‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Final Poster Features Copious Photoshop And Bronzer

Coming on the heels of the enormously ridiculous full trailer that featured a bevy of actors seemingly covered in Crisco and self-tanning lotion while things in the background go boom boom boom really loud, G.I. Joe Retaliation has finally released a full one-sheet poster, and it’s, well, kind of a mess.

Featuring Bruce Willis’ airbrushed (actually, more like airblasted) head Frankenstein’d onto a generic suited body with a set of monkey hands pasted on with a gun while Dwayne Johnson’s fake-baked commando stands in a sea of stock-photo, soft-focus fire, the poster is all kinds of wrong.

Oh! It has Cute Pensive Girl With Gun, which is also a perennial favorite of the crappy poster. We’ve also got Random Action Pose Ninja basically floating in the background to fill up some empty space, and the Big Bad looming in the background like Darth Vader’s goofy little brother, Wayne.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens on June 29, 2012, where it will essentially be a way to pass the time losing brain cells until The Amazing Spider-Man comes out the following weekend. In addition to Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, Retaliation stars Channing Tatum and Jonathan Price. In it, an imposter of the U.S. President allows the evil Cobras to take control of the government, and a lot of yelling, CGI, and explosions happen, and I bet Willis says something sarcastic and Johnson will look hard at things.

The ‘Expendables 2′ Full Trailer Is Out, Even More Ridiculous Than You Imagined It Could Be

Featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger announcing “I’m back!,” Jason Statham stabbing a groom at a wedding and declaring “I now pronounce you man and knife,” and Sylvester Stallone crashing an airplane into a train tunnel in the side of a mountain, the trailer for The Expendables 2 features some of the most ludicrous action clichés committed to celluloid since Commando bowed in 1985. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any sillier, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme show up to shoot and kick things, respectively.

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little brainless fun (unless it’s directed by Michael Bay and stars Shia Labeouf), and if Sly Stallone wants to rehash the glory days with his aging compatriots, why not? It can’t be any worse than the modern action films starring The Rock or Vin Diesel, right?

The film’s plot revolves around Stallone’s crew of aging badasses sneaking deep behind enemy lines to raid a stockpile containing copious amounts of tanning cream, Cialis, and Ben-Gay before Stallone’s Botox injections leave him unable to communicate orders to his crew. Something like that. Dig the trailer:

If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about the film, nothing will: machismo, ‘80s style action, explosions, big guns, wildly inflated muscles and egos, and Chuck goddamn Norris. The Expendables 2 stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and is set for an August 17^th release.

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer Features Lots Of Orange Skin, Bruce Willis, And Boom-Booms

In a series of quickly edited shots drenched in a palette of the prerequisite orange and teal, featuring actors fake-baked and color-corrected to an unnatural orange hue and surrounded by a CGI landscape of kabooms, slow-to-fast motion collisions, and Bruce Willis in full-on late-period-bald-Bruce-Willis-paycheck-role mode, the full trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation is basically every other action trailer you’ve seen over the past 10 years. But hey, it’s got The Rock being all The Rock-y, and a storyline that rips off The A-Team. Check it out, courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

Opening June 29, 2012, G.I. Joe: Retaliation features, in addition to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum and Jonathan Pryce. In the film, a fake President of the United State allows the Cobras to take control of the government, and only the disgraces Joes can stop them and then some things blow up, some ice falls on people, some flat, depth-less CGI occurs, and Bruce Willis does some things while smirking. Elsewhere, The Rock flexes and arches his eyebrows, while Channing Tatum looks blankly at things. Exciting!

There honestly doesn’t appear to be much in this trailer that separates it in tone from something like the Battleship trailer, but the first Joe film made over $300 million worldwide, so there’s obviously a built-in audience for this sucker. Still, as flashy as it is, there doesn’t really seem to be anything new here, but what do you expect from a G.I. Joe movie?

The ‘Looper’ Trailer Now Has A Director’s Commentary

We’re living in a strange era of the movie trailer—in an effort to boost hype and gain attention, ad companies and movie studios are coming up an increasingly bizarre series of attempts to make the movie trailer more interesting. Some are successful (like the backwards trailer for The House at the End of the Street); some are not (just about every “trailer for the trailer” ever). The teaser for Looper (itself pretty cool) not only has a series of behind the scenes previews leading up to its premiere last week, it now has a director’s commentary by Rian Johnson.

That’s right, a two-minute trailer has an audio commentary, which is more than a little ridiculous. That said, it’s easy to forgive such an annoying marketing gimmick as, well, Looper looks like one of the most interesting action/thriller films of the year.

In Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a “Looper”—an assassin who murders people sent back in time to be assassinated, which eliminates any evidence in the future. Things get a little complicated, however, when Gordon-Levitt is tasked with killing his future self (Bruce Willis).

In the commentary, which has a surprising amount of quiet lulls for an audio track that’s only two minutes long, Johnson discusses the “grounded in reality” look of his time-twisting sci-fi film, as well as the subtle makeup prostheses used to make Gordon-Levitt resemble a young Bruce Willis (it’s a little freaky).

So, what do you make of the commentary track for the trailer—is it a useful, interesting tool to learn more about the film, or does it come off as a pointless, and not entirely illuminating, marketing gimmick? Whatever the end result, we’re still excited about Looper—the novel concept, coupled with the artists involved, make it high on our Must See in 2012 list.

Looper will be released in the U.S. on September 28.

‘Looper’ Gets A Time-Twisted Teaser Trailer

Try saying that headline three times fast. Then wrap your head around Looper’s premise: Mobsters from the future, in an effort to properly dispose of evidence, send their victims 30 years into the past to be executed by hired assassins called ‘Loopers.’ One such Looper is Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who one day arrives at the job to find himself with tasked with killing his future self (Bruce Willis), which is where the wackiness (including Gordon-Levitt doing his best Willis drawl under some subtle makeup FX) begins.

Looper is directed by Rian Johnson (who previously directed Gordon-Levitt in the excellent high school take on film noir, Brick) and co-stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels in what looks to be one of the few high-concept actions films of the summer that is not a franchise, sequel, prequel, side-quel, reboot, remake, TV series adaptation, young adult novel adaptation, comic book adaptation, Michael Bay ripoff (I’m looking at you, Battleship), or 3D film. Kind of refreshing, no?

While only a short teaser, Looper looks to be, like Brick, a revisionist take on an old-school genre (time travelling sci-fi). Also a plus—there appears to be no smirking, paycheck-cashing Bruce Willis coasting that hampered the last few Bruno films. Here’s hoping he doesn’t go all David Addison on us in the full-length trailer.

Check Out The Sneak Peek To The Teaser Trailer For ‘Looper’

We’re all for new forms of audience outreach and clever marketing here at ScreenCrave. We’re also highly anticipating Rian Johnson’s new film, Looper, in which a young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is hired to be a “Looper” (an assassin who kills people sent from the future) and is tasked with murdering his 30-years-older self (Bruce Willis)—at which point things get complicated. But one thing we’re getting sick of? The trailers for trailers. Or, in this case, the “sneak peak” to the upcoming release of the film’s teaser trailer. Check it out below (and hey, we’re still excited about Looper).

In the sneak peak, director Rian Johnson (Brick) and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt smirk and smarm it up for the camera while not really saying anything substantive about the film at all—which is a drag, as the film does have a novel (if a bit TimeCop-y) premise that the two do not discuss at all. Instead, you get a few flash cuts of some guns, some explosions, a helicopter, and Bruce Willis and Gordon-Levitt staring at each other a lot.

Despite the lackluster preview, Johnson is a capable director and the premise is certainly intriguing, so let’s just hope this was a marketing misstep. Looper opens on September 28; the trailer hits on April 12.

New International ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Trailer Shows Things Going Boom A Lot

Well, another day, another G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer that shows things exploding, people running while seemingly coated in Crisco to replicate sweat, people shooting at various things, some sword fights on a mountain, and Bruce Willis shows up, shoots people, and smirks for a little bit. Oh, and The Rock glares at things and occasionally does that eyebrow cocking thing. Exciting?

Also, you see the White House being taken over by the Cobras, along with the new casting additions of Bruce Willis, The Rock, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, RZA, and D.J. Cotrona. The returning cast features Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Lee Byung-hun, Arnold Vosloo and Jonathan Pryce. Check it out:

It looks like pretty generic modern action movie stuff (Look, a famous national landmark! Look, slow motion shots that speed up and then slow back down! Look, things repeatedly exploding! Look, a cameo by an action megastar!), but hey, one can’t exactly expect much from a film that’s a sequel to a movie that is based on a Hasbro action figure line and 1980s cartoon series, right? Oh well, G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens on June 29, and is directed by Jon Chu.

Is knowing truly half the battle?

