Avatar Day Website Crashes

Avatar fans seriously wanted those free tickets for the upcoming preview screening. This Friday is Avatar Day, and conventional and IMAX theaters all over the world will be showing 15 minutes of footage from the film. Today tickets went on sale at the film’s official website AvatarMovie.com, and people attacked that thing for all it was worth. The system actually crashed! More on the site and it’s recovery below.

According to Yahoo News, due to the overwhelming response from visitors, instead of getting free tickets they got an error message. Twentieth Century Fox’s original response stated, “the site was being repaired. The studio will unveil the film’s trailer in theaters and online Friday, and fans who score tickets for special showings at 3D theaters across the globe will see extended previews.” That was the situation a couple of hours ago, but now according to /Film the reservation page is back online.

For those of you who tried to get on earlier but couldn’t, give it another shot. You should be able to enter and reserve with no problems at this point. The tickets will be for screenings held on “Friday, August 21 (at 6 and 6:30 p.m.), the Avatar preview will include an introduction from Cameron and some new footage not shown during July’s Comic-Con International convention in San Diego.” I’m just as cheap as the next person, but it seems like you guys went hard today. Kudos!

Avatar Day Showtimes and Tickets

August 21st, better known as Avatar Day is just around the corner and we’ve got some important info to share. We know when and where you can get your movie passes. According to the LATimes, early next week free tickets will go on sale to see 15 minutes of early footage from James Cameron‘s Avatar. That’s right, I said free!

On Monday, August 17th at Noon PST, you can get your tickets for the many Avatar screenings that will take place that day. They’re on a first come, first serve basis so get’em while their hot. You’ll be able to get them via the film’s official website, AvatarMovie.com. The tickets will be for screenings held on “Friday, Aug. 21 (at 6 and 6:30 p.m.), the Avatar preview will include an introduction from Cameron and some new footage not shown during July’s Comic-Con International convention in San Diego.”

This promotion is unprecedented for Fox, so I’m sure they have a lot riding on it. Talk about putting it all out on faith. I believe the official trailer for the film should be dropping that day as well. I can’t wait to see how their going to package that for the general public. So much anticipation, so little time!

James Cameron Talks Avatar’s Originality

With Avatar Day (August 21) fast approaching, the news on James Cameron and his highly anticipated film will continue to roll in. Over at Screenrant, they’ve got some quotes from the director regarding his epic project’s story. So much emphasis has been put on the stunning visuals in the film, that the script has gone completely unnoticed. For the first time, in a long time we’ll have a big budget film that’s derived from 100% original material.

Cameron recently spoke about the film’s story and how its a stand alone piece of work.

“It’s simultaneously one of the great strengths and one of the potential weaknesses. We have no brand value. We have to create that brand value. “Avatar” means something to that group of fans that know this film is coming, but to the other the public it’s a nonsense word and we have to hope we can educate them. Well, I shouldn’t say a nonsense word – it doesn’t mean anything specific in terms of a brand association. And in fact there may be even a slight negative one because more people know about the Saturday morning cartoon, the anime, than about this particular film. We’ve got to create that [brand] from scratch.

On the other hand, ultimately, it is probably the film’s greatest strength in the long run. We’ve had these big, money-making franchise films for a long time, “Star Trek” and “Star Wars,” you know, “Harry Potter,” and there’s a certain sort of comfort factor in that; you know what you’re going to get. But there’s no kind of shock of the new that’s possible with that. It’s been a while since something that took us on a journey, something that grabbed us by the lapels and dragged us out the door and took us on a journey of surprise.”

It’s so true. Everything that’s had major box office success already has a familiarity factor to them. With Avatar the only thing I’m familiar with is James Cameron. He’s pretty much placing the quality of this film on his shoulders. It’s been over 14 years in the making, and his first narrative feature after the Oscar winning, record breaking (and still holding) Titanic. On top of all that pressure for the movie, he adds a script with characters and concepts that no one has ever heard of.

I have to respect Cameron’s faith in himself. After August 21st, he should get his first taste of what the film’s December release will feel like.

James Cameron’s Avatar Day Details

Last weekend at Comic-Con ’09, director James Cameron broke some top secret news about his upcoming film, Avatar. He announced that August 21st has been officially declared, Avatar Day. What does that mean exactly? Well, on that day movie goers will be able to get their first peek at footage from the film. Several scenes were shown at Comic-Con and I’m assuming they’ll premiere some newer footage during the day long event.

Over at /Film they’ve listed the latest Avatar Day info via the studio’s press release. Here’s what we know so far:

The 15 minutes of footage will screen only in 3D at “select cinemas and IMAX theaters.”
“Details on locations and reserving tickets for this extraordinary and unprecedented experience will be announced soon.”
The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX® 3-D, IMAX® 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online.
Also on Avatar Day: “Ubisoft will unveil the trailer for their video game James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, and Mattel will reveal the action figures for the film’s Avatar and alien Na’vi characters.”

Darn you James Cameron! I need this movie to come out now. After seeing some footage from this past weekend, I can honestly say it’s worth looking into. The design of the Na’vi and the melding of the actors with the CG creatures is an amazing feat. I can’t wait until more is revealed!
