Despite the fact that it’s taking a classic piece of American literature and turning it into a 3-D film, Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby might not be quite as horrible as we first thought. Of course, I’m basing this opinion simply on a few photos that have leaked out from the set, but, that said, these do seem to capture, in their own small way, the mood and tone of the book.

Of course, these pics should look good, as the film’s budget is over $100 million and features a cast that’s pretty easy on the eye. That said, there’s still no indication if this film will actually be any good, or if there is any real reason for it to be filmed in 3-D besides simple gimmickry.

The Great Gatsby tells the story of Nick Carraway, a young writer who moves to New York in 1922, and comes under the sphere of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire, and his cousin, Daisy. The film adaptation, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan, is set for a Christmas 2012 release.

Carey Mulligan is one busy girl. She’s filming The Great Gasby, she’s got Drive in theaters, and her new movie Shame is about to be released. Now, she’s locked in her next role with some very prominent directors. This week also saw the release of new trailer and clips including, Madonna‘s second directorial effort W.E. and the Twilight wedding. We’ve complied a list of news bits just for you, you know, so you won’t feel out of the entertainment loop.

Carey Mulligan Meet The Coen Brothers: Variety reports that Carey Mulligan has landed the lead role in the next Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis. She’ll reunite with fellow Drive actor Oscar Isaac, who will play a musician trying to make it in the Greenwich Village music scene in the 60s. This is fantastic news.

Life After “Desperate Housewives”: After eight seasons, “Desperate Housewives” is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean its creator, Marc Cherry, is out of a job. Cherry is working on another female ensemble soap called “Devious Maids.” The show is being adapted from the Mexican drama “Ellas son… La Alegria del Hogar” (“They are… The Happiness of the Home”), about a group of Beverly Hills maids. Seems like a good fit for Cherry.

Justin Bieber: Justin Bieber‘s rendition of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town’ is going to be featured in the upcoming holiday movie Arthur Christmas. His version will play during the end credits, and there will be music video too. Hey, to those of you who dig the Biebz, this is probably exciting news. His entire holiday album Under The Mistletoe will hit stores November 1.

Angels Crest: Jeremy Piven stars in a new indie drama entitled Angels Crest, about the disappearance of a 3-year-old boy that divides a tightly knit community. You can check out the trailer below to get a better idea and feel on the movie which feels something like Winter’s Bone. Magnolia bought Angels Crest after it premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, and is releasing it through VOD on November 25.

Madonna: Pop Icon Madonna is giving directing another shot. Her sophomore attempt is the romantic drama W.E., which tells two stories. The first focuses on the affair between King Edward VIII and the American divorcee Wallis Simpson, and the second about a married woman and a Russian security guard. so far the film is getting mixed reviews, but take a look at the brand new trailer below and judge it for yourself.

The Twilight Wedding: And lastly, we have Twilight. The first half of the last film is almost here, and the video clips are coming in. Below we have a nice video of the actors talking about the wedding scene, and also some new footage of the actual event. This holy matrimony isn’t just a big deal to Twihards, but also the actual actors playing the characters apparently.

Get ready for Drive. The modern 80′s-esq, dramatic, action film about a driver who knows how to do one thing damn well. From the unique characters, to the stellar performances across the board, this risky film sets its unique tone from the start and carries it through to the bitter end. With its risky style of shooting, to the willfully strong perspective of the director, this film is one to see and one that will surely win awards in the coming months. There’s no doubt that this is your best pick for the weekend, possibly the year…

Video Review:

The Players:

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn (Watch Interview)

Writers: Hossein Amini (screenplay), James Sallis (book)

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman

Cinematography By: Newton Thomas Sigel

Original Music By: Cliff Martinez

The Plot:

A Hollywood stunt performer moonlights as a wheelman with a few simple rules. He attempts to live a simple life until a girl gets in the way, and sets him up for a heist gone wrong.

The Good:

Hand Acting: Many actors today act for the close up, they perform with their eyes and leave it at that. Ryan Gosling acts through his entire body. You can feel his sadness, happiness, rage, everywhere from his head to his toes, but most memorably, his hands. Despite the fact that Winding Refn told us in an interview that he intentionally played up the sound of Goslings gloves to help the effect, Gosling literally puts his emotions through his body which shows in his brilliant limb acting abilities,

Bryan Cranston: Though numerous members of the supporting cast deserve award nods (Ron Pearlson, Albert Brooks, Carey Mulligan), for me Bryan Cranston steals the show. He plays his character like the best of them and literally was able to manipulate the audience like they were putty in his hands. Majestic performance, truly.

