Love him or hate him, director James Cameron has never been one to play it safe. But Cameron just announced that he is not open to developing any projects, original or otherwise, in the near future. Instead he will focus entirely on directing sequels to his groundbreaking 3D epic Avatar. This is cause for concern. In the past, some directors opted to coast off huge successes and ended up irrevocably damaging their reputations. The most notable of these being George Lucas with his Star Wars franchise. Will James Cameron follow in his path?

In analyzing the careers of George Lucas and James Cameron, there are similarities, and it was Star Wars was the film that inspired Cameron to quit his truck driving job and go to work at Roger Corman Studios. Both are notorious gear-heads. The two men also hit tremendous creative highs after difficult first films with American Graffiti and The Terminator.

George Lucas’ second feature, American Graffiti, was and remains the director’s most personal endeavor, touching on many elements from his teenage years, including small town living, troubled relationships, and cruising. To tell his story, Lucas employed the use of several daring and innovative devices like crossing-cutting narratives, title cards, and a musical score comprised entirely of period rock songs. American Graffiti helped revive interest in the 50s era. After that, Lucas was viewed as being one of Hollywood’s brightest talents, a young artist of seemingly unlimited potential.

Like Lucas, James Cameron experienced overnight success with his second directorial effort. From its inception, everything about The Terminator screamed ‘B-movie trash’. After selling his original screenplay for $1 dollar and an agreement to direct, Cameron was able to muster a paltry $6.5.million budget and cast relative unknown Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead. Against all expectations, Cameron came out on top. The Terminator was a taut, tense, and supremely intelligent thriller that was miles beyond most of the mindless action fare released in the mid 80s.

It was what George Lucas and James Cameron did after hitting it big where their careers diverged. For Lucas, America Graffiti was a revelation. Unfortunately, the film was swallowed up by the phenomenon of Star Wars. Many felt that Lucas reached new artistic peaks with Star Wars‘ elaborate costumes, creatures, and production design, but all those were cosmetic. In terms of storytelling, Star Wars was really a classic coming-of-age tale played against the backdrop of war. While the narrative was certainly well-structured, it lacked the originality and emotional resonance of Lucas’ earlier efforts. After Star Wars, Lucas was either unwilling or unable to recapture that ambition and creativity which led him to create American Graffiti. Instead, he milked the Star Wars brand for all it was worth, releasing an endless stream of toys, games, books, television series, inferior prequels, and a horrid holiday special. Today, the franchise has become something of a running gag even among the most loyal fans.

James Cameron took the high road after The Terminator, directing a series of epic, yet diverse, blockbusters that always managed to push the envelope in terms of visual storytelling. After a 12 year break from film-making, he returned in 2009 with Avatar, a film which was very much in the same vein as Star Wars, and there’s where they begin to interest again. Both were overly hyped sci-fi epics with young stars, groundbreaking visuals, and shopworn plots. In addition to becoming the highest-grossing films of their time, they were also wrongly praised as being their respective directors’ finest achievement.

Right out of the gate, James Cameron expressed a desire to helm an Avatar sequel. Evidently that desire has morphed into something else with Cameron’s proclamation that he will just be in the “Avatar business” from now on and is developing three more installments. But isn’t this creative wheel-spinning? Unfortunately, this may very well lead to his downfall based on George Lucas’ history with Star Wars. Currently James Cameron deserves some benefit of the doubt based on his body of work. However, the day he announces plans for an Avatar holiday special, I’m heading for the hills.

Do you think James Cameron will become the next George Lucas?

Fans of James Cameron’s earlier work (the first two Terminator films, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies) have been waiting patiently for 15 years for the mercurial director to return to non-Avatar filmmaking, as not all of us have been fans of his Dances with Ferngully the Last Rainforest CGI extravaganza. Well, Cameron fans, you’re in for something of a wait (like, forever): Cameron has announced he’ll only be making Avatar sequels in the future, and is already planning on moving beyond the already-announced Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 to film Avatar 4.

Fans hoping to finally see the long-gestating Battle Angel, or Cameron’s film about the atomic bombing of Japan at the close of World War II are sure to be disappointed, as are those who were never wowed by Cameron’s original Avatar film. Cameron, however, is pushing forward, and recently announced that due to splitting his time between documentary filmmaking, record-breaking scientific exploration, and the world (and technology) building of the Avatar films, he will no longer be making non-Avatar films:

I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the “Avatar” business. Period. That’s it. I’m making “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” maybe “Avatar 4,” and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts. And that all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the “Avatar” landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way. And anything I can’t say in that area, I want to say through documentaries, which I’m continuing. I’ve done five documentaries in the last 10 years, and I’ll hopefully do a lot more.

