Potentially exciting news for fans of Star Trek and science fiction television: on the heels of the successfully rebooted Star Trek film franchise (2009’s Star Trek nearly made $400 million worldwide, with a highly anticipated sequel set for a May 2013 release), Bryan Singer and Heroes producer Bryan Fuller are currently discussing a potential new Star Trek television series.

Singer (who did wonders for the X-Men franchise with X-Men and X-2, not so much for Superman Returns, and whose Jack the Giant Killer is currently in post-production) and Fuller (who is also producing the upcoming Hannibal Lector TV series for NBC) are now in talks, hashing out a potential Star Trek TV series. It’s currently unknown as to whether or not the television series would be a reboot of a previous Trek series, set in the current “alternate timeline” of the rebooted film series, or would take place in the “original timeline” of the five previous series (Star Trek, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise).

Also unclear as to whether or not such a series would even get a green light, as according to Fuller, it would be wisely under J.J. Abrams‘ purview of what happens. He’s the guardian of Trek right now.” And since Abrams might be a just a tad busy crafting a new and successful Star Trek film franchise, a weekly TV may be put in the backseat.

As for the plot of the series, all Fuller would reveal in a recent interview is that “Bryan and I are big fans of Trek and have discussed a take on what we would do, and we would love to do it…I don’t think anything is going to happen in any official capacity until after the next movie comes out.” So let the ceaseless online speculation now begin!

Would you want to see a new Star Trek franchise?

Though it’s easy to suggest a nine month move means a film’s in trouble, it’s hard to know what to make of Warner Bros.’s decision to move Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Killer to March 2013. It’s much easier to judge their decision to scrap a release date on David Dobkin‘s Arthur & Lancelot, which puts the film into limbo.

If you saw the trailer for Jack the Giant Killer, it looked like a film that didn’t understand tone, or perhaps the trailer was misleading. Regardless, when your trailer hits with a thud – and it did – it’s either time to fix the trailer or the marketing. and from Warner Brother’s perspective, when you have three other big movies that summer (Dark Shadows, Rock of Ages, and The Dark Knight Rises), why take that chance? They’re going to have a big summer regardless, and March is more forgiving of less pre-sold films. It’s also worth noting that a big move doesn’t hurt a film. Titanic went from summer to winter, and Star Trek went from winter to summer, and it hurt neither. March may have once been an off season, but it’s now just as likely to launch a huge hit as anywhere else.

But it is hard to know if Arthur & Lancelot can survive this move. The film was pitched as a teen fantasy, and perhaps after Warner Brothers was burned by the failings of Red Riding Hood they don’t know if they can get the Twilight audience they were counting on. If the project quietly dies over the next couple weeks, this was just the harbinger, which was likely aided by Dobkin’s The Change Up bombing at the box office.

Does a release date change this drastic make you think a film is bad?

Three of the big films of 2012 are going to reinterpretations of fairy tales, but the one with the best credentials is Jack the Giant Killer. It comes from director Bryan Singer and the script was (at least partly) written by Christopher McQuarrie – and these guys were the team behind The Usual Suspects. The film stars Nicholas Hoult – last seen in X-Men: First Class - as Jack, and the trailer feels like it should have laughs. Check it out…

Seriously, I don’t get this film from the trailer. Maybe because everything about it – the magical beans, the giants, etc. – feels like it’s a big joke. And though Bryan Singer may still (on some level) be licking his wounds from his Superman fiasco, he came back with Valkyrie and he’s one of the better modern directors.

This could be one of the summer’s big movies, which – currently – looks like one of the weirdest and wildest summer slates outsides of the next Batman movie. This film could have cost over $200 illion, and looking at it, I’m curious if it plays like a real movie – that is not an extension of the Shrek universe. We’ll know for sure by June 15, 2012, but until then it’s hard to imagine this is their best foot forward… unless it is.

Does this excite you in any way?

Anyone who isn’t living in a cave and hasn’t seen the X-Men: First Class trailer knows that the prequel film is set in 1962 during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis—which is inarguably cool. And now, according to Dark Horizons, producer Bryan Singer is hinting that the film’s sequels might skip ahead to the ‘70s, and then the ‘80s (because if there’s one thing fans are clamoring for, it’s to see Wolverine rocking a Flock of Seagulls haircut).