The 80′s Are Back: Though it’s completely unrealistic and sometimes distracting (seeing as the film is set in present day), I absolutely loved that almost everything in this film had a sprinkle, dash, or was flat out drenched in 80′s. It bleeds the era from it’s hot pink title-card, to Goslings white jacket, to the soundtrack, you’ll be running out of the theaters to buy the music. It’s a brave choice and one I questioned, but in the end, it was a great move made by a brave director.

The Bad:

The Women: This is not a great film for women. They never really get a chance to stand up for themselves, they work mainly as reasons for the plot to progress. Though the performances were great, it would have been nice to see the ladies being given a little bit more to do.

Few Bad Connections: There are some scenes that don’t really add up, aren’t really needed, were obviously shot because they looked cool, action scenes that probably couldn’t happen — I can see the problems and have heard peoples complaints, but honestly, who really gives a fuck? I forgave the film or rather didn’t even care enough to give the faults the time of day to distract me from enjoying every moment. I can’t deny that these things were there, but chances are, that unless you’re a filmmaker, you’ll hardly notice anything and really won’t care.

Overall:

I can easily recommend this film to anyone who loves cars, 80′s music, an innovative story, fascinating characters and/or Ryan Gosling — which should cover a lot of ground. Though it’s a critic-favorite and getting a ton of buzz (and rightly so) there are some aspects to the film that people will have issues with. The film does have some holes and problems that don’t really add up — but what can I say, I had such a goddamn fun time getting from A-to B-both times I watched the film that I can’t fault it for the small things. It’s packed with great performances and is not like any other film you will see this year, or possibly this decade. Take a chance on this bad-boy, it’s more than worth your trip to the theater and even if you don’t like it, you won’t be bored.

Rating: 8.5/10

Drive hits theaters September 15, 2011.

After a career changing two years, Carey Mulligan is ready to leave Hollywood to focus on theater. The British actress is set to appear in the play Through a Glass Darkly, on the New York stage. Mulligan actually began her career doing plays and musicals, and this run will give her the opportunity to go back to her roots.

According to Yahoo, Through a Glass Darkly is a stage adaptation of the 1961 Ingmar Bergman film of the same name. In the production she “will play an intense young woman harrowed by psychiatric illness who spirals out of control while on holiday off the coast of Sweden with her husband, novelist father and brother.” Crazy Carey Mulligan? We’re in!

As we stated earlier, Mulligan’s love of theater predates her work as a film actress.

“I’m more consumed by theater than I am by film,” she says. “I never set out really to be a film actress. I love it and I’m incredibly lucky, but I find it easier to throw myself into a play than film. I’m always much more self-aware and self-conscious when I’m doing film because cameras really freak me out.”

We’re sure she can successfully take on both mediums. We love her in movies, but her stage performances are also a treat. Through a Glass Darkly, will run at the New York Theater Workshop in the East Village from May 13 to July 3.

What do you think of Mulligan taking on this role? Do you think she’s better on stage or in film?

The cast of Steve McQueen’s latest feature Shame just picked up an Oscar nominee. According to Variety, Carey Mulligan has joined the film alongside Michael Fassbender who will play the lead. Mulligan has been on a roll as of late, she recently landed the coveted part of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

Official Synopsis:

Brandon (Michael Fassbender, Inglourious Basterds, Hunger, A Dangerous Method) is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control.

From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.

Mulligan will play Fassbender’s sister Sissy, which should be an interesting combination. Both individuals are very talented. We can’t wait to see how they work off one another with such intense material.

On a side note, James Badge Dale (“The Pacific) has also joined the film in the role of Fassbender’s boss.

What do you think of Mulligan joining the cast of Shame? Do you think she is the right choice?

Carey Mulligan is one busy bee. The Oscar nominated actress just landed the coveted role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and now she’s been confirmed to star in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s latest film. The actress alongside veteran female lead, Jodie Foster have been tapped to star in Stoker.

Stoker will mark Chan-wook’s English language debut in Hollywood, and the pressure is on. The film will center on “a young woman whose eccentric uncle comes back into her life after the death of her father.” He really has a thing for movie’s about unconventional familial relationships doesn’t he? If you haven’t seen Oldboy yet, just know that it goes to the darkest place you could imagine.

