With a passing as monumental as Steve Jobs, word is coming from many famous people their thoughts on the man and his work. Steven Spielberg said “Steve Jobs was the greatest inventor since Thomas Edison. He put the world at our fingertips.” And with Twitter it’s been easy for celebrities to share their reactions.

Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted “Steve lived the California Dream every day of his life and he changed the world and inspired all of us.” while Paris Hilton said “So sad to hear about Steve Jobs. He was a genius and one of the most innovative people on earth. He changed the world in so many ways.” The event prompted a record-breaking amount of tweets, at the rate of 10,000 per second, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kevin Smith wrote “Steve Jobs! Thanks for never settling for the way things were during a life you spent showing us how things could be. O Captain! My captain!” While Ashton Kutcher added “I never thought I could be so busted up about the loss of someone I never met” Roger Ebert noted a sentiment many expressed: “I’m reading about the loss of Steve Jobs on the 17th Macintosh I’ve owned.” Albert Brooks added “Had the pleasure of working for him and knowing him. He was our Edison. R.I.P. Steve Jobs.”

Bono, reached for comment by MTV due to U2′s help in selling the iPod, said “Steve told me as proud as he was of Apple and Pixar, his real pride was his family. He was a thoughtful and tender father, and loved nothing more than hanging out in the house with his belle Laurene and the kids. I already miss him … one of a very small group of anarchic Americans who through technology literally invented the 21st century. We will all miss the hardware software Elvis.”

Two And A Half Men: Season 9, Episode 1 Recap – Bye Charlie Sheen, Hello Ashton Kutcher

Well, it finally happened last night—the first non-Charlie Sheen episode of Two and a Half Man aired last night. The show, which, even with Sheen in the starring role was still one of the crappiest comedies on TV, is now starring Ashton Kutcher since Sheen publically flamed out and was kicked off the program. Many were curious how Sheen’s character, Charlie Harper, would be killed off, and how Kutcher’s character, Walden Schmidt, would be introduced. Well, Sheen’s character got pushed in front of a train in Paris (“His body just exploded like a balloon full of meat”), and Kutcher played a man who tried to kill himself in the ocean, and then decides to buy Sheen’s character’s house instead. Oh, the hilarity, right? Wrong. And it seems most critics agree.

Todd VanDerWerff of the The AV Club came down hard:

The problem is that Charlie Harper’s function was never horribly well defined. He was just a guy who sat around and tossed out horrible one-liners. So that means that Walden Schmidt feels a little desperate, a little too much like a show that prided itself on pushing people away as much as possible—a show that started with a funeral chorus of the theme song guys singing “Men” to the tune of the funeral march, for God’s sake—trying its darnedest to get people to like it. God willing, it’s not going to work out.

David Hinckley of The New York Daily News was not impressed with Kutcher:

Ashton Kutcher proved Monday night as he joined the cast of “Two and a Half Men” that he has no problem being naked.

Now he just needs to work on being funny.

Matt Roush of TV Guide laid it down like this:

Lots of fart and penis humor before it was all over, because you didn’t think Sheen’s departure would prompt a reinvention of CBS’s most successful and raunchiest comedy, did you? The show is and always has been a literal gag machine. “This is depressingly familiar,” said Alan toward the end, shortly before making his latest pathetic masturbation joke — some things never change — and for those who’ve never been amused, that was no doubt true. But for the millions who’ve reveled in its caustic innuendo and helped make the show a cash cow in syndication, there was no doubt a sense of relief in seeing the machine chugging along again with no apologies.

The consensus? Two and a Half Men still sucks, but now it sucks even more, thanks to Ashton Kutcher’s schtick. Congrats, CBS!

No Strings Attached: Movie Review

It’s been a mighty successful month for Ms. Natalie Portman with her engagement, pregnancy and Golden Globe. There’s nothing like destroying a streak of victory with a shitty rom-com! The Oscar-nominee teams up with the painfully one dimensional Ashton Kutcher in Ivan Reitman’s, No Strings Attached. The film pollutes theaters nationwide Friday, January 21st.

