Tom Hanks Wants More Robert Langdon in The Lost Symbol

Have we learned nothing from the sub-par performance of Angels & Demons? Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown recently released another book in his religious novel series entitled, The Lost Symbol and guess who’s already read it? Tom Hanks, the star of the two film adaptations told MTV that he loved the book, and is ready to reprise his role as Robert Langdon in a Lost Symbol film.

Here’s what Hanks had to say about his revived interest in the Dan Brown book series. “I just finished it last week. Page-turner. Dan Brown knows how to weave a tale. I was exhausted by the end of it.” When asked if he had any interest in reprising his role as Robert Langdon he said,

“I’d love to if they’re going to do it,” he said. “I’m not going to walk away from that…. If they make it again, I hope they ask me. If they didn’t, what did I do wrong? They’re incredibly fun movies to make and I think they’re really fun movies to watch too, explained Hanks. They’re like very intricate, very dangerous, steroid-pumped scavenger hunts and I think everyone likes to be in on the clues and the trail and the signs.”

Don’t do it Tom! The books may be getting better, but the films are having the opposite effect. The Da Vinci Code made $760 million worldwide and Angels & Demons came in with a little over $485 million, there’s a reason for that. Tom Hanks is such a talented guy who deserves so much better than the sub-par scripts that have been given to him via this franchise. Someone, make it stop.

Weekend Box Office: Angels and Demons Barely Makes It

When the best line in a commercial for a film is, “It was better then The Da Vinci Code” you know you’re in trouble. I expected people to go and see Angels and Demons anyway, but apparently you’re all too smart for that! The Da Vinci Code opened to $77,073,388 with an average gross of $20,635 per theater. Normally a sequel would and should make more money than it’s predeccesor, but Angels and Demons opened to $48,000,000. That’s 29 million dollars less than The Da Vinci Code. Ouch. In fact, almost as many people went to Star Trek in it’s second week as Angels and Demons in it’s opening weekend (Yay! Maybe people finally listened to me about Star Trek!)

Movie Releases: Angels and Demons, The Brothers Bloom, Management…

This week, Angels & Demons will be released into theaters. It’s questionable how it will compete with the two giants, Star Trek and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. There are also a few limited releases hitting theaters. If you are in the mood for a romantic comedy, you may want to check out Management starring Steve Zahn and Jennifer Aniston. The Brothers Bloom, is a quirky film about two con men who are after their final score. The film stars Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, and Mark Ruffalo, has gotten fairly mixed reviews, so watch at your own risk. Check out the rest of the films below…

Angels and Demons is about a famous Harvard symbologist, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), who is called to action by the Vatican to help solve a murder and hopefully stop a terrorist act against the church. Ron Howard‘s previous The Da Vinci Code, was killed by needles explanation after explanation, which made you feel as if you were still reading the book instead of watching a film. Although Angels and Demons, fixes many of the problems from the first film, it had one major problem that it could never overcome…

I had a epiphany while watching Angels and Demons. Dan Brown’s books do not make good movies. You would think they would. They’re like a live action puzzle about hot button religious issues and they sell like hot cakes. But, when it comes down to it, they don’t translate well to screen.

Everything was there. The shots were gorgeous, the acting was good, the dialogue was not as dense as it was in The Da Vinci Code, the action sequences were fun, but overall it just wasn’t that interesting. The source material may be good on the page, but on screen it just doesn’t work as well as it should and leaves you feeling like you want more from it.

It’s one of the great mysteries of film, things are never as they seem.

There were also some plot problems to take issue with. (***Spoiler Alert***) From the first time I saw a trailer, I knew Ewan McGregor was the “bad guy.” They add to this give you every single, hint, nudge, and wink along the way. This wouldn’t be such a problem if his character wasn’t such a weak bad guy. He’s not the bad guy who is pretending to be good to do something evil, he’s just a guy doing what he thinks is right. I wish they would have made him an Illuminati member, at least then we would have had a motive and furthered the mystery. But, he was just a Priest, trying to do what every other Priest was trying to do, get power. I mean what Priest hasn’t lied, cheated, manipulated, or killed in order to make sure that the right principles (his principles) are upheld?

