‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ New Character Posters Bring The Bland

Not to have its thunder stolen by The Avengers’ runaway box office, Prometheus’ mysterious buzz, The Amazing Spider-Man’s inevitable Fourth of July weekend dominion, or The Dark Knight Rises’ guaranteed success (or crappy posters), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 has dropped a series of bland character posters on the world today. Featuring a trio of the blank stares we’ve all come to know and moderately tolerate, the posters are below.

Hey, we’ll give them this—at least they’re better than the “Let’s write the words ‘Twilight’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’ over a smudge and then release it” thinking that went into the original teaser poster for the upcoming film, right?

Pay close attention and you’ll note that—gasp!—Kristen Stewart’s eyes are red, which means she totes a vampire now, you guyz. Totes! OMG, it’s juuuuuuust like the books. Which, in keeping with the last book, this film will revolve around some kind of vampire army and then a 20 year old muscle-bound werewolf falls in love with a newborn vampire baby and then Stewart will look at things blankly with her mouth slightly agape and set the feminist movement back about 50 years. Something like that.

Stewart costarts with Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner in Twilight: Seriously—How Many More Punctuation Marks Can We Awkwardly Wedge Into This Title?, which is set for a November 16, 2012 release.

Latest ‘Twilight’ Stills Reveal ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ Spoilers

Well, spoilers in the sense that what seemed readily apparent at the end of the first half of Twilight‘s Breaking Dawn is confirmed. Kristen Stewart‘s Bella is a vampire now. We had hope that writer/director Bill Condon would elevate the material a little, but at this point the movies are what they are. So check out the latest stills…

Are you ready? Cause they’re really exciting.

Boom:

Hey look, it’s that Taylor Lautner kid giving his “Blue Steel!” Wow, do you think he’s going to turn into a werewolf or something shortly after this, or is he just posing for his yearbook? That’s a look that says “maybe he’s really angry, or maybe he just wants a sandwich.” We’d bet Lautner made this face for hours after someone read him the reviews of Abduction.

But wait, there’s a little more:

Look at the happy couple. Question to the Twilight fans, we’ve seen the first film, but haven’t read the books, do they get to have sex again? Does it come up? We hope so, because the violent sex between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson was easily the most entertaining part of the last movie. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits theaters November 16, and we can’t wait.

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ Releases Laziest Poster Ever

Apparently, when a film franchise can make hundreds of millions of dollars on name recognition alone, you don’t have to put a lot of money, attention or detail into little things like advertising—specifically, poster art. Case in point: The Twilight franchise, wherein the new teaser poster for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 might feature one of the laziest poster designs in recent memory.

Apparently, Summit Entertainment couldn’t even be bothered to slap together the quickly airbrushed heads of Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson together; instead, we get the overlong title of the film, and some swirly, out of focus blurs, colors and smudges. Call it The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2: Photoshopped in 30 Minutes or Less, if you like.

That said, Summit Entertainment probably doesn’t need to do much to advertise the massively anticipated final chapter in its series of films about a teenager and the sparkly corpse and man-dog that love her, so a rather lazily composed poster is easy to forgive. Honestly, at this point, all Summit has do to is scribble the film’s title and release date in a handwritten scrawl across some store-bought poster board and they’d still clear $100 million the first weekend. Never underestimate the appeal of sparkly corpses, people.

‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part II’ Is Going Back For Reshoots

Reshoots are usually buzzed about because it’s often a sign that a film isn’t working, but director Bill Condon has gone out of his way to assure Twilight fans that the recently announced reshoots for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II are just par for the course. He also hints that the film is about to unleash its full trailer shortly. Check out his statement below…

Condon suggests that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will be involved with the reshoots, but makes no mention of Taylor Lautner, which also suggests this is just a touch up or two. As the two-parter was shot as one long movie, this really shouldn’t be a surprise. Here’s Condon’s note, from Facebook:

Hello Twihards!

Greetings from Los Angeles, where we’re hard at work on BREAKING DAWN, PART TWO. It’s truly crazy to think that it’s been a year since we wrapped production in Vancouver, since for those of us in the editing room the work has never stopped.

