This week Daniel Radcliffe came out and admitted to being drunk on the Harry Potter set. We knew he had trouble with alcohol, but really? Well, drunk or not, we’ll always remember him as Harry Potter. Comedian Chris Rock told the L.A. Times that he’s got some serious plans for himself and Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy. And, Gary Oldman went on Jimmy Kimmel to cover this week’s episode of “Jersey Shore“. Catch up below.

Mindy Kaling Lands TV Show: The awesome Mindy Kaling, Kelly from “The Office“, has landed a major gig with Fox. According to Deadline, the studio has given the green light to her single-camera comedy. The show will center around Kaling as a young “Bridget Jones-type” Ob/Gyn doctor balancing her personal and professional life. The only bad news is, if Fox picks up the series, Kaling will no longer be coming back to “The Office”. Oh well!
Katy Perry 3D: Katy Perry is following in Justin Bieber‘s footsteps. The pop sensation might be headed to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Paramount has already started the dealmaking with Perry’s camp to create a documentary-style 3D film centered around the colorful singer.
Drunk Harry Potter: In recent years Daniel Radcliffe has been pretty vocal about his previous drinking problem. Well, this week he brought the subject up again during an interview with Heat Magazine, and told them that while he never drank on the Harry Potter set, he did go into work drunk. Next time we watch one of the Potter films, we’ll be trying to figure out if he’s hammered or not. Read the whole interview at Heat Magazine.
Now on VOD: This week a new film titled, After Fall, Winter hit VOD. The film is described a “dangerous, sexy, poignant, and at times [darkly] funny story” about two people looking for love. The film is written, produced and directed by Eric Schaeffer and stars him and Lizzie Brochere. Check out the trailer at the film’s official site.
Chris Rock To Mary Melissa McCarthy: Chris Rock told the L.A. Times this week that he’s writing a new script in which he and Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy play a “Jerry Springer couple.” We don’t know about you, but that something we’d love to see.

Grown Ups 2 is Officially a Go

Grown Ups, the Adam Sandler-starring vehicle which reunited him with friends Kevin James, Rob Schnieder, Chris Rock and David Spade made a lot of money. $162 Million, point of fact, making it the second highest grossing Sandler film, just about two million shy of Big Daddy. Which is exactly why Sony has greenlit a sequel, and it’s now expected to hit theaters July 12, 2013. Aren’t we lucky.

Part of the film’s success had to do with bringing Sandler together with his friends, as Kevin James and Chris Rock also have respectable audiences, and getting that Saturday Night Live flavor back by bringing Spade and Schnieder into the mix. The film was mercilessly panned by critics, netting a 10% approval rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. That didn’t stop audiences though, as the film played strong throughout the summer of 2010.

Sandler is back on writing duties with Fred Wolf, who wrote the first film, though many would suggest calling it writing was an exaggeration. Sandler’s most recent film, Jack and Jill, was something of an underperformer, as it didn’t hit $100 Million like many of his starring vehicles, so it’s likely that Sony (which has been home to Sandler for some time) wanted a sequel. Or perhaps he just likes hanging out with his friends.

There’s a whole lot of funny on DVD this week as two spring comedy hits roll onto shelves in the form of Date Night and Death at a Funeral. Plus there’s a spring comedy you never heard of called The Joneses (with David Duchovny!)

All that plus a big hit show that I’m not sure anybody has ever heard of, plus the feature that’s sweeping nation highlighting that one DVD you can’t believe actually was released.

FEATURE FILMS

Date Night and Death at a Funeral

I combine these two DVDs for one reason – we’re still waiting for that big no-doubt-about-it comedy of the year. Both of these took their shots, had some decent laughs, some good box office, but never reached the status of being that seminal comedy hit of the calendar year.

You know the movie. The one that everybody saw, everybody quoted for months, everybody stops on HBO at 4:30 on a Sunday and watches the rest of it. Where is that movie this year?

Both Funeral and Date Night had the formulas: Solid casts with big comedy stars (Rock, Fey, Lawrence, Carrell, et. al.), decent trailers with good laughs, and big time premises that normally leave something lasting in the brains of viewers.