Check out the review below…

The Players:

Director: Ivan Reitman
Writers: Elizabeth Meriwether, Michael Samonek
Cast: Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Olivia Thirlby

The Plot:

Adam (Kutcher) a television writer and bona-fide “dude” has the hots for Emma (Portman) a Doctor. Emma’s total disinterest in a relationship makes her enormously appealing to Adam, and in his desperation he agrees to partake in strictly sexual interactions with her. No snuggling, breakfast, or labeling…a dream for most young men, but not for Adam. Buckle up as Kutcher puts his abs and recycled jokes to work to snag the girl!

The Good:

Supporting Roles: When supporting characters outshine your leads (…leads as famous as Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher) it’s time to call cut and toss the production. The few bursts of laughter from the audience came directly after deliveries by Mindy Kaling and Greta Gerwig, who play Emma’s roommates.
Chicks That Don’t Want Commitment: At risk of leaving anything overly feministic in my tracks, I’ll be brief. I’m pleased that a rom-com FINALLY acknowledges that, as shocking as it may seem, not all women are pining for outrageously serious relationships.

The Good/Bad:

Ashton Kutcher: I place equal certainty in both my knowledge of the sun rising tomorrow and Ashton Kutcher movies being utterly stupid. For this, he earns a gold star for consistency with his unwavering ability to be precisely himself. There are zero surprises here.
Cheesy: I like to maintain that rom-com’s invite the cheese. If you’re into that, you’ll potentially find this picture amusing.

The Bad:

Natalie Portman: Really? You’re vying for an Oscar nod while promoting this horrifying display of cinema? I send condolences to her publicity team. Portman, who rarely fails to please, came up short this time around. She hasn’t really scratched the surface of comedy since Garden State, and it’s quite clear why. Not only was she completely un-hilarious but generally speaking, she simply couldn’t commit to this poorly written character. There was nothing fluid about her performance.

Overall:

Here’s the sad fact: Plenty of teenage girls will DIG this movie for it’s eye candy and “aww” moments. Those of you looking for something with a little more substance should kindly purchase a ticket to another film.

Rating: 4/10

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher Talk No Strings Attached

Veteran director Ivan Reitman returns to the big screen this weekend with his latest film, No Strings Attached . It’s a non-romantic comedy about two friends, who decide to use each other for sex and nothing more. The film stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher as the unconventional couple, who act out some strange scenarios as their characters. We sat down and spoke with the duo about their latest feature, which centers heavily on casual sex. Despite all the debauchery they assure you that safe sex is the best sex, and at the end of the day, this movie is more about female empowerment than anything else.

Thanks for having safe sex in the movie. Can you guys comment on the prevalence of sex in films, how that affects teens, and how it’s been glorified in the media recently? Natalie, as a pregnant person can you comment on that?

Natalie Portman: Well, I’m not a teen. That’s the first thing I’ll say. I’m a grownup. Obviously, it is really prevalent in our country and I think that’s part of what the movie addresses. We have so much sex in our media that’s disassociated from emotions. We have so much separation between feeling, the emotional and the physical side of sex. They really do belong together. Yes, condoms were fake used, in the fake sex scenes in this movie.

Ashton Kutcher: I think there’s so much that’s not said about sex in our country. One of the things that I find really interesting in looking at this, and I don’t want to veer off on a weird human trafficking thing, but one of the interesting things, especially for women, in the sex education process in schools. The one thing that they teach about is how to get pregnant and how to not get pregnant. But they don’t really talk about sex as a point of pleasure for women. So from a purely entertainment point of view, to create a movie with a female lead that is empowered with her own sexuality I think is a really powerful thing. I think if we can give teenage people something to think about from a sex perspective I would say that it would be to start opening up a conversation where women are empowered with their own sexual experiences from an educational level as well as an entertainment level.

With so much of this being movie being about sex, do the two of you have perimeters about it? How you do approach those scenes and get through them? Is it still embarrassing?

Portman: I’m pretty immature. So I think I get pretty embarrassed easily. I would check out once in a while certain shots to make sure that I felt okay because sometimes once you see it, like, there was one of the panties coming off that we did and after I watched I was like, ‘Oh, that’s not bad,’ because it was really quick and it wasn’t lingering on anything that I felt modest about. So I checked a little. You do sort of go the opposite direction between takes, like, ‘So, what are you doing this weekend?,’ like totally benign conversations to make it a little normal.