A film is a lot like a puzzle, with each piece – each shot, no matter how brief – needing to fit exactly with the ones around it. Our Part Two puzzle is finally coming into full view, and in a few weeks we’ll be heading back north to pick up some additional shots – the last tiny missing pieces. We’re not shooting any new scenes or dialogue, just some technical work with some of our cast and stunt actors.

I am really looking forward to being back on set with some of the friends I’ve made on my Twilight journey, like the great Guillermo Navarro, our cinematographer, and his crew. And yes, Rob and Kristen will be there too, to pop in those gold contacts one last time…

I’m excited to report that before too long we’ll have another trailer for you to decode. And wait until you see the first posters — they’re unlike any “Twilight” images you’ve seen before. And then November 16th will be upon us and the final film will be yours!

Reshoots are often seen as a bad thing, but that’s usually because they’re done after a test screening shows the movie’s problems. It’s possible this is more than what he says, but it seems unlikely.

In the annals of reshoots, sometimes the new scenes work, and sometimes they’re just used as scotch tape to cut sections of a film that were scrapped. Woody Allen notoriously reshot one of his films (September) in its entirety, while recently we’ve heard word on both John Carter and Men in Black III doing extensive reshoots. But you know what also went back to get more footage? The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It seems that bad buzz iss saved for films that are already troubled. The film is due out November 16.

Just one week ago, we received the latest in that most obnoxious marketing trend: the trailer for the trailer—a commercial advertising that we’ll be seeing a commercial soon. That fact that it was a teaser for a teaser of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 didn’t make it any less irritating. But now, Twi-Hards, your wait is over, and you can now view the full teaser for the upcoming film in which Kristen Stewart continues to not act, but this time she red eyes. Totes red eyes, you guys!

View the teaser below, in which Stewart’s Bella Swan is now a vampire, leading her new vamp hubby Edward to declare, “Now we’re the same temperature,” which is both a comment on the fact that they are now as cold as corpses, as well as a nice unintentional reference to the cold and wooden performances that litter this franchise.

So there you have it—Bella running around the woods at superhuman speed, Bella sporting red eyes, Bella fetishizing her ring, Bella getting ready to gore a defenseless deer while violently draining its body of life, blood, and sinew—everything a teen girl would want to see in the final installment of the Twilight franchise (at least, of course, until Lionsgate/Summit start making ever more of these things). The film premieres on November 16, 2012.

Teaser For The Trailer For Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

Oh man. It’s almost here. The end of Twilight as we know it. Breaking Dawn Part 2 will be released November 16, but until that time, fans will have wait patiently with small glimpses of footage, and haters will be stuck counting the days until it’s all finally over. To tide one of those parties over there’s now a teaser for the trailer that will be attached to The Hunger Games. Check it out…

As with all teaser for teasers, there’s very little here, expect glimpses at your leads Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. But this is obviously from the new film as we see that Stewart’s Bella can move at vampire speeds. Other than that… well it is a teaser for a teaser.

Calling this the end may be a bit of an exaggeration, but many involved seem happy to walk away from the madness. Stewart is moving on in interesting directions (between On the Road and Snow White and the Hunstman), Pattinson is in the next David Cronenberg movie, and Taylor Lautner might actually get another project off the ground at some point. That’s possible. Sure. Even if a majority of the main cast is moving onwards and upwards, piles and piles and cash have been known to sway even the most stout of objections. From Marlon Brando to Sean Connery, actors tend to have a figure that they can’t refuse.

And then there’s talks of more movies. Perhaps the Cullen family can be brought in as well. We’ve yet to see what happens when this cast isn’t working, and a new Twilight film might be just the break they need from signing booths in three years time.

With year-end worst of lists, it’s rarely fun to pick on films that are dead and buried. Is it really worth rehashing why I Am Number Four or Apollo 18 are bad movies? In five years no one’s going to remember those films, to say nothing of Shark Night or One Day. in fact it’s likely everyone’s forgotten them. What’s much more disappointing and terrible is cinematic good will squandered. And so here is our list of the ten worst films and trends in cinema in 2011:

10. The Artist (as an Oscar Contender)

There’s nothing all that wrong with Michel Hazanavicius’s The Artist as a film. A throwback, it attempts to recreate the look and feel of a silent movie with some laughs and some forced melodrama. But as an end of the year film that is now looking like the Best Picture winner to beat, it’s all wrong. The filmmakers don’t seem to really love silent movies and so the film works more as a homage to something they’ve never directly experienced than a period movie. Perhaps that’s the point, but a light soufflé such as this can’t stand the heavier implications of greatness. If it does go on to become one of the best pictures of the year it will join the class of films like Driving Miss Daisy or Crash as “things that seemed like a good idea at the time” or “what the heck were they thinking?” winners. And in a year as rich with cinematic treasures as 2011, that’s just sad.

