With The Adventures of Tintin, Steven Spielberg has finally decided to play with some of the newest toys of cinema, and in his first motion capture film, he revolutionizes the format. Moreso than Avatar, here Spielberg is let loose to play with the camera as he sees fit, and you can see an invigorated director who’s able to stage sequences in ways that would be unimaginable in live action. And that’s enough to make it a must-see.

Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit is one of the most anticipated films of next year, but also a big question mark. Now, there’s a trailer. The new film stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, with many returning cast members from the Lord of the Rings films, including Ian McKellan, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis and Cate Blanchett. And this trailer wants to remind you how much you liked the original series.

Last night the AFI festival hosted the first public screening of director Steven Spielberg‘s The Adventures of Tintin. Or, that is to say, the first public screening in America – the film has been open outside of the U.S. for more than a month, and has already made over $100 Million internationally. Spielberg’s first animated/motion-captured film, it stars Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in an adventure story where Tintin comes across clues to pirate treasure. One of the most exciting-looking movies of the summer is Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Though 20th Century Fox hasn’t always treated the franchise with respect – either in the original run or in it’s re-imagined Tim Burton fiasco – but the story is durable because man’s relationship to nature and meddling scientists are an evergreen subject. Though he’d been acting before, Andy Serkis made a name for himself with the motion capture performance in the Lord of the Rings films. Since then he’s become one of the leading motion-capture actors, and has been constantly working. But besides reprising his role as Gollum in the upcoming Hobbit movies, he’ll be serving as a second unit director for Peter Jackson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A very important part of The Hobbit has been finalized: the return of Gollum. The character was played by Andy Serkis in the original Lord of the Rings and according to Deadline, he’s back! Whenever a CGI creature is one of the central characters in a film there’s only man capable of bringing them to life — Andy Serkis! The actor who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings has landed a new gig as the “main ape” in the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes. According to 20th Century Fox, he’s joining the cast that currently includes James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow.
