New DVD Releases: Star Trek, Bruno, A Very Sunny Christmas

We have both sides of the spectrum hitting DVD shelves this week, as the mega-hit Star Trek flies into video stores at the same time as mega-bomb Bruno. One had the big buzz, the other had the biggest reverse-buzz of all time. Yet somehow, they both come out on the same day.

Plus, we finally have a good Christmas DVD as the “Always Sunny” gang does their best to desecrate the holiday as well as, the most extensive Gone With The Wind DVD you’ll ever see. And, as always, the three worst DVDs you’ll find anywhere.

FEATURE FILMS

Star Trek

Remember when this movie came out? Remember the initial reaction? Remember the first couple of weeks in May when everybody was declaring it an amazing piece of film, a tremendous experience? Doesn’t that all seem like it was a bit silly now? A few months after, this movie was largely forgotten. The movie that people were proclaiming as one of the best summer movies of all time had been left far back in our memory banks replaced by Terminator bashing or Public Enemies disappointment.

Now, it’s back on DVD. Will it relive its former glory? Will people once again proclaim its greatness and hail J.J. Abrams as the king of the new wave of Sci-Fi? Or will people simply buy the DVD and have it collect dust on their shelves next to their copy of Star Wars Episode III?

Bruno

This is another one of those movies that came and was quickly forgotten. Actually, it was incredibly quickly forgotten. Like the day after it was released it was gone and dead. Why? Twitter.

Twitter supposedly killed this movie. As soon as people walked out of the film (that should have been rated NC-17) they launched an assault of Tweets decrying it as the most offensive piece of filth they’d ever seen. Tweeps saw the 140-character reviews and the Twitterati had its day: Bruno was dead and is now essentially forgotten.

This simply speaks to the way the Internet allows old-school marketing to spread so rapidly. It used to take several weeks for negative word-of-mouth to damage a film, now it’s a matter of one night as evidenced by Bruno‘s titanic Friday to Saturday collapse.

Will it stick? We’ll just have to see how many buy this DVD.

TV ON DVD

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas”

Is this the funniest show on TV? Well, it damn well could be. Anybody who’s been following this outrageous season have laughed more this season than ever as the zany gang again tackles issues like the economy, consumerism and interventions with their signature descecratory aplomb.

But now, a DVD? A special DVD that’s only 43 minutes? What’s the deal with that? This is essentially a two-part “Sunny” episode that we’re now forced to pay nearly 20 bucks to see. This from the independent comedic forces fighting the good and outrageous fight for actual humor on television. Sure, it will probably be more outrageous than what’s available on FX, but actually having to pay? Seems fishy.

So if you’re a “Sunny” die hard, this is probably a must-buy DVD. However, it may simply contribute to the start of a major sell-out from this hilarious quintet. So buy with caution.

SPECIAL EDITION OF THE WEEK

Gone With The Wind – 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition

Another week, another landmark legendary classic. This one could probably be considered the greatest movie ever made. It made more money than any movie (adjusting for inflation, of course), has always been included on the top ten “best of” lists of movies ever made, it features the most famous film line of all time, and everybody’s seen it.

Wait. Has everybody seen it? I haven’t. I’ve never felt like sitting down for the four hour Civil War tale that has had its ending spoiled for me by that iconic line. Also, just as often as it’s been called one of the best movies, it’s also been tagged as overrated. So the question remains – has anybody that is capable of accessing the Internet actually seen this movie? Was this just a classic of yesteryear that never carried through to the digital age? So. . .

The Case to Vote for It: Since there are absolutely no plot details for this movie available, I’ll let a fake trailer voiceover for the movie make its case: Nathan Bexton, Jonathan Breck, in a film from the creator of Dog Soldiers and Cemetery Gates – Once It’s Unleashed it Can Never Be Stopped: It’s Evilution. Yes, that is exactly how this movie would be promoted if it were in theaters. No surprise at all it would go straight to stores.

The Open Road

The Case to Vote for It: Who should we pity more with this movie? Is it Justin Timberlake? He was probably thrilled to be working with acting legend Jeff Bridges – maybe finally to be taken seriously as an actor. Or is it the aforementioned Bridges? He probably thought he’d have a big hit on his hands with Timberlake at his side. Now it’s being dumped directly to DVD. Wow, this must be horrible.

Wild Child

The Case to Vote for It: Pitty poor Poppy (the name of Emma Roberts’ character) she used to be a spoiled Malibu princess. Now she’s being shipped off to boarding school in England to get straightened out! Worst of all, she’s stuck in a terrible straight-to-DVD flick. Poor Poppy just can’t win!

