This week has offered a flurry of news on J.J. Abrams‘s Star Trek reboot sequel – tentatively titled Star Trek 2 – which is scheduled for release May 17, 2013. Though we’ve yet to see a replacement for the main villain since Benecio Del Toro dropped out on Monday, there are more things to relay about the cast and the villain.

Recently cast members John Cho and Anton Yelchin were interviewed by E Online, and both said they had no idea what was in the script and said they hadn’t read it. Whether that’s true or not is always up for question in situations like this, but with the first film (and J.J. Abrams’s) notorious heavy security, it’s just as likely they’re telling the truth. Alice Eve has joined the cast according to Variety, along with Peter Weller, but with Del Toro out as the villain, that will be the next big casting break.

Though it’s true that Abrams confirmed that Del Toro wouldn’t be playing Khan in the sequel to Drew McWeeny at Hitfix, what he didn’t confirm or deny was if Khan was the villain. And it seems that both Latino Review and Vulture have found evidence that the bad guy will be Khan after all.

What Star Trek nerds will tell you is that Khan Noonien Singh first interacted with Kirk and company in the original series, which then set up the movie The Wrath of Khan. With the altered timeline of the new films Kirk and Khan couldn’t have met yet (god, typing this making me feel +1 Nerdy). This seems a decision based on the idea that Khan is probably the best known single villain in the franchise, though there are already the Klingons and Romulans, etc., those were an offshoot of the politics of the era; Klingons were the stand-in Russians, though you could just as easily say they were the Native Americans to the Enterprise’s cowboys.

So if it is Khan, that leaves about three options. One is that they rework Space Seed (the original episode that Khan appeared in) for the feature film, they ret-con a relationship between Kirk (or someone else aboard the ship) and Khan to give it some punch, or they pretend that they had interactions between movies. Perhaps it’s just a famous name, and that’s it, though that character has a certain history in the franchise, so…

Worst case scenario is that Kirk and Khan went to high school together. “Kirk… you gave me… a wedgie.”

Does Khan as the villain excite you?

On the surface, Fright Night has a number of strikes going against it. It’s a remake. It’s in 3-D. The original is loved by fans and unknown to the general public – meaning that its name brand value is low, and those who love the original are probably going to be annoyed. but to make it they assembled a great cast (including Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin), and they had a good starting point. It would be nice to say that the film overcomes those obstacles, but – though there are some nice touches here and there – it doesn’t work. Check out our review….

The Players:

Director: Craig Gillespie

Writer: Marti Noxon

Actors: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Toni Collette, David Tenant

Cinematography by: Javier Aguirresarobe

Music by: Ramin Djawadi

The Plot:

Charlie Brewster (Yelchin) is dating hot girl Amy (Poots), and lives with his single mom Jane (Collette) in Las Vegas. They live next door to Jerry Dandridge (Farrell), who says he’s a construction worker, and comes across as a bull-headed straight guy who’s obviously pretty hot. Charlie’s been ducking old friend “Evil” Ed (Mintz-Plasse), but is bribed into doing some investigating with him, as Ed thinks Jerry’s a vampire. When Ed goes missing, Charlie feels guilty enough to check on his neighbor, and there Charlie discovers his neighbor is a vampire. He goes to Peter Vincent (Tenant) to get some help. Vincent is a A-list magician with an interest in the occult. But now Charlie is on Jerry’s radar, and that’s a bad place to be.

The Good:

The Setting: Las Vegas is a city built on the industry of partying, and so it’s a great place to visit, but not a stable place to live. The idea of people moving away randomly and a transient life is a perfect setting for a vampire. You wish they had done more with it.

A Mid-Section Set Piece: There’s a sequence in the middle where Brewster sneaks into Jerry’s house, which allows Jerry to toy with Charlie, and it’s tense, funny, and has a great ending.

The Comedy: David Tenant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse play the more comic relief roles, and every time they’re on screen the film gets juice out of Tenant’s rock-n-roll alcoholic magician and Evil Ed’s cutting jokes.

