Well it is no surprise, Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen (60.0 million on the first day!!) is going to take the top spot at the box office this week. Looks like we are going to need tissues on-hand while watching Nick Cassavetes‘ film, My Sister’s Keeper starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. A young girl with leukemia and a even younger sister who is forced to donate organs in order to have her sister survive. I’m still not sure if I like the story but whatever the case, it will be a heartfelt film.

Things seem to be depressing in the movie world this week. From a sick young girl, we go to soldiers in Iraq who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat in Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker starring Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie. As if, that wasn’t bad enough we then have Cyrus Nowrasteh The Stoning of Soraya M. set in 1986 Iran.

Withall that is going on in Iran right now with the deadly protest, this film seems very fitting as we see a side of Iran that has been non-existent in films until now. Oh, and haven’t we already seen the older woman going after the younger man to the dismay of his mother (Easy Virtue)? Stephen Frears Cheri seems have the same concept.

cheri09 6 23 Behind the Scenes of Chéri

Director Stephen Frears, playwright Christopher Hampton, and actress Michelle Pfeiffer team up for the first time since Dangerous Liaisons in 1988, to bring us Chéri. The film is about an older woman (Pfeiffer) who has an an affair with her rival’s (Kathy Bates) troubled 19-year-old son Chris (Rupert Friend). Although this film comes complete with big hats, English accents, and a French background, it has the chance of being much more than just a dramatic period piece.

We’ve been hearing about this film for some time, so it’s exciting to see that it will finally be opening in LA this Friday, June 26th.

cheri09 3 19 Chéri International Trailer

Oh the English. Well, actually there are quite a few American’s in this… Oh the almost-English. I almost feel like this trailer is a parody of itself. It just seems so over the top. Although Director Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) is very good at finding the comedy in everyday situations, so perhaps it’s just the trailer and the music that is throwing me off.

The films stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates, and Rupert Friend in a romantic drama set in 1920′s Paris. The story is about “the son of a courtesan [who] retreats into a fantasy world after being forced to end his relationship with the older woman who educated him in the ways of love.”

I’m not sure what to think. Check out the trailer and let me know…