9. Hall Pass

Bobby and Peter Farrelly have unleashed two terrible cinematic nuggets on us this year. The first would be the trailer for The Three Stooges, but more painfully (and much more feature length) would be Hall Pass. A film that seems to suggest that its filmmakers are on the verge of divorce, Hall Pass is neither unfunny or insightful. The Farrelly brothers had the perfect mixture of gross-out and heart in There’s Something about Mary, and have spent the last decade trying to reproduce the formula. At this point, they should stop.

8. Thor

Though most would argue that The Green Lantern is the lesser of the two, Thor – in some ways – stands in for all these recent films that function more as franchise empire-building than cinema. Routine and poorly staged, Thor falls apart by using one of the most boring conventions of big-budget cinema: the main character can’t use his superpowers for an hour of the film’s running time because it’s too expensive. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are perfect casting, and there’s some beautiful sets, but the end result is a film that exists to get viewers to The Avengers, and there’s nothing so offensive as a film that functions as a trailer for the next one. If The Green Lantern has a saving grace, it’s that it doesn’t seem to inspire future projects as readily.

7. Faithful Adaptations

Speaking of, this year we’ve had films like Harry Potter and Breaking Dawn bifurcate their narratives to supposedly service fans, and we’re about to get David Fincher’s take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, where the book was too successful for Fincher to strip it down to what worked and what doesn’t. We’re in a culture where fans are being spoon-fed adaptions. The end result – while none of these films are terrible in and of themselves – are movies that don’t so much function as films proper but either collections of scenes that add up to a translation of the books – or a cliff notes version – with no sense of pacing. There’s a great scene in the classic film The Bad and the Beautiful where a director tells the producer that you have to choose what are the most important scenes in a film, and it appears that none of these movies have had to make those decisions. And on top of that, it’s simply a craven way to milk more money out of a popular franchise.

6. Another Earth

Another Earth is an art-house film that was a Sundance triumph, and represents the worst sort of pretentious meandering drivel that often passes for deep. “What if there was a parallel Earth where maybe our alternate selves didn’t make the same mistakes?” Maybe you should learn better film-making skills and drop the philosophy 101 courses. It’s also a film that’s hit a lot of best of lists, but it’s painfully obvious narrative suggests that too often low and no budget films get passes for having ideas.

5. The Change-Up

Body swap comedies were the fad in the late 80’s (meaning it spawned about four films), and so perhaps the genre was due for a re-imagining, but the end result feels slapped together, and makes you feel sorry for Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde for appearing in such an empty and mean-spirited comedy. Throw in some over the top feces humor, and CGI nudity, you get one of the least enjoyable comedies in since Hall Pass. There’s nothing so unfunny as an unfunny comedy, and with such talented performers, it’s a travesty.

4. Cowboys and Aliens

With such a talented cast, it’s impressive that Jon Favreau managed to lay such a goose egg. A non-western, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford are wasted in what amounts to a chance for talented people to dress up like cowboys and waste money. The plot is terrible, but more offensively, there’s a good movie in there somewhere. This probably kills the chance for any reasonably budgeted western from the studios for the next three years. Thanks.

3. 3-D

Though 2010 took the cake for terrible 3-D post conversions (last minute jobs like The Last Airbender and Clash of the Titans), we still saw many of the summer’s biggest films in 3-D for little reason other than a ticket price bump. There’s nothing wrong with the format per se, but after a year of bad 3-D in such films as Thor, Fright Night, Conan the Barbarian, Pirates 4, the Greens (Hornet and Lantern) it’s something that needs to be done by people who are paying attention (like Martin Scorsese or – god help us – Michael Bay), and not slapped on to increase ticket sales. As we’ve seen, it often doesn’t help.

