When it comes to embracing a movie as superficially stupid as Shawn Levy‘s Real Steel, liking to loving it is almost like going through the stages of grief. Watching talented performers like Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, and newcomer Dakota Goyo make you invest in the tale of a boy and his robot boxer does lead to denial (“wait, how can I like a Shawn Levy Movie about boxing robots?”), anger (“This movie is manipulative!”, bargaining (“it works in spite of itself”), depression (“maybe it’s just the state of the industry, that the bell curve has been so lowered that Shawn Levy makes better movies than most now.”) and acceptance. Real Steel works, and it works the audience over in a crowd-pleasing way.

Mackie got his big break in Spike Lee‘s She Hate Me, which was under-seen and did little for his career. The Adjustment Bureau, AKA a little something for everyone. Much like what I predicted when they released some clips for this film, this is very much a story with a lot of running around, a lot of “I love you, come back!”, and some cool special effects. It’s kind of like the Bourne films mixed with some Romeo and Juliet, with a sprinkle of Inception and a pinch of religion — like I said a little something for everyone. Among the plethora of political groups advocating for under-represented citizens were The Black Panthers, grounded in black nationalism. First time writer/director Tanya Hamilton’s Night Catches Us highlights a group of former Panthers grappling with the late aftermath of the movement on the south side of Philly. The film stars Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington and hits theaters nationwide Friday, December 3rd.

According to Variety, he’s negotiating to star in a police thriller opposite Sam Worthington called Man On a Ledge.
