New Priest Trailer promises Vampire War

Coming out May 13, Priest is going to be there at the start of the summer season. Paul Bettany will be doing battle with the forces of evil (aka Vampires) to protect his kin. There’s a lot of throwing stars and fighting involved, and the latest trailer also promises Cam Gigandet and Christopher Plummer. What more can you ask for from a Summer movie? Unknown. Priest has already been pushed back four times, and went through a troubled production, so I’m sure everyone’s happy to finally have the film hitting theaters. Little seen in the trailer are female stars Lily Collins and Maggie Q, nor any Karl Urban, who also appears in the film. Weird.

This is director Scott Charles Stewart‘s second film with Bettany in a similar territory – they both did Legion together. That also had supernatural asskickery.

If this film is just action sequences of priests using kung fu and elaborate weapons to fight off vampires, then I would bet that this might be better than its schedule changes would suggest. But this is also going to be a low budget type of affair where many of the money shots will be in the trailer. Bettany came close to being a real A-lister, but he’s taken his lumps, and now seems to have moved in to character acting, and being a B movie lead. At one point he was almost the lead in Kingdom of Heaven. Perhaps that was a bullet dodged for everyone.

Priest Theatrical Trailer – Paul Bettany Gets Angry

Paul Bettany’s done fighting angels in Legion, and chasing Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in The Tourist, he’s ready to stake some vampires! The British actor appears in the new theatrical trailer for his summer action film Priest, which is based on the Tokyo Pop comic book of the same name. Check out the new trailer below…

Priest is set in an alternate world world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

The film is directed by Scott Stewart who also helmed Legion, and it co-stars Karl Urban, Maggie Q (“Nikita“), Cam Gigandet, Stephen Moyer (“True Blood“), Madchen Amick, and Christopher Plummer.

Priest opens in theaters everywhere on May 13, 2011.

Leighton Meester Goes Crazy in The Roommate Trailer

If there’s one person you don’t want on your bad side it’s the chick from “Gossip Girl.” Not Blake Lively, but there other one. Leighton Meester appears in a new thriller called The Roommate that has her going all Single White Female on poor Minka Kelly from “Friday Night Lights“. It’s intense, it’s insane, it’s B-movie fun. Check out the trailer…

As you can see, this film centers on a college student whose roommate turns out to be a complete and utter psycho. It’s interesting that they cast Meester and Kelly, because after watching this video you notice the actresses look a lot of like, which works for the film. Even though The Roommate echoes Single White Female: The College Years, there seems to be a different motivation.

Meester isn’t trying to replace Kelly as much as isolate her. Maybe she wants her to feel the loneliness she does? Or she wants her to belong to her because she’s all she has?

On a side note, once again Cam Gigandet and Aly Michalka are appearing in a film together about school. They both co-star in Easy A, which opens this weekend.

The Roommate hits theaters on February 4, 2011.

Easy A: Movie Review

This weekend take a trip down memory lane and relive the awkwardness of high school with the help of Emma Stone and John Hughes. Easy A is a comedy that slightly mirrors the tale of the literary classic The Scarlet Letter but that’s just a tip of the iceberg. It’s more about the representation of young love and relationships in Hollywood, and pokes fun at them with the help of every 80s movie cliche in the book. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and most importantly it’s clever.

The Plot:

Easy A centers on Olive, an ordinary high school student, who’s life is mediocre in every way. In an attempt to spice up her persona she lies to her best friend about a sexual escapade that she had with a random guy. The news spreads like wildfire throughout her school and in a matter of hours she pops up on everyone’s radar. Shortly after, she agrees to fake a tryst with her openly gay classmate so people will think he’s straight and stop picking on him. Once again word spreads that she’s “easy,” and she starts making a business out of faking sex for the sake of others, while ruining her reputation in the process.

