It’s bad the battle for least embarassing, as three new releases are going to try (and most likely fail) to take the top spot from The Help, which won last weekend. This week brings Our Idiot Brother, Colombiana, and Don’t Be Afraid of the Darkto wide release, and – as it’s the end of the summer – they are all hoping that low competition and low expectations will help them to make modest profits. Columbiana stars Zoe Saldana and with it, she has the largest role for a female person of color this summer. Check out our predictions…

It’s the dog days of summer. This weekend four movies are coming out and – realistically – only one has a shot at taking the top slot. Last weekend saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes hold well enough to fend off The Help, but this weekend it’s more than likely that The Help will take the top slot. Conan the Barbarian, Fright Night, Spy Kids 4, and One Day are all going wide with only One Day not in 3-D. With Final Destination 5 underperforming, and an audience wary of 3-D (in general), we’ve seen studios beg off 3-D for some of their event films, but with international numbers of Pirates of the Carribean 4 propelling the film to an over billion dollar gross, you can’t count out the third dimension just yet.

Four new movies crowd this end of summer weekend. As TV and radio are bombarded with back to school ads, Final Destination 5, The Help, 30 Minutes or Less, and Glee the 3D Concert Movie hit the big screen. It’s a weekend that becomes a theater palette-cleanser, as the hangers-on’s that have still been playing on a couple of screens finally leave. This is bad news for films like Friends With Benefits, or The Change Up – even Cowboys and Aliens. If the goal was to have less competition from A-list titles, it’s hard to stem the tide of new products, and next week there’s also four wide releases. Check out our predictions…

After last weekend solid debut, Thor will attempt to hold strong at number one while facing competition from what many are describing as the female Hangover with Bridesmaids, the horror thriller Priest, and box office hit Fast Five.

It was a smooth flight for the animated birds of Rio this weekend. The family film stayed atop the box office during its second weekend, beating Tyler Perry‘s Madea’s Big Happy Family and the film adaptation of the New York Times’ best seller Water for Elephants. In just over a week, Rio has been able to gross a hefty $81.2 million, while Water for Elephants (the other Fox picture) grossed $17.5 million and came in at No. 3. Another box office success is Hop — despite its competition, this animated film is still gathering gold. This weekend it went over the $100 million mark.
Take a look at this weekend’s surprising numbers…

With the final results in, this weekend’s top box office winner was the Anthony Hopkins horror/thriller The Rite which came in at #1, while the Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman romantic comedy No String’s Attached held strong at#2 as both films came in right along with our predictions.

Can there even be a winner? Despite this being one of the weekends of summer vacation, it seems like overall this entire weekend was a bomb. Where was everyone? On Netflix? There were five new films released into theaters and yet The Expendables remained the champ with less than $17 million at the box office. Well done Sly, but what’s going on?! People seem to have had enough romantic comedies and even the popular duo of Aniston and Bateman wasn’t enough to draw people in.
Check out this weeks sad numbers below…

Sly Stallone and his gang of bad-asses went head to head with Ms. Roberts and her plethora of food this weekend and America has decided with their dollars! The winner (by a fairly long-shot) is… BLOOD and GUNS over delectables and praying. Good to know what’s in your heart of hearts America! Sadly you still all picked the wrong movie. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World seems to be pulling a Kick-Ass. Two great films, completely under-appreciate. Shame on you!
Check out the numbers from this past weekend at the box office…
