bunch of different things in it – I think it turned out very funny.

Between this and Superbad you’ve had a number of comic sex scenes, was there anything you applied from Superbad to this one?

No, it’s funny when I was on Superbad I was seventeen so I couldn’t actually be on top of her, so we had to shoot it in weird angles and different ways. So strange, so I didn’t apply any of that to The Hand Job.

You’ve also got the How to Train Your Dragon franchise and the upcoming Paranorman, how do you compare doing live action to voice acting?

It’s awesome, with the live action stuff it’s all been rated R, so I get to be raunchy and I try to make my peers laugh. Animation is for children, so I have to do a complete 180 and make kids laugh, which is very exciting – it’s fun to get to do both.

Do you ever find yourself doing R rated takes for the animated films?

There are sometimes when I’m ranting, when near the end of a take I’ll swear to make the directors and everyone else in the other room laugh, but I never do it on purpose because I know it won’t make the movie.

Fright Night opens August 19.

The first trailer for the remake of Fright Night (and much of the early material) focused on Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. Yelchin plays teenager Charlie Brewster, who thinks his next door neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Farrell) is a vampire. What it didn’t do is spotlight much of Evil Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) or Peter Vincent (David Tenant), two of the most memorable characters from the original. Now there’s a new trailer, and Evil Ed and Peter Vincent finally make their bows. Check it out.

Okay, so this tells us little about Evil Ed, and doesn’t hint at the sexual confusions that can be found in the original. What it does do is give a better look at this version’s take on Peter Vincent, who is obviously modeled on Chris Angel and David Blaine. Since there aren’t a lot of hosts of horror programs like there were in the 1970′s and 1980′s (maybe teenagers know who Elvira is, but probably not), it’s a smart choice, and is one of the keys to this film working on its own terms.

Though I’m on the fence about this remake in general (the original is one of the best genre pictures from the 80′s), the end bit where Jerry Dandridge blows up the house to avoid the rule of having to be invited in is a very clever idea. How much of this works on its own terms is yet to be seen, but this new footage gives hope. The film hits theaters August 19. Working against the movie is that it’s in 3-D. We shall see how far that format’s stock fall in the next couple of weeks.

Have you seen the original Fright Night?

The Fright Night remake is due August 19, and the first official images from the film are now online. The film stars Anton Yelchin as Charlie Brewster, who has a vampire (Colin Farrell) move in next door. The Craig Gillespie-directed remake tones down some of the sexual subtext of the original, which is part of the reason why the film still plays well, but the new spin on the material has yet to be revealed. The film also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Imogen Poots. Check out the stills…

The success or failure (at least artistically) of the film seems to ride on the makers doing something new or interesting with the original material. The first film had great Hitchcockian direction and a sexually charged subtext. The film begins with Charlie about to lose his virginity only to be distracted by two men moving in next door. Though it has been noted that the actor who played the original Evil Ed eventually went into gay pornography, and the female lead later outed herself as a lesbian, there’s a constant pan-sexuality to the film. But it also works whether you pick up on that or not.

The film test screened this week, and word has covered a wide spectrum. The film was shot to be R-rated, if the film doesn’t work, expect it to be cut down for a PG-13.

Are you excited for Fright Night?

McLovin’ and Doctor Who have signed on to star in DreamWorks’ Fright Night remake. According to THR, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant have joined the cast that currently includes Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, and Toni Collette. With the roles of the awkward teen, suave vampire, and clueless mother already filled who will the new guys play?

The new Fright Night will stick to the original premise of a teenager who’s convinced that his neighbor is a vampire even though no one believes him. Tennant will star as Peter Vincent, who was played by Roddy McDowall in the 1985 version but instead of being a late night TV host he’ll be a Las Vegas magician whose show revolves around horror-movie imagery. Vincent claims to be a vampire expert, but when the teen turns to him for assistance, he’s less than helpful.

Mintz-Plasse will play Yelchin’s friend Evil Ed, who feels slighted that Charlie has left his nerdy past behind so he decides to move over to the dark side with the vampires. It’s great that they’ve managed to cast all these actors in their respective roles but they’ve yet to find the right person to play Charley’s (Yelchin) love interest who was played by Amanda Bearse (yes, Marcy from “Married With Children”) in the original. They need to get on the ball with that.

What do you think of Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant joining Fright Night?