The Transition into the Third Act: with movies like this, there’s generally a period where the main character feels like the boy who cried wolf. One of the best parts of the film is that you think you’re going to have to sit through more of that, but the film changes gears quickly.

The Mixed:

Colin Farrell: He’s great on screen, but he doesn’t have much of a character to play. It’s great to see Farrell maturing into the film star Hollywood thought he might be ten years ago, and it’s a star performance, but the script lets him down.

The Bad:

The Remake Factor: The original followed a young boy who’s about to lose his virginity when he’s distracted by two men moving in next door (and may be distracted in that way). What follows is a very smart B movie that then puts Peter Vincent – a cinematic vampire hunter – into a situation where he’s confronted with the real thing. It’s well worth checking out. But when this film tries to work in those details, it doesn’t know how to. Here Peter Vincent is a magician, and though it would be impossible to replicate a horror movie host in modern times, why Charlie goes to a stage magician he doesn’t even like for advice is thin. And then how it brings Vincent in for the third act is even thinner and adds a plot point that could be removed and change nothing. There are numerous other examples of this. Like…

Evil Ed and Charlie Brewster: The starting point for their relationship is great. Brewster’s gone on to be a part of the popular kid set, while Ed’s a loser. In the original they were friends who playfully mocked each other (though there was an underlying tension there). With their relationship over, it’s Ed who tips off Charlie about his neighbor the vampire. But though it’s understandable that Charlie would want nothing to do with “Evil” Ed, it starts the film with a protagonist being mean to the one person who is right. And then later it’s revealed his girlfriend likes him because he’s a geek, so he ended that friendship for the wrong reasons. And then later, when Ed and Charlie confront each other under different circumstances it doesn’t pay off. So you’re left with a lot of things that seem to be in there because of the original – but don’t work on their own terms – on top of a main character who’s not very empathetic in terms of the narrative.

Thin Main Characters: Pure evil doesn’t really need a motivation, but you’re left wondering why Jerry lives where he does, and why he does some of the things he does – and a lot of it comes across as writers using the fact that he’s a vampire to avoid those questions. But he’s obviously been doing this for decades (if not centuries), so it raises questions that go unanswered. And then there’s Charlie Brewster, who doesn’t really care about a vampire next door until it’s a threat to his life, and spends the majority of the film responding to things that are happening around him, on top of being a bad boyfriend and jerk to his old buddy. If the tumult of being a teen is supposed to be reflected in his “journey” it doesn’t play.

Overall:

A fumble. Like a number of remakes, it’s either not faithful enough or entirely too faithful to emerge as a complete thought. For every good decision, there’s a number of bad ones. It’s too bad, because it feels like there’s a good movie in it.

Rating: 4.5/10

The first trailer for the remake of Fright Night (and much of the early material) focused on Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. Yelchin plays teenager Charlie Brewster, who thinks his next door neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Farrell) is a vampire. What it didn’t do is spotlight much of Evil Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) or Peter Vincent (David Tenant), two of the most memorable characters from the original. Now there’s a new trailer, and Evil Ed and Peter Vincent finally make their bows. Check it out.

Okay, so this tells us little about Evil Ed, and doesn’t hint at the sexual confusions that can be found in the original. What it does do is give a better look at this version’s take on Peter Vincent, who is obviously modeled on Chris Angel and David Blaine. Since there aren’t a lot of hosts of horror programs like there were in the 1970′s and 1980′s (maybe teenagers know who Elvira is, but probably not), it’s a smart choice, and is one of the keys to this film working on its own terms.

Though I’m on the fence about this remake in general (the original is one of the best genre pictures from the 80′s), the end bit where Jerry Dandridge blows up the house to avoid the rule of having to be invited in is a very clever idea. How much of this works on its own terms is yet to be seen, but this new footage gives hope. The film hits theaters August 19. Working against the movie is that it’s in 3-D. We shall see how far that format’s stock fall in the next couple of weeks.