The film does however have a few amazing lines. My favorite of which is…

This film does have it’s moment and Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor both do a great job with their characters. So my suggestion, see the film at your own risk, and don’t complain to me if you feel less than satisfied.

New Interactive Angels and Demons Trailer

Apparently Sony and NCM.com are trying take the Angels and Demon‘s trailer where no trailer has ever gone before (they really should have done this for Star Trek, that line would have worked much better).

Instead of just watching the trailer (God! Anyone can do that!), they’ve tried to reinvent the traditional movie trailer by adding more clickable, dynamic content such as unlocked, exclusive content, historical information that was used in the movie, and embeddable photos and videos. If there’s one thing we know, it’s that this film will have a LOT of subtly to it, so it’s best to start reading up now.

On the carpet Howard stated that:

“You have the fact that a lot of people have really enjoyed the story and yet as a filmmaker you have to put that out of your mind and choose what you think are the most cinematic ideas and the ones that are going to be the most compelling and make the movie stand on it’s own. And that’s really, in the case of Angels and Demons, what I was trying for.

Tom Hanks Update: Toy Story 3, WWII, Angels and Demons

IESB has posted tidbits from an interview with Tom Hanks. He talks about all his upcoming projects: Toy Story 3, Angels and Demons, and an HBO follow up to Band of Brothers called The Pacific.

Can Tom Hanks make a bad career move? No, seriously, this guy caught fire in the 80′s and continues to burn today. I admit he had some hits and misses, but The Toy Story films (as with all the Pixar films) have been enormously successful, and Band of Brothers won six Emmys. That’s nothing to laugh at! The Da Vinci Code, whether you like it or not, grossed over 750 million dollars worldwide.

Instead of sitting on his laurels, this legend lives on!

On the status of Toy Story 3, Hanks said:

“They did an interesting thing on this one. They did not send us a script. They showed us a complete story reel of the entire movie, with storyboards moving from one to the next, and the people up at Pixar recorded some voices with some music and sound effects. Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger and I went in a movie theatre, watched the reel and said, ‘This is great, let’s get to work!’”

The Pacific:

“That’s having its score finalised. I think it’s going to be March 2010. We are able to visit the home front on this one and we’re able to show the guys before the War and after. We show some of the most vicious stuff I’ve ever seen on film – because it has to be.”

Angels and Demons:

“Everyone says, ‘Oh, isn’t it terrible that the Vatican didn’t let you shoot?’ The Vatican is all over this movie. ’There it is there, it’s in the background here, we’re driving past it there!’ We built all the rest on a soundstage for dead solid matches. I don’t know a lot of people who get to make movies in St Peter’s Basilica anyway, so I don’t think anyone guessed.”

Angels and Demons Musical Featurette

A new featurette has just popped up on /Film with a little sneak into the music in Angels & Demons. The clip contains an introduction by the films composer Hans Zimmer and Director Ron Howard. Zimmer briefly explains why he was inspired by this film (possibly because he did the original score for The Da Vinci Code?) and Howard talks about how the new score is a continuation from one of the final pieces in The Da Vinci Code, and helps show Robert Langdon’s (Tom Hanks) growth from the last film and into this one.

After the intro, we we get to see some clips of the film (nothing too new) set to a piece from Zimmer’s score for the film. It’s kind of like an Angels & Demons music video.

Now, I try to avoid any judgment on movie scores, so I’ll just throw it straight to you. What do you think?

