Mr. Popper’s Penguins: Movie Review

For the past few years, every time I’ve gone to see a kids movie in the theater, I always take a moment to feel sorry for the parents in the theater. These days, taking a family of 4 to the theater can cost anywhere between $50 and $75 (Closer to $100, if you’re seeing something in IMAX or 3-D)! But then, to add insult to injury, more often than not they’ve got to sit through dreck like Alvin and the Chipmunks, or Marmaduke. Thankfully, there are a handful of movies out that are not only geared towards the satisfaction of children, but the whole family, and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey is one of them. The Story:

Tom Popper (Jim Carrey) is a real estate developer whose career is more successful than his family life. He is struggling to balance his goals of becoming a partner at his prestigious firm against staying relevant to his young son and preteen daughter. But when his world-explorer, absentee father dies, Popper inherits not one, but six live penguins that he must now care for. Though the birds initially turn his routine and tidy life upside down, they also provide him with a new opportunity to connect with his kids and ex-wife (Gugino). In order to take advantage of this second chance, Popper must keep the penguins in his penthouse apartment, hidden from his nosy neighbor (Krumholtz) and out of the hands of a zoo keeper with ulterior motives (Gregg). As the animals bring his family closer together, Popper is able to become the emotionally available father to his family that he never had himself.

The Good:

Family Comedy vs. Children’s Comedy – It’s a daunting task to write a film that’s able to connect with both children and adults. It certainly doesn’t help that each year Pixar continues to set the bar so high, with the kind of universal storytelling that resonates with literally everyone. Most family movies write off the adults in the audience, and appeal solely to children with base humor and plot lines written in crayon. That said, Mr. Popper’s Penguins does a fine job of riding the line between the two styles. The film is very character driven, and doesn’t rely on the kind of stylized humor that continues to drive, say, the Shrek series into the ground.
Jim Carrey – Carrey’s performance is charming enough to keep adults engaged with his character, and though his trademark cartoonish energy is present, it isn’t a distraction from the story at hand. The humor surrounding the penguins is mostly geared towards children (one of the penguins’ distinguishing characteristics is that he keeps bumping into walls, while another one farts incessantly), however, they’re such naturally amusing creatures that whether or not they’re real or seamlessly animated, one can’t help but enjoy their presence.
Supporting Cast – First of all, there’s Ophelia Lovibond, who plays Popper’s alliterating assistant, Pippi. This girl is absolutely adorable, and her energy and appeal carry every scene she’s in. Here’s hoping this ingenue never longs for work, because I just want to see more of her smiling on screen. But more importantly, Popper’s cast is bolstered with some great and timeless character actors who really understand their function in a film, and play not to their own strengths, but to the story’s. Angela Lansbury, with her matronly voice and manner, is a welcome presence in any family movie, and it’s nice to see her introduced to yet another generation of children. Clark Gregg’s performance is only a teensy bit more overstated than usual, but hey, he’s the bad guy in a kid’s film. It’s still a pleasure to see his polite sincerity in any film. Jeffrey Tambor and David Krumholtz fill in a few scenes. Philip Baker Hall also has a small role as Popper’s boss, and although he is probably the most under-utilized actor in the film, he’s one of those performers whose face you just like look at on camera.

The Bad:

What book? – Based on the beloved 1938 children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater, Mr. Popper’s Penguins has very little in common with its source material. Now, it’s quite understandable that this story would need to be updated for modern times and audiences, especially since one of the key elements of the book is that many people don’t even know what penguins are. However there’s a simplicity to its antiquated setting that has been a substantial part of its charm for some time now. The plot is different as well, choosing to bring the penguins closer to the family, rather than exposing them to the world. And part of the magic of the book is the fantastic notion of a troupe of traveling performing penguins. But most distinctly, all of the themes have changed as well. Rather than being a story about a man who realizes the dreams he has shelved for the sake of his family, this is a film about a man who puts puts his personal goals aside to be closer to them. It’s not an offensive departure, it’s just that if you’re looking for a nostalgic connection to your third grade summer reading list, this isn’t it.