Have you seen the original Fright Night?

Jodie Foster steps in front and behind the camera to tackle the controversial subject of mental health in an extremely honest, yet somehow ridiculously humorous story about a man who is unable to cope with life and so he puts up a front, an Australian Beaver front in The Beaver. The concept is odd and the film doesn’t get much more normal, but it’s refreshing to see someone take such a big risk on a topic that is both important and relevant…

The Players:

Director: Jodie Foster

Writer: Kyle Killen

Actors: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Cherry Jones, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence, Riley Thomas Stewart, Zachary Booth

Original Music by: Marcelo Zarvos

Cinematography by: Hagen Bogdanski

The Plot:

A man suffers from severe depression and ends up losing nearly everything because he can’t seem to find a way to deal with life. Just when things are at their worst and there’s no where left to go, a side of him comes out that helps him overcome his fears — that is as long as he doesn’t speak but allows his Aussie beaver hand-puppet to communicate for him.

The Good:

Dealing With Mental Health: The film raises some important issues about mental health in an extremely interesting and innovative way. Many people suffer from mental illness and recent socio-economical circumstances have made life very hard for many — there’s no doubt that there are numerous people dealing with issues of depression and other forms of mental illness right now and those people are seeking ways of getting their lives back. Though tying a puppet to ones arm isn’t necessarily the answer and might seem a bit far-fetched, people need to find a way to fight back. So even though the premise for this film is a bit crazy, it makes some rather relevant points and raises some questions worth talking about.

Mel Gibson: Who knows where he’s pulling this character from, yes one could tie it into recent gossip, but whether it be life or character acting, I’m not here to judge, I’m here to say it worked extremely well for this film. Gibson has an innate charisma that he’s able to stifle in his own body and yet still show on screen through a stuffed beaver. His character is layered, flawed, pathetically sweet and fascinating to watch.

The Side Story: The most interesting part of this film was the young, troubled teenagers played by the equally talented duo Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. Their characters were flawed and twisted, but honest and interesting. Their relationship was one worth its own film entirely — I kept finding myself wanting them to turn the camera around and show the other side of the story.

Fearless: This is a film that walks all the lines, takes a number of big risks, and isn’t afraid to make you feel uncomfortable — I won’t say that it works 100% of the time, but I respect Foster’s willingness to really “go there” and not just make a cliched drama but take those risks and make a film that is more than just entertainment, is something potentially important.

The Bad:

Shift: The film is a bit segmented, it kind of starts are one film then completely shifts to another. Though the character quite obviously has a big changes in his life, the film still needs to all tie together.

The Audience: The audience that I watched the film with was cold as ice. It’s important that one knows that it’s okay to laugh at the hard times in life but sometimes it’s necessary. This film capitalizes on that, and I don’t know if it was the films fault or just the lack of understanding from those around me but something made the screening of this film cold and it’s one that when given the time I’ll definitely check out again.

Overall:

As I said, my viewing of this film was not great and I don’t know if that’s due to problems with the film or just a horrible audience (trust me, it’s happened more than once before). The film is not perfect, but it’s got some interesting points, takes a number of big risks, has some absolutely fantastic performances and if you’re looking for something outside of the box it’s definitely worth your time.

Rating: 6.5/10

The Beaver is in theaters starting May 6th!

The Fright Night remake is due August 19, and the first official images from the film are now online. The film stars Anton Yelchin as Charlie Brewster, who has a vampire (Colin Farrell) move in next door. The Craig Gillespie-directed remake tones down some of the sexual subtext of the original, which is part of the reason why the film still plays well, but the new spin on the material has yet to be revealed. The film also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Imogen Poots. Check out the stills…

The success or failure (at least artistically) of the film seems to ride on the makers doing something new or interesting with the original material. The first film had great Hitchcockian direction and a sexually charged subtext. The film begins with Charlie about to lose his virginity only to be distracted by two men moving in next door. Though it has been noted that the actor who played the original Evil Ed eventually went into gay pornography, and the female lead later outed herself as a lesbian, there’s a constant pan-sexuality to the film. But it also works whether you pick up on that or not.