But neither really reached the heights we come to expect from that one movie that becomes the comedy of the year. Movies like the following:

2009 – The Hangover
2008 – Tropic Thunder
2007 – Knocked Up
2006 – Talladega Nights
2005 – Wedding Crashers
2004 – Anchorman
2003 – Bruce Almighty
2002 – My Big Fat Greek Wedding
2001 – Legally Blonde
2000 – Meet The Parents

See that list? There isn’t a single argument to be made anywhere on that list. Maybe with the exception of Legally Blonde, but even that connected much harder than either of the comedies being released this week. And even more than any other comedy that’s come out at any point this year. Including hits like The Other Guys, Grown Ups and Hot Tub Time Machine. None of them really had the grip, the quality, the zeigeist, or the appeal to the “Comedy of the Year”.

And that’s what’s so troubling. With the exception of Parents every single movie on the list had been released already at this point in the year. So that leaves us to wonder…

Grown Ups: Movie Review

Adam Sandler took the major players from the 1992 cast of “Saturday Night Live,” put them in a movie, and named it Grown Ups. The actor co-wrote the screenplay and stars in the film, which includes a who’s who of comedy veterans. On the surface, it looks like an excuse for a group of 40-somethings to act like 12 year olds but surprisingly, beyond the crude jokes and gags, there’s a legitimate story about friendship and family…

The Plot:

Grown Ups centers on a group of friends who reunite after 30 years following the death of their junior high basketball coach. While spending the holiday weekend together they reminisce about old times, reconnect with each other, and form new bonds with their families.

The Good

The Cast: Watching so many SNL alumni in the same place at the same time brought back memories of when the show was actually good. The actors had great chemistry and it looked as if they genuinely enjoyed each other’s company.
The Story – The idea of grown men reliving their childhood, while trying to get their children to experience one void of video games and cell phones is an interesting concept. Sandler and Wolf took that premise, laced it with jokes, and made it entertaining while keeping it solid.
The Direction: Dennis Dugan did a great job with the pace, the look, and the tone of the film. He made sure the main actors got their fair share of material and he kept everything balanced.
The Comedy - It’s been a long time since any of the actors in this movie put out anything seriously funny but Grown Ups puts an end to that dry spell. This film delivers the laughs.

The Bad

Villains: They weren’t flushed out at all. They were a group of misfits carrying around a 30 year old grudge for no logical reason. They were all one dimensional and didn’t have any real character development, which is unfortunate because Colin Quinn and Tim Meadows are also former SNL stars who are just as talented as the primary members of the cast.

Overall:

Grown Ups is a fun and enjoyable summer movie. The camaraderie between the actors is what makes the film worth it.

Rating: 8/10

A new UK trailer has been released for the Dennis Dugan directed comedy Grown Ups. It features a who’s who of former SNL stars including Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Maya Rudolph, and that one guy they just can’t shake, Kevin James. This trailer reveals slightly different footage from what we saw in the domestic version but manages to keep the same tone. Take a look…

The plot of the movie centers around five school friends, Sandler, Rock, Spade, Schneider, and James who reunite after 30 years to celebrate fourth of July weekend together. They try to reconnect with one another while discovering the changes they’ve all made over time. The film also stars Salma Hayek and Maria Bello as two of the long suffering wives who are married into this group of man-children.

The screenplay for Grown Ups was written by Sandler and Fred Wolf, which explains why we had such a hard time laughing at the jokes in the trailer. It’s been a while since Sandler has put out a good comedy; it seems like all of his decent material got used up during the mid and late-nineties with Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison,The Waterboy and Big Daddy. What the hell happened?

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Chris Rock and Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups and it’s filled with plenty of “Saturday Night Live” alumni including David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Maya Rudolph. It also stars that one guy who wasn’t on the show but always manages to pop up in Sandler’s films named Kevin James. Check out the latest trailer…

When the teaser trailer for this film was released back in November I couldn’t stop wondering what it would have been like if Chris Farley was still around. He would have definitely fit in and taken over the spot that’s awkwardly being occupied by Kevin James in this SNL fest.

Overall, the movie does look semi-hilarious but I’m not sure if that will be enough to warrant my hard earned money. It’s been a long time since any of these guys have put out a decent comedy. Paul Blart: Mall Cop was a fluke that needs scientific research done to explain its success, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo 1 & 2 were pure slapstick, and are we supposed to be intrigued by Rock’s latest remake Death at a Funeral? Perhaps, Grown Ups will be their redemption project but only time will tell.