Kutcher: I just start by apologizing. You sort of try to set some ground rules and apologize for them. Someone told me, and I’m not sure who the actor was – I think it was Sir Lawrence Olivier that said…I always use Sir Lawrence Olivier. When in doubt use Sir Lawrence Olivier. I think he said something to the affect of, like, ‘I apologize if I get aroused and I apologize if I do not get aroused,’ and you have to say it with the accent. But there’s sort of always that kind of awkward state of, like, ‘Is this okay? Is that okay?’ Then in between its like, ‘Let’s act like nothing happened,’ and then you see how good of an actor you are.

Do you guys think that friendship can survive sex?

Kutcher: I wouldn’t know. I haven’t been fortunate enough to try one of those relationships out. I really think that whoever you’re with ultimately needs to be your friend. So all the really successful, happy relationships that I know of, the people that are together are friends anyway. And I don’t know that sex always has to have feelings, but I think that friendship always does. So if you’re friends you’re going to have feelings of some sort, some layer, some level of a deeper feeling. I don’t know that it’s completely possible.

This is Natalie’s first rom-com. So, Ashton, did you try to make it easy for her or did you tease her mercilessly?

Kutcher: I learned more from Natalie in one day of being on set together than I can ever possibly teach her in a billion years. She may not have done a rom-com before, but she’s done so much work on so many different levels. I even watch Garden State or something like that’s comedic in and of itself, but also has true and specific organic performances. I don’t know that there’s anything I can really teach her.

Natalie, did you create a back story for this character, something for how she got to this point?

Portman: Absolutely, but a lot of it was provided to me in Liz’s script which was really wonderful about sort of having this incredible loss early on and not really wanting to be the sort of pillar for her family and not wanting to get hurt. Also, I think that most women know someone like this if they’re not like this themselves. They know what happens, that thing that leads you to a point where you’re not even looking for intimacy anymore. You’re just looking for the physical side of it and not the emotional side of it. Something breaks a little bit before you get to that point. It’s not just a way that you’re born.

Natalie, you were also an executive producer on this film. How did you balance that with being in the movie?

Portman: Well, it was a really exciting process to get to be involved for the first time so early, working with Liz [Meriwether] and Ivan [Reitman]. I came on a couple of years I think before the project. So to get, to sort of watch their process and to get to talk to them about the script, they were definitely controlling that process, but it was fun to be included in the evolution of the script and seeing how it changed and why it changed, to have Ivan’s expertise in pacing and figuring out, like, ‘At the end there needs to be more movement,’ because in the original script that was written it was sort of a contained scene at the end. He said, ‘No. We have to get them moving, on the road.’ To learn those things through the process was really exciting.

No Strings Attached To Win Weekend Box Office

Last weekend’s box office winner The Green Hornet will find itself sliding to the number two spot because Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman’s No Strings Attached should have enough steam to plow the competition. Moviegoers will find themselves catching up with last weekend’s Golden Globe winners as well as leftover holiday fare such as Little Fockers and Tron Legacy. All in all it should be an interesting weekend at the theater.

And now on to our predictions…..

# 1 No Strings Attached

Riding the wave of her Golden Globe win and future Oscar Nomination, arrives Portman and Kutcher’s No Strings Attached, which should land itself at the top spot this weekend. Portman is untested when it comes to romantic comedies, as most of the box office weight will rely heavily on Kutcher whose forays into the genre have seen varied success with first weekend openings as high as $22.5M for Guess Who? to a low of $ 7.5M for A Lot Like Love. Add in an uneven marketing campaign with trailers that consistently changed from week to week and No Strings Attached should find itself with a modest yet successful opening.

Our Prediction: $16-17M Opening Weekend Box Office.

#2 The Green Hornet

With a solid opening weekend, good audience feedback via Cinemascore, and a lack of any real direct competition The Green Hornet should come in second place this weekend. The real big question is whether Hornet will hold up well in the upcoming weeks to become a true blockbuster OR perform like the ill-fated Daredevil. Only time will tell.

Our Prediction: 15M Weekend Box Office.

# 3. True Grit

Continued word of mouth, small week to week declines and probable Oscar nominations will help keep True Grit sitting at the number three spot this weekend. The Coen Brother’s latest has seen its box office soar to new heights and has now opened the possibility of True Grit becoming the first ever $200M grossing film for the directors.

