Last week we announced a slew of actresses who were in the running to play the female lead in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Some of the women included Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Rachel Hall, Keira Knightley, and Scarlett Johansson but according to Vulture another British actress has found herself at the head of the pack. Carey Mulligan has become the current front runner to play Daisy Buchanan.

Noomi Rapace continues her invasion of Hollywood with another potential project. A few weeks ago we learned that she was cast as the female lead in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2, now there’s word that she might be in the running for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel. The last time we checked Gemma Arterton was said to be a candidate, but if we had to choose between her and Rapace, we’d go with Rapace. She’s just looks more badass (see photo above).

wall street 2 trailer 28 1 10 kc Wall Street Money Never Sleeps: Movie Review

Oliver Stone returns to the big screen with the long awaited sequel to his 1980s hit Wall Street. Money Never Sleeps takes place during the 2008 recession and follows a new and younger group of Wall Street traders. The film doesn’t try to copy the original as much as you might think. Yes, there’s the mentoring of an up and comer by a devious veteran but it also tackles the politics and corruption present in the new millennium. Money Never Sleeps opens a whole new bag of worms.

Carey Mulligan 19 9 10 kc Interview: Carey Mulligan for Wall Street Money Never Sleeps

Carey Mulligan is on a roll. Over the past two years, the actress has landed one meaty part after another, with one of them resulting in a prestigious Oscar nomination (An Education). This fall she has two films opening within a week of each other, Never Let Me Go and the highly anticipated sequel Wall Street Money Never Sleeps. The actress has worked with some heavy hitters in her day but Michael Douglas‘ Gordon Gekko is a different kind of monster.

In Money Never Sleeps, Mulligan plays his estranged daughter Winnie Gekko, a young journalist who runs an alternative website that focuses on exposing corruption in politics and big business — she’s the antithesis of her dad in every sense of the word. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mulligan in a one-on-one interview, where we discussed her experience working alongside Douglas and being under the direction of Oliver Stone. She also spoke about her future goals and whether or not she’d ever tackle a comedy (paging Russell Brand).

Saoirse Ronan is really starting to turn into an untrustworthy character actress. She played a lying manipulator in Joe Wright’s Atonement, she’s also the lead in his upcoming assassin film Hanna, and now she’s getting locked and loaded for another drama called Violet & Daisy. According to Variety, Ronan and James Gandolfini will team up in the film that centers on a couple of “hit girls.”

A couple weeks ago it was announced that Carey Mulligan was in negotiations to star in the action film Drive alongside Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston. At the time, the film was said to center on “a nameless Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a freelance getaway driver but ends up on the run with a contract on his head and an ex-con’s girlfriend.” I recently spoke to Mulligan about her part in the film and she elaborated more on her character and revealed that she’s not just playing “a girlfriend.”

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a faded memory for Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan. She was once a contender for the sought after role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s American adaptation of the book. She lost out to newcomer Rooney Mara, and is looking for other projects to occupy her time. According to THR, she’s in talks to star in a film called Drive opposite Ryan Gosling and “Breaking Bad’sBryan Cranston.

carey mulligan 3 30 10 Interview: Carey Mulligan for The Greatest

Once again, we had the chance to sit down to a roundtable (which was so small it was more of a gathering with 15 minute conversation) with the lovely and talented Carey Mulligan for her role alongside Pierce Brosnan (read interview) and Susan Sarandon in first time director Shana Feste’s film The Greatest.

Much like in her breakthrough role in An Education, Mulligan gives a performance that wins your attention. Although she plays a quite a different character than “Jenny”, she has the same natural presence in front of the camera that she did for her Oscar worthy performance, which to me answered the question many people were asking “is she just being herself in front of the camera or is she that good?” There is something about her that is so simple and yet malleable about her work that there’s no other way to describe it, she is pure talent.

So lets take a look at our little chat with Mulligan where we talk about The Greatest, making it through award seasons and what’s next…
