If you could assemble a cast that includes Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Christopher Meloni, and Joe Lo Truglio, you’d have an A-list comedy on your hands these days, and that may be what you get if they make Wet Hot American Summer 2, the long-proposed sequel to 2000′s cult comedy. Co-writer and star of the original Michael Showalter said it’s definitely happening and everyone is on board.

Showalter said so on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live last night, and said so with great authority. This is after the recent live table reading of the original film’s script that took place at San Francisco’s Sketchfest. The cast for Wet Hot American Summer also included Janeane Garofolo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Ian Black, A.D. Miles, Ken Marino, Molly Shannon, Judah Friedlander and Marguerite Moreau, many of whom were at the recent reading.

When Showalter offers no hesitations, it suggests that this has been in the works for a while, and that they have some form of financing. Director David Wain has a new film coming out shortly called Wanderlust (with Rudd), and if that does good business, surely WHAS 2 will be next on deck. The first film was barely released by the now-defunct USA Pictures, and found an audience on home video. It’s hilarious, and well worth checking out.

You smell like a burger, I don’t like you any more?

Well, he’s not exactly bald, and doesn’t quite have the screen presence of Gene Hackman, but it looks like Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise may have found its ultimate nemesis for Supes—Bradley Cooper as the follicly-challenged genius baddy Lex Luthor. Spoilers ahead!

Last year, it leaked that Luthor was supposed to be a major part of the early drafts of the upcoming Superman film. However, after rewrite after rewrite, Luthor was phased out in favor of General Zod, a Kryptonian tyrant (you know, “KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!” from Superman II). A rumor has begun to circulate, though, that Luthor has wormed his way back into the Man of Steel script in the form of a cameo, which would set up the bald bad guy as a villain for future installments of the franchise.

In the initial drafts of the script, Lex appeared near the end of the film “to force the evil Kryptonians through a Phantom Zone. He then considered doing the same to Superman, but chickened out at the last minute.”

And, it looks as if Snyder has settled on Bradley Cooper to step into the iconic role previously held by Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey (although the less said about Spacey’s hammy portrayal, the better). Let’s just hope he doesn’t mind the bald look.

What do you think of Cooper as Lex Luthor?

1994′s The Crow was a box office success, and spawned a number of (mostly) direct to video sequels. But part of the appeal of that version was its gothic nature, enhanced by the tragedy of Brandon Lee dying during production. Whatever direction Juan Carlos Fresnadillo‘s remake is going, it doesn’t seem to embrace that original spirit. The Hollywood Reporter has received word that Bradley Cooper is out, and the two most likely replacements are Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum.

Eric – the main character of The Crow – was killed on the night before Halloween along with his fiancee. He wakes up a year later as an member of the undead there to get his revenge, with a crow his protector/soul (he can’t be hurt, but if the crow dies, he dies again). It seems for the remake the revenge aspects will be played up, and perhaps the look of the main character (who paints himself in a harlequin mask) will be changed if they are going in a less gothic direction. How could they not be with these leading man choices?

But if you take out the goth, what’s the point? Perhaps this will be a complete redress of the material, which means not adapting the comic books or previous entries. That reminds me of Dead Heat, a late 1980′s buddy cop comedy where both partners end up as zombies trying to solve their own murders before their time runs out. It’s not that Wahlberg or Tatum can’t play hurt and/or depressed, but that’s not what makes them fun to watch on screen, and nothing sounds less appealing than watching either spending two hours pouting. The loss of a leading man has sunk many a projects, so if no one gets signed soon, this may yet go away.

Do you think the original is a sacred text, or do you welcome this sort of redo?

The Hangover gang’s all back for another round of waking up and having no idea how bad things got the night before. For The Hangover Part II, the challenge – as a comedy – is to find a compelling narrative to return to a similar well. Most comic sequels end up redressing the original premise in one way or another to do it again, here the invention is the new location. Can it match up to the original?

