In recent weeks we’ve had two major casting developments for Marvel’s live action adaptation of Thor. Australian born Chris Hemsworth will play the Norse god, while British actor Tom Hiddleston will play his evil brother, Loki. With a dysfunctional family of this caliber many were wondering who would be cast as Odin, the father of the troubled twosome? According to Screenrant, there is speculation that veteran stage actor Brian Blessed my be in the running for the part.

Thor will be directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is no stranger to theater, film, or television. He has worked with Blessed on several stage to TV adaptations including Henry V (1989), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Hamlet (1996) and As You Like It (2006). Blessed is a Shakespearean vet, and has a resume that boasts of many respectable roles. The actor is known for his “booming, operatic voice”, and his “king-sized” persona onscreen. Sources are saying that he’s close or already cast in the part of Odin, who is also known as the King of Asgard.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some truth to this casting rumor. Blessed does have the presence, and talent to pull off not only a king, but a god. Branagh would be sticking to his theme of non-mainstream actors, which will allow him to manage his budget a lot easier. I think Blessed looks the part, do you?

Do you think Brian Blessed would make a good Odin, father or Thor and Loki?