Chris Rock Writing High and Low Remake For Mike Nichols

Chris Rock has managed to dabble in a few remakes over the course of his career, with the most recent being Death at a Funeral, a rip-off of the British film of the same name. If he likes tackling off beat comedies that’s great but when he starts messing with Akira Kurosawa’s work we’ve got a serious problem. According to Black Voices, Rock will pen a screenplay for the upcoming remake of High and Low for Oscar winning director Mike Nichols. Let’s all let out a big, resounding what the f*ck?!

According to the site, Rock revealed in an interview that he’s working on the script for the remake of Kurosawa’s 1963 film Tengoku to jigoku, which was loosely based on the Evan Hunter novel, King’s Ransom. The story centers on a wealthy industrialist named Kingo Gondo whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper. Even though this project seems to be completely out of left field, David Mamet actually penned a remake years ago for Martin Scorsese but it never came to fruition.

Every adaptation Rock does always turns into an unnecessary waste of film when it hits theaters. For example, 2001′s Down to Earth was loosely based on the classic Heaven Can Wait, which in turn was a remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan and it was horrible. Besides that he also starred in I Think I Love My Wife, (which I know I hated) an American version of the French film ‘L’Amour l’après-midi’ (Love in the Afternoon/Chloe in the Afternoon). Both films were sub-par remakes and did a huge disservice to the originals.

Can we please stop the madness? If you’re out and about and happen to see Rock walking on the street can you pass him the memo that says, “we don’t need anymore remakes,” because he clearly didn’t get it.

International Grown Ups Trailer

The international trailer for the upcoming ensemble comedy Grown Ups has been released, and it’s slightly better than the domestic version. The film’s main characters are mostly played by “Saturday Night Live” alumni, with the exception of Kevin James. The latest trailer gives us some new footage, and highlights some of the wives in the film that includes Salma Hayek.

The plot of the movie centers around five school friends, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and James who reunite after 30 years to celebrate fourth of July weekend together. They try to reconnect with one another while discovering the changes they’ve all made over time. Grown Ups is directed by Dennis Dugan, who had a hand in the not funny I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which can explain the weird placement of Kevin James within this crew.

In the latest trailer, they expand on what they showed in the first version, which includes more footage of the wives as played by Hayek, Maya Rudolph, and Maria Bello. Even though there’s a lot of talent in this cast, I’m not convinced that this will be a laugh out loud comedy. Sandler’s films haven’t been that hilarious as of late and this one looks like more of the same.

Chris Rock’s Death at a Funeral Trailer

Somehow this new comedy managed to fly under my radar. Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence have teamed up to star in a remake of Death at a Funeral. The original film came out a couple of years ago and was directed by Frank Oz, and for some odd reason Rock and a group of his friends thought it would be a good idea to redo it.

The cast for this movie has to be one of the strangest ensembles to ever collaborate on screen. Aside from Rock and Lawrence, we have Loretta Devine, Regina Hall, Danny Glover, Tracy Morgan, Luke Wilson, Zoe Saldana, James Marsden, Kevin Hart, Columbus Short, and Peter Dinklage. What’s Peter Dinklage doing in this movie?! Oh yes, he’s playing the blackmailing gay lover of the film’s dead patriarch, which is the same character he played in the original. How the hell did they get him to reprise his role?

Everyone looks so misplaced and partially confused as to why their even in this movie. Death at a Funeral is directed by Neil Labute, and is scheduled for release on April 16, 2010. The remake pales in comparison to the 2007 version, but watch the trailer to make your own decision…

Merry Madagascar Special Airs Tonight

Tonight on NBC, Merry Madagascar will air as a new Christmas special for the peacock network. A few months ago, word had spread that the popular animated film would make the jump to network television and it’s finally here. All the usual suspects from the cast will return with a brand new story to tell.

Merry Madagascar will feature the voices of Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Melman (David Schwimmer), and Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) as their famous zoo based alter egos. Even though their the main cast, we can’t forget the infamous, Penguins who will also make an appearance during the special tonight. It airs at 8/7c on NBC and will unfortunately run for only half an hour, which sucks, but Merry Madagascar will make another appearance on Saturday, November 28th.

Madagascar is one of my favorite contemporary animated films, it’s running neck and neck with Ice Age. It’s one of those films that are supposed to be for children, yet there are certain jokes in it that only an adult would understand. The Christmas special will also be available on DVD, which still doesn’t make up for that fact that it’s less than 30 minutes. When they did the Shrek the Halls special a couple of years ago was it this short?