The Players

Directed by: Todd Phillips

Written by: Phillips, Craig Mazin, Scot Armstrong

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Paul Giamatti

Cinematography by: Lawrence Sher

The Plot

Stu (Helms) is getting married to Lauren (Jamie Chung) in Thailand with her humorless father and young but super-smart brother Teddy (Mason Lee) in attendance. Stu wants his old friends Phil and Doug (Cooper, Bartha respectively), and is forced to drag along Alan (Galifianakis). After the wedding rehearsal, the boys end up on the beach promising to have only one beer. The next morning they’re in a hotel they’ve never been to before with no power, a monkey, a severed finger, Mr. Chow (Jeong), and no clue where Teddy is. They then have to retrace their steps to find the young boy, but as – they’re warned repeatedly – “Bangkok has him now.”

The Good

Todd Phillips actually directs his comedies: Though Bridesmaids is a much better film in every way – like many of its ilk – the filmmaking in that film has little panache. In fact, most of the post-Judd Apatow comic directors have embraced Judd’s point-and-shoot approach. Phillips directs the movie with an eye toward cinema, and when there are set pieces involving a car chase, and a drug dealing monkey it feels put together and interesting unlike some of the more “is this intentionally or unintentionally bad” action sequences in some other more recent comedies.

It’s Transgressive: Though the first film featured Vegas, it never got that seedy. Here the film goes into darker places than the original – hopefully to raise the stakes – which means that the jokes go in some terrible places. Though the ending glosses over some of that, the film isn’t afraid to shoot its heroes, and have them engage in some behavior that may make the audience squirm. This leads to the biggest laughs in the film.

The Bad

It’s the Same Movie: Though the set up was bound to be similar, their adventures are pretty much the same (you can substitute Thai ladyboys for Heather Graham, etc), and the film ends with a photo montage after a cameo by a performer from the first film – who shows up and is painfully not funny. Because the structure is almost exactly the same, it doesn’t have the surprise of the first film, and so they’re way less excitement to how it’s all going to wrap up. Zach Galifianakis no longer gets to sneak up and surprise you this time, here you get to watch him riff on the character – which still has moments but isn’t as winning. We’ve seen him do this before. The moments where the film does do different jokes or beats are where the film succeeds, but as evinced from the trailer, they hit so many of the same beats that if you have a familiarity with the first film, you’re bound to see this as diminishing returns.

The First Film Worked Because it was Unlike Other Comedies: What made The Hangover pop in 2009 was partly because cinema was awash in a wave of Judd Apatow and company films that had become the dominate form. The problem with this film is that it’s now familiar, especially between the first film and Due Date. Phillips has a style and it works, but the more he does it the less the returns – he’s getting as over-exposed as Apatow.

The Transgression: The only thing the film has going for it is that it goes to some darker places, but in most ways it backs off from them. From the sex, to how the boys blacked out, to the severed finger, to someone getting shot, there seem to be consequences to their actions that eventually disappear. In that way the film is both more and less dangerous than it should be. The idea of dropping characters off in a place where they don’t speak the language is great… too bad they never have to deal with anyone who doesn’t speak English.

Overall

The Hangover Part II functions more as a remake than sequel – there was really no story to tell, and it would be hard to justify getting these characters back together again, regardless. But as they couldn’t find a more interesting angle than “let’s just do the second one in Bangkok” you get exactly what you’d expect, for better or ill. To that end, it’s not as perfunctory as the recent Pirates sequel, but that’s rather faint praise. That the film is going to make at least $200 Million dollars domestically means that the sequel was a smart move on Warner Brothers part. At the same time, the film may end up being more of a Pyrrhic victory if it annoys audiences and spoils the goodwill of the first one. If it does do over $200, then a third one will surely be in order, and likely it’ll be the sort of film where everyone says they learned from the mistakes they made on the second one.

Rating: 4/10

Look at this face? Do you see this guy listening to Bauhaus? Bradley Cooper comes off more as a Rush or Van Halen fan. Nothing against Rush or Van Halen. Probably some rap, really liked Pearl Jam. Pop music. You don’t suspect that this guy can do goth. You don’t suspect he was a regular at midnights of Rocky Horror Picture Show. But Cooper is supposedly circling The Crow reboot to be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cooper is an actor, so perhaps he’ll show some range.

