The Dark Knight Rises Full Trailer

This weekend, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol premiered the opening sequence of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and offered the film’s theatrical trailer. Currently the opening sequence is still only in certain Imax theaters, but the trailer is now online, and offers glimpses at new cast members Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, along with returning cast members Gary Oldman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine. Check it out…

The main thing to take away from this trailer is that if the marketing department is saying “the legend ends” then this is the end of ride for Nolan and Bale in their take on the material. Of course that could all change five years from now, but I wouldn’t count on it.

You can also find the trailer on Apple, though there’s been some issues with getting the right trailer to play on certain computers. There is definitely scale, but the outside fighting and sports game stuff is a little weird for the universe. Though Nolan has improved dramatically with action scenes since taking on Batman, large scale fighting is still the weakest elements of these films. But if you saw the Imax footage, there’s no doubt that Nolan is using the Imax camera and scale to his advantage. We’ll see how it all shakes out July 20, 2012.

Christopher Nolan Releases ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Opening Scene

Well, this should whip the fanboys into a frenzy—last night in Los Angeles, Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan screened the first eight minutes of the wildly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises to an audience of entertainment press. I’ll keep the spoilers at bay until after the jump, but suffice to say, the character of Bane is given a highly memorable entrance. UPDATE: Nolan will be screening the intro in various locations around the world next week; find the screening dates/locations here!

The opening 7-8 minutes of the film apparently begin with the funeral of Harvey Dent, and then leap forward show the CIA capturing Bane, followed by the villain’s insane mid-air escape from an airplane. Most reports from attendees state that the intro is brilliant save for one small detail—apparently it is impossible to understand what Tom Hardy is saying as Bane. Between his English accent and facemask, he’s all but unintelligible. Check out a full synopsis of the intro from a viewer below:

Ice. Cold. Crystalized imagery and a very familiar logo of a Bat.
Jim Gordon at Harvey Dents funeral gives a eulogy, a few words about
inspiring others…
CUT—
An unnamed mountainous region.
A jeep rides along the landscape. Hooded men in the back of a jeep are
driven to a small plane… the jeep is met by an armed CIA agent who
takes into custody a political VIP, who is traveling with these hooded
men… or is he? The CIA Douche learns that one of the hooded men is
BANE?!
The hooded men, along with the political VIP are loaded onto the plane.
The plane takes to the air as the CIA douchebag interrogates those
taken on board. One of the hooded men is dangled outside the plane and
questioned/threatened and when the CIA agent doesn’t get what he
wants, he fires his weapon (next to the hooded man’s ear, he is not
killed) and then begins to question the other hooded man. That hooded
man is unmasked and revealed to be… Bane!
CIA DOUCHE: Was it your plan all along to be captured?
Suddenly, a much larger plane overtakes the smaller plane occupied by
CIA Douche, Bane and hostages. Operatives from the larger plane
descend onto the smaller one–
Bane in all his Ventilator glory is revealed….CIA DOUCHE: If I take
this off, will you die?BANE: No. But I will be in a lot of pain.
BAM!
Operatives from the larger plane fire upon the interior of the plane
interrupting the interrogation.
The larger plane has ahold of the smaller one as it pulls it by wires
throwing all the passengers downward in a disorienting fashion.
After quickly overtaking the plane, Bane’s operatives bring in a man
with inside a body bag. This man is dead or looks barely alive. Bane
then takes the VIP political prisoner and inserts a tube and transfers
blood from the body bag man. (It’s confusing as to why this is
important.)
AND THEN… in a scene that no words will be able to do justice, a
hole is cut from the smaller plane and a wire takes Bane and the VIP
politico through the rear of the plane as the smaller plane is ripped
apart and is destroyed while members of Bane’s team sacrifice their
lives going down with the small plane. (Again, it should be stressed,
this description pales to what you will actually see, it’s a true
spectacle.)
The chant can be heard at the end… Deh-Shay! Bah-Sah-Ra!
The scene is followed by a montage that includes many images we’ve
seen, the most striking includes the Bat-copter chasing down fatigued
Batmobiles down the streets of Gotham, and a final shocking image of
Bane tossing away a shattered and torn Batman mask into rubble…
The only complaint about the 7 minute prologue was echoed by all in
attendace: Bane’s dialog is very difficult to understand. Imagine
Darth Vader with a very thick accent. Hopefully this will be fixed in
the final film.
Overall this opening scene is confusing, epic, and will leave
audiences speechless. All in a good way.

