La Mission is the latest production from the Bratt brothers. The brains behind the operation was Peter Bratt who wrote and directed La Mission, and Benjamin Bratt stars in this epic tale about a macho-man who comes into play with his son sexual orientation. Benjamin Bratt is known for his roles in Traffic and Miss Congeniality (as Sandra Bullock‘s sidekick and love interest), but La Mission might just be Benjamin Bratt’s keystone role.

Sundance 2009 Award Winners

The 2009 Sundance Film Festival closed Saturday night with an awards show hosted by Spring Breakdown‘s Jane Lynch. Joseph Gordon-Levitt from 500 Days of Summer announced the U.S. Audience Award while la MISSION‘s Benjamin Bratt announced the World Cinema Audience Awards.

Director Geoffrey Gilmore closed the festival with the following words, ”This has been a truly remarkable year for Sundance in ways even we did not fully predict. We opened the Festival with animation and closed with science fiction, and in between showcased some of the best films we’ve ever seen. People ask us how independent film has evolved over the past 25 years and the answer is, quite simply, it’s better.”

Director Steven Soderbergh will release his two part film, Che, starring Benicio del Toro, Benjamin Bratt, and Franka Potente in January and February of next year. The films are about the overthrowing of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in Cuba. The story follows Guevara (del Toro), a man who fomented revolutions in Africa and South America after the fall of Batista and was eventually captured and killed by counter-insurgency rangers in the mountains of Bolivia, backed by the CIA.

The film has been a part of the London, New York, AFI, and Toronto film festivals, and won a Best Actor award for Bencio del Toro and was nominated for A Golden Palm in Cannes.