The Good:

The Cast: This cast is amazing! Everyone brings their A-game (no pun intended) and they know how to carry the comedic moments as well as the tender, more serious ones. Who ever thought that Malcolm McDowell could say “Keep the girls off the pole and the boys off the pipe” with a straight face?
The Direction: Will Gluck knows how to handle comedy without it being too over the top or in your face. He plays with a lot of John Hughes homages that are hidden and don’t take over the basic story he’s trying to tell. He incorporates them in a way where they’re fresh and funny.
The Screenplay: It’s been a long time since a film has been sarcastic and snarky without beating us over the head with it. You know how in some movies, they shoot joke after joke after joke at you to the point that it feels contrived and almost insulting? That doesn’t happen here.
The Tone: Everything about this movie has a purposeful and distinct look. The sets are bright and warm, even though the subject matter has to do with sex, lies, and gossip. The characters are interesting and have a lightness to them even though several of them have secrets and questionable motives. It’s a contrast that makes it a great change of pace compared to what we’ve been seeing in film.

The Bad:

Nothing: This movie kicks ass six ways from Sunday and needs to be seen!

Overall

Easy A is a really entertaining film. Its relatable, it funny, and it’s different. It’s worth more than the price of admission.

Rating: 10/10

Easy A opens in theaters nationwide on September 17th.

Burlesque Trailer – Dreamgirls, Showgirls, Rolled into One

The first theatrical trailer has been released for the musical Burlesque, that features Christina Aguilera opposite some pretty heavy hitters. There’s Oscar winner Cher and Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci on the veteran side and Kristen Bell and Cam Gigandet on the newbie side. Are you ready to see what happens when you mix Showgirls with Dreamgirls, and a whole lot of overacting? Check out the trailer to Burlesque…

This film doesn’t look interesting to me at all. It’s the same format of a small town girl moving to the big city to make it in entertainment. Bell’s character is Aguilera’s competition in the film, Cher’s the tough as nails club owner, and Tucci is her right hand man. Gigandet appears to be a bartender who’ll also serve as her love interest, that is if Eric Dane’s character doesn’t get to her first.

This movie could be enticing if maybe, just maybe Aguilera didn’t do what she always does with that wonderful voice — go all over the place. Sitting in a theater watching her wail from left to right doesn’t sound appealing. Hit a note, hold it, and then maybe you’ll have something.

Burlesque hits theaters on November 24th, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Comic-Con 2010: Priest Cast – A Funny Bunch from a Serious Movie

After multiple delays and a 3D conversion, Screen Gems upcoming Manga adaptation Priest has made its way to San Diego Comic-Con. The film is officially scheduled to hit theaters on May 13, 2011 and reunites director Scott Stewart with his Legion star Paul Bettany. Today we took part in the official roundtable interviews for the film that not only featured Bettany and Stewart but co-stars Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and yes Cam Gigandet from Twilight.

The entire event was light and funny. Bettany was hilarious and his young son (who was in the room) came up to him in the middle of the interview and gave him a big kiss! It was very sweet. Later on Stewart was speaking and Bettany came over after he left the table and interrupted to ask the director a question. It was very loose and relaxed. Screen Gems red-haired step-child, Priest has been delayed multiple times even though the film wrapped ages ago. The studio decided to convert it to 3D and also gave it a “final” release date of May 13, 2011. Over at /Film, they’ve posted a new batch of photos from the movie that includes shots of its major stars in action. Take a look…

Priest centers on “a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.” The cast includes Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and Stephen Moyer, Madchen Amick, and Christopher Plummer.

From what we’ve heard, the actual premise of the Manga from which the film is adapted varies in the actual movie. There is a question of how close director Scott Stewart remains to the source material that could impact whether or not the film is a success.

In these shots in particular, Maggie Q does look badass as the Priestess, but we’re more interested in seeing Moyer in costume. We’re so used to watching him as Bill on “True Blood” that sometimes we forget that he’s an actor who can actually play other characters.

A few photos from the set of Scott Stewart‘s Priest have hit the net. Actors Paul Bettany and Cam Gigandet were captured in full costume while filming the supernatural-western. Over at JFXOnline, they’ve posted a few behind the scenes images of these two between takes.