So there you have it, spoiler fans: the confirmed 7-8 minute intro of The Dark Knight Rises. Now all you have to do is wait about 7-8 months to see the rest of the actual film! Happy waiting…

The Dark Knight Rises’ Christian Bale Reveals Catwoman And Bane Info

Shaping up to be the most anticipated film of 2012, The Dark Knight Rises has been shrouded in secrecy (that is, until last week, when Christopher Nolan finally let slip a few details about the film). What do we know about the film? Well, it takes place eight years after The Dark Knight, and features Bane and Catwoman at odds with Batman. Recently, Christian Bale slipped a few details about the villainous characters in an interview.

Talking to the Phillippine Daily Inquirer about his costars Anne Hathaway (Catwoman) and Tom Hardy (Bane), Bale let a few things slip—just enough for us fanboys to lose sleep trying to piece together into a cohesive plot summary (that probably won’t resemble the finished film at all—but hey, what are we supposed to do? Actually be patient until next summer? Ha!).

On Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman:

“I’m terrible at auditions, so I’m very impressed when somebody really seems to acquire an ownership of a character without having worked on it or prepared for some amount of time. I saw that in Anne…in many ways, she has the hardest job. There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne’s role as being the toughest job of any of us.”

On Tom Hardy’s Bane:

[Tom Hardy] “is a phenomenal actor. I like working with him a great deal. He goes the whole hog. I know that Bane has been seen in movies before. But, in my eyes, Tom is essentially creating Bane for the first time so there’s great freedom for him to be able to do so.”

There you have it—it’s not much, but it should be enough to keep those fanboy juices flowing until next summer… or at least until the trailer leaks.

Anne Hathaway Performs Rap Song About ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Leaks

Well, this is kind of hypnotizing in a car crashy sort of way. Last night, Anne Hathaway appeared on Conan, when conversation turned to her frustration over the numerous leaks of The Dark Knight Rises filming details due to paparazzi coverage. And Hathaway, who is set to play Selena Kyle/ Catwoman in the upcoming film, decided to express her frustration with a Lil Wayne styled rap performance.

Seriously.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t squeeze in just a spoiler or two (come one, just let us know if Catwoman teams up with Batman… or does Bane break Batman’s back?… or why is Commissioner Gordan in the hospital in the teaser?… or why does the teaser look like Inception outtakes… come on, I’m getting the shakes here, give me something!), and just sticks to the subject of the paparazzi, well, sucking and filming the making of The Dark Knight Rises without permission.

Fine, fine, don’t tell us anything. I don’t even care. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go to a The Dark Knight Rises fan site and refresh the discussion board page 72 times in 10 minutes.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Version Of Catwoman, Revealed!

Update: Check out new footage from the set of The Dark Knight Rises, in which the Catwoman stunt actress accidentally destroys an expensive IMAX camera while driving the Bat-Pod pictured above!***

After laying down a gauntlet of fanboy frothing by releasing picture of Tom Hardy as Bane, then dropping a creepy teaser trailer, and then just letting the whole world watch a giant fight between Batman and his new villain, Christopher Nolan seems to have loosened up about letting details slip from The Dark Knight Rises. And today is no different, as the first promotional shot of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (a.k.a., Catwoman) was revealed.

It seems Nolan has moved away from the slinky camp of Julie Newmar/ Eartha Kitt/ Lee Meriwether original series costumes, the skintight sexiness of Michelle Pfieffer’s Batman Returns incarnation, or Halle Berry’s stupid—ok, really hot, but still just plain stupid—disaster of a costume (you have know idea how hard it was for me not to write cat-astrophe just now. Forgive me, readers, forgive me), and has opted for, well, James Marsden’s Cyclops outfit from the first three X-Men films. Go figure.