It’s a game plan that makes sense, considering how long it takes to make a single Avatar film, along with the time consuming nature of Cameron’s extracurricular interests. The guy is 57 years old, and only has so much time left. That said, it’s unfortunate for fans of Cameron who simply don’t want to spend the next 20 years revisiting the world of Avatar over and over again. But at this point, Cameron has donated so much time, effort and money into creating the technology that allowed Avatar to happen, and appears to simply be wanting to protect his investment at this point.

We’ve spent the last year and a half on software development and pipeline development. The virtual production methodology was extremely prototypical on the first film. As then, no one had ever done it before and we didn’t even know for two and half years into it and $100 million into it if it was going to work. So we just wanted to make our lives a whole lot easier so that we can spend a little more of our brainpower on creativity. It was a very, very uphill battle on the first film. So we’ve been mostly working on the tool set, the production pipeline, setting up the new stages in Los Angeles, setting up the new visual effects pipeline in New Zealand, that sort of thing. And, by the way, writing. We haven’t gotten to the design stage yet. That’ll be the next.

So prepare yourself for about two decades worth of Avatar films in the future. Yay?

What do you think of Cameron’s decision?

Bad news for fans of Dances With Wolves in Ferngully the Last Rainforest Avatar—Fox had previously announced that the sequel, Avatar 2, would have a 2014 release date, with Avatar 3 to quickly follow in 2015. However, as /Film points out, Avatar 2 has no green light or official cast, and with James Cameron busying himself with Titanic 3D and making record-busting deep sea dives, the sequel seems to be pushed ever further in the future—so much so that producer Jon Landau has hinted that the earliest we’d see anything from Avatar 2 may not be until 2016.

At a Titanic 3D screening that took place earlier this year, Landau, James Cameron’s long-running producer, stated that Avatar 2 is “likely four years away.”

In a more recent interview, Landau clarified, stating that “movies make release dates; release dates don’t make movies. We want to get it right,” which is something of a relief, as so many films in Hollywood are dictated by a pre-set release date. Landau also stated that the film’s special effects teams are “working on environments, they are working on…some of the movie is going to be underwater, how do we do performance capture underwater.” That said, the fact that Landau has stated that Avatar 2 is at least four years off means that you folks suffering from Pandora-withdrawal are going to have to keep up the cosplay for just a little longer.

What do you think of the Avatar 2 news?

Perhaps the blue paint has kept it from being a hot-button Halloween costume (that and the nudity), but it’s two years later, and it’s unknown when it will it be sequelized, and there doesn’t seem to be much passion in the air for the film. Perhaps Disneyworld will stoke those fires, as they’ve announced they will start construction on Avatar-themed areas in 2013.

Avatar was once the “what the heck is this? Blue Cats?” film, and Cameron’s worrisome follow up to his mammoth hit Titanic (thought untoppable). Six months after release it had made $750 Million in America, and over two billion internationally. But though the film advanced motion capture and 3-D technology, it’s simplistic story hasn’t generated the hard core “I wish I was Jake Skully or Neteri” passions that once kept Star Wars so hot.

But perhaps comparing the film to Star Wars at this late juncture is moot. With theatrical windows shorter than ever, Avatar managed to be a picture that had to be seen on the big screen, and a month after release it was the sort of film that the zeitgeist required anyone who liked films in any sort of meaningful way to hit theaters to check out. Cultural resonance in the age of niche cultures is that much harder to measure. Disneyworld believes that it’s worth doing things Avatar-themed five years after release, so either the sequels will be coming in conjunction with the theme areas, or Avatar is just one of those films.

Would you go to Disneyworld to visit Pandora?

Are you anxiously awaiting news about the next installments in James Cameron’s Avatar trilogy? Well, you’re in luck because the Oscar winning director recently opened about about his plans for the projects. It’s no secret that the movies will take a lot of time and effort to complete, therefore Cameron plans on shooting them not back to back — but simultaneously.

According to Cameron:

“I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan.”

