It’s time to catch up on this week’s news. First off, we’ve got another sequel in the works. Even though the Project X just hit theaters last week, there’s already someone busy writing a script for a Part II. Also, we’ve got some cool photos of some of your favorite heroes as tiny people. We’ve also got a neat clip of the cast from Superbad, and a spoof trailer from The Muppets. All that and more below.

Project X II: The critics might’ve hated Project X for being a plotless party movie, but a sequel is already in the works. Word from THR is that Michael Bacall, who co-wrote the screenplay, is busy writing a treatment for the sequel. The movie was made on a budget of $12 million, and has already seen some major profit (it had an opening weekend of $21 million). It’s unclear yet on whether the next movie will focus on the same three dudes or not.
Angie Turns Down Sequel Script: What do you do when Angie Jolie doesn’t like your script? Well, you re-write until she does. That’s what happening with the script for Salt 2, which Ms. Jolie reportedly rejected. ONTD says that writer Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the first film, is working on a revision that will make the actress happy.
Movie Characters With OCD: This week, Unreality Magazine put together a list of ‘Six Movies That Emphasize a Characters With O.C.D.’, including As Good As It Gets, The Aviator and The Odd Couple. Go check it out.

Sony Adds More Salt to the Table

Hey, remember the movie Salt? It starred Angelina Jolie as a secret agent who was put under investigation by her own people because she may be a sleeper agent or something? It was written by Kurt Wimmer, and directed by Phillip Noyce, and played like a throwback to the heyday of mid-90′s action. Clancy-esque, reversals on reversals, it manages to make over $100 at the domestic box office, and now Sony has Wimmer writing a sequel, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Not to give anything away, but at the end of the first Salt, it’s not as if there’s more story to tell, so the idea of a sequel presents a number of opportunities – first and foremost: more spy adventures. If this is to be Jolie as Bond, that’s a great idea because it wouldn’t have to embrace the camp of – say – Charlies Angels. The problem is if they try to follow the Bourne template a little too much.

Perhaps the film moved better on home video than it did theatrically, because the first wasn’t exactly cheap, and doing close to $120 Million on a $110 budget isn’t a great success. But Angelina Jolie is a star without a franchise (she walked away from a Wanted sequel) and she seems comfortable playing a butt-kicker. It should also be noted – as we often say around here – getting a script written is usually the cheapest part of movie making. If we hear more in the next couple months that’s a good sign for this, but if Jolie doesn’t like the script it’s DOA.

Angelina Jolie To Star In Cleopatra Biopic

As we reported earlier this month, Angelina Jolie was rumored to be in talks to star as Cleopatra in a big screen biopic based upon the Egyptian queen’s life. And today, the story went from being a rumor about talks to confirmation that Jolie will indeed play Cleopatra.

According to Showbiz Spy, Jolie is set to play Cleopatra (a role famously taken by Elizabeth Taylor in 1963), in a Scott Rudin production that “will focus less on Cleopatra’s seductive powers in the bedroom and more on her shrewd appetite for business and politics.”

As per our previous article on the film, the director of the upcoming Cleopatra biopic is up in the air, as David Fincher in currently in the running, James Cameron wants to direct a 3D, PG-13 version of the film, based on Stacy Schiff’s bestselling book Cleopatra: A Life, and Paul Greengrass was set to direct before jumping on the film Memphis.

Honestly, a 3D, James Cameron-ized version of Cleopatra seems a little extreme—although Fincher is growing increasingly tied to the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy, so who knows who will helm this thing? Moreover, Jolie’s costar who will play Marc Antony to her Cleopatra is also unknown—although I’m willing to wear a toga, casting agents. Just saying (they wore togas, right?)

New DVD Releases: The Tourist, How Do You Know, Yogi Bear

A couple of major star vehicles hitting DVD this week, and two that you probably don’t remember. Seriously, close your eyes and try to envision what movie How Do You Know? was. Got it yet? No? Yeah, didn’t think so – it was the rom-com featuring Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd. Okay, you still don’t know what it is, just trust me, it exists and you can get it on DVD this week.

It’s joined by the controversial Golden Globe choice The Tourist and perhaps the biggest star of them all, as Yogi Bear makes his DVD debut. All that, plus you can now follow me around on Twitter @paynehumor and get all my snark 140 characters at a time.

How Do You Know? and The Tourist

It’s been said before, but allow me to throw one more shovel-full of dirt on the grave that is the idea that movie stars help a film succeed at the box office.

Exhibit A: The Tourist

By all measures, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp are the top female and male box office stars, respectively. She’s on the cover of every magazine, routinely makes hit films, and is given the keys as the sole headliner of many high-profile vehicles. Depp, meanwhile hit a $1 Billion worldwide with Alice in Wonderland right after headlining the very successful Pirates trilogy with one more on the way.

Throw them together in a sexy thriller and you’ve got easy box office gold, right? Well that is if you consider $67 Million against a $100 Million budget to be something that Kind Midas would enjoy.

Exhibit B: How Do You Know?

