That little blond trouble-maker who can’t help how tall or small she is, but sure as hell knows how to stay on top of the box office top ten! It seems as if audiences all over the world are enjoying Tim Burton’s tumble down the rabbit whole with his latest 3D adventure Alice in Wonderland. The film has reigned over the top ten for two weeks now and by a long shot. So far nothing has come close to touching it, not even Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon teaming up for a Bourne-like film nor Robert Pattinson in a romantic drama ( apparently all you ladies out there only want him if he’s painted white and with fangs!). Check out this weekends numbers below…

Yet again, despite everyone’s gripes about Shutter Island not being “Scorsese enough” for them, it managed to lead the box office pack by over $4 million. The only two newbies on the list this week, Cop Out and The Crazies, both odd medium sized films, managed to rake in about half of what they cost to make. Although Bruce Willis didn’t manage to come in at #1 he did prove to us yet again that he could get a mindless comedy about very little to make nearly $20 million. Not bad my friend…

No surprises here, Scorsese and DiCaprio pair up and people will pay to see it. They’d pay $12 to see the two eat dinner. Although Shutter Island was not as “Scorsese” as some people may have expected, it didn’t disappoint and showed that the director still has some new tricks up his sleeve. Sadly, The Ghost Writer, which was almost the same movie, just with Polanksi and Ewan McGregor (another great duo) was only released into four theaters and therefore only made about $200k. Hopefully it will become more available in the coming weeks. Aside from that, Wolfman seems to be flying down the charts faster than an Olympic snowboarder flying down a mountain. Poor Wolfy…

It’s official, people are so obsessed with “Valentine’s Day” that they’ll buy cheap chocolate for a loved one that’s marked up %600 and they’ll go and see ANY movie with the title just because… IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY!!! It’s great that people want a day to celebrate their love, all I ask is that you eat some quality candy and watch a good movie! There are plenty of heart wrenchingly amazing romantic films out there, go for a classic! And if you like the 10 stories at once style, you really can’t get better than Love Actually – it may have a Christmas theme, but it’s really the best of its genre.
Not surprisingly, all the last minute hype for The Wolfman couldn’t save it from itself. Not only did Valentine’s Day nearly double what it brought in, but Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief the film with a tenth of the advertising campaign beat it out on the list. Poor Wolfy, maybe they’ll like him better overseas…

Well this is just getting boring now. Avatar has reigned #1 at the box office for four weeks now, can anyone stop it? Probably not with small budget vampire films like Daybreakers and indie comedies like Youth in Revolt hitting theaters. While everyone else seems to be releasing their small indies with little to no money for distribution, James Cameron’s pockets keep growing fatter. Maybe Denzel Washington and Book of Eli is enough to break its reign? We’ll have to wait and see what happens next week…

As if it’s any surprise, James Cameron’s new, massively talked about 3-D masterpiece Avatar racked in the big bucks over the Holiday weekend. With tickets costing about $2-$3 more for 3-D and IMAX theaters it was able to beat out Guy Ritchie’s opening weekend for his Robert Downey Jr action-blockbuster Sherlock Holmes. Really the two films are about equal and would make a great action packed double feature if you don’t mind swapping theaters and sitting on your ass for an extreme amount of time.
The sad news, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel trailed right behind them. I know that you have to keep the kiddies entertained but it’s insane that they can still drip than amount of money from the Chipmunks. Whatever happened to the recession and cutting back?

Everyone at 20th Century Fox were shaking in their boots last weekend, when James Cameron’s Avatar finally hit theaters. After a long and tumultuous wait, the 3-D epic was released to the general public and debuted at number 1. The film grossed 73 million dollars domestically and another 159 million overseas bringing its grand total to 232 million worldwide. The sci-fi feature bumped Disney’s The Princess and the Frog down a peg to number 2, which brought in another 12 million dollars.
Somehow, someway Sandra Bullock’s latest film, The Blind Side continues to stay in the top three. It snagged the third spot this week, with a little over 10 million dollars in ticket sales, bringing its domestic gross to 164 million dollars. The budget for the film was only 29 million, so you know Warner Bros is rolling in dough.

It’s no surprise that The Princess and the Frog kicked ass at the box office. It’s a new Disney film with old school animation, which means that it reminds adults of their childhood and gave the new generation something to smile about without CGI or 3-D glasses.Twilight is still hanging on, but not my much. As the holidays role in, all the Oscar and Holiday films will soon take over our top ten (I can’t wait!).
Aside from that, there were no records broken this weekend at the box office. It feels like quiet before the storm, which reminds me…. we have Avatar hitting theaters next week.I wonder how big of a splash it will make.

So glad to see New Moon finally be dethroned from its number one spot, even if it is by Sandra Bullock’s Oscar attempt. At least the The Blind Side has heart and a message instead of… well what exactly did New Moon have aside from some cool special effects and a couple of interesting moments with Michael Sheen?