2. J. Edgar

With the recent SAG nominations it’s quite possible that J. Edgar will be an awards contender, even though the film died at the box office. There may be a critical divide on this film, as some have noted those over 40 seem to enjoy the film more. But if we are to accept the argument that Clint Eastwood is a truly great director (and the man has made at least two masterpieces), then this Wikipedia page summary of J. Edgar Hoover’s life and times deserves to be lambasted as a terrible work. Bad old age make-up aside, the film never feels like it has a spine so much a collection of J. Edgar’s greatest hits assembled in a way where sum is much less than the parts. Naomi Watts, Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer waste themselves in a film that seems to have been made simply as Oscar bait.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

One of the laziest and least imaginatively staged blockbusters of all time, On Stranger Tides is half baked every step of the way, from its nonsensical plotting to barely awake performances from Johnny Depp. Directed – terribly at that – by Rob Marshall, it was the least successful of the series domestically, and yet crossed a billion dollars worldwide. Which means we’re getting more. What makes this the worst movie of the year is that everyone involved knew they could half-ass it and still make money. And there is nothing so offensive as successful people making crap simply because they know they can get away with it.

Box Office Predictions: New Year’s Eve Celebrates Early

This Fall has been modest in comparison to many other recent years, in terms of major film releases. On paper there were a number of films that could have been $100 Million plus titles, but only Breaking Dawn has done blockbuster business, and has remained on top of the box office for three weeks. That’s going to change with the release of New Year’s Eve. Still, it’s been a slow, slow Fall.

It’s hard not to be slightly disappointed with the numbers if you’re a studio person. Films like Puss in Boots, Tower Heist, Happy Feet Two and The Muppets are decidedly underperforming – especially in relation to cost. Some may be saved by international ticket sales, but with the flood of Christmas pictures is about to hit, perhaps this year will end with more of a whimper than a bang.

The five films that should get to over $100 Million are Alvin and the Chipmunks 3, Sherlock Holmes 2, Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Adventures of Tintin and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. All of which hit theaters within eight days of each other. Now, of course it’s possible that all could perform strongly as there’s only so much crossover, but still. An outlier would be something like War Horse or Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, both of which will have their fates decided by critical reception.

We’ll get into more of this when their dates approach, but after the number of pictures that underperformed this year in general, and the last two months in particular, it’s hard to say if any of those films are guaranteed hits. Mission: Impossible is probably in the best boat in that the MI films have always done well internationally, and it’s likely this will follow that pattern. But Sherlock Holmes is one of those franchises that doesn’t make that much sense. I guess if it’s the Robert Downey Jr. show, then I get it, but the first film made $200 domestic and $500 worldwide, so it’s not that it isn’t viable. It’s just hard to picture people excited by it. Chipmunks is its own phenomenon. The first film was terrible. Both films so far have done over $200 Million. Kids films.

And then we have this weekend, with Fox unleashing The Sitter. You have to feel a bit bad for David Gordon Green as he’s going to have two flops this year between this and Your Highness. Once one of the strongest voices in independent cinema, his work for hire product in Hollywood has not had the same sort of traction. And this is also bad for Jonah Hill – though he should rebound a bit with 21 Jump Street -as this should do less than Get Him to the Greek (which ended up around $60 Million). With The Sitter’s 81 minute run time, you can tell the studio wanted it as short as humanly possible. They are not proud of this film and they’re dumping it.

New Year’s Eve follows up Valentine’s Day, which was a big hit for Warner Brothers and director Gary Marhsall. Why mess with the formula? That had a great opening weekend ($56 Million) and then fell off quickly. This doesn’t have the same heat, and most people would rather be at a party than watching a movie on New Year’s eve, which makes this a harder sell. The success of a film like this involves how quickly they shot out their cast. If you’ve got A-listers working for four or five days it’s likely they got a nice package, but it could keep the film’s costs down. Valentine’s Day supposedly cost around $50 Million, so this is probably around that number, but I don’t think this is going to do as well.

So the weekend breaks down like this:

New Year’s Eve – $27.5 Million
The Sitter – $10 Million
Breaking Dawn – $7.8 Million
Hugo – $7.5 Million
The Muppets – $7.3 Million

The Sitter could go lower. Next weekend the big guns show up.