Actually, in typical Nolan style, the shot raises more questions than it answers: why is Catwoman riding Batman’s Bat-pod motorcycle—did she steal it, or have they partnered up? Is Batman unable to ride it due to injury (in the comics, Bane famously snapped Batman’s spine in two). And more importantly, will this costume inspire a spate of insipid and slutty Catwoman outfits this Halloween? Only time will tell, faithful readers. Anne Hathaway Discusses Her Poor Oscar Hosting Performance On ‘The Today Show’

Anne Hathaway appeared yesterday on The Today Show and discussed the brutally bad reviews that she and James Franco received as hosts of the worst Oscars ever in the whole world ever times infinity plus one: “They said we were the worst show ever,” the actress told host Matt Lauer. “I think that qualifies as tough.”

And while the reviews of the show were tough, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Hathaway fared far better than her zonked out cohost, James Franco:

“A national survey of 241 viewers conducted by San Francisco Bay Area’s Q & A Research found that 36 percent gave Hathaway a very good to excellent rating to just 19 percent for Franco. Half of viewers (51 percent) want her back as host, while 26 percent wish to see Franco return.”

That isn’t too bad a score, considering how hyperactive the actress had to be just to overcompensate for Franco’s laconic performance.

Hathaway, personally, views the Oscar night as “several different experiences”:

“There was the critical reaction, which was awful. Then there are the people who have been coming up to me since then who stop and say, ‘I thought it was fantastic. I watched it with my family and we were entertained.’ I am very grateful to those people.”

When asked if she would return as an Oscar host, Hathaway gave a confusing answer worth of Franco himself:

“Why not? I don’t know. Maybe. Perhaps. No.”

Anne Hathaway And Others Push Obama On Same-Sex Marriage

Actress and recent Oscar host Anne Hathaway has redeemed herself in the eyes of humanity (seriously, that Oscar gig was… not good) by signing a letter to President Obama endorsing same-sex marriage.

The letter, posted to Obama last Monday, was also signed by Ellen Degeneres, Jane Lynch, Martin Sheen, and Portia De Rossi.

According to Irish Central, the letter, “entitled ‘Say I Do Mr President,’ is the latest move by the marriage equality group ‘Freedom to Marry.’”

“In February, you made a powerful statement about the law. We ask you now for your leadership on ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage – an exclusion that harms millions of Americans each day. Whether to end discrimination in marriage is a question America has faced before, and faces again today… We ask you to complete your journey and join us, and the majority of Americans, who support the freedom to marry.”

It’s refreshing to see members of Hollywood actually pushing for something socially worthwhile, as opposed to pushing awful Bruce Villanch jokes down the throat of the American populace—seriously, Hollywood, stop it, just stop it. Stick with using celebrity a fulcrum for social change instead of dropping yuck-yuck zingers during award ceremonies, ok? Thanks!

Anne Hathaway Confirms She’s Catwoman, Not Just Selina Kyle

In January Warner Bros and director Christopher Nolan announced to the world that Anne Hathaway had been cast in The Dark Knight Rises. In the official press release it stated that she would play Selina Kyle, and everyone knows that Kyle is the alter ego of one of the greatest Batman villains/lovers of all time — Catwoman.

Unfortunately, the studio’s statement didn’t officially have the name “Catwoman” in it so we assumed the latex and claws would never see the light of day. That was until Hathaway appeared on television during the post-Oscars “Oprah Winfrey Show” and shouted Catwoman to the world. Take a look…

Here’s the set up: In the video Oprah is inquiring about how Hathaway felt when she was first asked to host the Oscars. Within her response, she talks about being on edge at the time because she was awaiting a call from her manager about playing Catwoman. Note that she doesn’t say Selina Kyle, she says Catwoman. We may be reading between the lines but it’s something!

2011 Oscar Reviews: Franco Flat, Hathaway Passive Agressive?

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards were hard to watch. Not because of their predictable winners but because of their horrible hosts. Last year we had some issues with Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin’s one-two punch but this year has them beat. When we first heard that James Franco and Anne Hathaway were going to host the show we were worried. Very worried. And with good reason. They’re not professional comedians and they don’t have professional hosting experience and it showed! It made for a very awkward evening to say the least. See what critics around the country thought of their performance last night.

