After four years, five films, and countless castings, The Avengers have finally assembled. In less than 24 hours, anxious fans will see Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye fight side-by-side on the big screen. The Avengers Hollywood premiere took place last month, and immediately after, the cast participated in a press conference where they dished on their characters and each other.

The Avengers is here, and it’s the film Marvel has been planting the seeds for since Iron Man hits screens in 2008. In that time we’ve had films featuring Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to help get audiences in the mood and in the know about these characters. And knowing the characters is important for Joss Whedon’s film, because character development and – for the most part – motivation is kept to a minimum. You’ve got an all–star cast facing evil, and it all builds to a blockbuster conclusion. But too bad it’s such a rocky ride to get there.

Though The Hunger Games may have set the event film bar higher with its record-breaking $155 Million opening, the summer movie season is only a few weeks away and it’s going to kick off with The Avengers – which is looking to be a monster of a release. It’s not a sequel, per se, but it does bring together Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man with Mark Ruffalo‘s Hulk, Jeremy Renner‘s Hawkeye, Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor, Chris Evans‘s Captain America, and Scarlet Johansson‘s Black Widow. To get you more stoked, there’s a new featurette on the film, check it out…

With less than four months to go until the launch of the The Avengers, we’re getting all sorts of stories, pictures and rumors about the film, which has a May 4 release date. Of late, Empire Magazine has had four character-specific covers, there’s hints at what the film’s Hulk might look like, and a completely baseless rumor about a possible Marvel franchise cross-over. Take a look….

What’s Your Number? is one of those films that in the sea of Rom-Coms you just won’t remember until you stumble across it on a plane in a years time. Despite hitting all the “right” moments, having a charming leading duo and a number of good supporting actors, the film is just so damn mediocre and the script, which is attempting to be pro-female, is about 10 years out of date. Sex and the City, Friends with Benefits/No Strings Attached (in my mind they’re the same film), and Bridesmaids have already pushed the boundaries so much further for woman, that this film just falls flat and gives you literally nothing new…

Marvel studios has been building to Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers since 2008, when Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson had an end credit scene that laid out the possibility of Tony Stark working with a team. Since then we’ve seen Chris Hemsworth cast as Thor, Scarlett Johansson cast as Black Widow, Chris Evans cast as Captain America, Jeremy Renner cast as Hawkeye, and Edward Norton cast as the Hulk. Six out of seven isn’t bad. All of The Avengers save Jackson grace the latest Entertainment weekly cover, and features the new Hulk Mark Ruffalo. Check out the cover….

Chris Evans channels a new kind of hero in the new indie-drama Puncture. The fantastic premise revolves around Evan’s character Mike Weiss, a highly-functioning drug addicted lawyer, and the 800,000 or so hospital workers who are accidentally pricked by medical syringes, a year. All of these things are based on reality, making this story hard to ignore. The film is directed by brothers Adam and Mark Kassen, and played at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. Evans was great as Captain America, but here’s a film carrying a great idea, that gives Evans the chance to play an antihero, and at the same time expose the corruption of the health care industry.

This summer has brought an onslaught of comic-book movies, but the tide has turned against them. From Thor to X-Men: First Class to The Green Lantern, none of these super-expensive movies have managed to crack $200 Million at the box office, the number Superman Returns made (and that was considered a failure). Partly it’s the films, partly it’s the characters – many of whom aren’t as well known as Batman and Superman. Enter Captain America: The First Avenger. It’s a relief to say it’s entertaining, and will hopefully buck the trend. Find out more below….
