It looks like Universal Pictures’ Cartel simply can’t catch a break—Deadline reports that the movie, “inspired by the 1993 Italian piece La Scorta,” has been abruptly canceled by the studio just five weeks before its scheduled shoot in Mexico City. Add this to its previous troubles that included Sean Penn dropping out as the lead for “personal reasons,” and you’ve got a film cursed with the kiss of death.

A while back we reported on actor Sean Penn‘s decision to take a break from acting, which involved him dropping out of two high profile movies. One of the films in question was Cartel, a remake of the 1993 Italian film La scorta, which revolves around a clash between mob bosses and four cops as they attempt to protect a prosecutor. With Penn out, his replacement has been named, and it’s his Milk co-star Josh Brolin.

What’s eating Sean Penn? He’s not known as the most gentle soul in Hollywood, but he is known for having some serious acting chops. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing him doing what he does best for a while. According to Variety, the two-time Oscar winner has dropped out of two major film projects he was signed on to star in for Universal and MGM. The projects in question are Cartel, and the much talked about The Three Stooges.

With a nice shiny Oscar to add to his trophy case and several movies including a Three Stooges flick in the works, Sean Penn is really milking his recent success (okay- that was bad). But Penn is in talks for several more big screeners, including Cartel, a new drama scripted by Peter Craig from Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. The Milk-man himself is in talks to star as Ed Marker as he travels to protect his son after his wife is tragically murdered in an incident with Mexican cartels.

The film, which is expected to begin production by summer, is a remake of 1993 Italian film La scorta, which revolves around a clash between mob bosses and four cops as they attempt to protect a prosecutor.