The film test screened this week, and word has covered a wide spectrum. The film was shot to be R-rated, if the film doesn’t work, expect it to be cut down for a PG-13.

Are you excited for Fright Night?

Last night it was announced that Drake Doremus’ romantic drama Like Crazy was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Drama, one of the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, starring Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, is a look at what happens when a young couple falls madly in love, but is forced into a long distance relationship by no choice of their own. This quiet movie snuck up on audiences at Sundance, building buzz late in the game, but winning hearts as the festival went on. To learn more about this award winning sleeper, check out the rest of the review after the jump…

Like Crazy is the story of Jacob and Anna, a young couple who fall madly in love shortly before they’re set to graduate from college. Their infatuation is so strong that Anna disregards the limits of her English student visa after graduating. When she tries to return from the UK to be with Jacob, she is denied entry to the U.S. The couple, clearly meant to be with each other, must then figure out how to make their relationship work from nearly half a world away. But between their budding careers, the cultures of their respective homes (L.A. and London), and the sheer desire for companionship, things get complicated and messy pretty quickly.

The film’s strength lies completely in its two young stars, Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones. The film, shot from a 50 page outline rather than a script, relies on improvised dialogue and natural chemistry. Yelchin and Jones both bring a vibrant energy to their characters, driving home the sense that these two are really in love with each other. Yelchin, doing his absolute best to grow facial hair, looks more adult than he ever has, thus allowing the heavy drama to seem more appropriate for him as an actor. Yet he still looks still boyish enough that the idea of first love is definitely not out of the question. And Felicity Jones enormous, shining eyes and broad smile are enough to make anyone fall in love with her at first sight. It’s like she’s got all the best facial qualities of Mila Kunis, Rachel Bilson, and Rachel McAdams, combined.

Another of the film’s actors, Winter’s Bone’s Jennifer Lawrence, deserves special mention for her understated performance as Samantha, the girl who Jacob finds himself with when the challenges of distance from Anna seem insurmountable. Her quiet devastation as Jacob wavers back and forth between which girl he belongs with makes hers one of the strongest performances in the film. She stands out not as a villain, but an innocent victim of circumstance, and a reminder that collateral damage is nearly inevitable with young love.

Doremus’ previous film, Douchebag, was largely shrugged off by critics and audiences at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. But he returns with newfound focus, and a softer touch with Like Crazy. The film is well directed in the sense that it avoids the pitfalls of other “mumble-core” movies (heavy on dialogue, low on budget, and focused on every day, interpersonal relationships), by keeping itself from being too self aware and fraught with introverted neuroses. Doremus seems particularly adept in extracting complex emotions from his cast, but keeping them from chewing up the scenery with the kind of large, loud acting that may come with emotional discussions and arguments.
But the film is not without its faults. The relationship in question is delved into far too quickly. We are given no reasons why these two are so in love with each other, just that they are. They go from the awkward, “I think I like this person,” phase to fully head over heels without anything in between. Doremus should count himself lucky that the two leads have chemistry strong enough to keep this from glaring at the audience throughout the film. Also, there is not a clear sense of time in the film conveyed by the editing which, again, makes the audience question the authenticity of the story’s plot points, at times. “Could they really fall so deeply in or out of love quite so quickly? I suppose, with enough time, but how long has it really been?” was a thought that popped up more than a couple of times over the course of the film.

The film’s biggest flaw, it seems, is its insistence on maintaining a voyeuristic camera sensibility throughout. We are constantly looking through door frames and around corners, as the story unfolds. It sacrifices aesthetic for the sake of tone, the effect of which is unclear and unnecessary. What is the benefit of alienating the audience from the characters by making them feel like they don’t belong there? Furthermore, they’ve paid their hard earned money to see a movie; why not give them a cinematic experience, instead of cutting off a full third of the screen with a blank wall?