Our Prediction- 9-9.5M Weekend Box Office.

# 4. Black Swan

With a Portman’s Golden Globe win for best actress, possible Oscar nominations, and an ever increasing box office take, look for Black Swan to land at number four this weekend as it moves closer to becoming the first $100 million grosser Darren Aronofsky’s career.

Our Prediction: $8.5-9M Weekend Box Office.

# 5. The Kings Speech

With a Golden Globe win for Best Actor with Colin Firth, likely Oscar nominations, and a successful expansion last weekend look for The King’s Speech to hold steady at number five.

Our Prediction: $8.5M Weekend Box Office Take.

# 6. The Dilemma

With a weak debut opening, moviegoers catching up on recent award season films, The Dilemma should see its gross cut in half to land at number six.

Our Prediction: $8-8.5M Weekend Box Office.

# 7. The Fighter

The Fighter is riding high on awards momentum with wins for both Melissa Leo and Christian Bale from this past weekend’s Golden Globes. Factor in likely Oscar nominations, and strong weekend-weekend holds, The Fighter should land itself at the number seven spot.

Natalie Portman Gets Frisky in No Strings Attached Red Band Trailer

Paramount Pictures has just released a red band trailer for their upcoming romantic comedy No Strings Attached. We should call it a non-romantic comedy because romance isn’t involved. It’s just straight to the point sex. The film stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher and is directed by Ivan Reitman. Not a bad combo. Check out the trailer below but beware there’s “grown folks” stuff in it…

We’re not sure if this is a worthy competitor to the trailer the other non-romantic comedy Friends With Benefits, which literally has the same premise. That movie features Portman’s Black Swan co-star Mila Kunis. Doesn’t that just scream irony? We guess they both needed a break after starring in the evil ballet drama!

Official Synopsis:

In the film, Emma (Portman) and Adam (Kutcher) are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly “no strings attached.” “No strings” means no jealousy, no expectations, no fighting, no flowers, no baby voices. It means they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, in whatever public place they want, as long as they don’t fall in love. The question becomes- who’s going to fall first? And can their friendship survive?

No Strings Attached Clip: Ashton Kutcher Congratulates Natalie Portman

Paramount has just released a clip from their upcoming romantic comedy No Strings Attached. The film stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, who both appear in this clip entitled “Congrats.” It answers the question: What happens after you sleep with your best friend but don’t call them the next day? Take a look and find out…

The clip starts off promising with Kutcher’s character grilling Portman about why she’s been ignoring him since they had sex but then it all goes downhill. Once she begins talking about peanut allergies and throat constriction we started to tune out. Maybe this scene really goes somewhere after the clip ends but from what we saw it’s mediocre.

Synopsis (via Neccel)

Natalie Portman plays Emma Franklin, a doctor who’s not really looking for love and is not ready for a relationship because of time issues and just wants to have someone to have sex with. She decided to have sex with her friend, Adam Kurtzman played by Ashton Kutcher. Things get complicated when a plain sexual relationship is mixed up with emotions. Adam falls for Emma and the problem arises when the feeling is not mutual. But is it really only sex for Emma? Will she learn to fall in love with Adam eventually?

New Year’s Eve Castings: Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank

If you were a fan of Garry Marshall’s romantic ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day, you’re in luck because there’s more where that came from. According to THR, four high profile actors are in negotiations to star in his follow up to the film entitled, New Year’s Eve. What do you think of Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Hilary Swank getting on this rom-com train?

The trade reports that the film centers on the “intertwining stories of a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through romance over the course of New Year’s Eve.” The premise sounds simple enough and it’s almost an exact replica of what occurred in the first film.

As for the new cast members, they’ll add fresh blood to the sequel which will feature De Niro as “a bitter dying man in a hospital, while Pfeiffer will be a frustrated executive secretary who decides to tackle her unfulfilled resolutions. Swank would play a producer of the famed Times Square New Year’s Eve show.”

On another note, Ashton Kutcher will also appear in the film as a “guy who hates New Year’s Eve.” This is interesting considering the fact that he appeared in Valentine’s Day as well.