Overall:

Although Mr. Popper’s Penguins may not provide the emotional catharsis of a Pixar film, its strong cast does a very good job of keeping it an emotionally grounded film, and strengthening its ability to connect with audiences of all ages in broad, and meaningful ways.

Rating: 7/10

Mr. Popper’s Penguins Trailer Comes From Time Warp

Mark Water‘s Mr. Popper’s Penguins trailer sets a tone, and that tone is of a family comedy from the mid 90′s. Even though the film opens on June 17 of this year, you’ve got Jim Carrey acting alongside CGI and real penguins and the trailer ends in a dance number set to Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.” It’s a movie that could have just as comfortably starred Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy back in the day, or even Carrey himself. And yet… here were are. Take a look.

The film also co-stars Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury, but this is a teaser that sells the high concept that Jim Carrey is acting with penguins. The movie is based on a children’s book, and as such they’ve likely just taken the concept and little else to stretch it into feature length.

Though Jim Carrey has done children’s films before (like The Grinch), the “acting against animals” is a long standing and terrible genre of films that has fallen upon most of the great comic actors. Mostly it’s a bad genre because it revolves around mugging and humorous encounters with animal feces. They also usually involves a father or would-be father who learns to be a better one by growing to love and take care of the animal or animals that have been foisted upon him. The genre practically writes itself.

Still, they can make money. And Jim Carrey has not a hit in a while. Perhaps the people who grew up on Ace Ventura will take their kids to this.

Sucker Punch: Movie Review

This week director Zack Snyder’s bad-ass, chick-action-flick, Sucker Punch hits theaters with a bang. Snyder described the film as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns” and there definitely is an aspect of that to the film. This is a dark, imaginative film that journey’s into the mind a young girl who needs to escape — but unlike Alice, Babyboll has a lot bigger threats than just growing up, she has to escape a mental institution before it’s too late. Sadly the film itself doesn’t follow through in terms of story, but it does manage some pretty impressive ideas. Check out our review below…

The Plot:

A young girl gets caught accidentally commiting some crimes and is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. In order to escape her fate, she retreats into her imagination and envisions a plan which will help her and her new found companions escape.

The Good:

The Look: From the flawless skin on all the girls, to the costumes, to the sets and the special effects; this film has a very distinctive look and it’s impressive. One has come to expect this from Snyder and he doesn’t disappoint on visual — though some may not like his videogame-esq special effects, there’s plenty to feast your eyes on.
All Out: I always prefer a film that takes risks and this film does. It’s great to see a director take an original idea and follow it through 100%. There’s no doubt that Snyder did that here. There is an attempt at a lot of interesting concepts in this film and there are some beautiful moments that really show you how talented Snyder is. Sadly, the whole film doesn’t hold up and that’s mainly do to the story BUT it’s hard not to appreciate and respect the effort.
The Opening: When the film hit the screen it immediately sent a wave over the audience and I couldn’t help but think “this is going to be awesome!” The start of this film, the idea, the premise, how it sets himself up is beautiful, dark, interesting — this is one of the best starts to a film. Sadly, before we can even finish the first act, things begin to fade.

The Bad:

The Story: Snyder takes a lot of risks in this film and unfortunately they don’t always add up or mean anything. You’re given this great premise and a lot of metaphorical ideas that at first seem really fascinating; but then you realize that they’re not all adding up, that things aren’t really making sense, then slowly the story starts to fall apart and you’re felt with some pretty images, and that’s about all.
The Repetitiveness: The film begins with one awesome trick and then repeats it 5 BIG times. Now this isn’t always a problem, films can repeat themselves if they’re clever about it. Sadly, unlike it’s competitor Source Code, which actually repeats itself eight times, this film doesn’t find the differences that keep you engaged while watching the same thing over and over. You need variation, in the characters, their motivation, and in tone in order to keep the story moving and give us something new to watch. The characters never really changed, only the settings. As a result it kept using the same gag just with a slightly different enemy to fight each time. It felt like five of the same short films playing back to back — mix it up!
Unbelievable Responses: The characters don’t respond like they’re human. Even under the most insane circumstances if there is not something relatable or tangible for us to hold onto, it’s hard to stay invested in the character story. The actors did their best to justify it, but even the greatest actors can’t solve plot holes that big. (Also unbelievable were the eye-lashes — I get the long lashes and excessive make-up in the brothel, but why everywhere else? This is like America’s Next Top Insane Asylum)
Casting Hamm: Though one can not get enough Hamm, he was probably the worst person in the world to cast as an evil villain that girls don’t want to have sex with. SPOILER When it’s revealed that he’s the “High Roller,” the one coming to take the young Babydoll’s virginity, one can’t help but think that women all over the country would line up for that spot. Now maybe if he was more evil or allowed to really play the villain it would work, but we barely see him in the start and in the end, he’s really not all that bad. If all we get is a sexy Jon Hamm, it’s hard to see what problem is, and if there is not problem, there’s no film.

