Summer officially ends this weekend as Labor Day signals that kids are going back to school, and that temperatures will begin dropping. This was a big summer for movies, with Harry Potter 7.2, Transformers 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 4 making more than a billion dollars worldwide. Much of the big money titles were franchise starters or sequels, but there were a few surprises. Check out the top ten (sorta) list…

After last weekend’s modest showing at the box office, the latest and last Harry Potter film is going to blow away the competition this weekend. This means Winnie the Pooh is going to face a blustery day, while Horrible Bosses and The Zookeeper to be left in the wind along with 4th July holiday leftovers. Check out our predictions…

After last weekend’s solid July 4th box office, Transformers: Dark Of the Moon will look to retain it’s spot on top of the box office, while Kevin James kid flick The Zookeeper, and the Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, comedy Horrible Bosses, and holiday leftovers all compete for box office dominance.
Last weekend Shia Labeouf and CO opened Transformers:Dark Of The Moon to strong box office receipts domestically and internationally. While the sequel didn’t break any box office records for the series it did receive solid cinema score grades, an increase in sales from friday-saturday, and strong weekday grosses. With no real direct completion this weekend, look for Transformers to hang on to the #1 spot.

Also new to screens this week are the Tom Hanks-directed Larry Crowne, and the tween flick Monte Carlo. That covers all four quadrants in this packed 4th of July weekend. Check our predictions…

Cars 2 may be Pixar’s first critical failure, but after a huge opening weekend, the sequel proved to be another financial success for the beloved studio. Five years ago, Cars ranked No. 1 with $60.1 million. This weekend, Cars 2 surpassed its predecessor with $68 million. A film that took us by surprise was the new Cameron Diaz‘s comedy Bad Teacher, which made a hefty debut of $31 million. Sadly, the huge superhero/comic movie Green Lantern dropped to No. 3 with a weak weekend gross of $18.3 million. Check out the numbers.

After last weekends disappointing debut, Green Lantern looks to fend off new comers Bad Teacher and The Disney Sequel in Cars 2. From Toy Story to Up Pixar is known for having the golden touch when it comes to producing movies that produce box office gold. While Cars was a solid performer it was a tad bit below in box office tallies when compared previous Pixar films. The lack of a solid family films over the past few weeks and an onslaught of marketing should help propel Cars 2 to the finish in the # 1 spot.

Well, this could get interesting—turns out that a U.K. screenwriter, Jake Mandeville-Anthony, is suing Disney and Pixar for allegedly basing Cars and its upcoming sequel, the cleverly-titled Cars 2, on his original scripts that were written and submitted in the 1990s. Reminds me of the time Michael Bay totally swiped my original filmscript, A Bunch of Lights Flash Before Some Noises Go Off and Then a Hot Chick Does Something Hot Chick-ish Near a Sports Car and Then End Credits, and turned it into a career-long series of adaptations. Not cool, Bay!