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher in No Strings Attached Trailer

Somehow, someone got the talented Natalie Portman to star alongside Ashton Kutcher in a romantic comedy. That someone was director Ivan Reitman, and it was for his new film No Strings Attached. Not only does it star Portman and Kutcher, but Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and a couple of people from NBC’s “The Office” are also in it. Take a look…

In the film, Portman and Kutcher’s characters are best friends who decide to embark on a relationship of casual sex. Their friends with benefits plan gets a little complicated when one of them starts to fall in love with the other and yearns for a real relationship. From the beginning you could tell that this plan was a recipe for disaster but sometimes you have to let people find out for themselves.

This is surprisingly funny. We were not expecting this to be interesting or refreshing at all and its both of those things. Even though Kutcher’s not the best actor in the world he’s always been good at doing comedy, so he’s sticking with his strengths here. And it’s great to see Portman do something a little lighter that still allows her to be independent. We’re actually intrigued by this.

Ashton Gets Political With Twitter…or something.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore attended the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative this week, and talked about how Twitter and social media can help…end white slavery? Wait, wait, it’s the 21st century, we don’t call it white slavery anymore…Human sex trafficking. Yeah, that’s it. Anyway, check out his statement that I can’t seem to make sense of after the jump…

Taking a cue from former President Bill Clinton, whose latest goals are set to help eradicate human sex trafficking, Ashton and Demi will be starting a foundation called Real Men Don’t Buy Girls, which will apparently guilt trip men into not using prostitutes that are likely trafficked from other countries. At a panel with Arianna Huffington and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, Kutcher had this to say:

“Demi and I are about to announce a commitment to launch an advocacy campaign to end child sex trafficking, which I think ties directly to the power of this new media — this social media.” He continued, “I was looking the other day at the top 100 media moguls of the world. Ninety percent of which are white males over the age of 40… If you look at the top 100 people on Twitter, 30% are women. Seven percent are African American. They come from different socioeconomic backgrounds…That’s the true democratization of media.”

So wait…the democratization of media will end slavery? If everyone complains loudly enough on the internet, then no one will pay for sex anymore? What? Sure, a few of the top 100 twitter users may be women or black, and a lot of people might be reading about what they had for breakfast,but are you actually comparing their influence to the top 100 media moguls of the world?
And how will this foundation work? Everyone twittering about not to using prostitutes who might be sex slaves? Is everyone complaining on the internet going to stop people from paying for sex?

Two New Clips From Killers

Killers, the action-romantic-comedy that will bring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher together, is less than a month away. Two more clips are in, one with very few words, the other with too many words (if you ask me), but the latter makes up for it with some much needed humor. Check it out below…

Killers centers on a single woman (Heigl) who meets the man (Kutcher) of her dreams while on vacation with her parents. She eventually begins to date they guy and they fall in love, but the only problem is he has a shady occupation that involves bullets flying ever so often. Soon the two love birds are on the run of their lives when they discover that their neighbors are out to kill them. Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara also star as Heigl’s parents.

The first clip seems to be filled with the usual action-comedy staples with Kutcher running and panting, and cars crashing and exploding. As for the latter, as dull as Heigl’s character may appear to be, it’s nice to see some hints of comedy. We’re even introduced to a new “marriage” term, “the three-year-ooze.” Nice one! Killers hits theaters on June 4, 2010.

If you thought you could go a summer without seeing Katherine Heigl in a romantic comedy you were wrong. Dead wrong! A new trailer has been released for her and Ashton Kutcher’s latest film Killers (sigh) and it’s just as boring as the previous one. Are your ready for some mediocre action, acting, and romance? Check it out below…

Killers centers on a recently single woman who meets the man of her dreams while on vacation with her parents. She eventually begins to date they guy and they fall in love, the only problem is he has a shady occupation that involves bullets flying ever so often. Her idyllic life turns to shambles once she and her new boyfriend realize their neighbors have been contracted to kill them. Besides Kutcher and Heigl, the cast includes Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara as Heigl’s parents.

We’ve tried to give this movie the benefit of the doubt but it just doesn’t look entertaining. It comes across as very generic and forced. Heigl and Kutcher look like the lighter versions of Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise in their upcoming action-comedy Knight and Day.

Killers debuts in theaters on June 4, 2010.