Overall:

I can’t tell anyone not to go to this, because there are some really great aspects to this and it’s hard not to appreciate such a unique and interesting idea. That being said, it was not as enjoyable as it sound be and it definitely is no “Alice in Wonderland” story. The visuals were good, but not Snyder’s best. It’s a fun idea that’s never fully accomplished on screen.

Rating: 5/10

Carla Gugino in Elektra Luxx Movie Trailer

Do you remember Sebastian Gutierrez’s 2009 film Women in Trouble? If not, don’t feel bad because a lot of people don’t. The film had a limited release but a huge cast, which was led by Carla Gugino. She played a legendary porn star named Elektra Luxx, and now almost two years later, she’s back in her own self-titled sequel. Check out the official trailer for the film that’s just been released…

The film features several returning actors from the original, as well as a few new faces including our personal favorite Timothy Olyphant. That man can do no wrong in our eyes! We also love how they’ve expanded Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s part. In the first movie he had more of a cameo than a full supporting role.

Synopsis:

Recently retired from the adult film industry, superstar Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino) is pregnant with the child of late rock star Nick Chapel. She is trying to make ends meet by teaching a community college sex education class aimed at housewives when a figure from her past, flight attendant Cora (Marley Shelton), approaches her with a proposition. In exchange for the (stolen) lyrics to Nick Chapel’s last record, all of which is about Elektra, Cora needs Elektra to seduce her fiancee. Elektra reluctantly agrees to do this favor, setting in motion a series of hilarious events which will see her come face to face with detectives, sex bloggers, emotionally unstable neighbors and the Virgin Mary herself as she wrestles with the prospect of motherhood and tries to become a person of substance.

Elektra Luxx is due out in theaters on March 11.

Watch: Interview with Carla Gugino for Every Day

If you’re lucky enough to live in LA or NY you’ll be able to catch Carla Gugino in her latest role in writer/director Richard Levine’s film Every Day. She co-stars as the sexy temptress that woes Live Schreiber’s character with her free spirit and sexy writing styles — if only every writer had hot care-taker to see them through a project the writing world would be a much happier place. If you’re not lucky enough to see it on the big screen, have no fear! The film is also being released onto VOD (Video on Demand) at the exact same time! Isn’t it great to see independent film being given new wings?

We had a chance to sit down with the lovely and talented Gugino to talk to her a little bit more about making this film, working with Levine and Schreiber, and of course, why Independent film is soaring right now. Check it out…

SYNOPSIS:

From the outside, it looks like Ned (LIEV SCHREIBER) has a perfect life – a lovely wife, Jeannie (HELEN HUNT), two healthy sons, a high-paying job as a television writer and a beautiful home. But cracks are starting to show around the edges. Ned’s oldest son, Jonah, (EZRA MILLER) is 15, and wants a lot more independence than Ned is comfortable with. Jeannie’s grumpy father, Ernie, (BRIAN DENNEHY) has come to live with them, and Jeannie is quickly becoming overwhelmed by her father’s constant demands and negative outlook. Ned’s boss, Garrett, (EDDIE IZZARD) isn’t liking any of Ned’s writing, contributing to Ned’s crisis of confidence and general discontent with the circumstances of his life.

So when Garrett suggests that Ned work with his sexy colleague Robin (CARLA GUGINO) to improve his script ideas, Ned jumps at the chance to get out of the house and away from his routine. Beautiful and fun-loving, Robin lives life to the fullest, with champagne and moonlight swims in her private indoor pool. Robin quickly lets Ned know she’s interested in more than just working with him, and, Ned intoxicated by her charm and the freedom of her lifestyle, knows he is treading on dangerous territory.