This is weird on a number of different levels. Cooper has cultivated an attitude and a look that verges on – and sometimes throttles over – being smug. Nothing against Cooper as a performer, but earnest and mopey don’t seem to be in his wheelhouse. He may be likable, but it’s in contrast to being the guy who seems on top of everything (until he isn’t).

Perhaps Cooper is looking for a franchise, and The Crow could be that as it stars an undead avenger. But – cinematically – it must be said the reason why the first film was as successful as it was is partly based on morbid curiosity. Star Brandon Lee was killed on set in a stunt snafu, where a blank accidentally had some discharge in it. This was doubly fascinating because his father was Bruce Lee, who also died young under mysterious circumstances.

I can see why the property might seem great to reboot as it has led to a number of sequels and DTV spin-offs, but again, they were cashing in on something that was unrepeatable. The appeal of the character has been maintained in the Hot Topic goth set. Cooper doesn’t seem to have any Joy Division swagger, so by casting him the picture would be alienating the base. If Cooper is cast, it suggests that he couldn’t land a superhero.

Do you like the first Crow?

Warner Brothers has been relatively tight-lipped about Todd Phillips’s The Hangover Part II and its plot details, but more is emerging thanks to the full trailer, which just debuted. It shows that Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are back in a similar position of not remembering the night before and this time it’s not Justin Bartha they’ve lost, but a young boy. Also returning is Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow. Take a look…

For some reason this trailer reminds me more of Dude, Where’s My Car than the first film the first film did. Perhaps that was sold a little differently – though arguably both have similar plots – but that’s definitely the vibe I get here. Maybe it’s the monastery.

This should be a monster hit as audiences loved the first film. It made $277 Million dollars domestically, and this looks like more of the same. That said, it also looks more labored – which is inherent to the very nature of making this sequel, but surely the foreign location and the number of options for making terrible late night decisions that were unexplored in the first film should lead to big laughs.

I’ve heard that the film has been testing very well, and everything’s lined up for this to be one of the big summer titles. Regardless of whether it works or not, the film is going to open.

Are you sick of Wolf Pack jokes?

Yes, $19 million is a modest amount when we’re speaking Box Office terms, but this weekend $19 million was enough to make Bradley Cooper‘s Limitless No. 1. The Hangover star beat out Matthew McConaughey‘s The Lincoln Lawyer and Battle: Los Angeles (the war film didn’t do as well as we had predicted).

Also new this weekend was Universal’s Paul, which stars plenty of hilarious people like Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Wiig (the list goes on). Despite falling at No. 5, the sci-fi comedy was neck and neck all weekend long with The Lincoln Lawyer and just barely lost out by a couple of thousand.

In the first time in months, the top ten list is free of The King’s Speech. Ladies and gentlemen, on it’s 17th week, the Oscar winning film is no longer part of the top ten. That was one long streak.

What did you watch this weekend?

Get ready to go on a drug binge this weekend with director Neil Burger’s adaptation of the Alan Glynn novel, Limitless starring Bradley Cooper as a drugged up NZT addict. I received an NZT pill a while ago with a key containing an ad with Bradley Cooper selling NZT — I have yet to try it, but if the experience is anything like it is in the film, it could be fun! Find out more about the film below…

The Players:

Director: Neil Burger

Writer: Leslie Dixon (screenplay) and Alan Glynn (novel)

Actors: Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish, Andrew Howard, Anna Friel

Original Music by: Paul Leonard-Morgan and Nico Muhly

Cinematography by: Jo Willems

Official Plot:

A paranoia-fueled action thriller about an unpublished writer whose life is transformed by a top-secret smart drug that allows him to use 100% of his brain and become a perfect version of himself. His enhanced abilities soon attract shadowy forces that threaten his new life in this darkly comic and provocative film.

