Tyler Perry is stepping outside of his comfort zone with his latest film, For Colored Girls. It’s the first film that he’s written and directed that’s not based on his own material. The story is adapted from the award winning stage play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, which was penned by Ntozake Shange in 1977. Was Perry able to successfully adapt the material for the big screen?

Tyler Perry is stepping outside of his comfort zone with the drama For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. It’s the first film that he’s directed that isn’t based on his own material. It’s an adaptation of a play by Ntozake Shange, that features a series of monologues based on the colors of the rainbow. Lionsgate has released the first official photo from the film and it features an amazing cast including Janet Jackson, Phylicia Rashad, Kerry Washington, and Thandie Newton. I decided to make a surprise trip over to D23, Disney’s new Expo which looks like a mini Comic-Con but with a quarter of the people, booths, clips, and filmmakers. Although it’s nice not to be sweating in line for Hall H, it’s a bit weird having to wait half an hour for them to start a clip because they need the room to fill. The calm is a bit disconcerting.
This morning Bob Iger took the stage to introduce us to the first 30 minutes of The Princess and the Frog, (only 87% finished and with a temp score) and a song medley by the star of the film Anika Noni Rose, who does the voice for Princess Tiana (despite the fact that she had bronchitis and couldn’t speak).
But now to the film!