Angels and Demons Video Clip

As May approaches the studios are pushing out the promotional materials for many of their summer tent pole films. This week alone has been dominated by clips and posters, from Paramount’s Star Trek so it’s no surprise that Sony Pictures wanted to make a push for their Da Vinci Code sequel, Angels & Demons. A video clip has been released that features returning lead Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) as he tries to convince the leaders of the Vatican to allow him access to the church’s archives. In typical Da Vinci Code fashion, the swelling music in the background screams, “we’re running out of time!” Isn’t it convenient this clip was released on Good Friday?

Two New Angels and Demons Posters

What I also like better about international posters is that they’re always a little more violent and dramatic than the US ones. Although I have enjoyed the angelic and demonic, give and take of the Tom Hanks posters for Angels and Demons, I really like the intensity and the fire behind the new Stellan Skarsgård and Ewan McGregor posters. I also love how they’re finally featuring someone other than Tom Hanks.

As I mentioned before after seeing a good 5-6 minutes of the film, I don’t want to like this film, but it looks REALLY good and so far ever image that has come out of the film has been really great. I think we’re going to be forced to like this one.

ShoWest: Sony Struts It’s Stuff

Out of all the presentations I think this one probably has been the most impressive. They just screened some never before seen clips and trailers for District 9 (trailer coming in a couple of weeks!), The Ugly Truth, Angels and Demons, Julie and Julia, Year One, and The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. Every single one looks amazing for what it is.

I have to say out of all of the movies that they screened, Angels and Demons impressed me the most, which I was hoping wouldn’t be the case. The Da Vinci Code was so horrible, that I was trying to avoid any of the hype for this film. I wish I could say, “don’t buy into it!” But they got me. Everything that I’ve seen so far, from posters to footage looks really good. Maybe they’ve redeemed themselves with this film. There is a lot more action, a lot more religion, and by the looks of it, and even more powerful bad guy. Hopefully, they’re not just setting us up for disappointment!

The Ugly Truth, looks like like the Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman film from 2001, Someone Like You. That being said, it’s looks like funny chick flick, with a ridiculous deal between two co-workers, a lot of silly penis jokes, and of course, vibrating panties during a business meeting that for some reason she just COULDN’T take off in the bathroom. They set out to make an simple, romantic comedy and it looks like they will deliver just that. It’s a simple film that won’t break new ground, but most likely will break the box office because it’s so “easy to watch.”

They premiered the trailer plus some more clips for Julie and Julia starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Stanley Tucci. The film is based off two true stories and mixed together. It is definitely the most “act-y” films out the bunch. It reminded me of old Hollywood, where they take the same A-list movies stars and then recycle them in slightly different combinations. We have Streep and Adams who just starred across one another in Doubt and Tucci and Streep, who shared the scene in The Devil Wears Prada, not long ago. Perhaps Streep is picking favorites? Whatever the reason, it’s nice to see three great actors working together. The film looks like a lot of fun. Streep plays the famous chef, Julia Child who is a slightly chubby, self-confident, and snooty French woman. She (of course) looks amazing in the film as does her supporting cast.

There wasn’t too much new footage for Year One, but what there was looks amazing. We did get to see Bill Hader appear for the first time (although you could hardly recognize his face). Overall, looks hilarious!

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 was the biggest disappoint out of the bunch. The film looks very Tony Scot and what I mean by that is that there is a lot of fast movement, overused jolty camera work, and commercial looking action. It looks like it’s trying to do something they think is new, but it was done 10 years ago.

District 9 came in a very close second to the Angels and Demons footage. Rory Bruer, the President of Sony announced that the trailer for the film will be released within the next couple of weeks, so make sure to keep an eye out! The clips from the film looked amazing. It begins with some “actual footage” which sucks you in and then things get creepy, really fast. They allow for it to be an alien film and yet they make it “real,” much like they did with zombies in 28 Days Later. There were a few things that seemed like fairly obvious plot devices, but hopefully that was the trailers fault, not the films. Overall it had a very 28 Days Later meets Aliens vibe to it, which is setting the bar pretty damn high. The film comes out August 9th, I’m sure there is more to come on this soon I’m sure!
