Boardwalk Empire Reviews, Interviews & More
This week it feels like you can recreate the pleasure and pain of going to the movies in early May at a giant megaplex. Many of this week’s releases came out in April or (in one case) May. But if it’s not movies that interest you, there’s also a ton of television hitting. Let’s see, shall we?
It used to be that winning an Emmy was considered sub-Oscar, but now that television is getting to be on similar artistic footing as cinema, it's surprising that winning one still isn't that great an accomplishment. Perhaps it's because of the stodgy and repetitive picks of their academy. Here's the full list of their 2012 nominations :
The Oscars may have been announced last week, but there are still a few more award shows before we get to Hollywood’s Big Night—case in point, last night’s 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, held at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and honoring the best acting in television and film over the past year. Check out the list of winners after the jump.
"Boardwalk Empire" closes its second season with a shocker that we honestly didn't see coming. While the episode makes too obvious an effort to tie up certain loose ends, the power of the moments that did work makes up for any of the minor problems that made their way into the final episode of season two. Sex, betrayal, murder. They are often the keys to any great gangster epic, and with a heaping dose of all of them mixed into this week's episode of "Boardwalk Empire," you can be sure that we were hooked. Thankfully, unlike a soap opera, which loses its appeal once we turn off the television and realize how ridiculous the story was, "Boardwalk Empire" only lets us admire it...
With its second season almost wrapped up, "Boardwalk Empire" is kicking it up a notch, delivering not only the solid performances and filmmaking that we've come to expect, but also a hefty dose of character-based drama and shocking twists which made last night's episode one to talk about. It reminded us that all gangster epics are tragedies, in which the ones we love often pay...
"Boardwalk Empire" is television on a broad scale. Although the majority of the action takes place in Atlantic City, the true setting of the show isn't a place, but a time in history. We're fortunate that show's writers are willing to venture outside of their comfort zone to capture that moment. This week's episode takes us across the Atlantic to Ireland, and by doing so,...
Last week, "Boardwalk Empire" left us with a serious cliffhanger wondering what would happen next. Sunday, the drama returned with a strong episode that showcased the nuanced writing and expert performances of everyone involved. In a show that sometimes struggles to keep all the characters and subplots in play, it was an impressively balanced episode.

We always knew that "Boardwalk Empire" would offer up its fair share of drama. What we didn't know was just how much inner conflict and emotional betrayal would go into this show. It's obviously aiming for a Godfather scale of emotional impact, with brothers against brothers and old comrades turning away from each other; it doesn't quite hit the mark,...
"Boardwalk Empire" may not be HBO's greatest foray into the gangster genre, but it succeeds by filling a niche that no other show does. It's a period piece featuring remarkable talent across the board, with the best writers, directors and actors in the business contributing their best work. When it pays off, it does so magnificently. "Boardwalk Empire" never did completely live up to its potential, but at the same time, it's better than a lot of other shows we could be watching. True, it isn't nearly as strong as the criminally overlooked "Treme," but as always, the good shows get the attention, while the great ones get discovered after the fact.
Thankfully, every now and then, even the...
"Boardwalk Empire" has been having a reasonably strong second season so far, and last night's episode is further indication that while things might not be as exciting as we'd like them to be just yet, they will be soon. Overlooked characters got a chance to be heard and familiar characters got a chance to remind us why we find them interesting. Read our review to see how we...
"Boardwalk Empire" hasn't wasted anytime getting into the drama this season. The first episode featured Nucky's arrest, something that the audience should have expected but may have been surprised by. Chalky is also getting the screentime that he deserves, and the cast continues to deliver the kind of performances you'd expect from an ensemble like this. Could we possibly...
HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" will continue to take on the world of booze, gambling, and crime with their highly anticipated second season this year. The award winning series will feature a fresh new face in a well known role according to TVLine. Michael Zegen has been cast as the infamous Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel on the show.
On Monday the Directors Guild of America announced their nominees for the best helmers in film. Today, they've unveiled their finalists in the television category and just like in movies, there's some stiff competition. How do you choose between "The Walking Dead" and "Boardwalk Empire?" How about "Modern Family" and "Glee?"...
Last night brought the season finale of "Boardwalk Empire." It just happened to be the best episode so far. Secrets were revealed, alliances were broken, and of course, people were killed. A lot of loose threads were addressed but we were left with enough questions to make next season a must-see.

"Boardwalk Empire" is just about ready to wrap up a successful first season and several of its characters are at a crossroads. Margaret needs to consider the principles she's sacrificed, Nucky needs to admit to himself that he's a true gangster, Van Alden needs to come to terms with his desires and even Al Capone needs to grow up a little. Last night's episode wasn't the most...
The first season of "Boardwalk Empire" is coming close to an end and thus far, the HBO Prohibition-era show has proven to be a success. People are realizing that a series dealing with so much drama takes time to develop and they are sticking with it, despite the slow pace. But last night’s episode took a step on the wild side and featured bloodshed, lots of bloodshed. Check out...
The original advertisements for "Boardwalk Empire" made it look like Michael Pitt and Steve Buscemi would be on screen together very often, but with Jimmy in Chicago and Nucky in Atlantic City, that hasn't been the case. However, last night's episode suggested that there still might be room for these two talented actors to play off one another. Take a look at our review and...
"Boardwalk Empire" got off to a slow start, but this show has been picking up the pace very quickly over the past few weeks, and last night's episode was just another reason to keep watching. A mix of impressive work both in front of and behind the camera added up to a very satisfying episode.