My impression of a film executive trying to tell himself that this movie is nothing to worry about:

“Okay, so we’ve spent $120 Million on a romantic comedy from the guy who last gave us Spanglish.

“But it’s okay because we have Reese Witherspoon. She’s probably the most bankable female movie star out there, especially when it comes to rom-coms. Plus, we have Paul Rudd. All his movies make money!

“Not only that, but we have Owen Wilson – he was in Wedding Crashers, that movie was huge! And Jack Nicholson to boot. Everybody loves Jack!”

Well, that theory didn’t quite work out. Didn’t work out to the tune of making only $30 million against that staggering budget. So how did it even get that high? Probably because when you have a nice roster of movie stars headlining, you can get a blank check. Of course, being James L. Brooks doesn’t hurt either.

So what does this show us? That it didn’t matter who was in these movies. They looked bad, the trailers stunk, and they bombed. Absolutely bombed.

As little as ten years ago, these films would have been massive hits with these stars. All you needed to do in decades past, was list your stars and people would flock to the theater regardless of the trailer. Now we see the movie stars all over TMZ and the Internet whenever we want, and we need a good movie as an excuse to pay to see them, not the other way around.

So why do they continue to shell out big bucks to the stars? Beats me. Unless you consider the fact that The Tourist made almost $200 Million abroad. Perhaps the stars still draw overseas.

However, if you still dig on movie stars, you can buy The Tourist on DVD. Or, you can buy How Do You Know? on DVD.

David Fincher To Direct Angelina Jolie In Cleopatra Biopic?

So what do you do after directing the Oscar-winning The Social Network, and wrap up your American version remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? If you’re David Fincher, you may well direct Angelina Jolie in a Cleopatra biopic.

However, the emphasis is on the word “maybe”—rumor has it that James Cameron wants to direct a 3D, PG-13 version of the film, which is based on Stacy Schiff’s bestselling book Cleopatra: A Life, while Paul Greengrass was attached to direct before bailing for Memphis, and Fincher’s name is already increasingly tied to the remaining three films on the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, as well as Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo.

Deadline has it like this:

“I’m told the director conversation right now is with David Fincher, who just got a Best Director Oscar nomination working with Cleopatra producer Scott Rudin, and who is working with Rudin on the Stieg Larsson novel adaptation The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, also at Sony Pictures.

“It’s not surprising that the top directors in town are after this gig. As Rudin has described it, this is the first telling of the Cleopatra story from a woman’s perspective. Instead of simply being a… Cleopatra is also a shrewd politician, strategist and warrior, with sexual charisma to spare. The feeling is the role is a perfect fit for Jolie, who might be the only actress right now with the box office might to get such a large film financed. Jolie is very particular about the directors she works with. This would be her first film with Fincher.”

Like many of you, we were shocked when this year’s Golden Globe nominees were announced. The Best Musical or Comedy category has been under a lot of scrutiny because of the inclusion of Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and their film The Tourist. Who knew that the movie was funny or full of great songs? Apparently, it was filled with laughs, but unfortunately most of them were caught off camera and came at the expense of co-star Paul Bettany. Take a look…

This footage originally aired as a special segment on Entertainment Tonight, and was re-posted online via ScreamingAngie11 on YouTube. It looks like the actors really had a lot of fun behind the scenes, with Mr. Bettany being the butt of most of their jokes. It’s always great to see such serious actors lighten up every now and again, but this video would have been ten times better if there was a surplus of Timothy Dalton in it. Did you see his outtakes from Hot Fuzz? To call them hilarious would be an understatement.

New DVD Releases: Salt, Easy A, Wall Street Money Never Sleeps

It’s Golden Globe nominees a-go-go on DVD this week with honorees Emma Stone and Michael Douglas‘ nominated performances hitting shelves with the releases of Easy A and Wall Street Money Never Sleeps, as well as surprise nominee Angelina Jolie’s much bigger hit, Salt, also available on DVD.

All that, plus that M. Night Shyamalan‘s elevator movie that wasn’t directed by M. Night Shyamalan. How exciting?!

Salt

I think we need a term for films that become progressively worse. Do you know what I mean? those movies that initially grab your attention with a cool premise, a couple of laughs, or a great stunt sequence but slowly become duller, more derivative, or more nonsensical to the point that you forget there was a time where you were actually enjoying the film.

Maybe we could say the film becomes too “Salty” in honor of the Angelina Jolie vehicle of this past summer.This film had us for a while. A cool action premise with a harrowing escape that hooked us early and left us wondering what the heck was going on. Then we got the answer to that question and it was…insane to say the least.

Then, that plot that we discovered led to another plot, and another, and things that I won’t spoil but seemed just as cliched as they were unbelievable. By the end, we thought this movie was just a mess. It’s like we took the first bite of a steak, were intrigued, but then found out the piece of meat was layered with more seasoning on every bite, and by the end we were just drowning in salt.

Kind of like how we felt with this film.

Easy A

Here’s the problem with the incredibly baseless list of Golden Globe nominees. They were so bad, that everybody completely dismissed them. Especially when it comes to the comedy categories.