The story of Priest centers on “a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.” The cast also includes Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and Stephen Moyer.

Production on the film just began a week ago in Long Beach, California. From looking at these pictures one thing sticks out in my mind. Paul’s outfit reminds me of the Jedi robes worn in Star Wars. It specifically looks like the one Hayden Christensen wore when Anakin turned to the dark side. Am I the only one who sees that?

New Pandorum One Sheet

G.I. Joe may be hitting theaters this weekend, but co-star Dennis Quaid has another film waiting in the wings. The space thriller, Pandorum will take the actor from the military base to the limits of outer space via director Christian Alvart. The story centers on two men who awaken on a spaceship with amnesia. They have no idea how they got there, or what their mission is. As they try to decipher the ends and outs of the ship they discover that they’re not alone, and in order to survive they’ll have to encounter some of their darkest fears.

An official website has been launched for the upcoming adaptation of the Tokyo Pop comic, Priest. The film will star Paul Bettany (Legion) as the title character, along with Twilight‘s Cam Gigandet. The film’s story ” is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.” The following image has popped up on the official Sony website for the film, and was also shown at the tail end of the Legion Comic-Con panel last weekend.

Adrien Brody To Star In The Experiment Remake

It hasn’t been 10 years since the release of Oliver Hirschbiegel‘s German film Das Experiment yet, but already a remake is on its way. Boy, does everyone love to remakes, no matter what the genre! Director Paul Scheuring will helm Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood and Cam Gigandet in The Experiment starting next month in Iowa.

The original Das Experiment is based on the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment conducted in 1971. Check out more about the film below…

Das Experiment, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, centered on a group of ordinary men recruited to take on the roles of guards and prisoners as part of a research study and examined how the effects of assigned roles, power and control affected the participants. Brody will portray the de facto leader of the prisoners while Whitaker will play a guard who’s corrupted by the power he’s given.

Although we all may be fed up with so many remakes (let’s face it, they just aren’t as great) this one sounds pretty good. For one, the cast is strong; Adrien Brody is one of generations best performers and in this film he will “portray the de facto leader of the prisoners.” Sounds like an awesome role for him. Forest Whitaker and Elijah Wood, are also amazing as well and we all know have the ability to play up the crazy.

The thing that all three of these actors have in common, is that they always pick interesting projects with the potential to be amazing. It will be interesting to see them all on screen together in a project that has as much potential as this.

As for Scheuring, he’s spent most of his film career writing for “Prison Break” and the film A Man Apart so we know he knows about suspense.Will he be able to channel that into directing for the silver screen? We’ll find out!

New Trailer: THE UNBORN

This films’s got a LOT of shit going on. MTV released a new trailer for David S. Goyer’s new horror film for 2009 “The Unborn” starring Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman, Cam Gigandet, Meagan Good, Jane Alexander, and Idris Elba.

The story is about a teenage girl, Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) whose mother inexplicably left her when she was a child. As Casy grows older she begins to find out why she left. She had a twin brother when she was younger that died. Casy begins to become plagued with nightmares and a tortured ghost that haunts her, so she turns to Sendak (Gary Oldman), who uncovers the source of a family curse. Her brother was so evil that when he died, he was denied entrance to heaven. Now he wants back on earth and he needs to find a body to bear him.

The film potential. Some of the best producers you can work with and I see Garyn Oldman and I’m smitten. The story however gets a bit confusing when they start talking about curses that go back to Nazi Germany, a disappearing mother, spirits with revolving heads, and a boy who wants to be born to what seems like his sister. That starts to make me a little nervous. It sounds like they don’t exactly have their synopsis for this movie down yet which is always a little worrisome.

But take a peak at the trailer and judge for yourself. And let me know, is the twin brother trying to use his sister to birth him or simply as a body to possess?

The Unborn Opens On January 9th 2009.