According to 24 Frames, Stoker is being produced by Ridley and Tony Scott’s company and is based on a screenplay written by Wentworth Miller. The same Wentworth Miller who spent four years on the Fox series, “Prison Break.” The actor majored in English Literature in college so we shouldn’t be that surprised that he’s started to write scripts. Mulligan will play the young woman, and Foster will appear in an unspecified role, while the uncle has yet to be cast.

What do you think about the line up for Chan-wook’s Stoker?

It didn’t take long for director Baz Luhrmann to get Carey Mulligan on board with his adaptation of the literary classic, The Great Gatsby. Last week we reported that Mulligan had rose to the top of the shortlist of actresses who were in the running for the part of Daisy Buchanan, when Scarlett Johansson became unavailable. Today, the director confirmed to Deadline that Mulligan is his Daisy.

In a statement to Deadline Luhrmann said,

“Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world’s most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: “Hello, Daisy Buchanan.”

As we previously reported:

In late December it was announced that Luhrmann would helm The Great Gatsby. The book was previously adapted in 1974 with Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, and Bruce Dern playing the three main roles. This incarnation could feature Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire as the male leads Jay Gatsby and narrator Nick Carraway.

Sources claim that Johansson was very much in the lead to play Daisy, but casting hit a roadblock when she accepted a part in Cameron’s Crowe upcoming film, We Bought a Zoo. It begins production in late spring of next year, while Gatsby is expected to start filming in the summer. She was Luhrmann’s first choice but since the film’s schedules will conflict Mulligan is the next in line.

What do you think of Mulligan taking on the role of Daisy Buchanan?

Noomi Rapace continues her invasion of Hollywood with another potential project. A few weeks ago we learned that she was cast as the female lead in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2, now there’s word that she might be in the running for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel. The last time we checked Gemma Arterton was said to be a candidate, but if we had to choose between her and Rapace, we’d go with Rapace. She’s just looks more badass (see photo above).

According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox and director Ridley Scott have had general meetings with several actresses for the lead in the prequel but no one has been nailed down. Sources claim that Rapace is a real possibility for the part, seeing that talks between her and the studio have been ongoing. She actually met with them prior to her casting in Sherlock Holmes 2

Other actresses said to be in the running for the film include Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish. We’re not sure what type of characterization they’re going for but if this woman is supposed to be a badass like Ripley, Rapace would be the best choice. Cornish has also had her fair share of strong roles, with the upcoming Sucker Punch being one of them. We haven’t had the opportunity to see Mulligan in anything horror or action oriented so this would be a first for her.

Who do you think should be cast in the role?

Oliver Stone returns to the big screen with the long awaited sequel to his 1980s hit Wall Street. Money Never Sleeps takes place during the 2008 recession and follows a new and younger group of Wall Street traders. The film doesn’t try to copy the original as much as you might think. Yes, there’s the mentoring of an up and comer by a devious veteran but it also tackles the politics and corruption present in the new millennium. Money Never Sleeps opens a whole new bag of worms.

The Players:

Director: Oliver Stone

Screenwriters: Allan Loeb, Stephen Schiff, Oliver Stone and Stanley Weiser (characters)

Cast: Shia Labeouf, Michael Douglas, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin, Frank Langella, Eli Wallach, Susan Sarandon

Cinematography: Rodrigo Prieto

Original Music By: Craig Armstrong

The Plot:

Money Never Sleeps is set 20 years after the first film and centers on a young Wall Street trader named Jacob Moore (Labeouf), who gets taught some hard lessons in the business. After emerging from his stint in prison, Gordon Gekko has become a popular author and media expert on all things financial. He’s also Jacob’s future father-in-law who helps him take down the corrupt bank CEO, Bretton James (Brolin). In exchange for his services, Moore has to help Gekko repair his estranged relationship with his daughter Winnie (Mulligan). He soon discovers that playing with money is like playing with greed and greed isn’t good, it’s evil.

The Good:

The Cast: Money Never Sleeps is filled with a cast of Oscar winners and nominees led by the cool and collected Michael Douglas. Every actor elevates the other’s performance, which makes the film more watchable and more entertaining. LaBeouf may seem like an odd choice for such a dramatic role but he really brings it and proves that he can hang with the big dogs.

The Cinematography: New York City is shown in the way that would make any outsider jealous. It’s shot beautifully with the architecture being somewhat of a secondary character in the film.