Apparently, when asked about the sequels to First Class positioning themselves each in a new decade, Singer said, “That’s an idea that’s been discussed, how the characters go through time. But only to a point – they can’t age too fast!”

Which would be kind of cool—examining the different eras of the ever-changing comic book franchise as it evolved throughout the decades. However, Director Matthew Vaughn “sounds more keen on keeping to the 60′s”:

“1962 is far more grounded in the world of the ’50s. I think it takes about five years for a decade to really start getting its identity, so the fun thing about this for me would be doing [a sequel] in the latter part of the decade, where you’ve got The [Rolling] Stones, The Beatles, Flower Power…”

That’s an idea that could work, too—it’d be nice to see Professor X in his Maharishi phase, hosting bed-ins with storm to protest The War while Banshee runs an underground music ‘zine and Beast is selling tabs of acid in San Francisco.

Vaughn also mentions that he views First Class as his Batman Begins, and is already gunning for a much bigger sequel. “But with the second one you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time.
Jack the Giant Killer has had a blitzkrieg of casting news lately, as Bryan Singer’s “adult fairy tale” (not what you’re thinking) snowballs its way to the big screen. And today, another piece of the puzzle fell into place.

Ian McShane, otherwise known as the chilling badass Al Swearington from HBO’s Deadwood, has now been confirmed to star in the film as well. McShane’s having a busy year, as he’ll also appear as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Carribean: We’re Really Running This Into The Ground, Aren’t We?

According to /Film:

“Bryan Singer is pulling the final pieces into place for his ‘adult fairy tale’ Jack the Giant Killer. He’s got Nicholas Hoult playing the title character and Eleanor Tomlinson as the princess Jack hopes to rescue. And now Ian McShane is in the cast as a king in the human realm.

“The story sees an old, uneasy truce between giants and humans in danger thanks to the kidnapped princess. Ian McShane is the girl’s father, King Brahmwell, ‘who is none too thrilled about a union between his daughter and a farmer boy.’”

I’m still not seeing how this isn’t just a kid’s tale and is really an “adult” take on the fantasy genre, but I trust Singer and, again, nobody does chilling badass quite like McShane, so this could be one of 2011’s more interesting films.

What do you think of the casting news?

Over the past few weeks, fans of the X-Men franchise have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for details regarding the plot to the prequel First Class. The recent influx of casting changes including the addition of January Jones as Emma Frost and Zoe Kravitz as Angel (Salvadore?) has taken people for a loop. Over at AICN, they were able to set the record straight with an interview from producer Bryan Singer who not only clarified the film’s story but also Kevin Bacon’s role as the villain.

The setting of First Class will be the 1960s, a time when the country was bursting with the counter culture revolution, the Civil Rights Movement, and in this case, the increasing presence of mutants. We’ll get to see how “Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr met – and how they dreamt of a future with Mutant & Human kind. They’re going to be in their late twenties. Xavier – as played by James McAvoy will not be in his wheelchair to begin the film – but we will see how he wound up in a wheelchair.”

Jones and Bacon will play Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw and yes, they’ll be bringing the Hellfire Club with them. The overall theme will be very vintage and nowhere near as modern looking as the other X-Men films, something that they’ll be able to get away with because of the time period. The costumes “will be far more comic bookish than we’ve seen before.”

As for the characters, we won’t be seeing Scott (Cyclops) or Jean (Marvel Girl) around but Scott’s younger brother Havoc will be on board. The shoot is scheduled to begin on August 31st and it will have an international feel to it.

“They’ll be shooting in England & the United States – and they’ll be representing other locales around the globe as well, but would only tell me that Russia (aka The Soviet Union… CCCP) will be amongst them”

Overall, Singer says that First Class will be to X-Men what Casino Royale was to James Bond. I don’t have a personal investment in this film but for those of you who do, what do you think of all this? Can you imagine the early X-Men without Scott and Jean?

What do you think of Singer’s plan for First Class? Is he right or is he going about this the wrong way?

After the abomination of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s safe to say that the Marvel franchise is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Twentieth Century Fox’s latest attempt to restore dignity to the series comes in the form of First Class which will be produced by Bryan Singer and directed by Matthew Vaughn. In a recent interview with SyFy’s Blastr, Singer opened up about the film’s casting and how he wanted Twilight’s Taylor Lautner to be one of its stars!