As I said right after seeing this film at ShoWest, this film does what it says it will, it kick’s ass. There are some things that I could pick at if I really wanted to but overall it’s a darkly comedic film about fake superheros fighting crime and it’s some of the most fun I’ve had in theaters all year. The tone, the dialogue and the comedic-violence are brilliantly well executed…I was sold as soon as I saw the adorable Chloe Moretz call a group of mobsters “cunts” and stab the living shit out of them…

Actors: Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Clark Duke, Evan Peters, Mark Strong, Lyndsy Fonseca

The Plot:

Without giving too much away, the film is about a teenager who decides that he can’t take the violence in his neighborhood anymore so he does what comes naturally to him… puts on some cheap spandex and starts kicking some ass! He begins to gather a group of followers, some who are more professional, others who have more money… all with their own distinct personalities and reasons for joining. Let the ride begin!

The Good:

The Tone: What makes this movie so great is that for however fantastical it is still based on real people AND has a strong sense that it’s based in an insane reality. Yes it goes over the top and crazy, but always in a very organic, believable way (until we get to the end). From the colors on the screen, to the lighting, and the overall tone, they did a great job of never making it feel like an unattainable movie. It’s more like a real life story with extraordinary happenings.

The Acting: Across the board, great performances. Nicholas Cages gives one of his best performances in a LONG time by finally letting his inner nerd come out! There are few 10-year-olds that could be both as sweet and violent as Chloe Moretz who steals every scene she’s in with her amazing performance. Mark Strong, the token bad guy of the year delivers again. Christopher Mintz-Plasse will have you laughing as always. And Aaron Johnson proves that all the recent attention he’s been getting is much deserved.

The Violence: There are some graphic scenes when needed, but for the most part the violence is done with a sense of humor that allows you to have fun and let loose. Yes you may cringe, but odds are you’ll be laughing while you do it.

The Comedy: As I’ve said before, what makes this film so great is it’s ability to mock other films like it and even itself. It has fun and never takes itself too seriously.

The Directing: There were a lot of good choices made in this film, starting with Vaughn believing in the film when no one else did. The fact that no one would fund it so he raised $35 million on his own and made the movie anyway (and ended up selling it for more than he asked for). You can tell that this is a passion project and that he really put everything he had into the film and left no stone unturned.

The Bad:

Meh: Id’ have to get really picky, there were some structure issues towards the end which if I’m honest, really didn’t effect the movie for me at all. It’s a fun ride, this film isn’t about being perfect, it’s about kicking some fucking ass.

Overall:

Go see it now! Find a packed theater (it’s great to hear everyone’s response), buy some popcorn, and have a blast!

Rating: 9/10

Tonight is the night that Hollywood’s elite comes out to watch a bunch of kids curse and kill criminals. We’re talking about the West Coast premiere of Matthew Vaughn’s new film Kick-Ass that opens nationwide this Friday on April 16th. Below you can watch the movie’s cast including Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, and Nicholas Cage walk the red carpet, take a couple of pictures, and wave to their fans. Check it all out live on Ustream…

Kick-Ass is based on the Mark Millar comic that begs the question, what would happen if superheroes really did exist? The film centers on a group of crime fighting vigilantes who don’t have any super powers, but overcompensate with weapons and attitude. It’s a prime example of fantasy meeting reality, with a bit of comedy thrown in.

The movie has been receiving great reviews since it played at the ShoWest and SXSW film festivals and now it’s time for the rest of the world to see what it’s about. In the film Johnson plays the title character, Moretz stars as Hit Girl (perhaps the most deadly out of the bunch), and her father Big Daddy is played by a “Leave it To Beaver-esque” Cage. There’s also Mintz-Plasse aka McLovin’ who appears as Red Mist, the son of Strong’s villainous character Frank D’Amico.

Check out all the action as it happens at the Kick-Ass premiere. It’s set to start at 6:30 pm PST time so get ready.

As much as I hate having to become a fan or add my name to anything in order to get something, it’s a pretty small price to pay in order to have access to new clips, live interviews with the director and more… And I have to say, this film is completely worth it (check out our ShoWest First Look).