Bruce Willis and Edward Norton in the Moonrise Kingdom Trailer

At this point, it’s easy to know what to expect from Wes Anderson. Great Performers, a distinct visual style, and maybe just maybe some twee. In Moonrise Kingdom there’s Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman in a story about two star-crossed child lovers who escape from a summer camp, which leads to a full scale rescue mission. The film opens May 25, and now there’s a trailer.

With that release date, it suggests the film is going to Cannes, which is no surprise. And with Wes Anderson you’re dealing with a very distinct visual approach, so much so that watching the trailer you get a real sense of what it is. But now there’s at least some new players to the team, and it will be interesting to see how Willis and Norton work in the Anderson universe.

I like Wes Anderson, but at this point he doesn’t seem to have many screwballs left in his pitching arm. He makes the sort of movies he makes, and they’ve come to have a very narrow set of themes and ideas. From the trailer you can see that he’s doing things that are very similar to everything he’s done before for better or worse. Granted, I don’t think he’d do well within the studio system, nor would the world be better with him helming tentpoles, but it’s a curious career full charm and repetition. We’ll know how this one turns out in May.

The Best Oddball Christmas Films To Watch During The Holidays

Christmas. It’s a time in which families huddle together around the warm, bustling glow of the fireplace, with the mantle framed with rows of stockings the TV set as we nod off from half a gallon of eggnog and some turkey. And, in keeping with that tradition, we here at ScreenCrave have cobbled together a list of our favorite unusual Christmas films—not A Christmas Story or It’s a Wonderful Life or any other of the more obvious picks; rather, it’s our favorite oddball X-mas movies, the films that somehow catch our attention every single year, even if they aren’t exactly the most appropriate holiday fare.

So, with that in mind, dig our list after the jump, and get your Tivo ready to line these up for some Christmas Eve viewing (also, and perhaps it’s a generational thing, or maybe it was the impressive amounts of blow Hollywood execs were inhaling back then, but all of the best weirdo Christmas movies came from the 1980s. Go figure).

5. Trading Places (1983)

Taking us back to those halcyon days when Eddie Murphy was actually brilliantly funny, and when Dan Aykroyd was letting us all know he was still alive, John Landis dropped the comedy masterpiece Trading Places on an unsuspecting world. Taking place over the holiday season in 1980s Philadelphia, the film is a witty, decadent, hilarious and charmingly vulgar update of Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper, in which hotshot brokerage director Danny Aykroyd is forced to switch places with homeless street hustler Eddie Murphy, and both must survive as a fish out of water in the other man’s life. As Aykroyd becomes suicidal and driven into the arms of a hooker with a heart of gold, and Murphy goes from being a ribald street thug to a slick power player, it may not sound like a family classic, but Trading Places is one of the funniest flicks you’ll catch on TV all Christmas long.

4. Scrooged (1988)

A modern, semi-meta take on A Christmas Carol, Scrooged finds Bill Murray as a black-hearted TV exec at the height of his cynical, soulless career, during the rehearsals for his live TV adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. And, just like in that Dickens classic, Murray is visited by three ghosts who show him where his life went off track, and how he sacrificed true love for material wealth. But just in case that sounds a little too typical of Christmas schmaltz for you, don’t worry—Murray is in his full-on 80s smartass mode, all while being chased around by rotting corpses, insanely violent pixies, and Death itself, as he simultaneously struggles to staple some fake antlers onto a mouse’s head for his TV special and avoid network TV censors. Dark, wacky Christmas fun.

3. Christmas Vacation (1989)

Probably as much of a Christmas tradition in suburbia as opening presents on December 25th, viewing Christmas Vacation during the holidays has become a kind of unavoidable yuletide habit. The story of a brutally inept and occasionally foulmouthed father (Chevy Chase in a slightly smarter Homer Simpson mode) trying to survive the ultimate staycation as his parents, his in-laws, his children, his bitchy yuppie neighbors, his idiot cousin, a monstrous dog, a berserk squirrel and a full-on SWAT team converge upon his house over Christmas, Vacation is nothing short of a holiday classic. Sure the language is risqué, and it’s probably the only holiday classic to feature electrocuted cats and exploding sewage lines, but hey—that’s what surviving Christmas with a giant family feels like.

2. Gremlins (1984)

It doesn’t get much better than this—Joe Dante directing a Steven Spielberg-produced, Chris Columbus-penned gem about Gizmo, the most adorable little pet ever… and the truly horrifying, reptilian and murderous gremlins that Gizmo accidentally gives birth to. Playing like a live action episode of Looney Tunes (except all the cartoon characters are determined to murder you with household items before taking in a showing of Snow White), Gremlins truly is an utterly insane film. It’s also a classic that, inexplicably, the whole family can somehow enjoy—and when a film’s comic highlight is a played-totally-straight monologue about a child who discovers her dead father dressed as Santa and wedged in the chimney, that’s really saying something.