Singer was a guest speaker on Sunday at a church in Hollywood (Hollywood United Methodist Church to be exact). Yep, only in Tinseltown can you get away with using a sacred place for media purposes. He discussed the casting process for First Class and revealed that he was interested in Lautner for a part but the actor was unfortunately unable to commit.

“I wanted Taylor [Lautner] to do it, I really did,” Singer said in an exclusive interview. “He’s doing a movie in Pittsburgh called Abduction, and then he’s got the next Twilight movie. We talked about it a lot—he is a friend—and I really wanted to make it work. It just doesn’t look like it’s possible to do it.”

There’s nothing sad about them not being able to work that out. So far the cast is filled with solid actors who can actually act and if they threw Lautner in a whole lot of credibility would have went down the drain.

Speaking of crap, he also clarified that he’s not on board to direct Wolverine 2. Apparently there was a rumor going around that he had signed on but he nipped that in the bud.

It’s not what I’m going to do right now. The next project for me next year, in London, is Jack the Giant Killer. That is set in the 1300s, and it’s very fun. It will be a big movie.”

That sounds more promising.

How would you have felt about First Class if Lautner was cast? Would he hurt or help the movie’s image?

Poor Bryan Singer. According to THR, the director, screenwriter, and producer’s next project Jack the Giant Killer has been delayed. The New Line Cinema production was supposed to begin shooting sometime this summer but it’s not happening. He must be distracted by all the movement going on at Fox with X-Men: First Class.

The film’s story will center on the kidnapping of a princess that threatens a long-standing peace between men and giants. A young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing her. Word on the street is that Singer has been meeting with various young actors for the lead part including Kick-Ass star, Aaron Johnson and Andrew Garfield from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Just last month, Christopher McQuarrie was brought on board to pen the screenplay and it seemed like everything was good to go. No specific reason has been given regarding the delay but sources claim it may have something to do with mapping out the special effects. “Singer is planning on previz-ing the movie from start to finish, and will use a process that will allow him to see the giants in-camera as the actors play opposite them.”

Interesting. We’ve got our eye on you Singer. Jack the Giant Killer will be released some time in February 2011.

What do you think of the film’s delay? Do you think this is a good or a bad sign?

Last week we learned that Kick-Ass‘ Matthew Vaughn was up to direct the comic spin-off, X-Men: First Class. Initially 20th Century Fox and the director were said to be in “talks” but now his involvement has been confirmed and a release date has been set for the film. Vaughn and previous X-Men helmer Bryan Singer will join forces to bring some respectability back to the series.

In an official press release sent out by the studio, they confirmed that First Class will begin production this summer and the film will be released on June 3, 2011. That’s right, the movie has been fast tracked for next year! Films that move at this speed usually turn out to be steaming piles of crap and this franchise doesn’t need another one of those (Wolverine, X3: The Last Stand).

If the film sticks to the original premise, the story will center on the early years at the Xavier Institute as well as the former friendship of its founders Professor Xavier and Magneto. The First Class roster (from the comic) consists of Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), Scott Summers (Cyclops), Hank McCoy (Beast), Warren Worthington III (Angel), and Robert Drake (Iceman).

We can understand the studio wanting to shy away from the 2012 summer season because that’s when Batman 3, The Avengers, and the new Spider-Man are all set to debut but 2011 isn’t much better. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Mission Impossible 4, Kung Fu Panda 2, The Hangover 2, and The Green Lantern are all set to open around the same time as First Class.

If Vaughn and Singer can nail down a good cast and a GREAT script the film might deliver but we’re a bit skeptical.

Do you think First Class will revive the X-Men franchise?

Soon after Bryan Singer dropped the bomb that he would be returning to the X-Men franchise he launched nearly ten years ago, details regarding his decision have begun to emerge. Singer may have bigger and brighter plans for this batch of Marvel mutants that we’re not even aware of…

Singer recently spoke to the people over at The Hollywood Reporter and stated that X-Men First Class might supercede the long awaited Magneto spin-off. The story for the film will center on younger versions of both Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnssher, which would utilize some of the Magneto story that would be found in any possible solo project. The timelines cross each other similar to how the flashbacks in X2: X-Men United cross over with some of the weapon X scenes in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

According to Singer, This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust.