Like Crazy is the kind of romance film that ends up feeling more like a cautionary tale. Long distance relationships are not as fun or cute as presented in the trite Drew Barrymore comedy Going the Distance. They are complicated, messy, and frankly, often impossible. But the sublime performances of Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones make this film more about the emotions one feels when they are in love, rather than the difficulty of relationships. The actors in this film have earned their place at the top of a new generation of dramatic young performers, and will continue to be recognized for this as Like Crazy reaches more and more viewers.

Rating: 7.5/10

Over the weekend Summit Entertainment finally released the first trailer for Mel Gibson’s latest film, The Beaver. The movie has been held hostage in limbo for ages thanks to the unfortunate public scandals surrounding its star. Now that the trailer is available online we can decide for ourselves whether or not the film (or Gibson) is worth our time and money. Check it out…

Official Synopsis:

Walter Black (Mel Gibson) is suffering from extreme depression. As he spends most of his days sleeping or trying different methods of self therapy, his wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) hides behind work and helplessly watches him fall apart; his youngest son Henry (Riley Thomas Stewart) becomes a hermit; his oldest son Porter (Anton Yelchin) writes his classmate’s essays for cash and secretly keeps a list of similarities between him and his father to avoid a similar future; and Walter’s toy company heads toward bankruptcy.

Walter soon hits bottom when Meredith kicks him out of the house, and he decides to get drunk and kill himself. The suicide attempt goes awry, and upon waking up, Walter is introduced to “the Beaver” – a beaver puppet he had found in the trash and put on his hand during his drinking binge – who suddenly speaks to him, in a British accent. With the help of the Beaver (a facet of Walter’s personality), Walter gets a new lease on life and returns home.

Doesn’t it seem like they just showed us the entire movie from start to finish in two and a half minutes? We’re not fans of revealing too much in trailers and it looks like they went all out here. Also, is there a reason why Gibson’s Beaver voice sounds like Ray Winstone? It would have been kind of cool if Gibson picked up some tips from a ventriloquist so he could talk without moving his lips. Other than that the movie looks OK, but we’re not sure how successful it will be when it’s FINALLY released in theaters.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you interested in seeing the film?

The casting of British actor Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker has left plenty of us die-hard Spider-Man fans confused. Sony claimed that they wanted to go for a younger, more urban Parker yet they hired the talented but 26 year old Garfield for the role. If that wasn’t odd enough there’s a rumor going around that Terminator Salvation and Star Trek star Anton Yelchin might be up for the part of Harry Osborn, which was previously played by James Franco in the original series.

According to IMDB, Yelchin is “rumored” to star as Osborn opposite Garfield. Both Garfield and Yelchin are talented actors and they both have that “youthful” look about them. Yelchin was actually one of the many actors in contention to play Spider-Man before Garfield landed the part so he could have impressed the producers so much that they want him in another role.

The problem with him being cast as Harry is Garfield. Isn’t Osborn supposed to be a little bit cooler, more stern, and more intimidating than Parker? Yet Garfield is a good 6 feet tall and Yelchin’s 5’9? Won’t there be a missing intimidation factor? I’m sure Yelchin can play a douche bag but come on. If the roles were reversed they would slightly make more sense but as they stand…meh.

What do you think of Yelchin playing Osborn? Do you think it could work?

Aaron Johnson lied to us! The Kick-Ass star was rumored to be a front runner to play Peter Parker in the rebooted Spider-Man franchise and when asked about it in an interview with Cinemablend he stated, “I would play another superhero, but not necessarily soon.” Does 2012 seem that far away to you? The LA Times is reporting that Johnson along with Terminator Salvation star Anton Yelchin has been added to the Spider-Man shortlist that currently includes Jamie Bell, Andrew Garfield, Josh Hutcherson, Alden Ehrenreich, and Frank Dillane.