Brüno Deleted Pete Rose Scene

It’s hard to believe that the majority of the summer’s most talked about releases are already hitting DVD shelves. Sacha Baron Cohen‘s latest character driven venture Bruno, hit domestic theaters back in July and the marketing for its home release is already in full swing. One of the many extras that will be featured on the Bruno DVD is an awkward extended scene with baseball legend, Pete Rose.

What happened to Pete Rose? A lot apparently, but that’s neither here nor there. After seeing this scene, you get a better understanding of why Bruno didn’t fare as well at theaters compared to Borat. Nothing against Sacha, but something just isn’t there comically. This is an alternate scene not included in the film, but will available as bonus material on the Brüno Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def and DVD which debuts November 17, 2009 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Can you believe it will be hitting shelves in less than two weeks? Where did the time go? Remember when movies came out on VHS eight months after the fact? This definitely isn’t the nineties anymore.

Bruno Banned in the Ukraine

Bruno has been banned in the Ukraine due to its immoral message and images. According to reuters.com, this is not the first Sacha Baron Cohen movie that has been kept away from Ukraine viewers, his first feature film, the equally outrageous film Borat, was also banned in the ex-Soviet state.

A culture ministry commission concluded that the film included:

“Artistically unjustified exhibition of sexual organs and sexual relations, homosexual acts in a blatantly graphic form, obscene language, sadism, anti-social behavior which could damage the moral upbringing of our citizens.”

It seems the United States and the Great Britain do not share the same opinions as the Ukraine, where conservative views on homosexuality still prevail. The movie opened at the top of the box office for both the U.S. and Britain.

Terrorist Leader Upset with Bruno

Surprise, surprise someone else is pissed off at Sacha Baron Cohen for the way that they were portrayed in his film Bruno… why is this news, because it’s a terrorist leader. Or so we think. According to Cohen, apparently terrorists are hard to find!

WND is reporting that the man called a terrorist in the film, Ayman Abu Aita, served in the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades from 2000 until 2003, but was reformed after two years in an Israeli prison for an accusation that he was involved in a shooting. Aita is now offended by Bruno and is saying that he was lied to…

“[Baron Cohen] said this was a film going to help the Palestinian cause,” Aita told WND. “When I heard (four days ago) what this film was about I really didn’t believe it.”

Aita is now thinking about pursuing legal actions against Cohen. Below we get to see a video of Sacha Baron Cohen as…. SACHA BARON COHEN on Letterman talking about his experience with Aita….

Aita, however, says that the interview “took place at a private section of a popular restaurant called Everest in the town of Beit Jala, which is in a section in the West Bank under Israeli control and that he does not carry any weapons and Palestinians are not allowed to bring weapons into Beit Jala.”

He added that “he does not have a bodyguard. The second individual who showed up with him for the interview with Baron Cohen, he said, was Sammy Awad, the American manager of the Holy Land Trust.”

I have to say, this is not the least bit surprising to me. The chances if Cohen sitting down with a REAL active terrorist is impossible, because like he said “they’re hard to find,” and if he could find them, so could someone else. I still think it’s an amazing scene to watch. Given the situation that Cohen was in, the city he was in, and the outfit he was wearing, he still took a huge risk. The point is not that any of this is REAL but that he and more importantly WE believed it might be real and went with it.

It is sad that Aita was duped by Bruno, but he’ll probably win a lawsuit and get a ton of money.

It’s interesting to see him change so quickly from one to the other. He’s so incredibly NOT Bruno with his thick accent and demeanor, it’s amazing to see how “on” he can be in a moments notice.

Box Office Predictions: Will Bruno Be No. 1?

Bruno has waited long enough to make his debut on the big screen — the time has come for Sacha Baron Cohen‘s Bruno to take over the box office.

With Transformers going on its third week — the robot-hype is finally settling down, there shouldn’t be too much competition from the film. Ice Age on the other hand is still going strong in theaters and it will definitely be attracting all of those who think that Bruno is too offensive. Yet, odds are that Bruno’s dramatic premiere entrances, outrages photos and even his stunt with Eminem at the MTV Movie Awards, will surely get him a number one spot.

Cohen’s last film Borat ranked at number one on opening weekend, making $26.5 million even though it opened in only 837 theaters in the United States. Bruno will be opening in 2,756 theaters.

The LA Times reports that the studio opened Bruno on Wednesday in Australia, Belgium and New Zealand, and that the film grossed more than Borat in all three countries for a total of $1.6 million.