The Wardrobe: All of the characters have money and we can tell. Their dressed from head to toe in the most expensive and tailored clothes. You will walk out of the theater with a sudden desire to hit the mall. The film makes you not only want to look good, but powerful as well.

The Set Design: Everything from the Wall Street offices, to the lofts, to the mansions are crafted with such detail. The set designers make sure that every nook and cranny tells a story about the characters and they do!

Carey Mulligan: Earlier I noted the cast but Mulligan’s performance deserves to be called out. Her portrayal as the long suffering daughter of Gekko and fiancee of Jacob is the heart and soul of the film. She’s the glue that holds both men together whether they realize it or not, and when she breaks the viewer does as well. That’s how good she is.

The Bad:

The Length: The only bad thing about the film is its length. The last 15 minutes could have been cut out. The story seems to have a natural resolve at a certain point but then it throws you a curve ball that then has to be played out. Unfortunately, by that time you’re ready for everything to wrap up.

Overall:

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps is a pleasant surprise. It’s not better than the original but it’s a solid stand alone film.

Rating: 8/10

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps opens in theaters nationwide on September 24th.

Carey Mulligan is on a roll. Over the past two years, the actress has landed one meaty part after another, with one of them resulting in a prestigious Oscar nomination (An Education). This fall she has two films opening within a week of each other, Never Let Me Go and the highly anticipated sequel Wall Street Money Never Sleeps. The actress has worked with some heavy hitters in her day but Michael Douglas‘ Gordon Gekko is a different kind of monster.

In Money Never Sleeps, Mulligan plays his estranged daughter Winnie Gekko, a young journalist who runs an alternative website that focuses on exposing corruption in politics and big business — she’s the antithesis of her dad in every sense of the word. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mulligan in a one-on-one interview, where we discussed her experience working alongside Douglas and being under the direction of Oliver Stone. She also spoke about her future goals and whether or not she’d ever tackle a comedy (paging Russell Brand).

Check out the interview…

How do you go from An Education to playing the daughter of Satan in a suit?

Carey Mulligan: Good question! I don’t know. It was completely mental. You know I got a phone call from Oliver Stone asking me to come to LA and read the script. He had seen An Education so for some reason he equated that with Wall Street. Very strange, but lucky for me. That was the first time I hadn’t had to audition for a job, which is rare. So I went out and met him and read the scenes and said yes pretty much right away. But it was sort of out of nowhere and it’s the first time that could have happened. I’ve never even been called up by a director before.

Did you meet Michael shortly after or did you guys do the method thing where you didn’t speak because you’re estranged in the movie?

CM: Well, we did that to an extent, but we rehearsed together. We did rehearse because we had to figure out so much stuff. When he was invented, she wasn’t in the first film, so we had to make up her whole life really. So me and Michael and Oliver sat down with three weeks of rehearsal and we used a lot of that time to figure out their relationship and how much time they spent apart. And then when we were shooting, we did keep a distance. We weren’t sort of hanging out off set. And we kind of both knew that’s what we had to do. It wasn’t deliberate, like “I’m not going to talk to you for three months.” It was just sort of staying away. It helped scenes. If we had been very fond of each other off set, those scenes would have been much harder to play, so we just sort of kept a discreet distance.

If your character Winnie dislikes her father and what he does so much, why is she dating someone in the exact same field?

CM: I know. Well, there’s kind of a Freudian thing going on where it’s like you date your father and all that insanity. There’s also, you know, the fact that you can’t really help who you fall in love with. In the beginning of the film, he is the best version of a Wall Street trader. He’s ambitious and he’s in that world, but he’s using his skills and he’s using that world to make this great energy thing happen. He’s trying to use it for good. It doesn’t sit easily with her and she doesn’t enjoy the company of the people who are in that world. Especially that ball that she goes to, she’s sitting with him and Bretton. He’s the devil to her. And she’s irritated because he’s sort of charming and she doesn’t want to be charmed by him. So that whole world is kind of not something that she’s comfortable with. But if anything Jake is the best version of a Wall Street trader. He’s trying to do something positive, so I think that’s how she kind of reconciles it with herself.

I don’t think she hates her father because whenever there’s an emotional scene, and you guys are going at it I see more hurt than anger. How does she, from your perspective feel about her father?