We have one of the latest clips for you of Kick-Ass riding around in The Red Mist’s cleverly named “Mist-Mobile” with all the finest crime stopping toys that a rich superhero could buy. The two “super-heroes” played by Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse have two very different ideas about what it takes to be a superhero, but both of them are equals when it comes to horrible dancing. Check it out…

Just yesterday we brought you the latest international character poster for Kick-Ass that featured Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl. Today, a new behind the scenes video has popped up online promoting the film and it shows several interviews from the stars including Moretz, Aaron Johnson, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and director Matthew Vaughn. It’s an on set video that was taken during Kick-Ass’ production and it features some strong language, so beware.

The majority of the video centers on Matthew Vaughn and what he went through to find the right actor to play Dave/Kick-Ass. It turns out that he was hell bent on casting an American for the role, but out of over 500 kids none of them seemed right. When Johnson came in to read for the part he did it in an American accent and Vaughn asked him if he was from New York and he replied,’ no I’m English.’ At that point, Johnson was speaking in his normal British accent and Vaughn thought he was making fun of him because he too is an England native.

Johnson’s casting is a prime example of not necessarily getting what you want, but getting what you need. There aren’t that many American actors that I can think of off the top of my head who could have taken on this role. Kick-Ass isn’t a PG-13 action movie for kids. It’s rated R and filled with violence and bad language. Can you name any young actors who could handle this type of material?

If you want to check out the Empire set visit, here’s the video. We’ll have the embedded version up as soon as it’s available.

What do you think of Vaughn’s auditioning process for Kick-Ass?

A new poster has been released for the Matthew Vaughn comic adaptation of Kick-Ass. The film’s first teaser trailer debuted weeks ago, as well as a poster featuring Aaron Johnson as the title character. The latest one sheet promotes Kick-Ass’s sidekick, Red Mist as portrayed by Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Check out his full poster below…

The marketing for the movie wants to capitalize on how unrealistic it is to be a superhero in today’s society. Films like X-Men, Spider-Man, or even The Dark Knight make the idea of superpowers and fighting prowess a possibility, but that’s not the case with Kick-Ass. The first poster had the tagline, “I can’t fly. But I can kick your ass,” and with the latest one featuring Red Mist it says, ” I can’t read your mind. But I can kick your ass.” Are you noticing a trend here?

It’s going to be interesting to see what Nicolas Cage‘s Big Daddy and Chloe Moretz‘s Hit Girl posters say. Kick-Ass will arrive in theaters on April 16, 2010 and is an adaptation of the comic by Mark Millar (the man behind Wanted).

A few new posters have popped up online for the upcoming Matthew Vaughn comic adaptation, Kick-Ass. The little engine that could is slowly but surely making its way to theaters and to jumpstart its promotion Lionsgate has released four banners from the film. They feature Aaron Johnson as the title character, Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist, and Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy.

Check out the posters below:

Kick-Ass is based on the popular Mark Millar (Wanted) and John Romita, Jr. comic series about a dorky high school student named Dave Lizewski who becomes a vigilante hero overnight. He joins forces with an 11 year old assassin and her trigger happy father, to become an underground crime fighting team. The film will hit American theaters on April 16, 2010 and will be rated R for ass-kicking violence, language, and you know the rest.

It’s been a long journey for this film to gain major backing due to its graphic content with minors at the center of it all. After the footage from Kick-Ass was shown at this year’s Comic-Con, it earned a standing ovation from the audience. Movie studios were forced to take notice and engaged in a bidding war to distribute the film. Eventually, Lionsgate won out and the rest is history.

I vaguely remember reading an article about the upcoming animated feature Marmaduke. The film is based on the popular comic strip character of the same name that was originally created by Brad Anderson. The film will be a mix of CGI and live action following in the footsteps of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield. The newly announced cast features everyone from a British comedian to a Black Eye Pea, find out who’ll be behind the scenes of Marmaduke.

Amanda Seyfried – “Mazie,”

Jeremy Piven -”Bosco,”

Ron Perlman -”Chupadogra,”

Christopher Mintz-Plasse -”Guiseppe,”

Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson -”Jezebel.”

Steve Coogan – “Raisin,”

George Lopez - “Carlos”

Damon Wayans Jr. – “Thunder.”

Lee Pace – “Phil Winslow”

I’m not really surprised by Fergie’s casting in this film because she has a history of voice work as a child actor. She used to do one of the voices on Charlie Brown. I think the one thing we want to know is, who’s going to play Marmaduke? The character isn’t even mentioned.

“The original comic strip for the character was about a family and their Great Dane has been published fairly regularly since 1954, and it spawned a series of cartoons in 1980.”