A teaser trailer has finally been released for the ensemble comedy Grown Ups, which mostly features Saturday Night Live alumni except for one. And we’re not referring to the Will Ferrell era of SNL, we’re talking the bad boy years that featured Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider. All of them will be on the big screen together along with Paul Blart Mall Cop, Kevin James.

A few of the female talents in this film include Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. Grown Ups is directed by Dennis Dugan, who had a hand in the not funny I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which can explain the weird placement of Kevin James within this crew.

After watching this it’s hard not to wish that Chris Farley was still around to get in on some of the action. He could have easily taken James’ place, because he sticks out like a sore thumb. Grown Ups doesn’t look laugh out loud funny but it’s an opportunity for us to see if that old school SNL magic is still there.

Grown Ups hits theaters on June 25, 2010.

Good Hair: Movie Review

Chris Rock has a new documentary, titled Good Hair, coming out on Friday, and can you take a guess of what it’s about… Hair! A better description is Chris Rock’s journey across the United States and into India, to shine a light on all the things black women are willing to do to their hair to get it to look the way they want it. Why are women spending everything they have to have what they think of is “good hair?” From weaves to relaxing and the fear of wearing it natural, Rock takes us for a ride leaving us with the real question: Is his movie about hair is any good?

The Plot

Good Hair is a hilarious documentary led by Chris Rock that sheds light on the emotions, time, and pain black women go through to get “good hair.” The film is a mixture of interviews with barber shop patrons, people in the hair industry, and various celebrities all talking about their experiences with hair. The film highlights the dangerous chemicals that are regularly used to relax black womens’, and many times young girls, hair to achieve what the soft look. It moves onto the discussion of weaves and where the hair is coming from.

The Good

The Humor: The movie was definitely very funny because it didn’t rely on Chris Rock to deliver the hilarity (although he definitely added to it), it had it on it’s own. The funny moments came from people being interviewed, their personalities and stories about their hair. There was an amazing story behind how Pepa, from Salt-N-Pepa, achieved her famous look from the “Push It” video, which will have you rolling on the floor, along with a number of unexpected one-liners.
It’s Focus: When it comes down to it, you can talk about weaves and bad perms for days and it would be hilarious, but you’ve got to have a story to tell and they did. Beneath the humor, they were focused on a real message. The movie did not stray from what they were discussing and it was interesting from start to finish.
It Mixed it Up: The film included a diverse group of interviewees, including Raven Symone, Nia Long, Dr. Maya Angelou, Ice-T, Reverend Al Sharpton, girls in high school, and various people in barber shops across the country. It literally went everywhere and talked to everyone. It dealt with worldwide issues such as Indian hair and the growing market for it, shows how far these issues go. As well as the more personal effects of the problem, such as woman’s weaves destroying relationships due to money problems and a lack of intimacy.
Chris Rock: Chris Rock was a great interviewer. He did not overshadow the people, he was respectful, and added in the touches of humor when they were most needed. Bravo.
Reverend Al Sharpton: Normally we hear Al Sharpton talk about African-Americans in society and his political messages, but this time he talks about his flowly locks. Oh my, there were some amazing pictures of him in his younger days. That man had a ‘do like none other.

The Bad

Not enough Jheri curls: If you are going to talk about Black people and their hair, it is imperative you talk about the Jheri curl. There was nothing! Only one guy at the very end who had one! However, in the interview with Chris Rock, there is a whole section that talks about the Jheri curl which will hopefully be on the DVD.
Too much about the hairstyling battle: Throughout the movie, it continuously went back to the hairdressers and the show they put on at the convention in Atlanta. The movie would be in the middle of one section, then it would cut back to these four hairdressers. After a while, it really wasn’t that interesting, and the personalities were a little boring. It was just a little too much and they could have trimmed down that section.

Overall

Overall, the movie was hilarious and really informative. It might not sound like something an average person would care about, but it is fun to watch and informative. Honestly, I had no idea how much time, money, and pain went into a black woman’s hair. The only part that was a misstep was too much of the movie focused on the hairstyling battle. Otherwise, I would highly recommend it.

Rating: 7.9/10

Good Hair will be on a limited release on October 9, then in wide release on October 23
