Cars 2 may be Pixar’s first critical failure, but after a huge opening weekend, the sequel proved to be another financial success for the beloved studio. Five years ago, Cars ranked No. 1 with $60.1 million. This weekend, Cars 2 surpassed its predecessor with $68 million. A film that took us by surprise was the new Cameron Diaz‘s comedy Bad Teacher, which made a hefty debut of $31 million. Sadly, the huge superhero/comic movie Green Lantern dropped to No. 3 with a weak weekend gross of $18.3 million. Check out the numbers.

After last weekends disappointing debut, Green Lantern looks to fend off new comers Bad Teacher and The Disney Sequel in Cars 2. From Toy Story to Up Pixar is known for having the golden touch when it comes to producing movies that produce box office gold. While Cars was a solid performer it was a tad bit below in box office tallies when compared previous Pixar films. The lack of a solid family films over the past few weeks and an onslaught of marketing should help propel Cars 2 to the finish in the # 1 spot.

Black comedies are tricky, because you are usually following a main character who is a terrible human being. But when they work they become classics – like the more recent Bad Santa. That film seems a direct inspiration for Bad Teacher, which stars Cameron Diaz as a teacher who’s happy to show her students movies every class until she learns she can get money for having them do well on a test. Though not as scathing as Bad Santa, Teacher is an amusing lark, with solid performances by the cast who keep the film moving. Find out more below…

Jake Kasdan may have come from famous lineage (his father is writer/director Lawrence), but he quickly established his voice in early efforts like Zero Effect. He also started his directorial career around the same time Freaks and Geeks was hitting TV and directed that show’s pilot, which made him part of the Judd Apatow comedy family. Bad Teacher isn’t an Apatow production, but it did reunite him with Jason Segel. Bad Teacher is a solid black comedy, and Kasdan knows his way around the camera. Check out our interview.

Last month we posted the first trailer for Cameron Diaz’s upcoming comedy Bad Teacher. It was a red band version and as you might suspect it featured some explicit content. Every curse word under the sun was used, and a scantily clad Diaz was shown washing a car in nothing more than a crop top and daisy dukes. We’re sure that will get guys into the theaters. It debuted over on MySpace and it’s a red band version, which means some of the film’s raunchier material appears in the video.
