This weekend attractive thieves and warriors will attack the box office with the help of a demon possessed teenager. Today, the heist film Takers opens nationwide and it stars Idris Elba and Paul Walker. It centers of a group of professional criminals who take on their biggest job yet at the insistence of one of their oldest enemies.

The Last Exorcism is the latest horror project produced by Eli Roth that stars Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell in a documentary style feature that centers on a faithless preacher who tries to save a girl’s soul.

It’s back! Avatar: The Special Edition is being re-released in traditional and IMAX 3D theaters for this weekend, and this weekend only. It’s an easy cash-grab for the studios who are promising 8 minutes of new footage — 8 whole minutes! Next there’s Centurion, which opens in limited release and is a war film that stars Michael Fassbender as a soldier whose regiment is accused of murder and attacked by Pict warriors. It’s based on the myth surrounding the famous Ninth Legion of Romans who disappeared in the second century.

This film deserved 75% of Eat, Pray, Love’s billboards. While A-List actors were preoccupied with making mediocre movies, this semi below the radar ensemble of fabulous Europeans teamed up with Neil Marshall for this weekend’s under-advertised release Centurion.

The Plot:

Rewind and freeze in the 2nd century during the Roman conquest of Britain. The film opens with the Roman soldiers being ambushed by Pict tribesman. There are few survivors, and their general is being held captive in a remote camp. Quintus Dias (Fassbender), a survivor and son of a legendary gladiator leads a small group of soldiers to raid the camp and rescue him. The son of a Pict leader is murdered during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict’s most skilled and vicious warriors.

The Good:

Story: This story is essentially based on the legend of the Ninth Legion and its mysterious disappearance, but instead of centering his film around the tale of the massive battle itself, Marshall chronicles the aftermath. The Pict hunt for vengeance offers plenty of gore and fast paced action – but the driving force of this film is its strongly defined characters. Marshall digs a little deeper than the physical wounds. These aren’t just a bunch of blood soaked warriors fighting for their lives – they’re human beings coping with deflated spirits, who consequently become disillusioned with the “glory” of battle.
Theme: It’s rare to find a war-related film that in no way attempts to romanticize combat. Centurion presents the realities. Surviving the initial ambush was a miracle in and of itself – and these Romans are now being tracked by the most lethal Pict warriors on the block. The stakes are high. When death is breathing down your neck is it easy to disregard all ideals of allegiance or patriotism and play every man for himself?
Cinematography: Marshall modernized the quality of his battle scenes with quick cuts and tight frames without losing a sense of time period. It was a unique juxtaposition of ancient setting and contemporary cinematography. Right on.
Female Villain: The character of Etain, the gorgeous (and completely dope) huntress leading the Pict tribe makes Lara Croft look like Polly Pocket. Olga Kurylenko is a chick who can pull off the “bad ass” situation. Victory!

The Bad:

Nothing: This is rare – but I have nothing negative to report.

Overall:

Centurion is one of the best films I’ve screened this year – you will not regret spending a buck on this movie. Go see it!

Rating: 9/10

New Posters: Tron Legacy and Centurion

Tron Legacy and Centurion don’t really have much in common but they’ve both debuted new posters this week. The Tron Legacy one sheet features a disc-yielding Jeff Bridges, who looks like he means business. While Centurion takes a more old school animated approach that reminds us of the action films of yesteryear. Check out both full sized posters below…

Tron Legacy takes place almost 30 years after the original and centers on Flynn’s (Bridges) son Sam (Garett Hedlund) who’s just as tech savvy as his father. It turns out that Kevin has been living in the world of Tron for the past 25 years, and Sam wants to find and release him. Aided by his trusted friend Quorra (Olivia Wilde), the duo embark on a life-and-death journey to escape the cyber universe that has become far more advanced and dangerous since the last time we saw it.

Tron Legacy hits theaters December 17th.

Centurion speculates on the fate of Rome’s reputedly ‘lost’ Ninth Legion, who in this take are north of Hadrian’s Wall, engaged in a bloody battle and facing a bit of trouble getting out of hostile Pict country. We get to see what happens as they try to fight for freedom behind enemy lines.

The cast is led by Michael Fassbender and Dominic West and also features former Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko. Centurion is scheduled to hit theaters on August 27, 2010.