Box Office Predictions: Say, Do You Want to Watch The Muppets Again…

Between limited releases and big studio launches, there are very few weekends where there isn’t something new out. But the weekend after Thanksgiving – much like the first weekend of a new year – is considered a dead spot. There’s already a vacuum created by the holiday weekend being over, people are likely recuperating from their families, and the only studio film being released (on nine screens) is Shame. The only possible benefit is to The Muppets, which may have enough goodwill to take the top spot from Breaking Dawn. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Breaking Dawn has already made half a billion worldwide. This happened in ten days. Likely it will not make as much in the rest of its run, but such is the modern box office. It may not make it to $300 million domestic, which the last two did, though it should be close to $250 Million by the end of the weekend. Next weekend offers two new films, so now it’s all about hanging out in theaters. The heat is off. The film should get to over $280 domestic, but if it does cross the $300 mark it’s because they wanted it to. As the production budget was supposedly $110 Million, the film is already over four times cost, so the end number is about pride at this point. But where it has had three weekends to make hay, the summer release of the last film meant that it could play against slightly less competition. By Christmas, this should be off a lot of screens.This weekend, expect a number around $15 Million.

The Muppets was well received, all things, so it’s possible that stragglers might come this weekend and give it a boost. Kids films can play long, though it’s possible that Arthur Christmas will keep playing into the holiday, and if people are going to a mall theater, Christmas may play along with the shopping. But Arthur doesn’t seem to have that traction, while Hugo - which opened on a little less than 1300 screens – is expanding and has been well reviewed so it’s going to have the better weekend hold. The Muppets should be in a good position to get close ifnot trump Breaking Dawn.

But it’s an off weekend. And that’s that, so let’s get to it:

The Muppets - $14 Million
Breaking Dawn - $13.9 Million
Hugo – $10 Million
Arthur Christmas – $6.5 Million
Happy Feet Two – $5 Million

To win the weekend, Disney needs to keep it up with their television advertising. They would like The Muppets to return as a viable franchise, and the best way to prove that is if they can do over $100 Million domestically. The film was reasonably cheap, but the marketing push was not. It’s also possible that The Descendants could creep into the top five as it’s been doing stellar weekday business. The better it does, the stronger its Oscar chances.

‘Breaking Dawn Part 1′ Is Giving Audience Members Seizures

Oh my. Because Breaking Dawn Part 1 isn’t bad enough already, featuring as it does a tween fantasia in which a blank young girl finds happiness by abstaining from sex until marrying the much older and emotionally controlling vampire with goofy hair who loves her, the movie is now giving people seizures.

“At least two audience members in separate cities have gone into seizures during the movie’s climactic birth scene,” because, well, who wouldn’t pass out when a weird vampire baby pops out of Kristen Stewart? I mean, the sentence alone makes me dizzy.

Actually, the birth scene in Breaking Dawn Part 1 is edited together with sequences of “flashing red, black, and white images that trigger photosensitive epilepsy.” Thus far, at least two members of the audience in two separate cities (one in Utah, one in California) have had seizures during the scene. Also interesting? Both victims are men.

What does this mean? Either they were simply freaked out by the monstrous vampire baby-thing being born, or they realized that they were actually grown men who had paid to see Breaking Dawn Part 1. All that can be sure, though, is that these two guys are probably the greatest boyfriends in the whole world, having been dragged to a teenage vampire movie by their gals, only to suffer a seizure for their troubles. Stiff upper lips, brave lads.

Box Office Predictions: Can Breaking Dawn Hold Off Children(‘s Films)?

Last weekend Breaking Dawn made a ton of cash, which was a surprise to no one. But not everyone who wants to see the latest blockbuster sequel goes opening weekend, and so though the fall off should be heavy (over 50%, possibly over 60%, and just as likely near 70%) it may be able to fend off the newcomers, which will probably hurt each other and let Twilight win. What must have happened is that no one blinked about this weekend, as there’s three films aimed at parents and children hitting theaters: The Muppets, Arthur Christmas and Hugo. On top of a week-old Happy Feet Two. It’s a Children’s film blood bath is what it is.