Every Day: Movie Review

Are you in the mood for a film about average folks, with average problems that are amplified on the big screen? If your answer is yes, then you’ll probably be in the mood for Every Day. It’s a dramedy from writer-director Richard Levine that centers on the ups and downs of an every day family. These people could be your neighbors, your friends, they could even be you!

The Good:

Relatable Characters/Themes: These characters represent the “everyday” people – the people we know. There’s nothing remotely heightened or embellished about who they are as individuals or the conflicts they face. This movie has you nodding your head not because you agree with what’s on screen but because you genuinely feel for it.
Performances: Across the board they’re very honest, subtle performances by everyone – even the kids, which is rare.

The Good/Bad:

“Every Day:” It’s a perfect title for this film because it very much highlights an “every day” lifestyle among “every day” people. There is a “peak” in the story, but it doesn’t feel like your average climax. The movie feels more like a series of events stocked with your typical ups and downs. I appreciate this kind of story telling because it’s risky- why? Because making a movie without the exciting characters and dramatics reduces its commercial appeal. But, clearly this director was more committed to making something real that audiences could relate to.

The Bad:

Not Memorable: I’d like to think that normal characters and a normal story can still make for a memorable film. Unfortunately, Every Day just feels average. There is nothing particularly gripping about the story and more importantly, it doesn’t leave the audience with anything they’ll think about after leaving the theater.

Overall:

Every Day isn’t horrendous but it’s definitely not worth your money. Check out something else this weekend.

Move over Tooth Fairy and The Game Plan, Dwayne Johnson is ready to step back into the hardcore action genre. This week the actor appears in the George Tillman Jr. film Faster. He channels his inner Steve McQueen and plays a man on a deadly mission for revenge. Nothing and no one will get between him and his targets. It’s just him, an old school car, a revolver, and the unlucky suckers who have targets on their backs.

The Plot:

Faster is a vigilante action flick that centers on 3 characters: Driver (Johnson), Killer (Jackson-Cohen) and Cop (Thornton). After serving 10 years in prison (for robbery), Driver is released and goes on a killing spree to avenge the death of his brother who was murdered after a heist gone wrong. Killer is the assassin sent after Driver to stop his murderous rampage, and Cop is trying to bring them both (Killer and Driver) to justice.

The Good:

The Action: Just as you might suspect, Faster is a gritty tale that features one man, one gun, and a whole lot of dead bodies. The reason the action in the film is so great is because it’s REAL. There’s no CGI so every stunt, explosion, and car chase is legit. It’s a refreshing change of pace in a world where green screen effects dominate the medium.
Cinematography: Faster has a vintage look. There’s a graininess to the picture that adds an old school 70s feel to the movie, which makes it stand out.
The Plot: The set up for Faster mimics The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. It centers on three basic characters (with no real names or identities) who each have an objective that eventually intersects at the end of the film. It’s very straight to the point but just when you think you’ve got the story figured out you’re blindsided by an amazing twist! I won’t spoil it for you but it’s pretty cool.

The Bad:

The Dialogue: Since the movie relies heavily on action, don’t expect the dialogue to be akin to Shakespeare. One of the worst lines in the film comes from Jennifer Carpenter’s character who shouts, ” I know what you’re doing. I hope you kill them. I hope you kill them all!” Who says that out loud for everyone to hear? Movie characters that’s who. We can’t be that surprised by her lack of tact, this is the same movie where Driver walks into an operating room and kills a man while he’s on the table. Discretion isn’t a valued trait in this film.

Overall:

Faster is more than what meets the eye. It’s gory and abrasive but also has an interesting plot twist that you never see coming. If you want to spend the holiday getting your socks knocked off by some over the top action, Faster is the film for you!