He went on to say that we can expect to see plenty of familiar faces in the sequel. “Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.” That sounds great to us, but the real question is who will survive to Avatar 3? Dun! Dun! Dun! As you might suspect, he wouldn’t release that info.

Being that the first Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time, the next two have a good chance of becoming huge successes. Therefore, the director and the studio will put some of their future grosses to good use.

“One thing’s for sure: some percentage of the presumably-massive Avatar sequel gross will go to charity. Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world. I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place.”

We knew Cameron would find a way to support the environment. You have to give him props for practicing what he preaches.

What do you think of Avatar 2 and 3 being shot together? Who do you think will make it to the end of the trilogy?

Earlier this week, James Cameron appeared at a special 3D event promoting his latest film Sanctum. He serves as producer along with Andrew Wight, while Alister Grierson takes on directing duties. The movie is based on actual events and takes viewers into a world of cave diving and illustrates its many dangers. All three men were in attendance at Universal City Walk, where they spoke about the use of 3D in this smaller film in comparison to Cameron’s epic Avatar. Surprisingly, they all felt that Sanctum does a much better job of submerging an audience in the 3D world.

Check out some video of Cameron at the event as he explains his reasoning below…

Overall, he’s saying that the experience of watching the 3D in Sanctum will be a lot more visible because it’s not done on such a huge scale and there’s not as much CGI. He said it best himself, “The difference between experiencing Sanctum in 2D and 3D is actually much greater because the 3D will constantly be informing you, in the experience of watching the movie, with the sense of claustrophobia. 3D works best in small spaces. ” Intimacy is the key here.

Sanctum is scheduled to hit theaters on February 4. If you haven’t already seen it, check out the trailer.

What do you think of Cameron’s take on Sanctum vs Avatar’s 3D? Does he have a point?

Out of all the year-end movie lists to come out this week, this is by far the most controversial. Over at TorrentFreak, they’ve named the Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of 2010 and we have to say the number one pick was slightly surprising. Avatar topped the list while the number two spot was taken by a comic book film that really could have used the extra bump at the box office. Check out the complete list below…

Here are the titles, download amounts, and worldwide grosses:

1. Avatar 16,580,00o $2,779,551,867

2. Kick-Ass 11,400,000 $96,130,432

3. Inception 9,720,000 $825,408,570

4. Shutter Island 9,490,000 $294,803,014

5. Iron Man 2 8,810,000 $621,751,988

6. Clash of the Titans 8,040,000 $493,214,993

7. Green Zone 7,730,000 $94,875,650

8. Sherlock Holmes 7,160,000 $523,029,864

9. The Hurt Locker 6,850,000 $48,612,915

10. Salt 6,700,000 $175,190,850

Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time, so the pirating didn’t affect it one bit, but why would you want to download the movie? Avatar is one of those films that really is an experience and needs to be seen in 3D on a big screen. We’re hoping those people who downloaded it at least saw it in theaters first before watching it on their computers.

Kick-Ass really suffered from the pirating. The movie was great but it wasn’t a huge box office success not even cracking the $100 million mark worldwide. We’re also really surprised that Green Zone made the list. Who knew so many people wanted to see Matt Damon play Jason Bourne in the MiddleEast?

What do you think of the top 10 list? Are you surprised?

The holiday season is upon us, and apparently Santa Claus doesn’t know the meaning of the word “recession.” There are no lay-offs at the North Pole (unless you’ve just watched “Family Guy’s” Road to the North Pole episode)! With that in mind, we’re sure you’ve got some films fans on your shopping list, so we’ll lend a hand with our list of the best DVD and Blu-Ray discs that were released this year.

Whether they’re jam-packed with some of our favorite films of the year and some simple must-have films to satisfy the film fan on your list…

7. Toy Story 3

Admit it, you teared up a little bit when you saw this one. If you can handle weeping like a child in front of family and friends again, it’s a good idea to pick this one up. Your best bet is to grab the Blu-Ray-/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. The price is steeper, but it’s perfect if Santa/Best Buy delivers that HDTV you were hoping for.

Noteworthy Features: Day and Night theatrical short with commentary, a look at the toys featured in the film, “The Science of Adventure” NASA featurette, and many more!

Get it on Amazon.com for $22.99!