After doing the first two films in the X-Men series, Singer left in 2006 to do Superman Returns over at Warner Bros. The move made many of us wonder if he left the franchise or Fox on good terms. The director stresses that his relationship with the studio isn’t as dark and dreary as the general public would like to think.

A lot of that was comical and exaggerated. When you set up a rather lucrative franchise and produce one of the company’s biggest television shows (“House”), I think there is a lot of good energy on a business level. But also, Tom Rothman and I have a very strong relationship from those early days of “X-Men 1″ when he ascended to the chairmanship and I was involved in this very important movie for the studio. We bonded then.

Hopefully with his return, the lack of good comic book films from Fox will cease and desist. Even though he only has one new X-film under is belt, it could compensate for years of bad blood between fans and the studio. The only thing that concerns me is the correlation between First Class and Magneto. If the stories overlap with one another they better make sure the images they use match up in both films, because that wasn’t the case in Wolverine.

What do you think of Singer’s take on First Class? Do you think Fox should continue with the Magneto spin-off?

Just yesterday news broke that X-Men and X2: X-Men United director Bryan Singer would be returning to the Marvel franchise with First Class. Now we’re hearing more details on his development deal including the writer who’s been hired to pen the script.

It’s been confirmed by various sources that Singer will return to his (for lack of a better word) mutant roots with the Fox property that he left in 2006. The director was originally set to helm the third film in the X-Men franchise, The Last Stand but dropped out when the studio wanted to fast track the project. At the time he was working on his Superman revival Superman Returns over at Warner Bros, and had a scheduling conflict. After a few years away from the property, Singer has been lured back to put his spin on the prequel, First Class.

According to THR, a writer has been hired to develop the script for the film and it’s none other than Jamie Moss. If his name doesn’t sound familiar it’s probably because he only has one feature credit on his resume, and it’s for last year’s Street Kings. That movie wasn’t the greatest in the world, so his involvement doesn’t generate excitement on my part. The new film is supposed to center on the meeting of Professor Xavier and Magneto and their creation of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, the school masquerading as the headquarters of the X-Men.

The die hard fans of the X-Men franchise have been burned by Fox’s movie adaptations more than once so it’s hard to trust their judgment. Even though Singer’s versions were the best of the bunch, he made a few creative changes with the story that weren’t well liked. He manipulated ages, cultures, relationships, and pretty much rewrote the comic’s history. My interest in First Class is slowly declining, and the hiring of this novice writer isn’t helping.

What do you think of Moss taking on the script for First Class?

After the theatrical train wreck that was X3: The Last Stand, comic fans everywhere were convinced that the franchise’s only salvation would be the return of director, Bryan Singer. Singer previously hinted that he would be interested in taking on another film and today he’s finally come to a decision. He will direct the upcoming X-Men spin-off, X-Men: First Class.

Over at Flickchart, they recently caught up with Singer at the premiere of James Cameron‘s Avatar, where he casually dropped the bomb about his latest project. They went on to tweet that “Bryan Singer just leaked that he’s directing the next X-men Origins film on the AVATAR “blue carpet”.” The diligent folks at /Film went a step further and dug up the actual soundbite from the interview. Here’s the transcription of it:

I’m prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer [at] Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool.

Singer directed the first X-Men film in 2000 followed by the best installment of the trilogy, X2: X-Men United. He was also supposed to helm the third film The Last Stand, but dropped out to take on Superman Returns.

Even though Singer’s two X-Men films were the best of the four produced, they weren’t the greatest adaptations of the comic books. He made a lot of uneccessary changes that could clash with the story of First Class down the line.

The First Class comic centers on the first group of students at Professor Xavier’s school for the gifted. They included Jean Grey, Cyclops, Angel, Beast, and Iceman. In the first X-Men movie, Singer made Iceman a teenager and Beast was nowhere to be found. If you look close enough, he makes a cameo somewhere in his human form but doesn’t have any dialogue. He’ll have to change the entire makeup of the team, which makes me uneasy. Don’t be surprised if they start pulling characters from Generation X for this one.

What do you think about Singer’s return to the X-Men franchise?