Johnson may seem like the logical choice to play Parker but he’s got some serious competition. The actor will have to battle it out with Anton Yelchin who’s currently one of the most popular actors in his age group. He hit us with a one-two punch in 2009 with roles in two franchise films and with the exception of Jamie Bell, he’s got the best box office track record.

Sony will start screen testing the actors shortly and from there director Marc Webb will cut the fat and find the man destined to take Tobey Maguire’s place. Who do you think it will be?

Anton Yelchin won’t be satisfied until he’s starred in every cult favorite and commercially successful series ever created. The young actor already has Star Trek and Terminator Salvation under his belt and now he’s ready to tackle a property in the horror genre. Yelchin is currently in talks to star as the lead in the remake of the 1985 vampire flick, Fright Night.

The new Fright Night will stick to the original premise of a teenager who’s convinced that his neighbor is a vampire even though no one believes him. The lead character’s name of Charley Brewster will also remain the same and Yelchin will add his own dimension to the role similar to what he did with Kyle Reese in Terminator and Chekov in Star Trek.

Fright Night is a DreamWorks production and is being set up in the same vein as the 2007 hit Disturbia, which ended up being a break out film for Shia Labeouf. The remake will be directed by Craig Gillespie who helmed the indie drama Lars and the Real Girl, with a screenplay written by Marti Noxon who’s one of the creative powers behind the acclaimed AMC TV series “Mad Men.”

When it was first announced that this movie was being remade I wasn’t interested. Not just because it was a remake but because it was a remake of a vampire film and apparently those are all the rage right now. Yelchin is a talented young actor and this could be his big headlining moment, but for me the major selling point is the script. With the talent behind “Mad Men” taking on the story you can’t help but have a glimmer of hope that something good might come out of this.

Anton Yelchin appeared in two of this summer’s most anticipated films Star Trek and Terminator Salvation. After co-starring in such massive franchise hits, what’s a young actor to do? According to Empire, Yelchin has signed on for a role in Oscar winner Jodie Foster‘s upcoming feature, The Beaver. The project will have Foster pulling double duty as both a director and a co-star.

The Beaver is a black comedy that centers on a man on the brink of a nervous breakdown, who only relates to other people via a beaver hand puppet. Mel Gibson will play the mentally disturbed character in question, Jodie Foster will star as his wife, and Yelchin will portray their frustrated son. For the majority of the film, Yelchin will urge his mother to file for divorce from his father.

Beaver will reunite Foster and Gibson who previously worked together in the mid-nineties on the western Maverick. It would be easy to call this film’s premise dumb or outlandish, but as a fan of Lars and the Real Girl I don’t have room for judgment. Let’s stay tuned and see where this film and it’s expanding cast will take us.

What do you think of Anton Yelchin joining the cast of Beaver?

This is quite possibly one of the biggest cast of directors and actors out there. New York, I Love You is a combination of 12 short films that take place in New York. The film follows (or rather pays omage to) the style of Paris, Je T’Aime. Each film has a different director, different actors, but they all come together in one way; they are about finding love in New York.

The film includes a series of short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Khapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston and Randy Balsmyer. The film’s ensemble cast includes actors from all different genres including: Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, Anton Yelchin, James Caan, Olivia Thilrlby, Blake Lively, Drea de Matteo, Julie Christie, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Ugur Yucel, Taylor Geare, Carlos Acosta, Jacinda Barrett, Shu Qi, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Robin Wright Penn, Eva Ammuri, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman.

Check out the trailer below…

For something that could seem so hectic, it’s actually very easy to take in. It’s nice to see such a wide variety of talent together. It seems like it’s a great excuse for some bigger stars who haven’t really done the romantic dramedy scene yet (Orlando Bloom, Shia La Beouf) to give the genre a try, as well as a place for up and comers (Rachel Bilson, Olivia Thirlby) to work with some big names.

The film will be in theaters October 28th.

Will you go and see it?