While that’s probably a good thing to do, all those terrible nominations take away from the fact that one surprise honoree was very deserving: And that is Emma Stone for Easy A.

Watching this film, you wonder if any other actor her age has the poise and intelligence to lend the proper gravity to this role and prevent it from being lost in the typical high school rom-com cliches. In other words, could the film have succeeded with anybody else in her part?

This film depended entirely on its lead to be outstanding in order for it to succeed. How many other movies can you say that about this year? Black Swan? The King’s Speech? It’s not a long list.

With that in mind, not only does Stone actually deserve this nomination, but she deserves to win over the ladies of the mind-blowingly overrated The Kids Are All Right.

The Tourist: Movie Review

It’s time for some pretty people blowing up pretty places in The Tourist! Luckily for us, the film is actually a bit better than the average run of the mill sexy, action adventure and is entertaining enough to keep you interested the whole way through despite it not being in any way, shape, or form original or surprising. But it is fun and easy for the whole family to go and see if you’re too afraid to see one of the best films of the year also coming out this weekend, The Fighter. But hey, some people like photo shoots with acting…

The Plot:

An American tourist (Depp) visits Italy to mend a broken heart, but crosses paths with a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who plans to use him as her pawn. Soon the tourist finds himself in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

The Good:

It’s Pretty: Beautiful shots, beautiful locations, beautiful people… it’s a whole lot a pretty going on everywhere you look. It’s not exactly a challenge to make Venice, Italy and two of the best looking people in the world look good, but they still deserve some mention for doing so.
Self-Aware: The last line in the film (don’t worry I won’t spoil anything) about Depp’s face not only wraps up the movie but is very much said with a wink to the audience. I thought it was rather accurate that when Jolie enters ANY room, all the men around her ogle her with their eyes. The film seemed to know what it was and who the people in it were, which made it a little bit easier to swallow.
Supporting Cast: The way they used Rufus Sewell was brilliant. He’s the one good surprise that I didn’t see coming and was well cast and used in the movie. Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton both put in great performances and as predicted raised the bar on the level of acting in the film.
The Pace: Often times film’s like these lose their pacing about half-way through, but despite my pessimistic behavior walking into the theater the film managed to keep me interested throughout.

The Bad:

Cliche Upon Cliche: From the English baddy to the convenient romance to the random dance sequence — think of every espionage thriller cliche over the past 50 years and it’s in this film. There’s literally nothing original about it and the twist is good, but predictable.
Time for a Music Number: There are two places in the film where the music really fails. One is the random song choice used instead of keeping with the score and the second is the dance number which goes with my cliche comment.
Predictable: It’s so incredibly easy to see where this film is going from 20 minutes in. Though there are a few decent twists there aren’t nearly enough surprises or suspense for a film like this.

Overall:

This is a pretty film and not entirely disappointing, but there are far better espionage movies out there and far better ones with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. It’s an easy flick to watch and is entertaining enough to keep your attention, but that’s about the highest praise I can give it.

Rating: 5.5/10

Against the breathtaking backdrop of Venice, Frank pursues a potential romance but soon finds himself the pursued as he and Elise are caught in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

The Tourist hits theaters on December 10th.

Angelina Jolie Responds to Criticism About Her Bosnian War Film

Angelina Jolie is typically praised for her acting and her charitable work, but the star has recently been on the receiving end of some serious criticism. Jolie is currently working on her directorial debut which is described as a “Bosnian love story,” and the natives of the country are up in arms about it. They’ve tried everything to stop the novice director from filming there and completing the movie, but according to Reuters Jolie plans to continue her work.

The film centers on a love story between a Serbian man and a Bosnian woman, but some thought it was about a rape victim who falls in love with her attacker, which had the people of Bosnia more than a little upset. The Bosnian advocacy group Women Victims of War wrote a letter to the United Nations High Council on Refugees (Jolie is one of their ambassadors) stating that they were deeply concerned by the film. They even said that Jolie’s attitude towards the subject matter was “ignorant.”

Jolie responded by saying, “There’s one person who has a gripe. The absolute majority of the people, population, the cast, prime minister, president have been extremely supportive.” Despite the adversity it sounds like Jolie is keeping her head up during this trying time.

First Photo From Angelina Jolie’s Directorial Debut

Over the past month, we’ve been hearing a lot about Angelina Jolie and her untitled directorial debut. The film is set during the Bosnian War and was supposed to be shot on location in the country but thanks to some outlandish rumors, Jolie had to shorten her time there. The film centers on a love story between a Serbian man and a Bosnian woman, but some thought it was about a rape victim who falls in love with her attacker, which had the people of Bosnia up and arms. Despite such adversity, the film is still going strong and the first production photo from the movie has been released. Check it out…

The photo appeared in a Hungarian newspaper and the folks over at The Playlist picked up on it. The image features Zana Majonovic (Snow) in the lead role, and Rade Šerbedžija (Snatch). We take it that they’re the two star-crossed lovers in the making.

Judging from this photo, the male character doesn’t look that intrigued by the female lead. She seems to be giving him the “come hither” stare but he’s either completely oblivious or just not interested.