Rating: 8/10

Leslie Mann Joins Change-Up, Carla Gugino Cast in Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Two actresses have been cast in two very different comedies that feature some well known actors. Leslie Mann has landed a role in the upcoming Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman film The Change-Up, while Carla Gugino has been cast in Mr. Popper’s Penguins alongside Jim Carrey. Who will play what? Find out below…

The Change-Up is another take on the old school body-swap story that we’ve all seen so many times. In the film, Bateman plays a family man who accidentally swaps bodies with his best friend, a single slacker actor played by Reynolds. Each gets a glimpse at what he missed, and an appreciation of what he had. Mann has been cast as the female lead according to Variety, but no specifics have been released regarding her character.

As for Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the film centers on a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. As he gets acquainted with – and increasingly attached to – his winged roommates, Popper’s life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he’s long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail. Gugino has also been cast in an unspecified role (what’s up with that?) but sources say she’s landed the part of Mrs. Popper.

Official Trailer for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch!

It’s here! After giving you a sneak peek at the first trailer for Warner Bros’ Sucker Punch, the footage has been released online. It’s popped up on Apple Trailers and it has all the ass-kicking, gun-shooting, fighter-plane action that you could ask for. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and has been described as Alice in Wonderland with machine guns. It’s time to see if the movie actually lives up to the tagline. Check out the trailer…

Official Plot Synopsis:

Set in the 1950s, Sucker Punch follows Babydoll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

As you can see from the trailer, Snyder continues to use that glossy, heavily airbrushed look in his films. The same dark colors with high contrast and special effects. The film looks to have a similar aesthetic as Watchmen and 300. I’m starting to think that his Dawn of the Dead remake is going to continue to be the only live action film in his arsenal that wasn’t mostly shot in front of a green screen.

Sucker Punch hits theaters on March 25, 2011. The same month Watchmen and 300 were released. Another coincidence? I think not!

Who’s ready to watch Alice in Wonderland with machine guns?! It may sound crazy but that’s how director Zack Snyder has described his latest live action film Sucker Punch. The movie’s main characters are all female, including a talented actress Snyder has already worked with in the past. At the official Comic-Con press conference for the film the director along with stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen), Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, and Emily Browning were all in attendance.

Comic-Con 2010: Sucker Punch To Be PG-13? Snyder Confirms Xerxes

The cast of Zack Snyder’s female dominated action flick Sucker Punch took over Comic-Con with their official Hall H panel and those in attendance were lucky enough to see some cool footage. We also discovered some interesting news regarding Snyder’s plans for the film and his next project. Find out the dirt below…

Snyder came out first and talked about how excited he was to be at Comic-Con again (the usual). He took over the moderator’s job and decided to introduce the cast members which included Carla Gugino, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Emily Browning. They all introduced themselves and talked a bit about their characters in the film.

After the intro, they showed the first trailer for the film, which we gave an in depth description of in our first look. After that, Snyder spoke a bit about his next project, Xerxes, the follow up/spin-off to 300. He’s currently co-writing the screenplay right now and is definitely doing the movie.

Before they left he also let us know that he thinks Sucker Punch will be rated PG-13 (gasp!). We know it sounds crazy but he honestly thinks it might happen. He said that the ratings board gave Lord of the Rings a PG-13 and they cut monster’s heads off so why not? Sucker Punch also has the same kind of fantastical element to it so it could be possible.

Carla Gugino Replaces Salma Hayek in Faster

Carla Gugino is set to star opposite her Race to Witch Mountain co-star Dwayne Johnson in the action flick Faster. She will be replacing Salma Hayek who was originally cast as the female lead in the film that will mark Johnson’s return to darker material. As of late he’s been doing more family oriented projects, but Faster is a different kind of animal.

The story for Faster centers on an ex-con hell bent on avenging his brothers death. Johnson will play a character named Driver, while Billy Bob Thornton will star as a veteran cop who trails him as he races to settle with those responsible for his brother’s murder. Also in the mix is Killer, an egocentric hitman who’s after Driver. According to Variety, Gugino has been hired to step in to star as a detective on Driver’s trail who’s trying to wrap up a decade old case.

Faster is directed by George Tillman Jr. and also stars Maggie Grace and Moon Bloodgood. There are a lot of women being added to this cast, which is rare in a big action movie. If Gugino’s a cop, I’m assuming one of the other actresses will be a love interest, and the other could be a villain of some sort. Just throwing that out there.