“Despite an overall rewarding of brilliant performances and no truly shocking didn’t-see-that-coming upsets, the 83rd Annual Academy Awards will likely be remembered as the night James Franco couldn’t act like a host.” [THR]
Franco came off like that lacrosse boy you wish your daughter didn’t hang out with so much, sort of heavy-lidded and smirky and … well, let’s give him credit for being James Franco, the 23-hour-a-day workaholic/grad student/filmmaker/soap-opera/not-best-actor wunderkind of his generation. Turns out hosting Oscars is when the dude decides to take a rest.” [The Washington Post]
Certainly the comic opening, in which Hathaway and Franco were inserted into movies such as Inception through a purported porthole in Alec Baldwin’s brain was exceedingly funny. From Kirk Douglas’ cleverly goatish leers to Randy Newman’s gleefully grumpy acceptance speech, it was a solid night for old pros who know how to ham it up entertainingly. (Newman’s rearrangement of his winning song “We Belong Together” as a jumping rock tune was really well executed.) [EW]
“You’ve got to get people who understand a live show. The first few minutes of that show is yours. You have to recognize two things. You have to recognize – like after Melissa Leo said that word – … when things happen like that you have to be able to come and lift the audience out of their shock and move the show forward. Franco and Hathaway were pretty but dumb, reminding me of the cool class kids who get to be in every sketch not because they’re talented, but because they’re popular. Franco looked perpetually stoned and Hathaway exuded fake enthusiasm [The Star]

Now it’s time for our two cents. What the hell were they thinking? It was like watching a train wreck. No, that’s not true because at least that would have been somewhat entertaining. It was like watching a 5th grade production of the Oscars. We wish the Academy would stop obsessing over youth and start paying attention to professionals who can deliver.

The opening bit with the Inception-like dream sequence that covered all the other films wasn’t unique. We liked that montage better when Conan O’Brien did it for the Emmy’s six years ago, and Billy Crystal before him. That was actually funny! Franco had no stage presence and it seemed as if Hathaway was struggling to carry them both. It was sad. Just sad.

Oscar Cohosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway Featurette

The Academy has just released a little teaser featurette and interview thing for the two co-hosts of this years 83rd Academy Awards, James Franco and Anne Hathaway with the two preparing all of their Oscar promotions. You get to hear them talk about how they got the job, see them mucking around in photos shoots, and overall give us a preview as to what will be a VERY different award ceremony this year than in the past…

Hathaway definitely looks like she’s aware of what’s going on and working on material, I hope that all those moments of deep thought Franco is taking is to prepare for the big show — one thing is for show, no one knows exactly what this year will be like and specially what Franco will be like/do.

We know Hathaway is charming, can sing and dance (quite often an Oscar prerequisite and she has done it before at the ceremony — expect some dancing!), and is quite easy on the eyes. Franco is kind of that wild card, does he sing? Does he do live performances? Will he get stoned before the show? No one knows, and if there ever were a reason to tune in, I think that might be one of them.

It’s that time of the year again, Vanity Fair is about to release their annual Hollywood issue. We have to admit, this year’s stars are a lot more interesting and diverse than the group from 2010. It features everyone from Ryan Reynolds to Noomi Rapace. The majority of the three-tier cover models include young Hollywood favorites and one legend who managed to sneak in between the pages. Find out who below…

In order of appearance, the cover features: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund and Noomi Rapace.

Somehow they convinced the talented Robert Duvall to sit in the background while these young, whipper snappers grab all the attention. We’re not sure how that happened but it did. Another important question to ask is, where is Tom Hardy? What about Ryan Gosling? And why is Joseph Gordon Levitt just now making an appearance?

There are so many questions and not enough answers. Who do you think has been omitted from this prestigious group?

Tomorrow morning, the moment we’ve all been waiting for will finally arrive. The 2011 Academy Award nominations will be revealed on Tuesday at 5:30 am PST/8:30 EST. But before we get to that, the folks at the Academy decided to release some promo pics for their talented (and slightly controversial) hosts for this year’s show: James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Check out the duo in the photos below…

The first thing we want to say is, thank God, Franco got rid of that mustache he was wearing these past few months. It was giving off a serial killer vibe that we weren’t comfortable with. Besides that, both him and Anne look great in these photos. We don’t necessarily think that they’re the best fit to host the Oscars, but we’ll see what happens.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