Another film opening this weekend is Fox‘s low-budget comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, which hasn’t really sparked that much interest from the boys and girls. Also in theaters is Michael Mann‘s Public Enemies which opened last weekend and debuted at number three.

None of these films stand a chance against Bruno — a film that has been advertised over and over again. So go on and head to the theaters, Bruno opened today and it is one outrages, insulting, and hilarious movie.

Movie Releases: Bruno, I Love You Beth Cooper, Weather Girl

The wait is over, Larry Charles‘ Brüno hits theaters today and based on reviews so far, Sacha Baron Cohen is not going to disappoint. Get ready to laugh out loud at the outrageous and sometimes plain stupid things. If high school romantic comedy is more your style, then you are in luck, Chris Columbus’ film I Love You, Beth Cooper starring Hayden Panettierre and Paul Rust is out this week also.

My favorite this week would have to be the story of the girl who gets dumped and freaks out on-air while doing the weather broadcast in Blayne Weaver’s Weather Girl. The plot might not be much but Tricia O’Kelley really sells her character, as the heartbroken/lost/confused weather girl to the audience.

Bruno: Movie Review

You’ve seen the poster, the dramatic premiere entrances, the photos, the red band trailer, him falling on Eminem’s face and all too much of Sacha Baron Cohen’s ass, now it’s time for the real deal. It’s time for Brüno. Here is what you need to know:

Is this movie offensive, YES.
Is it jaw-droppingly hilarious, YES.
Does he use the same plot as in Borat, YES.
Are his gags getting old, NO.

Just like the first time when you saw Borat, you will be in complete and utter dismay at what you see in front of you. It doesn’t feel re-hashed, it delivers everything you could want from an offensive comedy.

Now it’s time for the good, the bad and the plot…

Side Note: There are NO spoilers in this review.

The Plot:

A flamboyant Austrian fashionista named Brüno (Cohen) decides that he’s done all he could in his homeland, and if he really wants to make it, he has to take his show to America. His only goal, become FAMOUS, like Paris Hilton famous.

The Good:

The Humor: It is absolutely hilarious, no doubt about it. The scenes with him “exploring” his character are more shocking than funny. The real humor comes from him tormenting people.
His Wit: He comes up with things so fast, it’s incredible. Whether he’s sitting around or in a high pressure situation he can come up with great lines at the drop of hat.
The Victims: Many people were worried that after Borat, he wouldn’t be able to get people on camera willing to degrade themselves. WRONG! It seems that there are still plenty of people out there who haven’t caught onto Cohen’s tricks and he is great as exploiting their ignorance. Although he’s the clown, it’s those around him that we’re really laughing at. We saw it in Borat and now he takes it to a whole new level in Bruno.
The Guest Stars: The famous people he gets on camera are incredible. There aren’t as many celebrities this time, but definitely faces you’ll know (or should know) that will absolutely shock you.
The Locations: Those ginormous balls you see stuffed into those tiny weenie shorts must be real with the things that he pulls off. All I thought walking out of his film, is “how is he not dead?” How does he get away with the things that he does in the places he does them without being stoned, knifed, shot, or a combination of all three? He does get whipped, and you can tell, there’s no faking it on his set.

The Bad:

The Plot: We’ve seen it before. It’s the exact same plot line as Borat, just with a different character and different locations. That being said, if you’re going to see Bruno for the plot, you should really consider being interviewed by one of Cohen’s characters.
It’s Offensive: Yes, it’s offensive. As much as I would like to say it’s not, it is. Just try to remember it’s a satire and only a device to create humor, not a reflection of any group of people.
The Run time: I rarely get to say this, but I wanted 10-15 minutes more. The run time is a measly 83 minutes. Although I respect them for realizing they had 83 good minutes of a film and didn’t fill the rest with fluff, I wished it would have been a bit longer. Throw him into one more snake pit just for the hell of it.

Overall:

I think the only lesson you can take from this film is how our education system is failing us. “What’s Dar-fur?” Dear god, someone get that woman a newspaper!

The trick to this film, don’t over think it. It’s meant for entertainment, not deep thought. If you’re looking for a good laugh and can put the offensiveness aside, this is probably the best offensive, vulgar, shocking comedy you’ll see this year (although The Hangover is definitely a contender).

Best Picture Ever….

MTV is calling this “The Greatest Photo Ever” and they’re not wrong. You’ve got Zooland (Ben Stiller), Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood), and probably one of the most successful comedy director/producers in the past decade Judd Apatow, all huddled around the biggest star-f*cker of all time Bruno.

Also, where is Eastwood’s left hand? It almost looks like he might be grabbing him some Bruno tush. Boy oh boy would that make my day… and Bruno.