CM: Just completely abandoned, you know. I think she just wishes that things could have been different. It’s more of the pain of like life could have been so much better and so different had he been there. I think she’s convinced herself, whether it’s true or not, that if he had been around and he hadn’t been in prison, her brother wouldn’t have killed himself. That if he had been around, he wouldn’t have gone off the tracks and started taking drugs and fucking around with other people. He would have been there. And that’s the pain of it. It’s more that she felt like she just lost her father. And it’s less to do with the crimes that he committed and all that stuff. I mean that’s painful, but that’s forgivable. The fact that he wasn’t there was sort of the ultimate pain for her. Her whole life was altered by him going to prison and losing her brother, which is something she’ll never recover from.

How was it to be directed by Oliver Stone?

CM: It’s great. You know, I heard all the crazy Oliver Stone stories before I signed on. And I was nervous, but I never saw a negative side to Oliver. He’s kind of awesome. He’s just the most unique person I have ever met. And also one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. He’s so, so clever and so knowledgeable about everything: politics and finance and current events. He really knows everything. And he was really supportive. He treated me kind of like one of the boys. He didn’t really coddle me and treat me like a girl particularly. He was really focused on the work. He was insightful and he knew the script back to the front. He also knew our backstory that we invented and so every time I had a struggle with anything, he would just bring me back to the story. And that’s kind of how I like to work. I like somebody who lets me basically do what I want, but keeps me on the right track and doesn’t let me go off into completely terrible territory.

What do you think Stone is trying to say with Money Never Sleeps that he didn’t touch on in the original Wall Street?

CM: I think he never would have made it unless there’s something to say. There were two things. I think he wanted to articulate what happened in 2008 in an accessible way, and the way of doing that is to make a family drama and surrounding it with the crash. And also, I understand it better than I did before, and that’s sort of one of the key things about it. It is about greed and the same things that got us into trouble last time are the things that cause the crash this time. But it’s sort of imbued with a little bit of hope this time. It’s sort of trying to say that there has to be another way, that capitalism or just accruing wealth… It will constantly come back to this problem if we continue like that, so we need to find ways to get out of that system or make things better.

Were you on set the day that Charlie Sheen did his cameo?

CM: Yes. Everybody came in that day early to watch that happen. I mean everybody was behind the monitors like: “What? This is crazy!” Yeah so everyone was there. We were so excited. It took like two hours to shoot. I just wanted to watch him. I couldn’t believe he was in the room. It’s an awesome reveal.

I know that you’re British but you play an American in the film and you did a great job with your accent. Who was your dialect coach?

CM: Tim Monich was my accent coach. He’s sort of one of the best in the country, I mean if not the best, basically. And he made me tapes and he wrote out my script in phonetics and we had coaching sessions together throughout the filming and he was on set everyday listening in and kind of nudging me in the right direction here and there. You know, I didn’t want it to sort of dominate. If it was distracting, if I started thinking more about the accent than the scene, then I would just forget the accent and just fix it afterward. Especially in sort of big dramatic scenes, I would say to Oliver like, “If I go into English, just let me and I’ll fix it when they dub it later.” Which didn’t happen that much, I think we fixed like one or two lines in the edit. Most of the time, I kind of felt all right. It’s difficult. It’s like wearing a veil. You feel like you can’t quite see people properly. I didn’t want it to detract. And I think the truth of the character was more important and if the accent suffered a little bit then it wasn’t a huge problem.

You’ve been very busy over the past few years. Never Let Me Go was released on the 15th and Wall Street will open on the 24th and then when you’re done promoting, you’re going to shoot Drive. After that what’s your plan?

CM: Holiday [laughs]. No I’m doing a play next year on Broadway, which is an Ingmar Bergman film that’s been adapted for the stage called Through the Glass Darkly, which is sort of a weird play set in Sweden.

When did that come out?

CM: Oh, decades ago, I think, its an old old film. A 70s film. They did it in London just recently and then its just sort of transferring to Broadway and they’re recasting it, so hopefully do that, we don’t have a director yet but that’s the plan.

You’ve done stage work prior to films, is that where your career began?

CM: Yeah, mainly in London but I did a play on Broadway as well.

You’ve done a lot of drama thus far, could you see yourself in a comedy?

CM: Yeah, maybe I’ll give it a go, I don’t know. If I was going to do it, it would be something that had a heart to it.

When was the last time you laughed at something and was like, “Oh, this is hilarious!?”

CM: I actually thought Get Him To The Greek was really funny, I don’t think many people saw it. I thought it was hysterical.