As for Breaking Dawn, it’s going to be over $200 Million by end of weekend. I’m impressed and slightly baffled by people who wait to see these films, as it strikes me that with any major franchise seeing it right away is the point. Perhaps in the later weeks it’s the hardcore fans seeing it again (or for the last time on the big screen), but I don’t know if the young women raised on this series have that same pull toward going to the theater repeatedly that infected the generation that made Titanic the biggest film of all time (until Avatar). I don’t know how many people of a younger generation can have that same thrill – partly because the movie’s out on home video months later. Because until home video became a driving force, hit films would be in theaters for a year (at least), and the home video presentation was not very good. Though there are always stories about the hard core faithful going to see a film they love four or five times over a weekend, I don’t know if the people who loved Titanic would have gone back as much in the DVD era. Film itself may be slipping away, and if it is, you should sign this petition if you want to show some support.

Why the heck didn’t anyone blink this weekend? This end of year got crowded with stupid. I can see why The Muppets didn’t blink – it’s a family film, and they obviously have the best case to be made for being a hit. Parents who grew up on the show and movies may not so reluctantly take their kids. Of the new films it should open the best, though Disney paid through the nose with marketing on this one. The dirty secret is that an “A” Picture can spend upwards of $100 Million and over to market a picture, and even though the production budget on the film is listed at $50 Million or less, it may have made sense to spend that ad money because it’s not just the movies they’re selling with the advertising, but also the Muppets themselves, which have toys and DVDs and games and books. so even if the film does $120 Million in total, if they’ve relaunched the brand, it’s possible that the sales of the ephemera will amount to much much more than the ticket sales.

I get why Arthur Christmas didn’t blink. They’re basically following The Polar Express blueprint of having a month before Christmas to play slow and steady. Realistically it should have come out a couple weeks earlier against Jack and Jill and The Immortals, but Jack is also a Sony picture, so it gets complicated. And you can’t wait any longer as the picture is dead the minute Christmas is over, so you want to have a month to find an audience. The question is if it will pick up enough interest and business to keep playing. Sony didn’t seem to work too hard on this one, and it’s possible they won’t give it the support to keep playing. But it’s also possible that if they get to about $20 Million for the five day, they could – could – do over $100 Million domestic.

I didn’t get why Hugo didn’t blink, unless you look at Paramount’s schedule. They’ve had three movies back-to-back-to-back in October (Footloose, Paranormal Activity 3 and Puss in Boots) then they have Young Adult, Tintin and Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol in December. Paramount is not a studio that usually puts out that many films in a short period of time (often they’ll have a twelve picture year), and they have done well to not step on their own tail too much. Hugo is not only a hard sell, it looks like a co-production where Paramount only has the domestic rights. It’s a similar situation to Tintin, but with the Nickelodeon support that’s a much easier sell than a master director doing a kids movie. I’m not saying that Hugo‘s being put out this weekend to die, but if the cat is in the bag, the bag is in the river.so why not chase holiday weekend business and hope good reviews let it float just long enough to be replaced by Tintin or Ghost Protocol?

If you removed one of these pieces. it’s possible that The Muppets would do more business than Breaking Dawn when families want to see a movie to get the heck out of the house. With all three it might be close, but Twilight‘s got the edge.

So let’s do a little three-day predicting:

Breaking Dawn - $40.1 Million
The Muppets - $33 Million
Happy Feet Two - $14.4 Million
Arthur Christmas - $12.7 Million
Hugo – $7.5 Million

All three new pictures this weekend are great, by the way. But since they’re all kid-centric, it’s possible that these numbers could be dreadfully wrong. We could see Muppet support or family boredom frustration bring the numbers up on any of the new pictures. Hard to say. It’s a long holiday weekend.

Though there was never any doubt the box office for the latest Twilight was going to be strong, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 grossed $30.3 Million in midnight shows, making it the second highest midnight gross ever. The champion is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which did $43.6 Million earlier this year. This bodes well for the film which could do anywhere from $120 Million to $150 this weekend.

The question – as I raised in my box office piece – is how front loaded is it? We already know there’s numbers of sold out shows during the day, but when it comes to franchise film, seeing it first is paramount. For Potter, that opening night business amounted to about a quarter of its weekend gross. If the multiplier was the same for this one, this would do around $120 Million.

The big difference between the two is that this isn’t the final chapter of the Twilight franchise – that comes next year, and that seems to put even more pressure on seeing it as soon as humanly possible than any other chapter. Regardless, the fan base is the fan base, and this will end up doing around $300 Million when all is said and done – as the last two have. But with international numbers already strong, this is gearing up to be one of the most successful films of the year.