1. Die Hard (1988)

The recipe: It’s Christmas in Los Angeles. Hard-headed NYPD cop John McClane is visiting his estranged wife at the Nakatomi Plaza corporate high rise. German terrorists take over the building to raid its vaults, and manage to take everyone but McClane hostage. McClane runs around over broken glass with no shoes and a machine gun, and one seriously bad attitude.

As good as full-on ‘80s action films get, Die Hard is both an instant action and holiday classic. Coasting on the sheer charm of Bruce Willis as McClane and Alan Rickman as his smooth-talking nemesis, Die Hard has everything you could want from a Christmas film: Bruce Willis tossing bad guys from a high rise roof, blowing up public property, pissing just about everyone off, and letting loose with some stellar one liners (“Yippee kai yay, mother f*****,” anyone?). You’ll spend all of Christmas morning repeating “Now I have a machine gun. HO-HO-HO,” to as many relatives as you can after watching this holiday winner.

Brace yourselves, folks—you are about to witness the most testosterone-heavy 60 second clip you have ever, or likely will ever, witness. Seriously, this thing is the visual equivalent of eating a pound of raw meat, going to the gym for an hour, and then challenging a stranger to a bloody streetfight. Also, like those things, it’s kind of really dumb (but in a fun way). What am I referring to, you ask? The Expendables 2 trailer.

Honestly, you have to peep this clip to believe it, with its near-comic avalanche of clips featuring cinema’s most muscle-bound and steroid-pumped action heroes, with many returning from the last film, along with a few new faces, including the bearded visage of Chuck Norris (!), along with Jean-Claude van Damme as the film’s villain.

So what did you think? Ridiculous, no? Honestly, the trailer feels like it’s bordering on some kind of online fanfic by combining all of these new and old action stars into one film together, but, that said, it may end up being strangely hypnotizing and watchable, like the previous film, which was simply too silly not to enjoy.

The Expendables 2 will hit theaters in 2012.

The Rock and Bruce Willis Enliven G.I. Joe Retaliation Trailer

How do you make a sequel to a modestly received blockbuster like the first G.I. Joe? One: you hired Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis for your action star bonafides. Two: You open your trailer and film by slaughtering the majority of the cast from the previous film. That’s Channing Tatum in the first few moments, and then he seems to leave the film (whether temporarily or permanently it’s hard to say). Check out the trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation…

The films director is Jon M. Chu, who will be known to any fans of modern musicals, as he’s helmed the last two Step Up movies as well as the Justin Bieber documentary. This was his chance to break out of the musical ghetto, and it looks like he embraced the challenge.

The first film got mostly mixed reactions, with critics and audiences divided on whether it was stupid or stupid fun. It also did just okay at the box office. Going by the two to one theory of success, the film would have lost money if films like this aren’t also about the merchandise sales and perhaps that’s why we’re getting this one as well. It is an entertaining trailer, so it may wash the stigma of “giant toy advert” off it. Then again, maybe not.

New ‘Die Hard’ Sequel Will Be Titled ‘A Good Day To Die Hard’ (Seriously)

Oh, for the love of… Sigh. Because Die Harder, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and Live Free or Die Hard weren’t stupid enough titles for unnecessary sequels to a great film (and, let’s face it, Die Hard itself is kind of a goofy title, too), it was announced today by Fox CEO Tom Rothman that Die Hard 5 will be entitled A Good Day to Die Hard. Seriously. A… Good… Day… to… Die… Hard. A group of grown men and women, adults, came up with and approved of that title for a film. Really.

And, like just about every single other film in the franchise (except for Die Hard with a Vengeance) the film is about how a member of Bruce Willis’ immediate family is kidnapped and held hostage by a group of terrorist bad guys, and only The Bald One can get said family member back. Because, you know, INTERPOL’s probably busy or something, I guess.

That’s the title of the John Moore-directed sequel, which finds Willis’ John McClane traveling to Russia to rescue his son, John McClane Jr., then getting entangled in yet another high-octane adventure in a place where “nothing is as it seems.”

So this should be pretty interesting, despite the fact that it sounds exactly like the Liam Neeson film Taken, but, hey, whatever. With a title like A Good Day to Die Hard, this thing has gotta be so bad it’s good. Right? Right? I mean, it’s got to be, right?