6. Avatar Three-Disc Edition

We all knew the bare-bones edition of this movie that was released a few months back would soon be replaced by a more expensive, feature-filled collector’s version (and we all knew we’d curse ourselves for buying the first one). Luckily, this is the kind of movie that can justify that type of treatment. For any fan of movies in general, it’s great to see how one of the most impressive cinematic achievements in recent history was brought to the screen. We suggest purchasing the Blu-Ray version if you have the equipment for it; no other format captures the glory of Pandora as well.

Noteworthy Features: Three versions of the film (Theatrical, Special Edition Re-Release, and Collector’s Extended Cut), deleted scenes, Capturing Avatar documentary, screen tests, deconstructing a scene feature and many more!

Get it on Amazon.com for $23.99!

5. Alien Anthology Blu-Ray

For a fan of the Alien franchise, this set is a must have. Collecting all the films together for the first time on Blu-Ray and boasting plenty of special features, this one will provide hours of entertainment. Or, you know, at least the first two films will. Can’t promise you’ll enjoy parts three and four…

Noteworthy Features: Extensive making-of documentaries for each film, productions material, scripts, commentary…everything you could want!

4. True Grit

To coincide with the release of the upcoming Coen Brothers remake, we get a Blu-Ray edition of this classic Western. Although we suspect that Joel and Ethan will deliver a remarkable movie, this purchase is great for the disgruntled film enthusiast who is sure nothing can compare to the original. By “disgruntled film enthusiast,” we mean your grandpa.

Noteworth Features: None, save for the film (unless you consider subtitles noteworthy), but for most fans of this type of movie, that will be just fine.

Get it on Amazon.com for $17.99!

It wasn’t in theaters too long ago but it looks like Ben Affleck’s sophomore directorial effort is being rushed to DVD and Blu-Ray for the holiday season. While it may not exactly be this generation’s GoodFellas, it does feature some of the best heist scenes since Heat. It’s just what you need to forget about Gigli. Pick up this combo pack that features DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Copy versions of the film.

Noteworthy Features: Commentary by actor/director Ben Affleck on extended and theatrical cuts of the film, “Ben’s Boston” featurette, “Pulling Off the Perfect Heist” featurette, and more.

Get in on Amazon.com for $22.99!

2. Inception Blu-Ray

Inception wasn’t just one of the best films of the year, it was one of the most impressive science-fiction films of all time. Featuring heart-stopping action and genuine emotion, this is what going to the movies is all about (a good-looking cast didn’t hurt, either.) Your home theater probably can’t recreate the real theater experience, but this Blu-Ray copy comes as close as possible. With special features that take you inside the world of dreams and show you how the imagination of director Christopher Nolan was translated to screen, this is a must-have for film buffs.

Noteworthy Features: Dreams: Cinema of the Subconscious documentary, extraction mode which takes you inside the movie

Get it on Amazon for $17.99!

1. The Complete Metropolis

The name of this disc is something of a misnomer, seeing as most film historians agree that there will never be a “complete” version of this film. Too much of it has been lost but this DVD release is the best one fans have seen so far. Not only is it the fullest version of the film available but it also features remarkable picture quality for a film of this age. It’s the perfect gift for the die-hard film fan on your list.

Noteworthy Features: This is pretty bare-bones, but it wasn’t like we could resurrect Fritz Lang for an audio commentary track.

Buy it on Amazon.com for $21.49!

Here’s the bad news: There is absolutely no TV on DVD being released this week. None whatsoever. Well, at least none of note (something tells me Season 5 of Perry Mason doesn’t really resonate with the Internet crowd) so there will be no section on the small screen for maybe the first time in the history of this column.

The good news: There is a TON of new feature films being released this week. Everything you could want from indie critical darling of The Kids Are All Right to the disappointing “3-D” blockbuster attempt of The Last Airbender and all points in between.

So we’re blowing up the format this week with a blurb about the eight feature films being released this week. And, don’t worry, we didn’t forget about informing you of that one little nugget of DVD badness either.

Check it out below…

A Christmas Carol

I want my Robert Zemeckis back! I want the return of the filmmaker who gave us Contact, Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and the Back to the Future films. Heck, I’ll even take the guy who gave us Cast Away. Anything but this graphic-over-live action nonsense that makes cold movies devoid of a connection.

And it’s so incredibly frustrating that he was seduced by this. Zemeckis was able to churn out film after film that captured the imagination in the way that his CGI stuff tries to do but can’t. It’s like he created that world with real people to extent he had to show what was inside his mind and didn’t realize it was there all along.