The Good:

Visuals: You could tell that someone knew that just telling this story wasn’t going to be enough, it was how they were going show it that would sell it. The visuals in this film take it from indie drama, to intense, action, thriller. From the great use of lighting (which is a great example as to why DPs and Gaffers are so important), to the effects, to taking a simple shot of him cleaning his apartment and making it interesting; they did a good job of taking a story about a character on drugs and making it visually interesting. Though some of the shots were excessive (the letters falling all around him as he writes) the overall effects were something that really helped keep the pace of the film going during those plot building moments and give the audience that “something more” they’re always looking for.

Surprising Moments: There are a number of surprising moments that come out of people acting like real people in an extraordinary situation. Despite the fact that this film is basically a fantasy, they managed to ground the character. As a result, the bigger moments were more surprising and had more impact on the audience.

Dark Sense of Humor: This is something that’s hard to sell to mainstream audiences because often times people just “don’t get it” or it falls flat. They did a great job of balancing the darkness in this film and bringing out the humor in seemingly unfunny situations. It was surprising to see them take such bold risks throughout the film and then make jokes about it, but it kept you engaged in the film and the characters.

The Bad:

Over Voice-Overed: I remember a scriptwriting teacher telling me “never write voice-overs unless you have to” — now this film was fast paced enough and they used the voice-overs well enough that about 80% of them were great and actually added some much desired emotion or humor to the film. But, there were a few times that it felt like there was unneeded explanations that made you feel like certain ideas were being forced on you.

The Ugly Girl: His ex-wife (played by the beautiful Anna Friel) appears in the beginning of the film, looking like her charming self, and later on they meet up and he’s supposed to not be recognize because of how bad she looks. Though she limps after the first scene, she basically just looks like Anna Friel without make-up on, some obvious bad lighting and a horrible sweater – from his reaction I’d expect her skin to the falling off and her nose to be missing. For such a dark film, I was surprised they didn’t get more ugly!

Lots of Pieces to the Puzzle: And not all of them tied together. Though they all add up, they’re not necessarily all needed. Some of the trips around the world driving fancy cars and jumping off cliffs, though fun to watch and undoubtedly will entertain audiences didn’t really help the story, it just made it a more pretty picture. Again, it’s not bad, it’s just kind of obvious fluff in a film with a lot of actual substance.

Overall:

This is one of those films that didn’t leave me overly excited as I walked out of the theater BUT it was a fun ride while I was in it and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a slightly edgy, humorous, action packed ride, with a bit of social commentary that goes well with popcorn. It’s definitely a great escape movie for those of you needing to be distracted from… whatever you need to be distracted from.

Rating: 6.5/10

See Limitless in theaters March 18th!

After last weekends solid #1 opening, Battle: Los Angeles will fight to keep to win the box office this weekend as it see’s competition from Seth Rogen’s Paul, the Bradley Cooper Thriller Limitless, and the Matthew McConaughey adult-thriller The Lincoln Lawyer. In all, it should be fun a weekend at the box office. And now for our predictions…

#1: Battle: Los Angeles

After a better then expected opening weekend, Battle: Los Angeles hopes to claim the throne once again this weekend. There will be some tough competition as Battle: Los Angeles will be competing with not one, but two adult thrillers – Limitless and The Lincoln Lawyer . However, Battle has been holding up somewhat well during the weekday and should be able to hold on to the #1 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $16-17 Opening Weekend

#2 Limitless

Bradley Cooper looks to solidify his status as the next A-List leading man this weekend along side co-star Robert De Niro in the adult action thriller Limitless. Break out status for Limitless seems unlikely as poor reviews, a generic title will certainly hinder it’s opening weekend gross. However, the combination of De Niro/Cooper should be enough to lift the film to a modest opening weekend and land at the # 2 spot.

Our Prediction:$14M Opening Weekend

# 3 The Lincoln Lawyer

After years of playing it safe in romantic comedies, Matthew McConaughey returns to the genre that helped propel him to movie star status with the film A Time Kill with his new release The Lincoln Lawyer. Better than expected reviews, a strong marketing campaign, and star Ryan Phillpe should help land Lincoln Lawyer at the #2 spot.

