Summer officially ends this weekend as Labor Day signals that kids are going back to school, and that temperatures will begin dropping. This was a big summer for movies, with Harry Potter 7.2, Transformers 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 4 making more than a billion dollars worldwide. Captain America has topped Harry’s huge success and taken the No. 1 spot at the box office. We did not see that one coming. Captain America: The First Avenger was expected to have a successful weekend, but not to the point where it would knock Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 off its spot. The Superhero film made a debut of $65.8 million – over $100 million less than Harry Potter made last weekend. This summer has brought an onslaught of comic-book movies, but the tide has turned against them. From Thor to X-Men: First Class to The Green Lantern, none of these super-expensive movies have managed to crack $200 Million at the box office, the number Superman Returns made (and that was considered a failure). Partly it’s the films, partly it’s the characters – many of whom aren’t as well known as Batman and Superman. Enter Captain America: The First Avenger. Having recently suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous reporting, Chris Evans would have good reason to be guarded when he talked about Captain America. Thankfully he wasn’t, and he comes off as a thoughtful and humble guy who has made his choices very carefully when it comes to his career. After last weekend’s mammoth, record breaking debut of Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2, even with a dramatic fall off Potter will have no problem defeating the competition to stay on top of the box office charts. But it’s still got to face two films: the (hopefully) franchise starting Captain America: The First Avenger and familiar-seeming Friends With Benefits.