So please, Roger. Tell me that your Yellow Submarine remake is just a Wikipedia lie and you’ll return to your brilliant filmmaking within the year.

Click Here to Buy A Christmas Carol on DVD

I feel a personal betrayal with this film because I’ve always been an M. Night Shyamalan apologist. More than that – probably his most rampant supporter.

In fact, if you’ve had the misfortune of being within earshot of me over the last decade you’ve probably heard this escape my lips:

“He’s the next Alfred Hitchcock!”

“He’s the best storyteller, he just doesn’t tell the best stories.”

“I’m serious. He’s the best director alive. If he stops writing movies for himself the quality of his films would prove that.”

Then The Last Airbender happened, and, well, I’ve kind of stopped apologizing for Mr. Shyamalan now.

Click Here to Buy The Last Airbender on DVD

For the first time in maybe the history of film, the Best Actress Oscar race is absolutely loaded. Normally, it’s the easiest category to predict as we struggle to scrape up five good roles for women. Let alone performances.

This year, it won’t be the case and that happy glut is encapsulated in this film: It has two likely nominees. Two! How exciting that we’re finally getting so many good roles that we may actually see vote splitting happen in this category and super-buzzed-about performances like Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong and Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs may find themselves without room.

Yes the Kids, and the roles for women, finally appear to be all right.

I was at a Dodger’s game this summer and they have a deal with Warner Brothers where they put a trailer up on the jumbotron in-between one of the innings.

Sitting in front of us was a father of three who was kind enough to bring his three young children for a day at the ballpark. He seemed to be enjoying himself until, before the fifth inning, this trailer came on the Jumbotron.

His children shouted in delight, “Cats and Dogs! Cats and Dogs!” He had a look failure and resignation. Failure in that it seemed he’d been trying to hide the fact that this movie existed and resignation that he’d soon have to waste about 50 bucks and two hours watching talking felines and canines.

Marketing at its finest.

Most hip hop stars begin to slowly transition away from their stage names and toward their real names. Which is why you get billings like Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Alvin “Xzibit” Joiner.

Li’l Bow Wow, however, just became Bow Wow. Gotta Respect that.

Here’s my problem with a certain type of people. I don’t know exactly how to described them, but I’m sure after this paragraph a light will go off in your head.

This is a person who has never seen an episode of “Breaking Bad”, denounces television for all its evils, yet never misses an episode of “The Real Housewives of Wherever” because it’s just such a train-wreck. This is the person who is an insufferable music snob yet blasts the most disgustingly rudimentary hip-hop whenever you get in the car. And as it relates to this, this is the person who insists on having a DVD collection filled with films like Bubble Boy and Troll 2 because somehow, in their mind, it makes them more of a connoisseur to enjoy crap rather than seek quality.

And that’s my issue – it’s not a badge of honor to avoid most of one medium and just watch the crappy portion. It’s stupid and it’s ignorant and documentaries like this only contribute to that philosophy that allows the selectively crappy consumer to feel entitled.

All right, I’ve run out of blurb steam. All I know is that I see just about everything with Kevin Kline (I still consider his work in A Fish Called Wanda as the finest film performance of all time) and when I saw this on the list of releases this week I had to think long and hard as to whether or not it was a straight-to-DVD release.

The sad thing? In 1993 that cast would’ve meant an April release date and a $15 million first weekend.

The Avatar sequel talk will never die down, so for those of you who have been patiently waiting on some concrete info we’ve got it! According to Variety, director James Cameron plans on delving into the world of Pandora for a second and third time. He along with 20th Century Fox have plans to release two more sequels and we’ve got the release dates to prove it!

The trade reports that Fox is eying a release date for Avatar 2 in December of 2014 and Avatar 3 for December 2015. We don’t even want to imagine the amount of prep work that will have to go into this production with the release dates so close together. Cameron will begin working on the scripts for the film early next year. He wants to start production in late 2011 but he’s not sure if he wants to shoot back to back or wait until he completes the scripts.

“In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of ‘Avatar’s’ visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world,” Cameron said. “I’m looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.”

Once again, Cameron will produce the film with Jon Landau and Lightstorm Productions.

At the moment, Avatar is the highest grossing worldwide film and the top-selling blu-ray disc of all time!

Do you think Cameron should shoot the films back to back? Can you wait another 3 years until you get more Avatar?