Michael Fassbender in the Red Band Centurion Trailer

A new trailer has been released for Neil Marshall’s Centurion starring Michael Fassbender and it’s amazing! With a film of this nature, you expect plenty of blood and gore and this red band trailer gives you a hint of both. The things they do with swords and axes is a bit over the top but what else would you expect? Take a look…

How many different ways can you stab someone in the face or slice someone’s neck? It looks like this movie tries to answer that question by any means necessary. There’s a lot of blood, dirt, sweat, and bad eye make up and it looks pretty thrilling. I love gritty period pieces that feature an underdog going at it alone.

The cast is led by Fassbender and Dominic West and also features former Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko. Centurion is scheduled to hit theaters on August 27, 2010.

The first trailer has been released for the action epic, Centurion. The folks over at IGN have debuted the video that features Michael Fassbender and former Bond Girl Olga Kurylenko. It seems like we’ve been waiting forever for this film and finally some legitimate promotion has come our way. We don’t know what the big deal is, the movie looks pretty good. Take a look at the trailer…

The cinematography in this film looks amazing, but beware of the graphic violence because the trailer does show blood squirting everywhere. A pleasant surprise is Olga Kurylenko’s character, who looks like an Amazon who’s kicking ass and taking names later. It’s great to see her in a role that doesn’t require her to play a piece of eye candy.

New Centurion Photos

Where has all the promotion for this movie gone? Over at Empire they’ve posted two new photos from the Neil Marshall film, Centurion. They appear in the latest issue of the magazine, that features Sam Worthington on the cover as Perseus from Clash of the Titans. The film has Gladiator and 300 written all over it, and with a cast led by Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds), what’s not to love?

The look of this film is visually interesting. The whole blue and gray composition reminds me of a few scenes from Gladiator near the beginning, when Maximus is talking to his men.

The director describes Centurion as a western due to the parallels between this story and another major event in American history.”The Picts are like the Indians and our Romans are like the cavalry. So, a Scottish-Roman Western! Who’d have thought?!”

Centurion will hit theaters sometime next year, but no specific U.S. date has been set.

David Morrissey Talks About His Role in Centurion

Last night at the London premiere for the film, Is Anybody There, David Morrissey spilled some information to Empire about what it was like filming his upcoming mega-film Centurion directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent).

We haven’t heard much about this film since the first photo of Olga Kurylenko showed up with her as a now snow covered femme fatale whose tongue had been cut out by Romans. At that time the Director told us a little bit about her character, he said, “she’s had a hell of a time and she’s out for Roman blood.”

Now Morrissey fills us in to some of the details of his character. Check out what he has to say below…

“It’s all about the Roman legion in England, so that’s why I have a crew cut! It’s all action sequences: all I do is run around, fighting, and riding horses! My character is one of a team of seven who are trying to escape and the Scottish Picts are after us. My character is basically Michael Fassbender’s right-hand man really and that was a great job to do, very physically draining but I loved every minute of it. I love working with Michael Fassbender, he’s a great actor and someone we’ll be hearing a lot of in the future, I think he’s going to be a huge star so it was wonderful to work with him.”

For those of you who don’t know, the film is about “a splinter group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.”

All signs are pointing straight towards gory action flick! From what we’ve heard about Kurylenko and from Morrissey I think we can be assured that this film will have a lot of special effects and bloody fight scenes.

Olga Kurylenko’s First Photo From Centurion

We get a little sneak peek of Olga Kurylenko playing a now snow covered and face painted femme fatale, in Neil Marshall’s Centurion. Seems as if the she’s been a bit type casted, but the hot, brooding, bad-ass is not necessarily a bad role to be stuck in for a little while. Although this role is even more cut throat than the last.

Empire spoke with writer, Director Neil Marshall who said that her character “Etain is kind of revenge incarnate… Her family were butchered by the Romans, she had her tongue cut out by the Romans, she’s had a hell of a time and she’s out for Roman blood.”

It sure seems like Hollywood doesn’t want to give her a lot of lines, but she certainly knows how to look the part. Check out the first photo of her below…

Kurylenko agreed with her Directors sentiments saying “She’s quite furious…Because one sense is not there – she can’t speak – all the others are more developed. She sees very well and hears very well: she is an animal!”