Our Prediction: $13M Opening Weekend

#4 Rango

Rango has become the hit childrens film of winter and this weekend should be no different as Rango should continue it’s streak of solid weekend-weekend grosses/holds. Look for The Johnny Depp voiced hit to stay strong and inch it’s way closer a $100m.

Our Prediction; $12 Weekend Box office

#5 Paul

Just two months after The Green Hornet Seth Rogen returns to the big screen in sci-fi comedy Paul. Rogen has certainly had his share of strong opening weekend box office grosses from Knocked Up to Pinnaple Express. However, Paul is not your typical Judd Apatow main stream comedy fair and it’s opening weekend box office will certainly suffer due to this. The films only saving grace is the hardcore following of the films other star ;Simon Pegg. Solid reviews, and a somewhat strong marketing campaign should prevent Paul from becoming a total box office dud. Look for Paul to open in the #5 slot and fall rapidly in the coming weeks.

The Rest Of The Top Ten

#6 The Adjustment Buraeu

Our Prediction: $7M Weekend Box Office

# 7 Red Riding Hood

Our Prediction: $6M Weekend Box Office

# 8 Hall Pass

Our Prediction: 3M Weekend Box Office

#9 Just Go With It

Our Prediction: 3M Weekend Box Office

#10 Beastly

Our Prediction: $2.5M Weekend Box Office

An international one sheet has been released for the upcoming sci-fi thriller Limitless, which stars Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. At first glance it looks as if both actors have been attacked by the airbrush monster, but don’t take our word for it. You be the judge. The film is directed by Neil Burger and based on a novel written by Alan Glynn. Check out the poster below…

Neither one of the men in the poster are bad looking, so why are they airbrushed beyond recognition? Aside from that, there seems to be a heavy emphasis on the “fast life,” which is represented by the busy intersection behind Cooper and De Niro. If you’re not familiar with the film’s premise, you can view the official synopsis below. It explains a lot about the poster and how it represents the story.

Official Synopsis:

Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro star in Limitless, a paranoia-fueled action thriller about an unpublished writer whose life is transformed by a top-secret smart drug that allows him to use 100% of his brain and become a perfect version of himself. His enhanced abilities soon attract shadowy forces that threaten his new life in this darkly comic and provocative film.

Limitless opens in theaters on March 18th.

Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner and TV spots are dropping left and right. Usually we don’t get to see anything until the big game but the movie studios have decided to step things up a notch. Several film ads have already been released this week, and the latest is for Neil Burger’s Limitless. Check it out…

Every movie that centers on corruption, politics, and business should have Kanye West’s “Power” has its background music. Is it just us, or does that song fit every scenario that has to do with greed and excess? Do you remember the wonders it worked for The Social Network? We’re more than a little intrigued to see what else this film has to offer.

Limitless is scheduled hit theaters on March 28.

There’s an evil monkey in someone’s room and it has nothing to do with Chris from “Family Guy.” It belongs to those wild and crazy guys from the Todd Phillips‘ comedy The Hangover Part II. A new insane image has been released in promotion of the film and as usual, we don’t know what the hell’s going on. There’s too much craziness to ignore. Check out the full image…

First and foremost, Stu has a Mike Tyson tattoo on his face. According to the official synopsis, Tyson does appear in the sequel, so we wonder if he’s the one who gives Stu the face art? Next, Alan is bald. That sums it up right there. He’s bald and he looks like a white version of the rapper Rick Ross (if you don’t know who that is Google him). Once again, Phil is partially topless (not that we’re complaining), he’s obviously the eye candy of this group. And last but not least, why is there a monkey wearing a jean jacket hanging out in their room? These questions need answers!

In the follow-up to the record-breaking hit comedy “The Hangover,” Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined.

The Hangover Part II opens in theaters on May 26, 2011.
